Islamabad: A Pakistani court on Wednesday indicted Imran Khan in the Toshakhana corruption case, in fresh trouble for the former prime minister who was arrested by paramilitary Rangers a day earlier from the Islamabad High Court premises.

Khan, 70, has been in the dock for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch, he received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for profit.

Established in 1974, the Toshakhana is a department under the administrative control of the Cabinet Division and stores precious gifts given to rulers, parliamentarians, bureaucrats, and officials by heads of other governments and states and foreign dignitaries.

On Wednesday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman was indicted in the Toshakhana case. The charge sheet was read out to Khan in the courtroom.

Khan was present in the District and Sessions Court where judge Humayun Dilawar conducted the hearing. Khan has denied any wrongdoing.

The case was filed last year by the Election Commission of Pakistan and Khan had skipped several hearings in the past months.

It alleges that Khan had “deliberately concealed” details of the gifts he retained from the Toshaskhana – a repository where presents handed to government officials from foreign officials are kept – during his time as the prime minister and proceeds from their reported sales.

Khan was disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in October last year for not sharing details of the sales. The election body later filed a complaint with the district court to punish him, under criminal laws, for selling the gifts he had received as prime minister of the country.

Pak high court upholds ousted PM Imran Khan’s arrest ‘Legal’

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday night upheld the arrest of Imran Khan, saying that all legal formalities were fulfilled by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) while carrying out the arrest of the former prime minister, dashing the hopes of his party.

The court issued its reserved ruling, upsetting the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which claimed the arrest was illegal and that the IHC would rule in favour of party chief Imran Khan.

The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday summoned top officials and police officers after paramilitary Rangers dramatically arrested former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan in a corruption case from the court premises but reserved its ruling.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Aamer Farooq took notice of the arrest by paramilitary Rangers when the PTI party chief was present at the court to mark his biometric attendance before the start of the hearing of a corruption case.

Khan, 70, who travelled from Lahore to the federal capital Islamabad, was arrested after the Rangers broke open the glass window and arrested him after beating lawyers and Khan’s security staff.

The arrest of the cricketer-turned-politician comes a day after the powerful army accused him of levelling baseless allegations against a senior officer of the spy agency ISI.

The IHC summoned various officials and heard arguments on the merit of the arrest and if it was legal to arrest someone present inside the court.

After hearing the case, the chief justice reserved the judgment.

The chief justice initially ordered the interior secretary, Inspector General (IG) Police Islamabad and other officials to come and respond to the arrest within 15 minutes.

The chief justice added that he was showing “restraint” in the matter and warned to summon the prime minister if the Islamabad police chief failed to appear.

“Come to court and tell us why Imran has been arrested and in which case,” Justice Farooq said.

IG Akbar Nasir Khan duly appeared before the court and said that Khan had been arrested by the NAB in a case about him and his wife, Bushra Bibi, for alleged corruption.

Khan’s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry told the court that the PTI chief was illegally arrested when he was present inside the court to record his biometric attendance.

Barrister Gohar Khan, another lawyer of Khan, claimed that the cricketer-turned-politician was hit by an iron rod on his head and injured his leg during the arrest.

Khawaja Harris, Khan’s other lawyer, said that the court should take action against NAB as Khan was arrested from inside the court, a violation of the sanctity of the court.

After hearing the lawyers, the chief justice summoned NAB officials before taking a break. When the court reconvened, Director General NAB Rawalpindi Mirza Irfan Baig appeared with Deputy Prosecutor General NAB Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi.

Abbasi told the court that the anti-corruption watchdog was in its legal right to arrest Khan, who had failed to join the investigation in the case.

“An accused can be arrested from any place if resistance is shown,” he said.

Advocate Harris contended the NAB argument by saying that arrest was made in violation of the rules and the court should take action.

“The court should annul the arrest as it is illegal and order the NBA to set Imran Khan free immediately,” he said.

Supporters of the former prime minister stormed the Pakistan Army headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi and the Corps Commander’s residence in Lahore after Khan’s dramatic arrest.

Khan has been facing a slew of cases since his ouster through a no-trust vote in April last year. He has rejected all these cases as political victimisation by the ruling alliance.

Currently, Khan has said he is facing over 140 cases related to terrorism, blasphemy, murder, violence, and inciting violence.

SRINAGAR: The drama continues in Pakistan as the former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, was caught off guard and arrested while heading to his court hearing today. The 70-year-old ex-cricket star turned politician was taken into custody by paramilitary forces at the Islamabad High Court.

The PTI leaders claim that the police went full smash mode, breaking a glass window and forcibly dragging him outside while taking his biometric data. It gets even juicier as this all went down just one day after the army accused Khan of levelling false accusations against a top spy agency officer.

According to a tweet by the Islamabad Police, Imran Khan has been taken into custody in relation to the Qadir Trust case. This case involves allegations that Bahria Town granted land worth millions to Al-Qadir Trust, which is owned by Mr. Khan and his wife.

The police mentioned that the situation is currently “normal,” but the manner in which the arrest was carried out has caused many to question whether it was solely based on the merits of the case. The police also cautioned that Section 144 is in effect and violators will face consequences. Meanwhile, PTI has urged its supporters to take to the streets in protest.

In a tweet, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah stated that Imran Khan had been issued multiple notices but failed to appear in court. Sanaullah also mentioned that the arrest was carried out by the National Accountability Bureau due to allegations of causing losses to the national treasury. Furthermore, he emphasized that no harm or violence was inflicted upon Imran Khan during the arrest.

Imran Khan’s party tweeted a video of him hours before heading to court, in which he reiterated his accusations against Major-General Faisal Naseer, a high-ranking officer in the ISI. Khan claims that Naseer was involved in the attempted assassination against him in Wazirabad.

Pak court warns Imran of bail cancellation for missing hearing

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: A Pakistani court on Wednesday warned former prime minister Imran Khan that it may cancel his interim bail as it expressed its staunch dissatisfaction over the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief’s persistent absence from court hearings in various cases, according to a media report.

Hearing Khan’s interim bail plea in a case involving murder attempt charges filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz parliamentarian Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha last year, Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Aamer Farooq said that the former premier has made a “joke out of the courts” and asked him to appear in the court on Wednesday itself, the Dawn newspaper reported.

More than 100 cases have been registered against Khan since he was voted out of office through a no-confidence motion in April last year. But he has not been arrested in any of the cases so far.

    MS Education Academy

In a few of the cases, including the mutiny and inappropriate language against the Pakistani Army, the 70-year-old leader has been given anticipatory bail by the High Court with conditions that he would be present in the court hearings without fail to which he has agreed.

On Wednesday, while hearing the case filed by PML-N’s Ranjha, Justice Farooq asked Khan to be present in court the same day itself after expressing his dissatisfaction over the former premier’s persistent absences in various cases.

“If the petitioner, Imran Khan, does not appear during court timings [today], will dismiss the interim bail. The judge added that the former premier has made a joke out of the courts,” the report quoted Justice Farooq as saying.

On October 23, 2022, Ranjha lodged a criminal complaint claiming that the shot fired by a Khyber Pakhtunkhwa policeman outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Constitution Avenue on October 21, 2022, was “an attempt on his life” allegedly at the behest of Khan.

The disqualification of Khan in the Toshakhana case had sparked protests in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, especially at Faizabad, resulting in the arrest of three people — a PTI lawmaker and his two police guards.

The clash between the protesters and police had started outside the ECP soon after the verdict disqualifying Khan when the KP police guard of Member of National Assembly Saleh Mohammad fired a gunshot.

On April 18, the IHC had extended Khan’s bail in eight cases — including those pertaining to violence outside the Federal Judicial Complex — till May 3, the report said.

Accepting the PTI chairman’s request for a bail extension and exemption from court appearance that day, Justice Farooq had made it clear then that Khan’s interim bail in all the cases will be cancelled if he did not appear in court on Wednesday, the report said.

However, shortly after the court proceedings, PTI Senator Shibli Faraz said in a tweet that Imran “respected the courts” and implied that the reason for the PTI chief’s absence was his leg getting “injured again” during his appearance at the Lahore High Court on Tuesday.

He wrote: “Imran Khan’s leg got injured again yesterday at the Lahore High Court due to the jostling brought about because of the lack of security provided by the government.

“Doctors have advised [Imran] to rest for 10 days. Upon recuperating, he will again face the cases filed on political bases. [Imran] Khan sahib respects the courts,” the PTI senator was quoted as saying in the report.

Imran claims third assassination attempt hatched against him

    [ad_1]

Lahore: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan informed the Lahore High Court on Tuesday that a “third assassination attempt” has been hatched against him, as per media reports.

During the proceedings, the PTI chief took to the rostrum and informed the court that he had earlier revealed that there will be an assassination attempt on him and everyone saw what happened in Wazirabad, The Express Tribune reported.

He claimed that a second attack was to be carried out against him in the Islamabad judicial complex, but luckily he remained safe.

    MS Education Academy

He brought to the notice of the court that a fresh assassination plan has been hatched against him.

Khan claimed that while he wanted to appear before the courts, he was not provided adequate security nor was he allowed to appear by police officials – referring to the riots outside Islamabad’s Judicial Complex during an earlier court appearance, The Express Tribune reported.

He alsoc alleged that a top intelligence officer was “behind the whole game”, the report said.

Khan had filed a plea seeking direction to the quarters concerned to declare that the “unprecedented, repeated abuse and misuse of criminal law machinery of the state” to register criminal cases against him amounts to a violation of Section 154 of the CrPC 1898, “causing grave unlawful and illegal violation of the petitioner’s fundamental rights under several articles of the Constitution of Pakistan”.

The former premier appeared before the high court’s larger bench headed by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi. The court directed Khan to join the investigation in the cases registered against him after deliberating with concerned quarters to decide whether he would appear before the investigating team or if the team would visit his Zaman Park residence.

The high court also rejected Khan’s plea for interim relief and refused to restrain the authorities from registering new FIRs against him, The Express Tribune reported.

EIU predicts Imran Khan’s victory in Pakistan polls

    [ad_1]

London: A forecast by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has said Pakistan will head to polls in October, if not earlier, and that former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s victory is likely due to widespread discontent among the ruling coalition government.

The analysis division of the Economist Group, EIU, said that political stability and security are “tenuous” in Pakistan, and that economic growth will “slow materially” in 2023, Dawn reported.

“Pakistan will conduct national elections in 2023, where we expect the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party led by Imran Khan to win owing to widespread discontent with the ruling PML-N coalition, led by the incumbent Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif,” the report said, adding that the political environment will remain marred by violence, Dawn reported.

    MS Education Academy

In its baseline forecast, EIU predicted opposition victories in the legislative polls scheduled to be held in Pakistan and Thailand, saying that elections in both countries will be contentious with risk of military interference.

“Pakistan’s election is most likely to occur in October, after the end of the current parliamentary term in August, but it could happen earlier given a worsening economic crisis. Looming loan repayments and a lack of foreign exchange reserves mean the country is teetering on the edge of sovereign debt default.

“Averting this will require painful economic measures, including severe import repression, that could force an early election,” the report said.

It said, Khan, who is predicted to win the election, will have “little choice but to (negotiate with IMF) again”, Dawn reported.
