Vergne tops Hyderabad E-Prix, Mahindra complete homecoming with points finish

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The seasoned Jean Eric Vergne of DS Penske won an action-packed Hyderabad E-Prix here on Saturday, marking a successful return of a high-profile motorsport event in India.

The 33-lap electric race had thrills both on and off the track.

The organisers raced against time to get the Hyderabad Street Circuit ready for Formula E’s debut in India but in the end, they pulled off the event amid a lot of fanfare.

Vergne held off a strong challenge from Envison Racing’s Nick Cassidy to cross the chequered flag in the first place despite having less than 0.5 percent energy left in the car.

Antonio Felix Da Costa of Porsche gained from a 17-second penalty handed out to Sebastian Buemi for ‘over power’ to secure the final spot on the podium.

Mahindra Racing, in their first home race, recovered from an ordinary qualifying session earlier in the day to seal a points finish via Oliver Rowland.
Rowland finished sixth from 10th on the grid while di Grassi came 14th from 17th on the grid. Loss of energy in the final moments of the race cost Mahindra a double points finish.

Jake Hughes’ crash on lap on Lap 23 brought out the safety car, contributing to a thrilling finish.

Mitch Evans of Jaguar Racing bagged the pole position but a collision with his teammate Sam Bird on Lap 13 effectively endws the race for the Tata Group-owned team.

“So happy for the team. It has been a very difficult three races and I could not be more proud of my team because we never gave up. We have a good car, may be not best at the moment but we never give up and keep working hard,” said race winner Vergne.

A sizeable crowd turned up to watch the electric cars vrooming around the heart of the city, covering Hussain Sagar Lake, NTR Gardens and NTR Park.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem made a statement by turning up for the first world championship status race in India in 10 years.

The other special guests included the great Sachin Tendulkar, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.

It was not a surprise to see Tendulkar in the pit-lane as he was also in attendance in the first ever Formula 1 race in India back in 2011. His love for motor racing is well documented.

Renewable energy major Greenko organised the event with the support of Telangana government.

In the qualifying held before the race, Evans saw off Maximilian Guenther (Maserati MSG Racing) and Buemi (Envision Racing), and topped Group A to fire him into the Final.

Vergne made it through after thinking he was all done in the Quarters when Jaguar’s Sam Bird beat him on-track.

Track limits came into it in a big way, though, and the Brit had his time removed, much to his frustration, as did Rene Rast (McLaren) and Edo Mortara (Maserati MSG Racing) in the fourth Quarter-final.

All that meant the Frenchman was promoted to the final, and ultimately second on the grid – beaten by the smallest deficit this season.

  • Hyderabad: 4,872 units of residential properties registered in January

Hyderabad: 4,872 units of residential properties registered in January

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In the latest assessment, Knight Frank India noted that Hyderabad recorded registrations of 4,872 units of residential properties in January 2023 while the total value of properties registered in month stood at Rs 2,494 crore. There has been a moderation in registration of home sales in January to the tune of 35% YoY while collections from registration have reduced for January by 26% year on year. The Hyderabad residential market includes four districts namely Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy and Sangareddy.

The Hyderabad residential market has in the past demonstrated irregular trends with a few months in each year recording reduced activities. This has been for two main reasons firstly, the buyer behaviour is unpredictable due to its price sensitive characteristics. Thus, buyers flock the market when they are presented with lucrative deals, therefore months coinciding with key events like salary revisions, festive seasons that bring in rebates etc. see higher volume of activities. Secondly, sales of homes are not registered at the time of purchase, therefore if the majority sales in a month happens in under construction properties with longer lead time to delivery, the cumulative volume of registrations tend to be lower that month. The city has also seen a rise in average prices in the last few quarters which may has also contributed to the slowdown in overall sales momentum.

Registrations in residential units in the price band of INR 2.5 – 5 Mn (INR 25 – 50 lakhs) remained highest constituting 54% of the total registrations in January 2023, which is an increase from a share of 39% in January 2022. Demand in the less than INR 2.5 mn (INR 25 Lakhs) ticket-size weakened with its share constituting 18% compared to 36% a year ago. Greater demand for larger ticket size homes remained evident as the cumulative share of sales registrations for properties with ticket-sizes of INR 5 Mn and above (> INR 50 lakhs) increased to 28% in January 2023 from 25% in January 2022.

In January 2023, the share of registrations in unit category of properties sized 500 – 1000 square feet increased to 17% compared to 15% observed in January 2022 while share of properties sized 1,000-2,000 square feet remained highest with a total share of 71% in January 2023, slightly lower than 72% witnessed in January 2022.

At district level, the study shows that home sales registrations in the Medchal-Malkajgiri district was recorded at 41% followed by Rangareddy district at 35%. The share of Hyderabad district in total registrations was recorded at 15% in January 2023.

The weighted average prices of transacted residential properties have increased by 16% YoY in January 2023. Sangareddy district saw the steepest rise of 48% YoY in January 2023 indicating more higher value homes were sold in this location during this period. Price growth in the Hyderabad market has been strong in recent times.

  • Accused in Vivekananda Reddy murder shifted to Hyderabad Jail

Accused in Vivekananda Reddy murder shifted to Hyderabad Jail

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Three of the accused in the sensational murder case of former Andhra Pradesh minister Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy were shifted to Chanchalguda Jail here on Friday after they were produced before the CBI Special Court, which adjourned the hearing to March 10.

Amid tight security, Sunil Yadav, Umashankar Reddy and Devireddy Shivshankar Reddy were shifted to Chanchalguda Jail after the court extended their judicial custody.

Earlier, they were brought from Kadapa Jail to Hyderabad and produced before the CBI Court at Nampally Court Complex.

Erra Gangi Reddy, who is on bail and driver Dastagiri, who has turned an approver, also appeared in the court.

This was the first time after the Supreme Court transferred the case from Kadapa to Hyderabad that the accused appeared in the court here.

Shivshankar Reddy’s counsel brought to the notice of the court that he has to appear in a court in Kadapa in connection with another case. The judge asked him to file a petition for the permission.

Vivekananda Reddy, paternal uncle of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, was found murdered mysteriously at his residence at Pulivendula in Kadapa district on March 15, 2019.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP, brother of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him. He was murdered hours before he was to launch YSR Congress Party’s election campaign in Kadapa.

Though three Special Investigation Teams (SITs) conducted the probe, they failed to solve the mystery.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Sunitha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

The CBI filed a chargesheet in the murder case on October 26, 2021 and followed it up with a supplementary charge sheet on January 31, 2022

In November last year, the Supreme Court transferred to a CBI court in Hyderabad the trial and probe into the larger conspiracy behind the murder. The apex court observed that doubts raised by Sunitha Reddy about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh were reasonable.

Stepping up the pace of investigation, the CBI on January 28 questioned Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy, more than four-and-a-half hours.

Avinash Reddy is nephew of Vivekananda Reddy and cousin of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Amid dissent, Cafe Coffee Day opens at University of Hyderabad

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) outlet was opened on February 8, at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) campus amid strong dissent by student unions.

The act of opening a new CCD branch displayed “absolute apathy towards the marginalised students of the university,” said the Students’ Federation of India (SFI).

The letter expressed that an expensive cafe would divide the students into those who can afford the pricey coffees and those who cannot, bringing about class divides among the students. The SFI called this a condemnable and discriminatory measure on the administrations’ part.

We have already informed them not to open corporate branches in the campus, and submitted a letter to the Registrar of the University on February 9 regarding the same, said UoH SFI secretary, Siva Durga Rao while speaking to Siasat.com.

Siva has said that the Basic Amenities Committee takes all decisions regarding eateries and the committee provided green signal for the opening of the outlet on February 8 even though the SFI and other student unions have asked the administration to cancel this.

The letter also mentions that many canteens were closed during the lockdown and have not been reopened yet. Despite the pressure from Student Union the canteens near the North Ladies Hostel, F-Hostel and GOPS have remained closed since the beginning of the pandemic.

SFI has said that the CCD outlet has to be closed down and the administration must focus on reopening canteens that would be affordable for all students to ensure inclusivity.

Hyderabad: Crater develops after road caves at MBGS-Chaderghat road

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A portion of MGBS-Chaderghat main road caved in creating a deep crater on Friday evening. Though the size of the crater was around 5 feet in diameter and 20 feet deep, no one was injured.

Hyderabad traffic police barricaded the road on both sides immediately to keep people away from the danger zone.

The officials from Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Works and Sewerage Corporation (HMW&SB) engineers rushed to the spot and took up repair works. “We are ascertaining the reason for the formation of a crater on the road, however we have taken all the precautions by deploying an emergency team on the site” said Sheila Rani General Manager south.

Since the city is facing heavy traffic snarls, the concerned officials planned to repair the road during the night time. MGBS-Chaderghat main road is one of the busiest roads in the city.

The AIMIM Legislator Ahmed Balala along with the civic authorities too visited the site and inspected the crater. He instructed the officials to restore the road soon.

  • Formula E in Hyderabad: Confetti canons instead of Champagne for podium celebrations

Formula E in Hyderabad: Confetti canons instead of Champagne for podium celebrations

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The podium finishers of the inaugural Formula E race in India on Saturday will not get to ‘pop the champagne’, a decades-old tradition in motorsport, as part of the victory celebrations.

Instead, they will have to make do with confetti cannons.

Keeping the ‘local customs’ in mind, all stakeholders of the Hyderabad race promoters Greenko, Telangana government, Formula E and the series champagne sponsor Moet & Chandon have decided to not use the bubbly on the podium, PTI has learnt.

The use of champagne on the podium dates back to the 1950s and 1960s.

Spraying the sparkling wine on the podium has become synonymous with the widely followed Formula 1.

Five-time Formula 1 champion Juan Manuel Fangio was awarded a bottle of Moet & Chandon at the 1950 French Grand Prix and he opened it on the podium.

However, champagne was sprayed for the first time in 1966 when Jo Siffert would “accidentally” pop the cork on the crowd to celebrate his win in the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans. The rest, as they, is history.

The last of Sebastian Vettel’s four world titles was sealed with a win in the 2013 Formula 1 Indian Grand Prix in Greater Noida and not only he celebrated with champagne on the podium, he even took the big bottle with himself to the customary media interaction post the race.

Replacing the champagne with a non-alcoholic beverage is usually seen in races organised in the Arab world including Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain.

Reigning F1 world champion Max Verstappen had not taken part in the victory celebrations in Saudi Arabia during the epic 2021 season where his title fight went down to the last lap of the last race in Abu Dhabi.

He had told Sky Sports that he left because “it wasn’t fun” as there was no champagne on the podium.

Formula E also respects the local tradition and customs too and that was the reason why the previous round in Saudi Arabia had confetti canons for celebration instead of champagne. The same was decided for the inaugural Formula E race in Muslim majority Indonesia last year.

Alcohol advertising is banned in India but barring a few states, it is sold in massive quantities around the country.

Back in 2020, it was reported that five South Indian states — Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala — consumed half of India’s total liquor consumption. The total consumption of alcoholic beverages in the country was 5 billion litres.

Drivers raise safety concerns at Turn 3

Ahead of the opening practice session of the Hyderabad E-Prix, drivers including Jean Eric Vergne, Jake Dennis and Andre Lotterer raised safety concerns at Turn 3 of the 2.83 km long street circuit. The track runs around the Hussain Sagar Lake, NTR Park and NTR Garderns, covering the necklace road.

“There is not enough run off area at turn 3. We will be coming at very high speeds through that turn and if we lost the brakes, you have nothing, you just have the wall (without barriers),” said Vergne, who is a two-time Formula E champion and a former Formula 1 driver.

However, Vergne and most other drivers in the field praised the layout of the track. At the shakedown, the track wore a very dusty look as cars zoomed around.

Passport applicants wait for hours at PSKs in Hyderabad

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Due to the heavy rush, passport applicants are not only waiting for more than a month to get appointments but also standing for hours for their turns at PSKs in Hyderabad.

At PSKs, Hyderabad residents especially women are facing difficulties as many of them are not even finding chairs to sit down leaving them with no option but to stand waiting for hours for their token numbers.

Confusion over token numbers at PSKs in Hyderabad

At the PSKs in Hyderabad, passport applicants have to pass through three stages viz., A, B, and C.

Though applicants hardly wait for their turn at Stage A, they usually have to wait for hours for their turns at stages B and C.

‘Some of the applicants at the center were confused over the token numbers as they were not appearing in order’, he added.

Though, attempts are being made to reduce the wait time by arranging special passport drives on Saturdays, the wait time for appointment dates at all PSKs in Hyderabad has not come down.

  • What is Formula E? All you need to know ahead of race in Hyderabad

What is Formula E? All you need to know ahead of race in Hyderabad

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Big-ticket motorsport action returns to India after a decade with Hyderabad becoming the 30th location to host a Formula E race.

Here is all you need to know about the all-electric racing series ahead of its first race in India on Saturday.

How different is it from Formula 1?

Formula E is an electric equivalent of the widely followed Formula 1 which was staged in India from 2011 to 2013. However, other than the Formula’ prefix, there is no similarity between the two FIA world championship status events.

The hybrid turbo-charged engines in Formula 1 are the epitome of performance while the battery-powered Formula E machines promote sustainability and a greener world.

Formula E is racing with a purpose but its cars have rapidly evolved over the last eight seasons and Gen3 technology has been introduced this season. As the series claims, Gen3 is the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient car in its history.

It has a top speed of 320 kmph, a 100kmph faster than the first generation cars used from 2014-2017. The Gen2 cars were run from 2018-2022 and they could touch speeds over 280kmph.

Since most of the Formula E races are held on the twisty street circuits around the world with not so long straights, top speeds are not reached often.

40 percent of energy produced while braking

In the first season, the batteries could only produce 200kw of power requiring the drivers to swap cars midway into the race. The introduction of the more powerful Gen2 cars meant the cars could last the full race distance.

The power output has been increased to 350kw in the Gen3 cars and with regeneration, it could go up to 600kw.

More than 40 percent of the energy will come from regenerative braking, an increase of 25 percent over Gen2 machines. The series has a new tyre supplier in
Hankook but drivers are not fully satisfied with its performance. The latest cars are also 60kg lighter than the previous generation and weigh at 840kg.

    Homecoming for Mahindra Racing

Mahindra Racing, which has been with Formula E since its inception, will finally get to experience the thrill of a home race after eight seasons.

The other manufacturers in the championship include Nissan, Porsche, Tata owned Jaguar. McLaren and Maserati are the new entrants. After winning the title last season, Mercedes withdrew from the championship. Audi and BMW too are no longer part of the championship.

After a podium in the opening race of the season in Mexico, Mahindra will be hoping for an encore.

    The racing format

To ensure minimum disruption in public life, most of the action is packed in one day with FP2, qualifying and race scheduled on Saturday.

Formula E introduced a new qualifying format last season calling it “Duels” with drivers taking on each other in quarterfinals, semifinals and finals after qualifying from group stage.

The winning driver of the final duel takes Pole Position, while the runner-up lines up second. The semi-finalists will line up third and fourth, the quarter-finalists between fifth and eighth – according to their laptimes.

    The Hyderabad track

The 2.83km track set up in the heart of the city showcases the best of what Hyderabad has to offer. The cars will vroom around the Hussain Sagar Lake, NTR Gardens, NTR Park and Prasads’ Imax, covering the necklace road.

Hyderabad will be round four of the championship. Saudia Arabia hosted two races in January after the season opener in Mexico.

Formula E sees India as a huge market and hopes to have a long future in the country.

“It took us too long to get to India. We will be here until they want us,” Formula E co-founder Alberto Longo had said after marking the 100-day countdown to the race.

Renewable energy major Greenko is the local promoter of the race alongside Telangana government.
