Mujpathri Gram Sabha Declares 1000 Sq Km Forest Land As Community Forest, Including

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: On April 28th, Panchayat Halqa Mujpathri-Khansaheb made history by organizing the first Gram Sabha on Community Forest Rights under the Forest Rights Act 2006. This event was a significant step towards community-led conservation and sustainable tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The event was facilitated by J&K Forest Rights Coalition (FRC), and a large turnout of residents participated in the historical gathering. During the Gram Sabha, a detailed resolution was read and passed by the Forest Rights Committee, Panchayat, and Gram Sabha members with unanimous approval. The resolution declared 1000 square kilometers of forest land as Community Forest, stretching from Sochal-pathri to Nurpurgali, Khaal-Katt to Burgah, Zeskhal to Eid (lidermatt).

The resolution also mandated the panchayat to ensure conservation of forests and mountains, as well as the sustainable use of minor forest produce and forest foods. This move by Mujh Pathri to declare such a large area as a community forest is commendable, and it is hoped that this will serve as an inspiration for other communities and governments to follow suit in promoting community-led forest management and conservation.

Notably, Mujh Pathri panchayat is the first panchayat to lead community conservation, community-based tourism, and afforestation under the leadership of J&K-FRC and its activists. The Gram Sabha also resolved that the first beneficiaries of Doodhpathri tourism would be residents of Rayiar, Mujh Pathri, Gurweit, and BassantWoeder.

The resolution stressed the importance of maintaining the carrying capacity of Doodhpathri during tourism and opposed mass and irresponsible tourism. It also prohibited the use of packed food, polythene, liquor, and narcotic drugs. Furthermore, the Panchayat pledged to monitor anti-environmental development in eco-sensitive areas. The resolution was supported by the Panchayats of Gurwaith, Rayiar, Beeru, RayiarKeich, Check Shaira, and Drager, respectively.

The founder of the J&K Forest Rights Coalition, Dr. Shaikh Ghulam Rasool, Secretary Peer Ghulam Mohiuddin, and Convener Zahid Parwaz Choudhary coordinated the Gram Sabha procedures under the Forest Rights Act 2006. This historical event marks a significant step towards community-led conservation and sustainable tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Community forests are forest lands managed and governed by the local communities who use them for their livelihoods, traditional practices, and cultural activities. This approach not only empowers the communities but also helps in conserving the forest ecosystem, reducing deforestation, and promoting biodiversity. The recognition of community forests as a legitimate land-use category is an important development in the realm of forest governance and management.

The declaration of 1000 sq. km of forest land as a community forest during the First Historical Gram Sabha at Mujh Pathri marks a significant step towards sustainable and community-led forest management. It is hoped that this will serve as a model for other regions and communities in promoting community-led forest management and conservation.

Projection mapping shows at 13 heritage sites including red fort to mark 100th episode of ‘Mann ki Baat’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Projection mapping shows have been held at 13 heritage sites across the country, including Red Fort and Gateway of India, to mark the 100th episode of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s monthly radio programme “Mann ki Baat”, officials said on Sunday.

The programme was aired on Sunday morning.

On Saturday night, the 13 cultural sites, including ASI-protected monuments such as Mughal-era Red Fort in Delhi and Gwalior Fort in Madhya Pradesh, Chittorgarh Fort in Rajasthan, Golconda Fort in Telangana, Navratnagarh Fort in Jharkhand, besides the Prime Minister’s Sanghralaya in Delhi were illuminated to mark the occasion.

“To mark the completion of 100th episode of #MannKiBaat, @MinOfCultureGoI with @ASIGoI is celebrating the occasion in a momentous way through activities like projection mapping shows, photo op, message & audio booths at 13 different iconic monuments across the country,” said a tweet from the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’s official Twitter handle on Sunday.

It also shared pictures of the some of the sites taken during the shows held on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, a senior ASI official said the projection mapping will be done at these 13 sites again on Sunday.

However, later in the evening, another senior ASI official said the show was held only at the Prime Minister’s Sangrahalaya in Delhi, and not at ASI sites.

“The special show, which lasted for 20-25 minutes, was woven around the theme of nation-building and was people-centric. Each location highlighted the heritage and historical value of the site and the region where it was projected,” the Culture Ministry said in a statement on Sunday afternoon.

The 13 sites also included Sun Temple in Odisha, Vellore Fort in Tamil Nadu, Ramnagar Fort in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur, Rang Ghar in Assam, the Residency building in Lucknow, and Sun Temple in Modhera, Gujarat.

The projection mapping shows were open to the public free of cost, and the sites featured various activities and exhibits to make the evening more memorable.

Attendees could listen to pre-installed episodes of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, share their ideas on a message wall, and even take pictures at a specially designed photo booth, the ministry said.

Since its inception on October 3, 2014, “Mann Ki Baat” has been broadcast on the last Sunday of every month at 11 am on All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD). The show reflects the prime minister’s “conviction and desire to have an inclusionary and people-centric approach to governance”, the statement said.

  • I wish more Indian kids, including girls, learn coding early: Tim Cook

I wish more Indian kids, including girls, learn coding early: Tim Cook

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Coding is the only global language and I wish that more Indian students, including girls, learn coding early in school days so that they can create world-class products and solve real-life problems as they grow up, Apple CEO Tim Cook has stressed.

In an interaction with IANS during his India visit last week, Cook said that coding is one thing schools worldwide including in India should embrace early in children’s lives.

“Coding is the only global language. It is a way to express yourself and arguably, we need more of that in the world and bring the world closer,” said Cook, who has always emphasised that coding should be taught as early as elementary school.

    MS Education Academy

Cook told IANS that everyone should learn programming before they graduate from high school.

“It is the most important language you can learn. A programming language is a way to tap into your creativity and unleash it to the world,” he added.

The Apple CEO has always emphasised on including coding in school curriculum, saying a four-year degree is not necessary to be proficient at coding.

Apart from empowering developers via its Bengaluru-based App Accelerator, Apple has taken another significant leap: nurturing young talent in coding across schools and colleges in the country via powerful apps.

For young coders, Apple offers Swift which is a powerful open language that lets everyone build amazing apps.

Last year, Patiala-born Jaskaran Singh and Pune-based Jay Firke were among more than 350 students from 40 countries and regions who were selected as Apple’s ‘2022 Swift Student Challenge’ winner for showcasing extraordinary coding skills.

Singh developed a productivity app called ‘Nudges: Minimal To-Do’, which is available on the App Store.

Firke, 21, is a self-taught developer and learnt coding using online resources. Having studied at MacroVision Academy in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, he is focused on working in the AI and AR space and his submission with ‘PushARBall’ was completely AI driven.

The ‘Swift Student Challenge’ is part of Apple’s Worldwide Developers’ Conference (WWDC).

Moreover, Xcode is an integrated development environment (IDE) for macOS containing a suite of software development tools.

In Cook’s words, every kid should learn to code as coding is the most important second language they can learn.

“Coding is one of the most valuable skills a person can learn. It can open new doors, jumpstart careers, and help big dreams seem like achievable goals. Everyone around the world should have an opportunity to learn how to code,” according to the Apple CEO.

Karnataka polls: NCP fields nine candidates, including ex-BJP MLC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Friday said it has fielded nine candidates in the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections, where the BJP, Congress and the JD(S) are locked in a triangular contest.

The NCP has fielded Uttam Patil from Nippani assembly segment in Belgavi district, a region with dominant Marathi-speaking population, where it had actively participated in the agitation against the desecration of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

It has fielded Masoor Saheb Bilagi from Devar Hippargi, Zameer Ahmad Inamdar (Baswan Bagewadi), Kulappa Chavan (Nagthan), R Hari (Yelburga), R Shankar (Ranebennur), K Suguna (Hagaribommanahalli), SYM Masood Foujdar (Virajpet) and Rehana Bano (Narsimharaja).

    MS Education Academy

Hari is the President of the NCP’s Karnataka unit and Shankar a BJP MLC who quit the party after being denied ticket to contest the May 10 elections.

Elected as the lone MLA of Karnataka Pragnyavantha Janatha Party (KPJP) from Ranebennur constituency in 2018, Shankar later joined the Congress.

However, he withdrew his support to Congress-JD(S) coalition government led by then Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, when a few MLAs from both parties resigned. He was then disqualified considering the fact that he was a Congress member. Shankar joined the BJP and was elected to the Legislative Council.

Shankar quit the BJP and as MLC after being denied the party ticket to contest the May 10 assembly elections.

NCP’s decision to field candidates in Karnataka is seen as an attempt to regain the national party status it had to forego due to its depleted political fortunes in states such as Goa, Meghalaya and Manipur.

The party’s entry into the electoral fray in Karnataka came at a time NCP supremo Sharad Pawar is leading efforts to forge opposition unity for the Lok Sabha elections next year.

The Congress is expecting a big victory in the Karnataka Assembly polls as it yearns for a reversal of its sliding electoral performance since the loss in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The NCP also announced its list of star campaigners Sharad Pawar, Praful Patel, Supriya Sule, P P Mohammad Faizal, Fouzia Khan, Clyde Crasto, among others.
