Hyderabad’s air quality to be improved by reducing particular matter

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Implementation of an action plan for reducing air pollutants, e-waste and construction and demolition (C&D) waste processing to improve the air quality in the city was reviewed by the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB).

Special chief secretary, of environment, science and technology, Rajat Kumar, conducted a review meeting with a team from IIT-Kanpur, member secretary of the board Neetu Prasad, and others on Monday.

A presentation made by an academic from IIT-Kanpur, Mukesh Sharma, on a source apportionment study carried out in the city revealed that major sources that added to air pollution were identified as road dust, vehicular emissions, open burning, secondary pollutants and industries.

Particulate matter of sizes less than 10 and 2.5 microns in the air are the add-ons to the pollution, stated Mukesh during the meeting.

Deliberations about the additional measures to be taken for an immediate reduction in the particulate matter were discussed by the officials who decided to conduct a series of workshops to brainstorm on the action plan.

Speaking during the meeting, Rajat Kumar said that the Centre is releasing funds under the 15th Finance Commission to Hyderabad for taking up important activities to reduce air pollution.

“Based on the results of the study, the Air Quality Monitoring Committee (AQMC) will allocate the funds to different activities in the proportion to the source contribution,” he added.

Citing the reduction in air pollution in Nalgonda town owing to various interventions, Rajat Kumar said the focus is now on Hyderabad.

He further reviewed the implementation of the e-Waste Management Rules and noted that there has been an improvement in e-waste collection from 30,000 tonnes to 44,000 tonnes per year.

The main challenge still remains with e-waste collection from the domestic sector and also with training of the informal sector for scientific processing of the same.

Rajat Kumar directed the TSPCB to increase awareness programmes through different media to sensitise all sections and improve the collection mechanism from the domestic sector.

The construction and demolition waste management was also reviewed which revealed that the total capacity has been increased from 1000 tonnes per day to 2000 tonnes per day.

Rajat Kumar further instructed that the C&D processed material should be made mandatory for re-use in different projects and made suggestions for the study of such policies in other states

  • Hyderabad’s Sardar Mahal to embellish Charminar area for tourists: KTR

Hyderabad’s Sardar Mahal to embellish Charminar area for tourists: KTR

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana IT minister KT Rama Rao asserted Sardar Mahal, located in the Kotla Alijah, Mughalpura, in the city is set to become a major attraction for tourists around Charminar.

Remarking on the progress made in the restoration plan of Sardar Mahal, the minister took to Twitter and said that the mahal would enthral tourists once completely restored.

The chief secretary of Urban Development, Arvind Kumar shared pictures of the mahal following the completion of cleaning works on Wednesday.

The secretary stated that the mahal looked attractive even as only cleaning works had been carried out and additional restoration works were yet to begin.

Arvind Kumar recently also revealed that Sardar Mahal will have an art gallery, cafe and heritage accommodation on the lines of Neemrana Fort Palace in Rajasthan.

    Nizam’s legacy

According to officials, Sardar Mahal, a palace built in European style by Nizam VI Mir Mahboob Ali Khan in 1900, will be conserved and restored to its original structure with additional architectural works.

Though Mahboob Ali Khan, the then ruler of Hyderabad state, built the palace for one of his beloved consorts, Sardar Begum, she refused to inhabit this token of love as it did not live up to her expectations. No one stayed there but the building took her name.

It was declared a heritage building by the Heritage Conservation Committee and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) took over Sardar Mahal in 1965 due to outstanding property taxes.

Restoration works worth Rs 30 crore

As per plans announced earlier, the heritage structure will be developed as a cultural hub with a museum, a 10-12 room hotel and various activities including exhibitions and performances. However, plans for the hotel have reportedly been dropped.

The proposed activities include cultural events, workshops, art exhibitions, heritage walks and hospitality. The project has been taken up in Public Private Partnership (PPP) with the Built, Operate and Transfer concept.

According to QQSUDA, this will create and strengthen the identity of Hyderabad as a synonym for heritage, creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation at local and regional levels and maximise the historical, cultural, social and tourist potential of the Charminar area.

In April last year, KTR with Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi formally launched the works to conserve, restore and strengthen Sardar Mahal.

KTR had announced that the project, taken up at a cost of Rs 30 crores, will turn into the cultural hub of the city, adding an attraction for thousands of tourists who visit Charminar, Makkah Masjid, Chowmahalla Palace and other monuments every day.

  • Hyderabad’s Numaish 2023 comes to end today

Hyderabad’s Numaish 2023 comes to end today

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Numaish, Hyderabad’s popular 45-day-long annual exhibition is all set to conclude today.

The 82nd edition of the All India Industrial Exhibition, popularly known as Numaish, was inaugurated by Telangana ministers Harish Rao, Mohammed Mehmood Ali, T. Srinivas Yadav, and Vemula Prashanth Reddy on January 1.

The All India Industrial Exhibition Society (AIIES) has allotted stalls to traders and various business organizations from different parts of the country to sell their products at the fair. Every day the exhibition opened for visitors from 3.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m.

The organizers of the event have hiked the entry fee to Rs 40 from Rs 30 per head.

Kashmiri dry fruit sellers draw crowds

At the exhibition, the Kashmiri Dry Fruit stall drew special attention from visitors like in previous years.

As dry fruits in Hyderabad are mostly imported from California, Kashmiri dry fruit at the Numaish always grabs people’s attention.

The food stalls were also able to attract many visitors at the Numaish.

    History of Numaish in Hyderabad

Numaish-e-Masnuaat-e-Mulki, or Numaish in short, began in 1938 as an event to promote locally-produced goods. It was an idea by a group of graduates from Osmania University.

The seventh Nizam of Hyderabad State, Mir Osman Ali Khan, inaugurated the first ‘Numaish’.

After seeing the response, it was decided to make it an annual event and use the earnings to promote education.

Beginning with just 50 stalls, it has today evolved into one of the biggest industrial exhibitions in the country.

The annual exhibition was not organized thrice

Numaish could not be organized in 1947 and 1948 due to the turmoil in the aftermath of India’s Independence. With Hyderabad acceding to the Indian Union, the event bounced back in 1949.

The exhibition could not be held in 2020 due to Covid-19 situation. This was only the third time in its history that it could not be held.

Last year, the Numaish was suspended a day after it was inaugurated by the state Governor in view of the curbs imposed by the government to check the spread of Covid-19. It was later organized from February 25.

  • ‘No pressure’: Hyderabad’s GVK Group rebuts Rahul’s statement on Adani

‘No pressure’: Hyderabad’s GVK Group rebuts Rahul’s statement on Adani

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Business conglomerate GVK Group on Wednesday categorically said there was no “extraneous pressure” from anyone to sell its stake in Mumbai airport as alleged by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The company’s comments came a day after Gandhi alleged in Lok Sabha that “Mumbai airport, was taken away from GVK using agencies such as the CBI and the ED, and was given to Adani by the Government of India”.

“GVK reiterates that the decision to sell its stakes in Mumbai Airport to Adani, was taken by the management and there was absolutely no question of any extraneous pressure being exerted on us,” GVK Group spokesperson told PTI.

Adani Group, which is currently in the eye of a storm over the recent report by short-seller Hindenburg Research related to its company’s business dealings, took over the management of the Mumbai airport from GVK Group in July 2021.

While explaining the circumstances that led to the sale of the airport, GVK Group Vice Chairman Sanjay Reddy told a TV channel that it was looking to raise funds for the airport business.

Reddy said that at that time, Adani Group founder-chairman Gautam Adani approached him saying he had a lot of interest in the airport and whether GVK Group was willing to do a transaction with him.

“… He (Adani) said that he will assure that we will conclude the entire transaction in one month which was very important for us. So, from that perspective, whatever we did was in the interest of the company and the lenders who we had to repay and therefore, we had to close the transaction with Adani because we didn’t see any light of day with the other investors,” Reddy said.

While leading the Opposition attack over the Adani-Hindenburg issue in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Gandhi alleged that the government tweaked rules in favour of Adani and said the clause that no one without any prior experience would be involved in the development of airports was done away with.

“This rule was changed by the government and Adani was given six airports. After that, India’s most strategic, profitable airport, Mumbai Airport, was taken away from GVK using agencies like the CBI, ED, and was given to Adani by the Government of India,” he alleged.

In July 2021, Adani Enterprises Limited said Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), the flagship holding company of Adani Group’s airport business, will hold nearly 98 per cent stake in GVK Airport Developers Ltd (GVKADL) pursuant to the rights exercised by it as a lender to the company.

AAHL took over the management control of Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL).

GVKADL is the holding company of GVK Airport Holdings Ltd (GVKAHL) which holds 50.50 per cent equity stake in MIAL. The latter holds 74 per cent equity stake in Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd.

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) is undertaking works to restore the lost glory of Laad Bazaar located near Charminar, Hyderabad.

In order to restore the lost glory, many steps are being taken. So far, the façade for the shops at Laad Bazaar has been finalized. It will ensure that all the shops at the famous bangle market will have a uniform design.

After inspecting the market on Friday, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar tweeted that QQSUDA will restore the market within a year.

    Laad Bazaar in Hyderabad

Laad Bazaar, also known as Choodi Bazaar, is the famous bangle market in Hyderabad. It is located on one of the roads that branch out from Charminar.

Most of the shops that are located on this kilometer-long road sell bangles and wedding-related articles.

Laad Bazaar is famous in Hyderabad since the Qutb Shahi period. The market is located near the city’s many famous historical monuments such as Charminar, Makkah Masjid, Chowmahalla Palace, etc.

Khursheed Jah Devdi to be restored

Telangana government which is restoring many historical monuments in Hyderabad has recently announced the restoration of Khursheed Jah Devdi. It is located at Hussaini Alam.

Though the announcement was made in December 2022, the work is yet to begin.

Built by the ancestors of Paigah noble Khursheed Jah Bahadur, the monument is a European-styled architectural palace. Located just a kilometer away from Charminar, the palace is a notified heritage structure.

The palace which now needs to be restored was once decorated with exclusive chandeliers. The garden at the palace was full of flowers.

  • IIT Hyderabad’s Raindrop Research Facility to help precision prediction of rainfall

IIT Hyderabad’s Raindrop Research Facility to help precision prediction of rainfall

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has established a Raindrop Research Facility (RRF) for simulating atmospheric conditions from the clouds to the ground in order to better predict rainfall.

The facility was inaugurated on Friday by V.K. Saraswat, Member, of NITI Aayog.

Accurate rainfall prediction is one of the major challenges in environmental research as rainfall is influenced by several factors and atmospheric conditions. The RRF will offer a more accurate understanding of rainfall which will help understand global climate change better.

Explaining the uniqueness of the facility, Kirti Sahu, lead researcher at RRF and professor in the department of chemical engineering at IITH, said, “One of the key limitations in rainfall modelling is the lack of fundamental knowledge of the microphysical processes like coalescence, breakup and phase change, in the actual atmospheric conditions.

“Using the novel experimental facility developed at IITH, the temperature can be varied from -10-degree C to 40 degrees C and relative humidity can be maintained from zero to the saturation level. Thus, we can mimic the dynamic atmospheric conditions from cloud to ground and estimate the shape and size distributions of raindrops at various altitudes. This information will be used to improve rainfall prediction. This methodology is a far better choice than the other measurement methods in use now.”

The machine learning-based digital holography technique developed at IIT Hyderabad has emerged as a powerful tool for capturing three-dimensional information about raindrops with high spatial resolution. This technique will be beneficial for improving rainfall forecasts when combined with the unique experimental facility.

B.S. Murty, Director, IITH, said, “This facility is expected to provide a lot of information on weather forecasting, particularly on rainfall. It is not only going to be useful for our country, but also to the whole world in predicting rainfall with much better precision.”
