London: King Charles III, who was officially crowned on Saturday alongside Queen Camilla, wore St Edward’s Crown for the historic coronation ceremony.

The 74-year-old royal was officially crowned the UK’s monarch at Westminster Abbey. His Majesty’s coronation will be a historic occasion, but he has been monarch of the UK since September 2022.

King Charles III was crowned with St Edward’s Crown, the Metro newspaper reported.

    MS Education Academy

It is tradition for the monarch to wear the solid gold St Edward’s Crown often dubbed the centrepiece of the Crown Jewels at the moment of coronation, the report added. It was worn by the King’s late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, during her own coronation in June 1953.

And by the King’s late grandfather, King George VI, at his coronation in May 1937.

The crown dates back hundreds more years to 1661 when it was made for King Charles II.

In December 2022, St Edward’s Crown was removed from its place among the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London to undergo modification work’ ahead of the coronation.

It is topped with an orb and a cross, symbolising the Christian world, and made up of a solid gold frame set with rubies, amethysts, sapphires, garnet, topazes and tourmalines.

It has a velvet cap with an ermine band, the Sky News reported. And in February 2023, Buckingham Palace confirmed that work was complete and the crown was back at the Tower of London.

During the coronation, the King will also wear the Imperial State Crown. One of the Crown Jewels’ best-known pieces, it was poignantly featured among the regalia placed on the late Queen’s coffin during lying-in-state and funeral proceedings.

It is also present during every State Opening of Parliament.

This crown dates back to 1937 and was made by jewellers Garrard & Company for the coronation of George VI. It was also worn by Elizabeth II towards the end of her coronation, as it is lighter to wear than St Edward’s Crown, the report added.

Queen Camilla was crowned with Queen Mary’s Crown, but reset with the Cullinan III, IV and V diamonds.

King Charles III coronation to bring changes – Here’s look at what to expect

    [ad_1]

London: King Charles III coronation is going to bring a seachange in the UK and across Commonwealth realms, prominent being National Anthem, coins, stamps, postboxes and passports to name a few.

Following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, Charles III instantly became King. However, officially he will be crowned on May 6, eight months after he ascended to the throne.

Numerous small changes to British daily life are taking place after King Charles III ascended to the throne. For instance, King Charles portrait will now feature on British money and postage stamps, Los Angeles Times reported.

    MS Education Academy

The British national anthem — “God Save the Queen” or “God Save the King,” depending on who is reigning, as per the news report. After King Charles III ascended to the throne, the first three lines of the UK national anthem are: “God save our gracious King! Long live our noble King! God save the King!

‘God Save The King’ was a patriotic song first publicly performed in London in 1745, according to Buckingham Palace. The patriotic song came to be known as the National Anthem at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Bank of England unveiled the design of King Charles III banknotes on 20 December 2022. The King’s portrait will feature on all four of UK polymer banknotes (£5, £10, £20 and £50). The rest of the design on the banknotes will remain the same. The King’s image will feature on the front of the banknotes and in the see-through security window.

Bank of England expects to issue bank notes featuring the King’s portrait by mid-2024. People in the UK will still be able to use all polymer notes that feature the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Current banknotes featuring the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II will continue to be legal tender and will only be removed from circulation once they become worn or damaged. The banknotes featuring the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II will co-circulate with those featuring King Charles III.

The Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort will take place at Westminster Abbey on May 6. The event will mark almost seven decades since the last coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. He will be the 40th monarch to be crowned at Westminster Abbey.

The Service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. King Charles III and Camilla will arrive at Westminster Abbey in procession from Buckingham Palace, known as ‘The King’s Procession’, Buckingham Palace announced in a statement.

After the Service, King Charles III and Camilla will return to Buckingham Palace in a larger ceremonial procession, known as ‘The Coronation Procession’. Other members of the royal family will join King Charles III and Camilla in this procession. The King and the Queen Consort accompanied by the members of the royal family will appear on the balcony to conclude the day’s ceremonial events.

More than 6,000 men and women of the UK’s Armed Forces and nearly 400 armed forces personnel from at least 35 Commonwealth countries will participate in the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, according to Buckingham Palace.

It is for the first time since 1937, the coronation of King Charles III will include the crowning of a Queen Consort. King George VI’s wife Queen Elizabeth was the last Queen Consort to be crowned. King Charles III’s coronation comes almost 70 years after the coronation of his mother.

On 6 February 1952, King George VI died after a prolonged illness and Princess Elizabeth immediately acceded to the throne, becoming Queen Elizabeth II. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. The ceremony was conducted by Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Geoffrey Fisher.

Representatives of the peers, the Commons and all the great public interests in the UK, the Prime Ministers and leading citizens of the other Commonwealth nations, and representatives of foreign states were present in the coronation ceremony.

Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation was the first to be televised and for most people, it was the first time they had watched an event on television. 27 million people in the UK watched the ceremony on television while 11 million listened on the radio.

How will King Charles III coronation be different from Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation?

Both the processional route and service will be shorter, CNN reported. There will be difference in the number of guests participating in the coronation. Another difference is the number of guests. In 1953, the guest list was so long that temporary structures had to be erected within the abbey to accommodate more than 8,000 people who were invited to the coronation, as per the CNN report.

Some of the changes to the ancient Christian ceremony, the theme of which is “called to serve” include the King praying aloud, participation of religious leaders from other faiths, involvement of female clergy and including other languages spoken in the British Isles, as per the CNN report.

Furthermore, the traditional homage of peers has been replaced with a “homage of the people.” The development will witness the people being invited to become a part of “a chorus of millions of voices enabled for the first time in history to participate in this solemn and joyful moment.”

A Lambeth Palace spokesperson called the new homage an “opportunity for those who wish to be given voice within the service, and for those at home to have a chance to be an extension of the abbey congregation,” as per the news report. The Lambeth Palace spokesperson said the change was “an invitation” and not “an expectation or request.”

Big Ben lit up with Coronation emblem for King Charles III

    [ad_1]

London: The Elizabeth Tower, popularly known as Big Ben and one of London’s most iconic landmarks, will be lit up with special royal imagery every night this week in the lead-up to the Coronation ceremony of King Charles III and Queen Camilla on Saturday.

The colourful projection, inspired by the Coronation emblem of the national flowers of the UK, will take place every night from Thursday till Sunday.

The flowers will seem to grow around the clock tower in the colours of the Union Flag red, white and blue before the words of the country’s National Anthem God Save The King’ appear across the building.

    MS Education Academy

The projection culminates with the Coronation emblem, designed by Sir Jony Ive.

“The design was inspired by King Charles’ love of the planet, nature, and his deep concern for the natural world. The emblem speaks to the happy optimism of spring and celebrates the beginning of this new Carolean era for the United Kingdom.

The gentle modesty of these natural forms combine to define an emblem that acknowledges both the joyful and profound importance of this occasion,” Ive said, explaining the design.

Big Ben refers to the Great Bell of one of the world’s most famous clocks within the Palace of Westminster. The clock tower was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the mother of King Charles III.

The Coronation emblem has been dubbed one of the central images for the long celebratory Coronation weekend in the UK.

It will feature throughout the Coronation celebrations in May, including the service at Westminster Abbey in London and the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle, as well as nationwide events, street parties and community gatherings.

The emblem is also being used for all official merchandise commemorating the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla and across digital and social media.

  • King Charles III coronation: Know list of Commonwealth realms

King Charles III coronation: Know list of Commonwealth realms

    [ad_1]

The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom (UK) as the monarchs and heads of state of Commonwealth realms is set to take place on May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey.

As the UK prepares for this historic event, it is worthwhile to look at the list of Commonwealth realms and their relationship with the British crown.

    List of Commonwealth realms

There are currently 15 Commonwealth realms, including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

    MS Education Academy

    The complete list includes

    1. Antigua and Barbuda
    2. Australia
    3. The Bahamas
    4. Belize
    5. Canada
    6. Grenada
    7. Jamaica
    8. New Zealand
    9. Papua New Guinea
    10. Saint Kitts and Nevis
    11. Saint Lucia
    12. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
    13. Solomon Islands
    14. Tuvalu, and
    15. The United Kingdom.

It is worth noting that the number of Commonwealth realms has changed over the years. In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II was the monarch of the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). However, new realms were created after the independence of former colonies, and some realms have become republics.

The most recent country to become a republic is Barbados, which did so on November 30, 2021.

Are Australians, Canadians and New Zealanders still loyal to the British crown?

The loyalty of Commonwealth realms to the British crown has been a topic of discussion for many years. Ahead of the coronation of King Charles, the topic has become important. The support for the monarchy varies across Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

While the majority of Australians support a republic, New Zealand retains ‘God Save the Queen’ (now ‘God Save the King’) as its second national anthem. Over time, cultural diversity in these countries has de-emphasized their British heritage, challenging a collective identity that had previously been articulated around Britishness.

An analysis of national electoral studies in each country reveals changing levels of support for the monarchy.

In Australia, the majority of citizens support a republic, though support has softened since the failed 1999 referendum on the issue. In Canada, support for the monarchy is slightly higher, but has decreased drastically since the end of the 1980s, coinciding with a period of constitutional politics.

In contrast, most citizens in New Zealand prefer to retain their ties to the British monarch, and the issue of becoming a republic is less divisive.

    King Charles III coronation details

On coronation day, King Charles III will wear King George VI’s crimson robe of state and Queen Consort Camilla will adorn Queen Elizabeth II’s crimson robe of state. The coronation ceremony is expected to take place between 11 am and 1 pm local time at Westminster Abbey.

The coronation of King Charles III will be a grand event and will be attended by several dignitaries from around the world. All the royals will arrive in procession from Buckingham Palace for the ceremony. The coronation will mark the beginning of a new era in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth realms.

Apart from being the monarch of Commonwealth realms, King Charles III is also the head of the Commonwealth, which is the ceremonial leader of the Commonwealth of Nations. The Commonwealth includes 56 member states, including India. Out of 56 countries, 52 were formerly part of the British Empire.

As the world watches the coronation of King Charles III, the relationship between the Commonwealth realms and the British crown will continue to be an important topic of discussion.

  • ‘Beware of negative people’: Yusuf Islam writes manifesto for King Charles III

‘Beware of negative people’: Yusuf Islam writes manifesto for King Charles III

    [ad_1]

Yusuf Islam, the musician formerly known as Cat Stevens, has addressed King Charles III ahead of his coronation with a 10-point list entitled Manifesto for a Good King.

“Even if you are a King, you are still a servant of God”, the list begins, and goes on to include instructions to “feed the hungry”, “help the sick and homeless”, “beware of negative people in your circle” and “listen to constructive criticism”.

In an additional message, the 74-year-old singer-songwriter said: “One of the privileges of being an artist is to express what seems unimaginable, and then hang it up there for people to ponder; we can say things that others can’t. Sure, I know full well music can’t necessarily solve the world’s problems, but it can help to direct the narrative.”

He released a new single, the title track from upcoming album King of a Land, alongside the manifesto, and said that the major message of the track – to not “forget that there’s One above you, and be careful to look out for those who are below you” – applies to all of those in leadership positions.

The song is Islam’s first release since 2020’s Tea for the Tillerman 2, a reworking of his 1970 album, and his first brand new music since 2017.

He began releasing music in 1966, putting out 11 albums within the first 12 years of his career. After converting to Islam in 1977, and subsequently adopting the name Yusuf Islam, he ceased releasing music in 1979, auctioning all his guitars for charity and instead choosing to devote himself to running Islamic schools for children.

He returned to pop music in 2006 with An Other Cup, his first release under the name Yusuf, an alias he continued to perform under for his next two albums, 2009’s Roadsigner and 2014’s Tell ’Em I’m Gone.

Now known professionally as Yusuf/Cat Stevens, the artist has long used music as a tool to engage with current affairs and to open up conversations with leaders and political figures.

In 2016, he performed in a rare live concert by the Houses of Parliament to coincide with the release of his single He Was Alone, which draws attention to the plight of lone child refugees.

Speaking at the time, he said: “I have agencies saying to me: ‘We can get you so many millions [to do a tour],’ but I am not interested in that. I am more interested in the cause and in bridge-building.”

To honour 2021’s International Day of Peace, he recorded a new version of his 1971 hit Peace Train in collaboration with over 25 musicians from 12 countries, raising money for Playing for Change, an initiative that builds music and art schools for children.

Alongside his musical endeavours, he is also at the helm of the charity Peace Train, which provides food, safe water and playgrounds across the world.

Early last year, the organisation supplied widowed families in Sindh, Pakistan with livestock, tools and seeds; in October, he performed in Istanbul and Ankara to raise money for the charity.

King of a Land, his 17th studio album, is said to be more than a decade in the making; across its 12 songs, he invites the listener to imagine an alternative universe, “where happy endings can possibly happen”.

The full album will be released on 16 June.

    5. Help the sick and homeless.

    6. Beware of negative people in your circle.

    7. Everyone has a part to play, teach them to work together.

    8. Be just and don’t show favouritism.
