    18 parties to participate in hunger strike in Delhi tomorrow: K Kavitha

    Delhi: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC and Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter K Kavitha on Thursday said that a hunger strike will be held in the national capital on March 10 and that 18 political parties have said that they will participate in the protest launched to seek the introduction of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the current session of Parliament.

    The BRS leader also said that she will face Enforcement Directorate as she has not done anything wrong.

    Addressing a press conference here Kavitha, who received summons from the Enforcement Directorate for questioning in the Delhi excise police case said that if a woman has to be interrogated by a central agency, then as per law, she has a “fundamental right” to be questioned at her home.

    “We released a poster on March 2 about the hunger strike in Delhi over the Women’s Reservation Bill. 18 parties confirmed their participation…ED summoned me on March 9. I requested for March 16 but don’t know what haste they’re in, so I agreed for March 11.”

    “When an agency wants to interrogate a woman, she has a fundamental right that it be done at her home,” she stated.

    “So, I requested ED that they can come to my house on 11th March to investigate but they said that I will have to come to them,” the BRS leader said.

    Kavitha arrived in Delhi today and said that she will be appearing before the Enforcement Directorate on March 11.

    In a series of tweets, BRS MLS had hit out, alleging that certain political motives have been masquerading in the name of investigation.

    “As a law-abiding citizen, I’ll fully cooperate with investigating agencies. I will appear at your good offices on March 11,” she had said in a statement.

    “…I have been summoned by ED to appear on March 9th in Delhi. However, due to the Dharna and prefixed appointments, I’ll see legal opinions on the date of attending it,” BRS MLC K Kavitha had stated.

    “I fail to understand as to why I have been summoned at such short notice. It seems that certain political motives have been masquerading in the name of investigation. I categorically say that I have nothing to do with the present investigation,” she had said in a subsequent tweet.

    “Being a social worker and having prior commitments, I had already planned my schedule for the upcoming week & the abrupt rejection of my request seems to be motivated by reasons best known to you, which demonstrates that it is nothing but political victimisation,” she had tweeted.

    On March 8, the BRS came down heavily on the Centre after the ED summoned Kavitha in connection with its ongoing probe of the Delhi excise policy case, saying that the central probe agencies have become an extended arm of the BJP.

    Referring to the summons as “politically motivated”, BRS leader Ravula Sridhar Reddy had said that except ED and BJP, nobody really understands the case registered in connection with the new-withdrawn new Delhi excise policy.

    Jaipur: The deadlock between the Rajasthan government and four widows of Pulwama martyrs turned murkier on Wednesday with one of them, Manju Jat, writing to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot alleging that the police beat her up, stripped her clothes and even pricked her with a pin.

    Manju, the wife of Pulwama martyr Rohitash Lamba, alleged that the police threw her as if she was a gunny bag when she was going to meet the Chief Minister.

    “Unable to bear the torurtue by the police, I am on an infinite hunger strike since March 4 and the Chief Minister will be responsible if something happens to me,” she said.

    Meanwhile, Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra has also written to Gehlot, asking him to look into the matter. Mishra said that the four war widows have sent a letter to him seeking permission for euthanasia, as he urged the Chief Minister to ensure that the right action is taken.

    Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has shared a video of CRPF jawan Rohitash Lamba’s widow Manju, saying that Gehlot should stop this ‘dictator-like’ behaviour.

    Referring to Manju’s allegations of police brutality, Shekhawat said that instead of taking the necessary action, the Chief Minister is issuing statements on Twitter to blame her.

    “The government should break the fast of the widows of Pulwama martyrs. Gehlot ji, this dictatorship will not work,” Shekhawat said.

    Meanwhile, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena, who is also protesting with the widows, said, “On Tuesday, two ministers — Pratap Singh Khachariawas and Shankuntala Rawat — came to meet the protesting women.

    Both listened to their demands and assured to solve the issue. It was expected that there would be an announcement from the state government on Wednesday accepting their demands, but nothing happened.

    Instead, the Chief Minister is raising questions over the demands of these widows despite two of his own ministers assuring to solve the matter.”

    New Delhi: Several teachers of Delhi University sat on a 12-hour hunger strike over delay in forming governing bodies in 28 colleges funded by the Arvind Kejriwal government.

    The strike called by the AAP teachers wing — Academics for Action & Development Delhi Teachers Association (AADTA) — started at around 7 am at Arts Faculty.

    They also demanded the absorption of ad hoc and temporary teachers working in various Delhi University colleges.

    Several members of the Executive Council, Academic Council and Finance Committee of the varsity participated in the strike. Some former members and chairpersons of the governing bodies (GB) were also part of the demonstration, AADTA said in a statement.

    “The large scale participation shows the anger of teaching community over the way the university administration has politicised the GB formation in these colleges and the recruitment process in a narrow partisan manner,” it said.

    Last month, the Delhi government had sent the list of its nominees for the Governing Bodies formation to the university and during the Executive Council meeting on February 3, the list was not brought for approval, the statement said.

    When Executive Council members Seema Das and R S Pawar took up the matter in the meeting, DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh said there were some technical problems, the AADTA claimed.

    “In mid-February, the university administration arbitrarily sent three GB nominees to Bharati College, violating the varsity’s Statute 30(1) and EC Resolution 51 (2012). When the policy of university administration is to continue with the massive displacements to the tune of 70 per cent ad hoc and temporary teachers, it is making all efforts to evade accountability to the elected government,” the AADTA said in the statement.

    Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC and Bharat Jagruthi founder K Kavitha on Thursday announced a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, Delhi on March 10 for Women’s Reservation Bill.

    Speaking to the media she said, “Parliament sessions will start from March 13 and we want the Union government to bring the Women’s Reservation Bill in these sessions”.

    She said that the hunger strike will be held on March 10 instead of March 8, International Women’s Day due to the Holi festival. She invited all the parties to extend their support and join Bharat Jagruthi in the hunger strike.

    She alleged that the Modi government has not kept the promise of bringing the Women’s Reservation Bill twice already.

    “Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, when they came into rule in 2014, said that reservations will be created for women. They said that same thing in 2019, as well. They did not keep up their promises,” she stated.

    Images of a jailed Iranian doctor and human rights activist have circulated on social media platforms after he declared a hunger strike in support of the ongoing anti-hijab protests since the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.

    53-year-old Farhad Meysami, who has been imprisoned since 2018 for supporting activists who rejected the policy of imposing the headscarf.

    The activist was charged with spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic, gathering and colluding to commit crimes against national security, and insulting sanctities.

    Farhad began his hunger strike on October 7, 2022, in protest of the government’s crackdown on protesters.

    In images, which spread on social media, sparked outrage and warnings that he was in danger of death. 

    His lawyer wrote on Twitter that he had lost 52 kilograms of weight as a result of the hunger strike.

    “My client Farhad Meysami’s life is in danger He has started a hunger strike to protest the recent killings in the streets and government killings. According to the announcement of the prison health department, his weight has decreased to 52 kilos and he has been beaten due to his resistance to being transferred to the prison for dangerous prisoners,” tweeted lawyer Mohammad Moghimi. “

    In a letter published by the BBC Persian service, Meysami announced three demands— an end to executions, the release of political and civilian prisoners, and an end to forced headscarf harassment.

    Amnesty International called on the Iranian authorities to release Meysami without conditions.

    “Harrowing photos of Dr Farhad Meysami, a brave hunger-striking advocate for women’s rights, in prison,” Robert Malley, the US special envoy for Iran, wrote on Twitter.

    Tweeters posted a video showing the doctor before his arrest, and he appeared to be in good health.

    Protests in Iran continues

    Iran has been witnessing protests since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, on September 16, after she was arrested in Tehran by the morality police on suspicion of not respecting the country’s dress code.

    The demonstrations involved people from all walks of life and different sects in Iran after Amini’s killing.

    Iranian women are at the fore in the demonstrations, in which many young people participate, to chants of “Woman life freedom” and “Death to the dictator.”

    The protests represent one of the country’s boldest challenges since the 1979 revolution.

    Despite the widespread condemnation of the suppression of the popular protests in Iran, the torrent of arrests carried out by the Iranian regime, its issuance of harsh sentences against protestors, and reports of hunger strikes and torture of prisoners in separate parts of the country, continues.

    The regime continued to pressure other demonstrators and activists of the popular uprising through arrests, harsh sentences, and bans.

    The Human Rights Activists News Agency (Hrana) announced that 527 protesters had been killed in the unrest as of Saturday, February 4, including 71 children.

    At least 19,623 people, including 718 students, were arrested in those protests that took place in 164 cities and towns and 144 universities.

    Tehran: Iranian award-winning director, Jafar Panahi, who has been imprisoned in Tehran for six months, announced that he has begun a hunger strike to protest the authorities’ refusal to release him on bail pending a retrial.

    The note from Jafar Panahi, starting of his hunger strike, was published on the Instagram page of his wife, Tahereh Saeedi.

    In the note, prominent Iranian director emphasized, “I categorically declare in protest against the extra-legal and inhuman behavior of the judicial and security apparatus and their hostage-taking, I have started hunger strike from the morning of the February 1, 2023. I refused to eat and drink any food and medicine until I was released.”

    “I will remain in this situation until maybe my lifeless body is released from prison,” he added.

    Panahi also wrote in his note, “According to the law, I should have been released on bail after accepting my request for a retrial, but my case has been adjourned for more than 100 days.”

    “While we have seen that it takes less than 30 days from the time of arrest to the hanging of the innocent youth of our country, it took more than 100 days to transfer my case to the branch with the intervention of security forces.”

    “What is certain is that the violent and illegal behaviour of the security institution and the reckless surrender of the judiciary once again shows the implementation of selective and tasteful laws.”

    “It is only an excuse for repression. I knew that the judicial system and the security institutions have no will to implement the law (which they brag about), but out of respect for my lawyers and friends, I went through all the legal channels to fight for my rights.”

    “Today, like many people trapped in Iran, I have no choice but to protest against these inhumane behaviours with my dearest possession, that is, my life.”

    62-year-old Jafar Panahi, Iranian film director, screenwriter, and film editor, was arrested on July 11, 2022, when he went to the prosecutor’s office to follow up on the situation of another filmmaker, Mohammad Rasoulof.

    Panahi was also arrested in 2010, after his support for anti-government protests. He was later convicted of “propaganda against the regime”, sentenced to six years of imprisonment and banned from directing or writing films, Mehr News Agency reported.

    Panahi’s arrest was met with a wave of domestic and international condemnation, but the Islamic Republic has not responded to requests for his release.

    Thousands of film personalities have been arrested in Iran as part of the crackdown on protests that erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested on suspicion of violating the country’s strict dress code.

    The protests involved people from all walks of life and different sects in Iran after Amini’s killing.
