Pakistani-origin, Humza Yousaf took his oath in Urdu after he was officially elected as Scotland’s sixth First Minister.

Yousaf, 37, is the first Muslim, and the youngest ever to hold the post in the devolved region, with a majority of 71 out of 128 votes in Parliament.

After his election on March 28, as leader of the governing SNP, Yousaf received 71 votes for First Minister, with all SNP members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) and all seven Scottish Green MSPs included in 128 voters voting for him in Parliament.

He replaces Nicola Sturgeon, who announced her resignation last month, stepping down as the longest-serving First Minister in Scotland, after more than eight years in office.

Following the win, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called Yousaf to congratulate him, reports the BBC.

He said he wanted to continue “working constructively with the Scottish government” to deliver on what he argued was the “people’s priorities across Scotland, including the need to half inflation, delivering growth, and cut waiting times.”

He said in his victory speech that he will make Scotland a “fairer and wealthier” place.

Making his pitch to MSPs as his family looked on in the Scottish Parliament, the new First Minister leader said, “This Parliament has just given me the opportunity to help steer this nation’s course as we make the next stage of that journey together.

“Doing that will be the honour and the privilege of my life. I will strive every single minute of every day to be worthy of it.” Scottish Conservative Party leader Douglas Ross, Labour’s Sarwar, and Lib Dem Alex Cole-Hamilton also stood to be First Minister.

Seen as a continuity candidate in line with their predecessor Sturgeon’s policies, Yousaf now faces the key challenges of defining a clear plan for the independence of Scotland, which the SNP campaigns for, progressing with controversial gender recognition reforms, and alleviating the cost-of-living crisis.

    Throwback:

When Hamza was elected MP in 2016, during his swearing-in ceremony, he first took his oath in English and then repeated the same in Urdu.

Adding on to his oath at the end, Humza said, “Khuda kareem meri madad farmaega (Lord will help me in the task of delivering my duty)”

Edinburg: Humza Yousaf has been officially elected as Scotland’s sixth First Ministe, with a majority of 71 out of 128 votes in Parliament.

The 37-year-old is Scotland’s youngest-ever head of government, first from an ethnic minority background as well as the first Muslim to lead a major UK party, reports Xinhua news agency.

Shona Robison, the current Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, will be Yousaf’s Deputy First Minister.

He will be sworn into office at a ceremony on Wednesday.

He replaces Nicola Sturgeon, who announced her resignation last month.

Sturgeon formally stepped down on Tuesday morning as the longest-serving First Minister in Scotland, after more than eight years in office.

She was also the first woman to hold the position.

Following the vote on Tuesday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called Yousaf to congratulate him, reports the BBC.

He said he wanted to continue “working constructively with the Scottish government” to deliver on what he argued were the “people’s priorities across Scotland, including the need to half inflation, delivering growth, and cut waiting times.”

Yousaf has pledged to push for another referendum on Scottish independence, saying that the government’s priorities will be delivered more effectively when Scotland is independent.

He said in his victory speech that he will make Scotland a “fairer and wealthier” place.

He became the head of the Scottish National Party, Scotland’s ruling Party, after winning the leadership election on Monday.

Edinburg: Humza Yousaf has been elected the first minority ethnic leader of the Scottish National party in a narrow victory that confirmed deep divisions over policy within his party, according to a media report.

Yousaf is almost certain to be confirmed as Scotland’s next first minister in a nominal vote at Holyrood on Tuesday, but he now has to bridge the divides by bringing the SNP’s warring wings together, The Guardian reported.

Widely seen as Nicola Sturgeon’s preference as her successor, Yousaf defeated his closest rival, Kate Forbes, by a narrower than expected 52 per cent to 48 per cent after second preference votes cast by supporters of the third candidate, Ash Regan, who came last in the first round, were counted. The turnout was 70 per cent, The Guardian reported.

Yousaf, who has become the first minority ethnic leader of the Scottish government, has had the advantage and the curse of being seen as the continuity candidate and Nicola Sturgeon’s unacknowledged favourite, The Guardian reported.

Of all the three candidates, Yousaf (37) was the only enthusiast for Sturgeon’s approach and earned by far the most endorsements from SNP parliamentarians and ministers, notably including Sturgeon’s deputy and closest political friend, John Swinney, himself a former leader of the party.

In many ways, Yousaf represents the “new Scotland” that Sturgeon and her predecessor, Alex Salmond, have sought to project through the SNP and he is seen as the role model of an inclusive, multiracial country and an inclusive nationalism, The Guardian reported.
