  • Dalai Lama incident: Congress MLA suggests Chinese hand

Dalai Lama incident: Congress MLA suggests Chinese hand

    [ad_1]

Shimla: Amid a controversy over a video clip purportedly showing the Dalai Lama asking a boy to “suck” his tongue, Himachal Pradesh Congress MLA Ravi Thakur on Saturday suggested the hand of China in it to defame the Tibetan spiritual head.

Thakur, the MLA from the Lahaul and Spiti district, also expressed solidarity with the Buddhist community protesting against what they called a “malicious propaganda” against the Dalai Lama.

Speaking to reporters, the MLA said the Dalai Lama is a respected Buddhist leader and removing him from the scene would help China to take full control over Tibet.

    MS Education Academy

He also blamed television news channels for exploiting the “unfortunate” incident to garner viewership.

On April 10 last, the Dalai Lama apologised to a boy, his family and friends for the “hurt his words may have caused”, after a video clip purportedly showing the Tibetan spiritual head asking him to suck his tongue sparked a row.

In the two-minute-five-second video, the Dalai Lama also asked the child “to look at those good human beings who create peace, and happiness and not follow those who kill other people”.

In a statement, the Tibetan spiritual head’s office said, “A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug. His Holiness wishes to apologise to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused.”

Meanwhile, several social and religious organisations issued a joint statement on Saturday saying that Dalia Lama has solely dedicated his life to serve the humanity and global community.

In the Tibetan tradition, “eat my tongue” is a phrase used particularly by grandparents especially if the child asks for candy which grandparents don’t have, the statement said, and added that defaming the Dalai Lama is undeniably a part of Chinese propaganda.

“Dalai Lama is a global icon of peace, a Nobel laureate. He is an embodiment of compassion and a beacon of hope, love and compassion and has been selflessly and tirelessly promoting religious harmony and peace,” according to the statement.

A playful interaction between the Dalai Lama and a boy, a genuine affection and playful moment have been ruined beyond imagination, the statement added.

Suicide suspected as student dies at IIT Madras, 4th incident in 3 months

    [ad_1]

Chennai: A second-year B Tech student, hailing from Madhya Pradesh, was found dead in his hostel room at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, police said on Friday.

The suspicious death, allegedly by suicide, makes it the fourth such incident occurring at the prestigious institution over the last three months.

The incident came to light on Friday when the deceased student’s friends suspected something amiss when he did not open his hostel room door. They informed the warden who contacted the Kotturpuram police station.

    MS Education Academy

On breaking open the door, police found the dead body and sent it for post-mortem after registering a case.

Earlier this month, on April 2, a PhD student of IIT Madras had died by suicide. Sachin Kumar Jain from West Bengal had died by suicide in his room in Tamil Nadu’s Velachery, triggering protests on campus by students who demanded a probe into the matter.

  • CFPB says employee breached data of 250,000 consumers in ‘major incident’

CFPB says employee breached data of 250,000 consumers in ‘major incident’

    [ad_1]

“This breach raises concerns with how the CFPB safeguards consumers’ personally identifiable information,” House Financial Services Chair Patrick McHenry said in a statement. “Republicans will ensure any bad actors are held accountable.”

CFPB spokesperson Sam Gilford said the bureau has referred the matter to the inspector general and is “taking appropriate action to address this incident.”

“The CFPB takes data privacy very seriously, and this unauthorized transfer of personal and confidential data is completely unacceptable,” Gilford said. “All CFPB employees are trained in their obligations under bureau regulations and Federal law to safeguard confidential or personal information.”

Agency staff told lawmakers they had learned of the breach on Feb. 14 in an email notifying them about the “major incident” that they sent on March 21.

The Wall Street Journal earlier reported the story.

Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-Mich.), chair of the Financial Services Committee’s investigations panel, asked for a briefing no later than April 25 on the “mitigation and remediation efforts, the scale of the breach, as well as efforts made to give the appropriate notifications” in a letter to Chopra Tuesday.

“My understanding is that the transfer of records could have possibly implicated more than 50 financial institutions’ sensitive information,” Huizenga wrote. “If these facts prove to be true, the effects could be widespread and injurious.”

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, also pressed Chopra for details Wednesday in a letter requesting his own briefing by May 8.

Scott said the agency’s recent rule requesting small business lending data — including personally identifiable information — is “highly concerning given that the CFPB has provided limited insight to Congress into the CFPB’s data management practices and efforts to ensure the privacy of consumer and small business data.”

A spokesperson for Senate Banking Chair Sherrod Brown said the agency “followed protocols” by notifying congressional oversight committees.

“The CFPB has taken every step required of the agency, and any wrongdoers must be held accountable for misconduct,” Brown spokesperson Alysa James said.

  • Hazratbal Fire Incident: Seven Residential Houses, Shopping Complex Damaged

Hazratbal Fire Incident: Seven Residential Houses, Shopping Complex Damaged

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: At least seven residential houses, including a ‘U-shaped’ shopping complex, were damaged in a massive fire incident at Dargah Hazratbal in central Kashmir’s Srinagar district this afternoon, officials said.

They said that a fire erupted inside a shop, situated just opposite the Sir Syed Gate of Kashmir University, this morning. “Soon after, the fire raged and spread to many other shops and residential houses even as fire tenders from several nearby stations were called in to douse off the flames on time.”

After several hours of hectic efforts, the fire was brought under control, the officials said, adding that the blaze, however, caused damage to at least seven residential houses and many shops, including Hatrick and Amigos food outlets, which were part of the ‘U-shaped’ shopping complex.

The fire, according to the officials, mainly caused damage to the attic, roofing, and ceiling of the structures.

Confirming this, a F&ES Department official said that it took them several hours to contain the fire. The official, at the same time, expressed regret over the uncalled-for attitude of the motorists who, according to him, blocked the road despite sirens being made by the fire tenders to pave the way for their movement.

“The authorities need to look into this and take necessary measures so that no emergency movement of the fire tenders is hampered in any way,” the official said, adding “Deputing and escorting the fire tenders with police personnel could be a viable thing in such a situation.”

The official, in the meantime, said that the cause of the fire was not immediately known, although the gas cylinder blasts in the food outlets triggered the fire to such an extent.

It has been learned that several structures damaged in the incident are the property of the J&K Waqf Board.

When contacted to ascertain the veracity of these claims, J&K Waqf Board Chairperson Dr. Darakshan Andrabi told GNS that she is visiting the site to assess the situation. “I am visiting the site in a while to know and assess the situation,” she said. (GNS)
