  • 36000 Pilgrims Performed Umrah, 50 Per Cent Increase Over Last Year

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: At least 36000 pilgrims from Jammu and Kashmir performed Umrah since September 2022 till this Ramadan, indicating 50 per cent increase of pilgrims compared to last year in the Union Territory, JK Association of Hajj and Umrah Companies (JKAHUC) said on Saturday.

General Secretary of the association, Muhammad Younis Bhat said that the tour operations have suffered a loss of Rs 5-6 lakh each this Ramadan as they were expecting a huge flow of pilgrims for Umrah in this holy month.

“However, the rush of pilgrims remained less, especially due to the March session for students announced by the government. The tour operators had already booked the blocks of airlines in advance, but as the rush was not up to the expectations, the bookings had to be cancelled and thus lead to the losses of Rs 5-6 lakh each to the tour operators,” he said.

He added that at least 36,000 people from across JK performed Umrah since September 2022 till this Ramadan while 34000 among them are from Kashmir division, adding that the number of pilgrims has increased nearly 50 per cent compared to last year.

The General Secretary further stated that earlier there was only one airline, Air India, available for the pilgrims, but the association played a key role in ensuring an increase in the number of airlines and now three airlines including Air India, Indigo and Spicejet are available for the pilgrims.

During the winters, the tour operators were facing losses, but this year, there has been rescheduling of the flight operations as the flights are connected unlike previous years, he said, adding that the Indigo earned highest amongst the three.

However, he appealed to the airlines to drop the pilgrims at Terminal 3 where the people from J&K get facilities.

Besides, the association also demanded immigration point at Srinagar international airport, saying that the process should be completed for pilgrims at Srinagar airport.

Reacting to the chaos over package for Umrah, he said that the main reason behind such an issue is the lack of coordination between the people and the tour operators, adding that the people have been demanding the cheapest package, thus the tour operators couldn’t manage things with just a meagre amount.

He further said that three packages are available, which include for 15 days, 21-22 days and one month, adding that most of the pilgrims opt for 21-22 days package.

About the upcoming Haj, the General Secretary of JKAHUC, said that the pilgrims must check the past history of the tour operators before fixing the package. He also said that there would be no increase in the amount payable for Hajj this year and the lowest package for a pilgrim will be Rs 6,50,000 like last year.

Asked about the video of Hajis that went viral after they faced issues in Saudi, he said that there was no fault of the tour operators here, but it was because of the hotel that they faced hardships.

Moreover, he said that the pilgrims going for Umrah should prepare themselves for a few day stay at Madina as the erstwhile trend of staying for 40 prayers will come to an end as the rates have increased manifold.

The General Secretary further appealed people not to go after the low package and ensure proper check of facilities being provided to him/her while discussing the package.

“The pilgrims should be ready to accept the orders being issued by Saudi Arabia. The norms in Saudi are to be followed and people should be aware about it. They should be aware about economic class and deluxe class packages,” he said and appealed to the tour operators to make things clear to the Hajis and ensure proper signature of the pilgrims while divulging the details.

Pilgrims are advised to attend orientation programmes to get aware about the facts, he said, adding that the people from Kashmir staying in Saudi Arabia should not add fuel to any situation, especially when there is any misunderstanding or any issue is taking place with the pilgrims.

He further said that the association has ensured accountability. “The cheating issues have taken place in the past, but we have been ensuring accountability. If there is any such complaint, the matter is being investigated thoroughly. There is no such case in the past three-four years, because the association has been playing key role and the people should meet us in case of any such complaint,” he said. (KNO)

Kuwait to increase electricity, water bills by 50%

    [ad_1]

Kuwait: Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water is set to increase electricity and water tariffs by 50 percent this year, local media reported.

The price hike will be implemented with the approval of the Kuwaiti National Assembly.

“The executive study to increase prices of electricity and water has been ready for some time, but the government’s resignation delayed its implementation,” sources told Kuwait Times.

The report indicated that citizens will be exempted from this increase in their private homes, however, their investments and commercial properties will be subject to the increases.

The ministry has reportedly said the increase is necessary as global energy prices continue to rise, as well as “the burden it poses to the ministry’s budget and public funds.”

“There are government fears that the National Assembly will reject this increase, but the government will fight for its approval, especially since the constitutional court’s decision to annul the parliament might change the political scene,” the sources added.

Ahead of Ramzan, airfares from UAE-Saudi increase

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: Prices of airline tickets from United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) are witnessing a upward trend ahead of the holy month of Ramzan, local media reported.

The airline ticket prices will increase significantly before and during the Eid-Al-Fitr holiday.

As per a report by Gulf News, Sharjah-based Air Arabia currently offers one-way fares from the UAE to Saudi Arabian cities such as Jeddah, Madinah ranging from 1,336 Dirhams (Rs. 30,068) to 1,536 Dirhams (Rs. 34,566).

Normally, tickets from UAE to Saudi Arabian cities would cost between 800 Dirhams (Rs 18,002) to 1,100 Dirhams (Rs 24,752).

It is reported that, this increase can be attributed to the increased demand for travel among pilgrims since Saudi Arabia removed COVID-related restrictions.

Ramzan is usually the peak of the Umrah season.

Umrah is a pilgrimage to Islam’s two holiest sites in the cities of Makkah and Madinah and can be performed at any time of the year. It is distinct from the Haj, which takes place once annually.

The numbers of Umrah and Haj trips are expected to easily reach pre-pandemic numbers this year as the kingdom removed all COVID restrictions.

  • Buttigieg ‘concerned’ about increase in airline close calls

Buttigieg ‘concerned’ about increase in airline close calls

    [ad_1]

The summit is intended to convene various pieces of the aviation industry, including airlines, airports and associated unions, along with safety regulators, to try to identify and address any potential red flags that may be hiding in the data each airline must report.

Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating all of the recent near-misses, said each one is complicated by the lack of cockpit voice recordings. Typically, these devices record on a two-hour loop.

“The six from this year all have one thing in common: The cockpit voice recorders were all overwritten,” Homendy said. She also noted that her agency has since 2018 recommended that planes be equipped with a cockpit voice recorder capable of storing at least 25 hours worth of audio — a standard that she said European regulators have had in place for more than a year.

Homendy said the Austin incident and a second incident in Burbank, Calif. were especially alarming instances of planes coming dangerously close to each other. In Burbank, where a Mesa Airlines flight was forced to go around a SkyWest flight as it was taking off, Homendy said the two planes came within 300 feet of each other.

“Too often we’ve seen the federal government and industry act after an incident, after lives are lost, once headlines are made,” Homendy said. “Our entire mission at the NTSB is to prevent that next accident.”

A POLITICO review of Federal Aviation Administration data shows that the first two months of 2023 showed a rise of near-collisions involving commercial planes across the country. During January and February, commercial jets experienced close calls at a higher rate than the previous five years combined.

Homendy said the NTSB is investigating six close calls at runways across the country since the start of the year. Additionally, the NTSB is investigating two wrong-way landings last year and two separate severe turbulence incidents on the same day in Hawaii last December, one incident where 36 people were hurt and another where a flight came within 800 feet of hitting the Pacific Ocean shortly after takeoff.

While all of those incidents remain under NTSB investigation, Homendy said that high turnover in the aviation industry since the pandemic, an increasingly congested airspace and the lack of adopting seven NTSB recommendations related to airport runways are all contributing factors to the troubling pattern of near collisions that contributed to the need for Wednesday’s summit.

“Today is not an academic exercise,” Nolen said. “We have to take these six near misses and treat them as if they have happened and that’s why we’re here today.”

  • Delhi: Demonstrations, dharnas at Jantar Mantar see 23% increase in 2022

Delhi: Demonstrations, dharnas at Jantar Mantar see 23% increase in 2022

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The year 2022 saw an increase of more than 23 per cent in demonstrations and dharnas at Jantar Mantar here over the previous year mainly due to lifting of Covid curbs, police said on Tuesday.

According to official data accessed by PTI, 661 demonstrations and 189 dharnas were held last year at Jantar Mantar with police permission as compared to 560 demonstrations and 129 dharnas in 2021.

In 2021, the second wave of COVID-19 had hit the national capital between April and May during which the Delhi government imposed restrictions on any type of gatherings, including protests.

An analysis of the data shows that there was 23.36 per cent increase in demonstrations and dharnas at Jantar Mantar last year as compared to 2021.

Some of the biggest protests that took place at Jantar Mantar in 2022 included the protest demanding establishing of an Ahir regiment in the Indian Army and farmer protest against the Centre over minimum support price.

According to police, both dharnas and demonstrations are forms of public protest.

Explaining the difference between a demonstration and a dharna, a senior police officer said that a demonstration is a public gathering to raise awareness about an issue, while a dharna is a form of sit-in protest at a public place to demand action or seek attention over a certain issue.

“Dharnas are mostly peaceful in nature while demonstrations can turn aggressive,” he said.

The officer said that before organising any dharna or demonstration, a body is supposed to take permission from the district police concerned which later grants approval based on the issue, organisers and type of gathering.

“But if a group of people gather without permission, in such a scenario, the protesters are allowed considering the nature of the protest and if it is not against an immediate issue or the government or is not affecting public at large,” he said.

Speaking about the challenges faced by the police while handling protesters, the officer said it is their responsibility to ensure the protesters do not enter any important installations including Parliament, PMO, and residences of the President, home minister or any other important dignitary.

“We need to ensure that there is no breach of security and law and order is maintained. In case, two groups with different ideologies gather to protest over the same subject, we need to ensure that they do not come face to face,” he said.

According to police officials, they also need to ensure that no protester harms himself by self-immolation or climbing a tree.

“Most importantly, we ensure that protesters do not indulge in any hate speech. Besides, we have to ensure that no anti-national, caste or religious slogans are raised which can disturb the communal harmony of society,” the officer said.

Recalling one such incident, he cited the arrests made by Delhi Police for allegedly raising anti-Muslim slogans during a protest near Jantar Mantar in August, 2021 in which former BJP spokesperson Ashwini Upadhyay was also held.

“We also need to ensure that protesters do not turn aggressive, go beyond Jantar Mantar and indulge in blocking traffic. Police and paramilitary forces are deployed at the protest site to ensure no untoward incident occurs, and in case it happens, protesters are detained and legal action is taken against them,” the officer added.
