Hyderabad Cricket has become a banana republic; no sensibility, no direction except losing matches

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad cricket is in a pitiable state. It has recently recorded its worst ever performance in the Ranji Trophy Championship. In the past Hyderabad used to be known for it’s daredevilry. Its batsmen never hesitated to play their shots. The bowlers used to be very crafty – especially the spinners who were among the best in India. They could break the spine of the strongest batting line ups. Hyderabad also used to be a rival that the big guns took very seriously.

Now Hyderabad has declined to unprecedented depths in the Ranji trophy. The six defeats are testimony to the team’s abject failure. Hyderabad finished with just one point from seven matches and was demoted to the Plate group for the next season. This is the third time that Hyderabad has faced this ignominy.

Those who love Hyderabad cricket passionately are in despair. How long will this torture go on? How many defeats and humiliations will it take to shake the HCA administration out of its slumber?

The famous basketball coach of the USA, John Robert Wooden once said something that applies very aptly to Hyderabad’s present condition. He said: “Failure against rivals is not fatal. But failure to change one’s methods can be fatal.” Meaning, the best of teams may fail from time to time. But as long as they learn from that failure and change their methods, they are safe. Success will come one day. But in Hyderabad, no lesson has been learnt from failures and nothing has changed.

Year after year we see the same story being repeated. The internal squabbling between administrators continues endlessly. The local league cricket is not being conducted in a systematic and progressive manner. Recently the media exposed how the increase in the number of teams has led to a further increase in malpractices.

A former well experienced state player who is now a top official in one of the cricket clubs told this correspondent that in 2019-2020 the number of teams in the A-1 Division 3-Day league was suddenly increased from 18 to 35 without any rhyme or reason. Now the number has risen further.

“This has brought down the standard at the topmost level of the Hyderabad leagues. Because players can now score a century or take five wickets against obscure rivals and thereby stake a claim for a place in the state side. In the season of 2021-2022 the same story was repeated. And this season has started badly again. Things are going wrong because rules are being flouted regularly with utter impunity,” he pointed out.

“When so many teams are playing, obviously there is a lack of top quality grounds. What is the standard of the pitches and outfields on which league matches are played? Does anybody pay any attention to these important aspects of the game? On poorly maintained grounds, players cannot show their skill. There is enough money in the game to improve infrastructure. But it is not being done. If the conduct of league tournaments does not improve, it logically follows that there will be no improvement in Hyderabad cricket,” he lamented.

Another official pointed out that many questionable decisions were made in Hyderabad’s participation in domestic tournaments. Many choices were haphazard and irrational. For the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournament, seven different opening pairs were tried out. Eleven new players made their debut. Players with immense potential were overlooked and players with little experience and poor scores were selected. Players who succeeded in one match found themselves dropped for the next match. There was not even a semblance of stability in the side. The coaching staff consisted of only one head coach without any assistant coach or fielding coach.

As the saying goes in all sports, the grassroots level is where the talent takes root. That organisation which can improve cricket at the lowest level will rise to great heights at the topmost level. But in Hyderabad nobody seems to care. The HCA seems to have developed a skin so thick that the worst humiliation cannot bring about a sense of shame.

Hyderabad: Airport Metro works under ‘fine-tune’

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In order to fine-tune the Airport Metro alignment and to examine different options for ideal station locations, Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) MD NVS Reddy inspected a 10 km stretch between Narsingi underpass (My Home Avatar junction) to Rajendranagar hillock on Sunday.

Walking the entire length of about 10 km along with his senior engineers, he examined every aspect of the alignment and gave directions, a press note said.

He stated that the Airport Metro stations should be situated closer to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) road underpasses in order to give passengers arriving from various roads and communities where extensive development is occurring easy access.

In order to facilitate the construction of a few additional stations to serve the high-rise commercial and residential buildings under construction in the area of the corridor, Reddy also requested that the engineers design the Metro viaduct without curves and gradients at a few designated locations.

In order to ensure the success of Airport Metro from the very beginning of operations, he instructed officials that skywalks and other pedestrian amenities must be considered a crucial component of station planning.

Not every building should be a museum: Hyderabad Lit Fest panel

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Every building cannot be a museum and old or heritage structures can be used for new purposes, said award winning architect Anuradha Naik. She pointed out that demolishing old structures and constructing something new takes a lot of energy (hinting that it could be perhaps be avoided with regard to heritage structures).

“Not every old building should be a museum. My question is what are we going to put in it? The oldest hospital is London is 1000 yes old. So why can’t we use old structures for new uses? Our tendency to say all old buildings should be got culture is wrong,” said Naik, while speaking at a panel discussion on ‘Reviving Heritage’ at the Hyderabad Literary Festival (HLF) here on Sunday.

Naik, who has worked on various projects including the Domakonda fort in Telangana (which recently won a UNESCO award for its restoration work), said “In most Scandinavian countries you have to reuse buildings. Osmania hospital has everything (with regard to the recent controversy about the structure, when there were calls to demolish it. The Telangana government eventually decided against it).”

Architect B. Sarath Chandra from Heritage Matters, whose team worked on the restoration of the historic British Residency building (which was inaugurated earlier this month), also said said they are now trying to “institutionalise” the maintenance of such buildings. “How does one run a museum? Can a College history department also be involved? How long will donors continue funding?,” he asked.

Chandra also said the next edition of the HLF can also be held at the British Residency itself, given its grandeur. The panel was moderated by Hyderabad based journalist Serish Nanisetti. The British Residency (1798-1804) ʼ was built after the Nizams of Hyderabad and the British East India Company signed the Treaty of Subsidiary Alliance in 1798.

  • Owaisi’s AIMIM looks invincible in its old Hyderabad strongholds

Owaisi’s AIMIM looks invincible in its old Hyderabad strongholds

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) looks to continue its sway in the seven Assembly seats it currently holds in the Telangana Assembly.

Going by the past record and the voting, the party appears to be invincible in the Muslim-majority constituencies covering the old city of Hyderabad.

Like in the past, AIMIM began its campaign ahead of others. For the last few days, party President Asaduddin Owaisi has been addressing public meetings with the title ‘Jalsa-e-Halat-e-Hazera’ or meeting on current affairs to build the tempo.

He appealed to the people to remain united and protect the political platform so that the AIMIM continued to raise their voice in the legislature and fight to resolve their problems.

Owaisi is confident that the BJP will never be able to come to power in Telangana. “Our Hindu brothers from the Dalit community and backward classes want peace and communal harmony to prevail in Telangana,” he said while addressing one such meeting.

Such has been the domination of the AIMIM in Hyderabad politics for over four decades that its stronghold remained immune to the political waves and change of guard in the state.

It’s often said that all political waves stop at Nayapul, one of the bridges across the Musi river which connects old Hyderabad to the rest of the city.

No matter which party came to power in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh, the support base of Owaisi’s party remained intact.

There has been no change after Telangana was carved out as a separate state in 2014. Despite the reservations the Asaduddin Owaisi-led party had over the division of Andhra Pradesh, the party adapted itself to the new political scenario dominated by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which recently rechristened itself as Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

While maintaining its firm grip over the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency and the seven Muslim majority Assembly segments in the city, the AIMIM backed the TRS in the rest of the state in both the 2014 and 2019 elections.

This friendship and the secular image of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao helped the TRS in securing the support of the Muslims, who constitute about 12 per cent of the state’s 4 crore population.

With a huge concentration of Muslim voters in state capital Hyderabad and some other districts, they are in a position to tilt the balance in nearly half of the 119 Assembly constituencies.

Muslim voters are believed to be between 35 and 60 per cent in 10 constituencies in Hyderabad and anywhere between 10 to 40 per cent in 50 other constituencies spread across the rest of the state.

Except the eight Assembly constituencies where AIMIM candidates were in the fray, the party backed TRS in all the remaining constituencies.

While the AIMIM’s political opponents accuse the party of pursuing communal politics, KCR on many occasions defended his friend and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi. He lauded the AIMIM chief for fighting for the Constitutional rights of Muslims in a democratic manner.

The BJP, which is going aggressive to capture power in Telangana, has been targeting KCR for his friendship with Owaisi and accusing the TRS leader of pursuing the politics of appeasement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah and other central leaders of the BJP have slammed KCR for appeasement. Digging up the past, the state leadership of the saffron party has been launching bitter attacks on the AIMIM, calling it a party of ‘razakars’.

‘Razakars’ were the volunteers or supporters of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), the party which backed the Nizam who wanted to keep Hyderabad State independent after India gained independence in 1947.

Thirteen months after India’s independence, Hyderabad State acceded to the Indian Union following India’s military action codenamed ‘Operation Polo’.

The MIM was founded in 1927 to promote the socio-economic and educational development of Muslims. After ‘Operation Polo’ hastened the accession of Hyderabad State to the Indian Union in 1948, the MIM was banned.

However, in 1958 it was revived with a new constitution by Moulana Abdul Wahid Owaisi, grandfather of Asaduddin Owaisi. Abdul Wahid Owaisi, a lawyer, converted it into a political party to fight for the rights of the minorities as enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

“Razakars have gone. Those who love the country remained here,” says Asaduddin Owaisi in response to the BJP’s taunt of ‘Razakars’.

He dismisses allegations of pursuing communal politics and maintains that the AIMIM believes in the Indian Constitution and has been fighting for the Constitutional rights of the minorities, Dalits and others.

The AIMIM made its electoral debut in 1959, winning two municipal by-elections in Hyderabad. In 1960, it emerged as the main opposition party in Hyderabad.

Abdul Wahed Owaisi’s son Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi was among the party leaders elected to the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH).

The party underwent an image makeover in the 1980s when Salahuddin Owaisi made three Hindu corporators of the party the mayors of Hyderabad. Those were the days when Hyderabad used to witness frequent communal tension.

From municipal wards in the old city of Hyderabad to two Lok Sabha seats in 2019, the AIMIM has come a long way in its six-decade-long journey in independent India.

More than three decades after first winning the Hyderabad seat, the party expanded itself in a true sense in 2019 by wresting the Aurangabad seat in Maharashtra from the Shiv Sena.

A party confined to the old city of Hyderabad till a few years ago, the AIMIM was ridiculed by its rivals for calling itself an all India party.

The party now has 10 MLAs — seven in Telangana, two in Maharashtra and one in Bihar. Its tally of MLAs was 14 but four MLAs in Bihar recently switched loyalties to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

While continuing its efforts to expand to various states, the AIMIM is treading cautiously to check the BJP’s surge in Telangana.

In a tactical move aimed at stopping the BJP from politically exploiting emotive issues like September 17, the AIMIM for the first time in its history celebrated the day last year as national integration day.

It was on September 17, 1948 that Hyderabad State was merged with the Indian Union. The AIMIM always opposed celebrating the day on the ground that there is only one independence day for the entire country.

The BJP had been targeting the TRS for not officially celebrating Telangana Liberation Day’ due to pressure from Owaisi.

Hyderabad: Mir Alam Tank’s cable bridge plan comes to standstill

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) announced a plan to construct the city’s second cable bridge at Mir Alam Tank in the old city in December 2021. Several announcements were made by the Municipal Administration Department in this regard and it was claimed that with the construction of the second cable bridge in the city of Hyderabad, tourism activities will be increased.

The department had announced the commencement of construction work of the cable bridge at a cost of Rs 220 crore, but since then there has been no progress in this project. It is being said that unless the budget for these works is released, steps to start development works are not possible.

Ten months after the HMDA sought a detailed report for the construction of the cable bridge at Mir Alam Tank, experts handed over it and the authority announced to approve the project, however, the inauguration ceremony of the project was not held so far.

The construction of the cable bridge at Mir Alam Tank will not only record an increase in tourism activities but will also provide a lot of facilities to the people of the surrounding areas. The 2.5 km cable bridge will also provide a lot of relief to pedestrians.
