A Trailblazer of Art and Identity, Altina Schinasi

Exploring the Life and Legacy of Altina Schinasi

Altina Schinasi was born in 1907 to a prominent Sephardic Jewish family in New York City. Her upbringing in a privileged yet culturally rich environment laid the foundation for her artistic inclinations. However, Schinasi’s journey was far from ordinary. At a time when societal expectations for women were limited, she dared to defy conventions, pursuing her passions with unbridled determination.

The Intersection of Art, Identity, and Innovation

Schinasi’s work was more than simply beautiful; it served as a potent medium for her to examine who she was and the world around her. In order to push the frontiers of art, she frequently used cubism, abstraction, and surrealism into her works. She did not, however, only create on canvas. Schinasi also dabbled in cinema, becoming as one of the first artists to take an interest with this developing genre.

A Journey Through Altina Schinasi’s Artistic Evolution

Schinasi’s artistic journey was characterized by a relentless pursuit of self-expression. Her earlier works often exuded a sense of vibrant energy, with bold colors and geometric shapes dominating the canvas. As she evolved as an artist, her style transformed, incorporating elements of surrealism that added depth and introspection to her creations. This evolution was a reflection of her personal growth, paralleling her exploration of identity and the human experience.

Delhi HC directs concealing identity of minor girl seeking abortion

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Medical Superintendent of LNJP Hospital to withhold the identity of the 14-year-old who is seeking to have her 11-week-old pregnancy terminated.

Additionally, Justice Prathiba M. Singh directed the SHO concerned of the Delhi Police to make sure that neither the identity of the minor nor that of her family be revealed while carrying out the investigation.

The court disposed of the plea for pregnancy termination made by the minor through her mother.

    MS Education Academy

No licenced medical practitioner was willing to perform a pregnancy abortion while hiding her name, it was argued on behalf of the victim’s counsel.

The court granted relief to the minor and took note of its order from January 23 in which the Delhi government was directed to issue a circular directing that the identity of a minor girl who is seeking medical termination of her pregnancy and her family shall not be disclosed in the report prepared by registered medical practitioners to the police.

The apex court’s decision in X v. The Principal Secretary Health and Family Welfare Govt NCT of Delhi & Anr, which exempted registered medical practitioners from being required to report offences of “consensual sexual activity” under the POCSO Act, was cited by the court.

Given the young girl’s age and the gestational time, the court asked that she get in touch with the LNJP Hospital’s medical superintendent and directed that the pregnancy be terminated because the gestational period is within the MTP Act’s permitted range.

“In terms of the judgment, the report lodged by the concerned registered medical practitioner shall be filed without disclosing identity of the victim of her family. The SHO concerned shall maintain that the identity is not disclosed during the process of investigation. The petition is disposed of,” the court ordered.

  • Florida expands ban on sexual orientation and gender identity teachings through high school

Florida expands ban on sexual orientation and gender identity teachings through high school

    [ad_1]

    lgbtq issues florida 17620

“The curriculum and the standards taught in an academic classroom have nothing to do with the school’s compassion and being able to provide services to individual students,” Education Commissioner Manny Diaz said at the meeting in Tallahassee. “They’re not being shunned, none of this is being addressed here.”

“We shouldn’t be asking our teachers to be teaching mental health or providing that,” Diaz added. “They should be more of a conduit to pass that on.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is expected to announce a bid for president soon, defended last year’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation and signed it into law in March 2022, saying at the time that “In Florida, we not only know that parents have a right to be involved — we insist that parents have a right to be involved.” At the time, Democrats and LGBTQ advocates decried the law and warned that it could marginalize LGBTQ students and their families.

DeSantis’ support for the legislation also sparked a yearlong fight with the Walt Disney Co., which opposed the bill and law. The governor pushed the GOP-controlled Florida Legislature to curtail the California-based entertainment giant’s authority over its central Florida theme parks, though the company and state are still feuding over it.

The changes backed Wednesday bolster a rule the board initially established in October carrying out the controversial bill from last year. This policy outlined that teachers “shall not intentionally” lead instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through grade 3.

Now, it stipulates that instruction on those two topics is also prohibited in pre-kindergarten and grades 4-12 unless the lessons are required by state standards or required for a reproductive health course, which parents can opt-out students.

These provisions are baked into Florida’s professional code of conduct for educators that are meant to hold teachers accountable. As such, the state education commissioner can pursue disciplinary action against the license of any teacher who violates that code, including the expansions approved Wednesday.

LGBTQ advocates opposed the rule change, contending it unfairly targets and bullies the LGBTQ community. They also argued that it puts the careers of educators in jeopardy for violating what some consider vague policies.

“This rule is by design a tool for curating fear, anxiety and the erasure of our LGBTQ community,” Joe Saunders, former state legislator and Equality Florida’s senior political director, told the board Wednesday.

The rule also had its supporters at the meeting, including conservative groups such as the Christian Family Coalition, Florida Citizens Alliance and Moms for Liberty. Members of Moms for Liberty contended the policy would strengthen relationships between parents and their children, and that it’s necessary to ensure teachers are leading lessons approved by the state.

“The crowding out of academic learning, which his already deficient, by inappropriate sexual classroom content should be considered educational malpractice,” Yvette Benarroch, who leads the Collier County chapter of Moms for Liberty, told the board.

The parental rights expansions approved by the state board go beyond grade-level scope of legislation GOP lawmakers are currently advancing in the Legislature.

One bill that already passed the House, FL HB1069 (23R), would broaden the state’s prohibition on teaching about sexual identity and gender orientation from kindergarten through third grade to pre-K through eighth grade. It also restricts how school staff and students can use pronouns on K-12 campuses.

The measure is part of the push by Florida conservatives to uproot what they say is “indoctrination” in schools and is one of several bills taken up this session focusing on the LGBTQ community and transness.

  • Woman hit-drag case: Accused’s identity proved through CCTV footage

Woman hit-drag case: Accused’s identity proved through CCTV footage

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The identity of four accused in the hit-and-run case where a 20-year-old woman was dragged to death while trapped under a car here on new year’s day was established based on CCTV footage, statements of witnesses and other scientific evidence, the Delhi Police said in its charge sheet.

According to the final report, the evidence proved the presence of the four accused — Amit Khanna, Krishan, Manoj Mittal and Mithun — in the car.

The charge sheet cited the statements of six eyewitnesses, including the victim’s friend, the person who informed police about the body, an autorickshaw driver, and a person who was in the car with the four accused but was dropped at Sultanpuri before the incident.

    MS Education Academy

It said the CCTV footage revealed crucial evidence, such as the presence of all the accused at a dhaba before the incident and in Rohini Sector 1 after.

“It has also been revealed by the footage that the accused knew that the victim was entangled… The accused didn’t try to save the life of the woman. After getting back in the car, they intentionally dragged her for a long distance to kill her,” the charge sheet claimed.

It stated that the DNA profile generated from the strands of hairs recovered from the car matched with the profile generated from the blood samples of Khanna, Mittal and Krishan.

Also, the DNA profile generated from the blood spots present on the clothes of the accused matched with that generated from the blood sample of the victim, the charge sheet stated.

DNA profiles generated from the exhibits recovered from the spot along with those lifted from the car, the cloth of the victim and from the clothes of Manoj Mittal, Mithun and Krishan were found similar to the DNA profile generated from the blood on gauze, the charge sheet said.

“A forensic science laboratory team lifted the blood in gauze from the offending car and the spot where the body of the deceased was found. DNA profile thus prepared matched with the DNA profile prepared from the blood in gauze preserved during the post-mortem of the deceased,” the charge sheet said.

The report said that the owner of the vehicle, Ashutosh Bhardwaj, voluntarily permitted his car to be driven by Amit Khanna, who did not have a valid driving licence. Also, Khanna’s blood test revealed the presence of alcohol above the permissible limit, it said.

“During the interrogation, Ashutosh disclosed that when he came to know about the incident and that the person driving the car did not possess a valid driving licence, he, Ankush and other accused planned to plant another person possessing a valid driving licence as the driver of the offending car at the time of the incident,” the charge sheet said.

“Ashutosh helped in the disappearance of the evidence of offence and gave false information to shield the accused,” it said.

Police arrested Deepak Khanna (26), Amit Khanna (25), Krishan (27), Mithun (26), and Manoj Mittal in the case on January 2.

Co-accused Ashutosh Bhardwaj and Ankush, were earlier given bail by the court, while the bail plea of Deepak Khanna was rejected by a sessions court.

Amit Khanna, Krishan, Mithun and Manoj Mittal have been accused of murder, while Amit Khanna and Ashutosh were booked under the Motor Vehicles Act.

It said all the accused were booked for the offences of criminal conspiracy, destruction of evidence, harbouring offender, common intention and false information with an intent to cause a public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person.

Delhi Police has levelled additional charges against Amit Khanna for the offences of rash driving and causing hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others.

LinkedIn introduces new ways to verify identity, work

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Professional networking platform LinkedIn has introduced new ways to verify your identity and where you work as part of verification, which will be free for all members.

“Starting today, we’re rolling out three additional ways to verify your identity and where you work. We believe verification should be for everyone on LinkedIn, that’s why every feature will be available and free to all our members,” LinkedIn said in a blogpost.

LinkedIn is partnering with CLEAR, a secure identity platform, to provide verification for its members in the US.

    MS Education Academy

Starting this month, users can display on their profile that they verified their identity with CLEAR and to do so, all they need is a US government-issued ID and phone number.

Another way includes verifying “where you work with your company email”.

Users now can verify where they work using their company-issued email addresses.

According to the company, around 50 million members globally are on LinkedIn, and there are over 4,000 companies, and this is one more way to demonstrate the authenticity of your profile.

The company said that it will be rolling this feature out to more companies and expanding eligibility.

Moreover, LinkedIn members can also verify where they work with Microsoft Entra.

The company is partnering with Microsoft to allow organisations to leverage the Microsoft Entra Verified ID platform to issue digital workplace IDs for free, enabling workers to display the verification on their LinkedIn profiles.

The feature will be rolling out at the end of April, and the company plans to make this available to dozens of participating companies reaching more than two million LinkedIn members.

  • Maulana Azad’s erasure from NCERT books due to his Muslim identity: NCP

Maulana Azad’s erasure from NCERT books due to his Muslim identity: NCP

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to ‘erase’ the name of India’s first Education Minister and Bharat Ratna, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, from history because he was a Muslim.

NCP national spokesperson Clyde Crasto said that the BJP-led government at the Centre is using the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) to wipe out Maulana Azad’s identity and his glorious contributions from India’s education system.

Citing instances, he said a para in the first chapter of the old Class XI NCERT political science textbook said: “The Constituent Assembly had eight major Committees on different subjects. Usually, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad or Ambedkar chaired these Committees.”

    MS Education Academy

“However, in the new version of the same textbook by NCERT, the name of Maulana Azad has been omitted and the same sentence now reads: ‘Usually, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Patel or B.R. Ambedkar chaired these committees’. This is truly unfortunate,” Crasto said.

Suspecting a systematic conspiracy to delete Maulana Azad from history, the NCP leader pointed out how last year the Minority Affairs Ministry had abruptly discontinued the ‘Maulana Azad Fellowship’, which was started in 2009 (by the former UPA government) to provide financial help to students from six notified minorities for a period of five years.

The NCERT comes under the Government of India which is currently led by the BJP, and therefore the question that comes to the mind is whether they are seeking to obliterate the name of India’s first Education Minister because of his religion, Crasto said.

“There appears no other reason why they would do this to the first Education Minister of Independent India and one of our leading freedom fighters. The NCERT must clarify and answer to the citizens why Maulana Azad’s name is missing in the new version of the textbook, and how it will rectify this error,” Crasto said.

Maulana Azad, a distinguished Islamic scholar, author, academician and a prominent freedom fighter, was elected as the youngest President of Indian National Congress aged 35, and later led the historic Khilafat Movement.

After Independence, Maulana Azad served as India’s first Education Minister for over 10 years, during which he laid the foundations for the country’s massive academic network. Acknowledging his contributions, his birthday – November 11 – is celebrated as National Education Day.

Corruption has become identity of Telangana government: Nadda

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: BJP national President J.P. Nadda on Friday termed Telangana’s BRS government as Bhrashtachar Rishwat Sarkar and said that it has no right to remain in power.

“This has become the identity of Telangana government. This BRS party has become Bhrashtachar Rishwat Sarkar,” he said while virtually inaugurating new BJP offices in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

He recalled that when Telangana was formed in 2014, it was a surplus state but today the state finds itself in a debt of Rs 3.29 lakh crore.

Nadda ridiculed the tall claims made when Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) became Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), saying it has changed its name but it has not changed its ways.

The BJP chief referred to the summons of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to CM KCR’s daughter Kavitha in Delhi liquor scam case. “This is an unfortunate situation. Telangana’s image has become of a corrupt state,” he said

Stating that mere change of name does not work, Nadda said people of Telangana knew that the TRS and the BRS are same. “People of Telangana are giving a message to you. You need VRS (voluntary retirement scheme),” he said.

He alleged that there are scams in all sectors in Telangana. He reiterated that the Kaleshwaram irrigation scheme had become an ATM for the government, alleging that the project cost was inflated from Rs 40,000 crore to 1.40 lakh crore.

Nadda also said that the Modi government was doing its best to help Andhra Pradesh but the state government failed to implement the schemes of the Central government. “In the days to come we have to give a good and clean government to the people of Andhra Pradesh to lead the state,” he said and appealed to people to support BJP.

The BJP chief said that the Congress party has been wiped out from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

He launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for refusing to apologise for using insulting words about OBCs, and claimed that the OBCs will never forgive Gandhi and the Congress.

“This party has lost all shame. Even when it has shrunk to this level, its leaders are still egoistic and very much arrogant. They insult the nation, make shameful remarks about the OBC community. This is all unfortunate,” he said.

Court summons Lucknow police commissioner, 8 other cops for disclosing juvenile accused’s identity

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: A special court here has directed the Lucknow police commissioner and eight other police personnel to appear before it for allegedly making public the identity of a juvenile apprehended in connection with a case of fraud.

The court fixed April 4 for appearance of these police personnel.

Judge Vijendra Tripathi passed the order on Tuesday on a complaint filed by Sunil Kumar, who is ‘peshkar’ (reader) of the Juvenile Justice Board.

Kumar had filed the complaint on the instructions of the board as it had been apprised that the police personnel had willingly disclosed the identity of the juvenile on the Facebook wall of Lucknow police commissioner.

It was apprised to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court that the accused was held by the police in a fraud case and was produced in the court which referred the matter to the Juvenile Justice Board after learning that he was a juvenile.

Kumar said in the court that despite the accused being a juvenile, his identity was disclosed on the Facebook wall of the Lucknow police commissioner on February 7 and 8, based on which several newspapers and news channels broadcast the news.

The court was informed that the act of the police was “totally illegal” and against the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.

  • Gindan Tamashe Asked Serious, Uncomfortable Questions on Existence, Identity

Gindan Tamashe Asked Serious, Uncomfortable Questions on Existence, Identity

    [ad_1]

    by Maleeha Sofi

SRINAGAR: Novelist and playwright Sohan Lal Koul has remained a popular choice for theatre because he has his hand on the pulse of society. In the last festival, at least three of his plays were staged in a single festival.

Koul’s Gindan Tamashe which was staged at Tagore Hall tackled the issues related to the issue of existence and identity. It asked very pertinent questions and provoked the audience to stay engaged.

It started in a set of the semi-lit enclosure with no doors and a single window. It was messy with three dustbins, some dirty clothes, tissue papers all over the floor and two beds on which two people were sleeping.

The beds exhibited a contrast. One had a white and blue bed sheet with faded colours. The pillow was stripped without any cover. The other bed was a shining, bright, and floral red colour bedsheet. The pillow was also covered with black velvet floral cover giving it an exquisite look. It suggests the two persons resting belonged to two different classes.

The man – who is later given the name Seen, wakes from the ‘inferior’ bed wakes up. He seems to be around 40-50 years old. His face shows confusion as if seeking answers to some of his frustrations. Finally, he breaks the silence and starts asking himself “Who am I?” and “Where am I?”

    Gindan Tamash 2
A group photograph of Kashmir theatre artists who staged Dr Sohan Lal Koul’s Gindan Tamash (toy) at Tagore Hall, Srinagar on March 4, 2023. KL Image: Bilal Bahadur

Soon, he sees the man on the other bed and assumes he would have answers to his questions. After several attempts, he wakes him up but he also has no answers to any of his queries. He – later given the name Sheen – was in his twenties. Both of them have perplexed thoughts. They ask each other questions about their past, existence, and the mistake that would have led them there, and the biggest mystery at that point was their identification.

The whole conversation between Seen and Sheen showed a serious debate over one’s existence in the world. Sheen claimed to be the master of Seen. He wanted to continue it the same way no matter if they remember anything or not. However, their debate nullified the difference in caste and status between them. Seen got offended initially when Sheen sat on his bed as he was poor apparently. With the progress in their discussion, they exchanged their seats subconsciously. It made one thing clear while they struggled to recall their identification, they forgot their class differences. From death to life, fiction to reality, punishment to freedom, they discussed all the possibilities of their identity. They yearned to get a second chance so that they live happily. This came after a series of suicidal thoughts exhibited by the duo in the frustration of knowing themselves and their identity.

Amid the arguments, they receive a letter from the window. They do not open it assuming that it might be from the angel of death. Again, a deep conversation about the letter takes place. Somehow, they decide to read it. The letter has been addressed to Gindan Tamashe (Toys). It was written by a child asking his toys to return home. The child had thrown them away earlier because of the pandemic. This led them to question themselves, once again, ‘are we just toys thrown in the garbage’?

Soon another character jumps into the sets. He is well-dressed but equally fearful. On asking why and how he is here, he responds by saying he is being chased by the angel of death and this – the set – is the safest place. He tells them the angel has spread posters everywhere about him and kept a reward on him. The two men who were already dominating the set started planning that they should inform the angel and claim the bounty.

They started executing the conspiracy for which they needed to open the window. As they opened it, a voice from the window tells them that opening the window was the condition for taking their life. Now that they have opened, their lives will be taken away. The voice ordered them to go back to their respective beds. Sheen requested Seen to exchange the beds as he wanted to give him comfort, which he did not get his whole life. They sleep on each other’s beds.

The next scene shows them as toys. A girl with her father comes to take them along with her. Her father gives her permission to take only one and she takes the one on the bed that appeared poor for the same reason. It conveyed that Sheen stayed as a toy and Seen was given a second chance. However, he wasn’t happy with the second chance now because he is all alone and cries till the end.

The play by the Young Dramatist Society was directed by Altaf Hussain and designed by Mushtaq Baqal. The overall supervision was done by Javid Gilani. Seen was played by Shahzad Shabir, and Sheen by Shahid Malik. The third-person man escaping from death was played by Imran Farooq, father and daughter were played by Tanveer Ahmed and Arbeen Jan respectively.

The costumes were provided by Shabir Ahmad Mir, lighting was designed by Balbir Singh, Music arrangement by Rasiq Khan, Production management by Javid Khan, stage management by Khursheed Ahmad Mir (Yamberzal Youth Club), Audio and video arrangement by Wasaaqat Mehraj. The coordinators were Shabir Ahmad Bhat and Latif Ahmad Shah.

Sohan Lal Koul, it may be recalled here is a popular playwright. A novelist and having a doctorate in Urdu, he has written several novels and plays. His novels include Waehshi Kaeth, Panien Gunah, Yele saer PaethGoav, Abysmal and Ded. He has also written a few plays. He has worked as a programme executive in Doordarshan. In a 13-day Annual Drama Festival at Tagore Hall in the year 2021, three of his plays were presented.

Mehrauli demolition drive: Delhi HC seeks identity documents of residents

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday asked counsel for Goshiya Colony Sewa Samiti and others residing in Mehrauli area of south Delhi to submit a list of identity documents of 467 residents in a plea challenging the colony’s demolition by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

A bench of Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora asked advocate Anupradha Singh, counsel for petitioner, to provide a list of the identity documents to counsel of the DDA and Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB).

The judge also asked her to file a rejoinder to the affidavits filed by the DDA and DUSIB, for which the court granted her one week’s time.

The court then listed the matter for the next hearing on March 14.

On February 17, the High Court had directed the DDA and DUSIB to file affidavits in the plea.

The plea challenges the December 12, 2022 demolition notice, wherein the DDA planned to carry out a demolition drive in the entire Goshiya Colony, which is in existence for more than five decades and consists of over 600 houses, with approximately 4,000 population.

The plea stated, citing the ‘Ajay Maken and others vs Union of India’ case that a demolition drive cannot be carried out without following the protocol for removal of jhuggis as per the order of High Court.

The petition claimed that the land-owning agency cannot begin the demolition process until the DUSIB determines that the jhuggis are not eligible for rehabilitation.

However, the DDA in its affidavit has stated that the land falls in Mehrauli Archaeological Park which forms part of the Southern Central Ridge where a large number of historical world-famous monuments exist which are protected/unprotected and maintained by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI).

It is stated in the affidavit that according to DDA’s land record, the land subject matter of the present petition false in khasra number 216 and 217 villages Ladha Sarai Mehrauli New Delhi and that Khasra Number 217 is acquired land.

The land has been set apart as green in the master plan of Delhi since the beginning and is to be developed and maintained as green and to be conserved under the Mehrauli Heritage Zone, the DDA’s affidavit stated.
