  • How the war in Sudan is separating Hyderabadi families

How the war in Sudan is separating Hyderabadi families

    [ad_1]

Jeddah: The fracturing of families underpins many stories of displacement in Sudan, where fighting has erupted in the capital Khartoum and elsewhere, due to a vicious power struggle within the country’s military leadership.

Some Indians including Hyderabadis tie the knots amidst the blue skies of the Nile delta in the African country. The conflicts and tensions in Sudan are not new for Indians, however, the ongoing conflict that erupted on April 15 is a matter of concern for them, not like before.

When Rafat Unissa married to a Sudanese national in Hyderabad some eight years ago she didn’t even imagine that one day she would return with her four children to her parent’s home back in India.

    MS Education Academy

She is one among some Hyderabadi poverty ridden girls married to Sudanese and settled in African country. Though she is married to a Sudanese national yet she chose to remain as an Indian Citizen. Also, her four children – two sons and two daughters – also Indian nationals.

‘I can’t risk the life of my children in Sudan and decided to return to my home India’, she told this correspondent over the phone from Port Sudan while waiting to be airlifted by Indian Air Force aircraft.

The family of Mohammed Ziauddin of BHEL Ramachandrapuram is in more fractured. Settled in Sudan three decades ago, his two sons married African women. When war erupted they left for neighbouring Eretria with their wives as foreigners their African wives weren’t able to avail Operation Kaveri meant for Indians.

The father decided to return to Hyderabad along with their mother and his Hyderabad employees. He was operating an industrial pipes manufacturing plant family.

In another case, a man from the Lungar House area of Hyderabad (whose identity is withheld) has been living in Sudan for many years. A former resident of Dubai, he settled in Sudan and married a Sudanese woman.

His case is peculiar and more interesting, he is already married in India and his first wife is living in Hyderabad along with the children.

While working in Sudan, he fell in love with a local woman and married her. The Hyderabadi is not ready to depart from her Sudanese wife and return home. Neither can he bring his Sudanese wife to India.

Also, he is apprehensive of his Indian wife in case he brings his Sudanese wife to India, according to his friends.

All these Hyderabadis who are desperate to come to Hyderabad are full of praise for the Indian Government and its Operation Kaveri mission.

Moved by earthquake in Turkey, Hyderabadi girl Khadija raises money for victims; writes heart wrenching poem

    [ad_1]

An eight-year-old girl Khadija Ahmed in Hyderabad has sold her three poems to 10 persons and raised Rs 3000 to donate the money for the earthquake affected people in Turkey.

She was shaken by the news of the killings and damages pouring in from Turkey. She wanted to help the victims and hit upon an idea of her own.

When asked by this Siasat.com correspondent what her meager contribution would do for the victims who have lost lives, homes and everything they had she narrated a story.

“My parents had told me a story. It was about Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). His enemy raised a massive fire as he wanted to throw him into the flames and kill him. There was this little bird that heard about the plans of that enemy and began flying with a drop of water in its beak.  On her way someone asked the bird what would you do with that drop of water. The bird replied that it would pour it on the fire. The onlooker who was surprised with the answer asked what difference that one drop of water would make. When God will ask me what you did to help my prophet I would tell Him that I did not remain a silent spectator. I dropped water to put out the flames.”

Khadija said she has been inspired by this story of the little bird.

Khadija, daughter of Kaleem Ahmed and Sumaiyah Syed, studies at Oakridge International School located in Gachibowli.

She is a grade three student who spends most of her free time in reading, painting and listening to music. Public speaking is another area where she takes interest. Her favourite author is J K Rowling.

    When the Wind brought sorrow,
    Destroying homes and families.

The Wind asked if it would be the families he would borrow,
But the people said, ‘No!’ ‘It can be anything except our people, our fantasies.’

But the Wind laughed wickedly, and said,
“I do not listen to filthy things like you.
“So hurry along, before I destroy your kids in their cosy beds!”
And the people knew, that whatever wind said was always true.

So they did whatever Wind said,
And Wind was to rule the Earth, always in everyone’s and his lifetime.

And sometimes, Wind was so dangerous that people used to be scared covered in their beds,
Some say he might die out of anger in time!

Some say he will die a vain death,
While others say that’s not true.
Some say while he dies he will have no wealth,
But many say he will come in different souls and be YOU!

  • Obit: Remembering Bohini Kamalakar, a true-blue Hyderabadi

Obit: Remembering Bohini Kamalakar, a true-blue Hyderabadi

    [ad_1]

    By Anand Kamalakar

Hyderabad: Bohini Kamalakar was born on March 2 nd 1932 in Gowliguda, in the erstwhile Hyderabad state of the Nizams. Born on the auspicious day of Holi into a small family, with only one sibling, an older sister, his childhood was of meager beginnings. His father held two jobs to keep the family afloat. He was a cashier at the Nizam’s treasure and by night ran a small printing press, where he made cinema tickets for the local movie houses.

Growing up in the Nizam’s Hyderabad state, Kamalakar learned how to read and write Urdu (then the state’s official language) and was a life-long devotee of the language and its exquisite poetry and literature. Hyderabad’s rich history, customs and cuisine, were always a matter of great pride. A Telangana man at his core, Kamalakar never shied away from feeling proud of his earthy upbringing and the culture and grit that it embodied.

The Nihiari Kulcha, Chapala Pulusu, Karachi Bakery bread and biscuits, Biryani and a good Paan defined Kamalakar. Feeding people exquisite Dakhani food was a passion. Bohini Kamalakar attended Vivek Vardhini School and then went to Nizam College.

Kamalakar was a rising artist in his college days. An actor and a singer, he was popular on campus and the songs that he wrote and sang were all a hit and his contemporaries always remembered them with great fondness long past his prime.

He was a regular recording artist at All India Radio and an avid fan of Begum Akhtar, K.L Saigal, Punkaj Mallick, Mukesh and Mohammad Rafi. Shyam Benegal made his directorial debut with a play at Nizam College “The
Bishop’s Candlesticks” and Kamalakar was the lead.

    Nizam College and printing press

While a student at Nizam College, he had dreams of going to Bombay and even abroad. The sudden demise of his father changed his course. He had to take over his father’s printing press as he had a mother and sister to support.
He later completed his MA in Economics, the first in his entire family to get a formal education, ever.

The printing press in Hyderabad, from which he retired, was called ‘Anand Power Press’. It was one of the first printing presses in Hyderabad to run on electricity. He grew the press into a well-known small enterprise acquiring machines from abroad. A successful business allowed him to purchase the building from his landlord and buy
a piece a land in the new part of the expanding city where he started his family life with his wife Maya.

Bohini Kamalakar broke ground on a new house in Adarshnagar, and was a pioneer in starting the colony. Soon they had three children, Gita, Jaya and Anand.

Wedding cards, bill books, small magazines and stationery were the main items that were printed in his letterpress. As a small entrepreneur he became the sole printer for ICRISAT and Ford Foundation, which was a turning point.
Even though being a printer defined his professional life he did not given up on his artistic interests. If there were three things Kamalakar was passionate about, they were movies, music and Hyderabadi cuisine.

From Satyajit Ray, Akira Kurasawa, Frederico Fellini, Vittorio De Sica, John Ford, William Wyler, to Steven Spielberg he had a thirst and taste for good cinema. Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt were his favorite Indian filmmakers. He was an avid listener of Hindustani Classical Music, and was a founding member of Surmandal, an organization that invited famous musicians to perform in Hyderabad.

His love for old Hindi music was bottomless. His mornings began with K.L Saigal on Vividh Bharati and ended with Binaca Geetmala. His record collection was diverse from Johann Strauss to Lata Mangeshkar. His house was always alive with music and an appreciation for everything artistic.

Kamalakar became a Free Mason later in his life, a membership of which he deeply cherished. He also had a passion for construction. He helped many friends build houses. Helping those in need came to him naturally. He financed the education of his employee’s children, opened bank accounts for them and gave generous loans and in
return received undying support from everyone from his auto driver on up.

Kamalakar left us on January 14, 2023. He is survived and loved by his wife Maya, daughter Gita, son Anand, daughter-in-law Sudha, grandchildren Sonali, Kundun and Aman and his devoted caregiver Durgamma.

(The author is one of Bohini Kamalakar’s children).
