The government is providing assistance to take up oil palm cultivation with 50% assistance on mechanisation and plans to take up oil palm cultivation on a mission mode as part of crop diversification, said a government press release here on Monday.

Telangana ranks first in the country in Oil Production Percentage (OER) with 19.32 per cent in 2021-22. Among the oilseed crops, palm oil is the highest yield with 10-12 tons per acre, for a period of 25-30 years.

Shia Muslims seek increased political representation

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Shia Muslim leaders are seeking increased political representation from the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh.

Prominent Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawad said: “As the government is including Pasmandas (backward Muslims) in every scheme, they must also include Shia Muslims, who are suffering due to neglect by previous governments.”

“According to the Sachar Committee report, Muslims are very backward but Shias are more backward among the Muslims. No previous government has worked for the welfare of the Shia community, but today the Shia community demands better political and social representation from the Modi government at Centre and the Yogi government in the state.”

Continuing further, he said: “When I met Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the first time, I asked him to pay attention towards the state of our community. At this, the prime minister said that in fact he has a complaint that ‘you never make a complaint about the state of your community’.”

  • US intel community fears increased India-Pak, India-China tension and conflict

US intel community fears increased India-Pak, India-China tension and conflict

    [ad_1]

Washington: The American intelligence community on Wednesday told lawmakers that it apprehends increased tension between India and Pakistan and India and China with the possibility of a conflict between them.

It also noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is more likely than in the past to respond with military force to Pakistani provocations.

This assessment forms part of the annual threat assessment of the US intelligence community that was submitted to the US Congress by the Office of Director of National Intelligence during a Congressional hearing.

While India and China have engaged in bilateral border talks and resolved border points, relations will remain strained in the wake of the countries’ lethal clash in 2020, the most serious in decades, said the report.

The expanded military postures by both India and China along the disputed border elevate the risk of armed confrontation between two nuclear powers that might involve direct threats to US persons and interests, and calls for US intervention. Previous standoffs have demonstrated that persistent low-level friction on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has the potential to escalate swiftly, it said.

According to the report, the crises between India and Pakistan are of particular concern because of the risk of an escalatory cycle between two nuclear-armed states. New Delhi and Islamabad probably are inclined to reinforce the current calm in their relationship following both sides’ renewal of a ceasefire along the Line of Control in early 2021.

“However, Pakistan has a long history of supporting anti-India militant groups, and under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is more likely than in the past to respond with military force to perceived or real Pakistani provocations. Each side’s perception of heightened tensions raises the risk of conflict, with violent unrest in Kashmir or a militant attack in India being potential flashpoints,” it said.

Responding to a question, the State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said US-Pakistan counter-terrorism dialogue provides an “opportunity for the United States to convey our willingness to work with Pakistan” to address terrorist threats and counter violent extremism, the threats that are in the region, the threats that have the potential to transcend the region as well.

“We have a shared interest in combating threats to regional security. The goal of a stable and secure South and Central Asia free from terrorism depends on the strength of in large part our partnership with Pakistan. The dialogue is a testament to our shared commitment to a resilient security relationship and an opportunity for candid discussion on steps we can take together to counter all terrorist groups that threaten regional and global stability,” he said.

“The United States seeks to expand our partnership to address these challenges. Any group that threatens regional and global stability of course is a concern to us. It is something that we discussed in the context of this counter-terrorism dialogue,” Price said.

Covid may cause increased chest pain months after infection: Study

    [ad_1]

Washington: COVID-19 patients may be at increased risk of suffering chest pain in the six months to a year after the infection, which could be a sign of future cardiovascular complications, according to a study.

Nearly 19 per cent of US adults who had previously tested positive for COVID-19 report having “Long COVID,” where they experience signs and symptoms for four weeks or more after the initial phase of infection.

Researchers from Intermountain Health in the US studied nearly 150,000 patients for cardiovascular symptoms. They found that patients who tested positive for COVID-19 had higher rates of chest pain in the six months to a year after the infection.

“Many COVID-19 patients experience symptoms well beyond the acute phase of infection,” said Heidi T. May, cardiovascular epidemiologist at Intermountain Health and principal investigator of the study.

“While we didn’t see any significant rates of major events like heart attack or stroke in patients who had an initial mild initial infection, we did find chest pains to be a persistent problem, which could be a sign of future cardiovascular complications,” May said.

The study finding was presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 2023 Scientific Conference in New Orleans, US.

In the large retrospective study, researchers compared three groups of Intermountain Health patients.

The team found that at six months and one-year intervals, patients who tested positive for COVID-19 had significantly higher rates of experiencing chest pain, but saw no other increases in cardiovascular events.

“As of right now, the symptoms aren’t necessary translating into hard outcomes, but that’s something that will need to be reassessed over time,” May said.

“It could be that lasting effects of infection on the cardiovascular system are hard to quantify in terms of diagnoses or other events in the short-term and won’t be realised until longer follow up,” the researcher added.

Human Rights | Child labor violations increased drastically in the United States

    [ad_1]

Since 2018, according to the US Department of Labor, the number of violations has increased by almost 70 percent.

Stateside the authorities have announced new measures aimed at eradicating child labour. This is reported by the Reuters news agency.

The administration announced the new measures after the number of child labor violations skyrocketed. In addition, numerous media outlets, including Reuters, have reported on the use of children in several dangerous fields.

Since 2018, the number of child labor violations has increased by nearly 70 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. In the last fiscal year alone, a total of 865 companies were deemed to have violated child labor laws.

of the United States according to the authorities, children have been used as labor in, for example, the car and food industries. For example, children have allegedly made the popular Lucky Charms cereal and Cheetos chips. It worked out The New York Times – in the investigation of the newspaper, where the journalists revealed the use of child labor in the Hearthside Food Solutions company that manufactures the food in question.

The US Department of Labor confirmed to Reuters that it has opened an investigation into the company’s actions. The company announced that it was cooperating with the authorities and said that it was “horrified” by the findings of the newspaper’s report.

One of the reasons for the increase in the use of child labor is the arrival of underage children traveling alone to the United States. These children are easy prey for, for example, recruiters of large factories, through whom the children end up working in illegal or very heavy jobs.

Current federal law prohibits children under the age of 16 from working in most factory settings. In addition, people under the age of 18 are not allowed to work in the most dangerous jobs.

The US administration has, among other things, established a new task force to investigate violations. The working group works as a collaboration between different ministries.

In addition, the administration wants to increase the amount of compensation from the current $15,138 per child. According to officials, the amount is not a sufficient deterrent for companies.

Islamabad: Hours after unleashing a tax-loaded mini-budget, Pakistan on Wednesday night hiked up the prices of petrol and gas to a historic high in a bid to appease the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for unlocking the critical loan tranche, reported Geo News.
The petrol price has been increased to 272 rupees per litre after an increase of 22.20 rupees, a press release from the Finance Division read, noting that the surge has taken place due to the rupee’s devaluation against the dollar.

The price of high-speed diesel has been increased to 280 rupees per litre after a hike of 17.20 rupees. Kerosene oil will now be available at 202.73 rupees per litre following a 12.90 rupees hike. Meanwhile, light diesel oil will be available at 196.68 rupees per litre after an increase of 9.68 rupees.

The new prices will come into effect from 12 am Thursday, reported Geo News.

The increase in the price of petroleum products was one of the preconditions of the Washington-based lender, which will lead to a hike in the already record-high inflation, coupled with the new fiscal measures undertaken through the ‘mini-budget’.

Inflation is expected to go up in Pakistan after the petrol hike, the ‘mini-budget’.

Senior economist Katrina Ell, associated with Moody’s Analytics, had predicted that inflation in Pakistan could average 33 per cent in the first half of 2023 before trending lower, and a bailout from the IMF alone is unlikely to put the economy back on track, reported Geo News.

Through the “mini-budget”, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led federal government aims to reduce the budget deficit and broaden its tax collection net.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued an SRO, increasing the standard 17 per cent general sales tax (GST) to 18 per cent, for collecting taxes worth 115 billion rupees, while the remaining 55 billion rupees will be generated through other measures in connection with the Finance (Supplementary) Bill 2023 — or the ‘mini-budget,’ reported Geo News.
