Mutton dealers suffer huge losses after livestock trucks stopped for over 48 hours on Srinagar-Jammu highway

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, May 3: Mutton dealers from Kashmir Valley suffered huge losses after traffic police stopped trucks carrying livestock towards Valley on the Srinagar-Jammu highway for more than 48 hours.

All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association said that stopping trucks carrying livestock was ‘unwarranted’ and they are shocked over the callous attitude of the traffic police for not responding to their distress calls.

“We called SSP Traffic National Highway. There was no response, even the SSP Traffic didn’t bother to respond to our text messages,” All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association told the news agency Kashmir News Trust adding that the control room officials also didn’t listen to them.

The Association said that at least 48 trucks laden with livestock were stopped near Udhampur on Dhor Road. “Despite repeated requests, drivers were not allowed to move ahead.”

The Association added that every truck suffered a mortality loss of 2 to 3 sheep. “The estimated loss due to ‘unnecessary’ stoppage of trucks is over Rs 25 lakh. After forcing to stop for over 48 hours, these trucks were allowed to move towards Valley at 5 PM on Tuesday.”

Notably, the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Mr Arun Kumar Mehta had recently directed authorities to ensure hassle-free movement of trucks on the national highway. He had asked authorities not to stop any truck on the highway.

“I was supposed to supply meat to several parties but failed to do so, as the supply didn’t reach in time,” said Mehrajuddin Ganaie, one of the members of All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association.

He said mutton dealers have been continuously facing huge losses as this business has become a source of losses instead of profit due to the callous attitude of the authorities.

SSP Traffic didn’t respond to the phone call, however, one of the traffic officials said that trucks were halted due to one-way traffic near the Nashri area as it is prone to landslides. “If we allow two-way traffic near Nashiri, there will be a traffic jam and it may pose a risk to lives,” he said. Russia hits Ukraine with huge barrage of Iranian-made drones

    [ad_1]

    g7 foreign ministers 63983

Russia hammered Ukraine with a new barrage of missiles and drones in the early hours of Monday morning, as Moscow gears up to celebrate victory over the Nazis in World War II.

In the Kyiv region, Ukrainian air defense shot down 35 Iranian-made Shahed drones, according to Ukraine’s air force. But the debris damaged several buildings and injured civilians. Russian bombers also fired at least eight cruise missiles at the Odesa region, leaving food warehouses destroyed.

Russia celebrates the Soviet triumph over Hitler on May 9 annually, and President Vladimir Putin has used the holiday to boost his strongman image during his decades in power.

But this year’s celebrations will be somewhat muted, with Putin canceling parades in Russia’s Kursk and Belgorod regions, which border Ukraine, and in Russian-occupied Crimea, citing security concerns. Moscow is now in the second year of its full-scale war on Ukraine and there’s no sign of imminent victory, while even the Kremlin is no longer completely safe after last week’s drone attack.

Ukraine said all the drones were shot down, but falling debris still caused destruction. At least five people were injured, reported Sergiy Popko, head of Kyiv region’s military administration. Several cars were destroyed, and residential buildings, a diesel reservoir and a gas pipe were damaged.

Ukraine’s southern Odesa region also came under fire. The Ukrainian army reported that Russia fired at least eight cruise missiles at the region.

“X-22 type missiles hit the warehouse of one of the food enterprises and the recreational zone on the Black Sea coast,” the Ukrainian military said. “Emergency services work at the scene. Three people, all workers of the warehouse, got minor injuries. One person is missing,” Yuriy Kruk, head of Odesa district military administration, reported.

On the eve of Russia’s V-Day, the strikes come as the Kremlin struggles to break a stalemate in Bakhmut, which it has spent months attacking. Russian mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin has veered wildly in recent days, first threatening to pull his forces out of Bakhmut over a row with the Kremlin’s top military officials — then announcing his troops would remain on the battlefield.

Ukraine’s top priority is to hold Bakhmut through May 9 — and embarrass Putin in the process.

Rishi Sunak’s wife set to earn huge dividend income from Infosys

    [ad_1]

Rishi Sunak’s wife, Akshata Murty, is set to earn a huge dividend income from Infosys, India’s second-largest IT firm. Murty, who is the daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, held 3.89 crore shares of Infosys at the end of December, according to company filings with the stock exchanges. The company declared a final dividend of Rs 17.50 per share for FY23, and if Murty retains her shareholding until the record date of June 2, she would receive Rs 68.17 crore.

Together with an interim dividend of Rs 16.50 per share declared in October last year, she would receive a total of Rs 132.4 crore. For the previous fiscal, Infosys paid a total of Rs 31 per share dividend, giving her a total of Rs 120.76 crore. At Thursday’s closing price of Rs 1,388.60 per share on the BSE, her holding is worth just over Rs 5,400 crore.

Nationality of Rishi Sunak’s wife Akshata Murty is a divisive issue in UK

While Rishi Sunak is a British national, his wife Akshata is an Indian citizen, and her non-domiciled status, which allows her to earn money abroad without paying taxes in Britain for up to 15 years, has been a divisive issue in the UK. Her non-domiciled status became an issue of discussion in Britain when Sunak first entered the race to become the prime minister in April last year.

    MS Education Academy

Akshata was born in her mother Sudha Murty’s hometown of Hubballi in northern Karnataka, and did her schooling in Bengaluru, before moving to Claremont McKenna College in California, where she graduated with a dual major in economics and French. She then did a fashion designing diploma from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, followed by a short work stint at Deloitte and Unilever. She thereafter pursued her MBA at Stanford where she met Rishi Sunak.

The two married in 2009 and currently live in a 7-million-pound townhouse in Kensington. Rishi Sunak and his wife also own a flat in Kensington, a mansion in Rishi’s Yorkshire constituency, and a penthouse in California.

    Infosys dividend

Infosys is among the best dividend-paying companies in India, and according to Infosys filings, the promoters hold 13.11 per cent of the company. Of this, the Murthy family owns 3.6 per cent, with Narayana Murthy holding 0.40 per cent stake, his wife Sudha 0.82 per cent, son Rohan 1.45 per cent, and daughter Akshata 0.93 per cent. Other promoters include co-founder S Gopalakrishnan, Nandan M Nilekani, and S D Shibulal and their families.

On Thursday, the company disclosed that it had closed FY23 with a higher net profit of Rs 24,108 crore, earning a revenue of Rs 146,767 crore for FY23 against Rs 121,641 crore in the previous year and a net profit of Rs 24,108 crore against Rs 22,146 crore in the previous year.

As of March 31, 2023, Infosys had a headcount of 343,234 employees, up from 314,015 employees in the previous year.

  • Opinion | Trump’s Huge Jan. 6 Mistake

    Opinion | Trump’s Huge Jan. 6 Mistake

    [ad_1]

    election 2024 trump 70707

But there was Trump in Waco, Texas, opening his inaugural rally of the 2024 campaign with a recording of the song “Justice for All” that he performed with the J6 Prison Choir, with some scenes of Jan. 6 playing on the jumbotrons.

Among those favorably inclined toward it, the bloody riot at the Capitol has progressed from something to be minimized — and blamed on others, whether antifa or federal informants — to closer to something to be celebrated, almost, if not quite, Stop the Steal’s Bastille Day.

For Trump, a master at appropriating the catch lines and attacks of the other side, reversing the meaning of Jan. 6 would be his most audacious move yet. How long is it before that day, in an echo of the phone call with Volodymyr Zelenskyy that got him impeached, becomes “the perfect protest?”

This is a huge mistake in every way, most importantly on the merits, but also on the politics.

Yet Trump’s stance isn’t surprising. He still hews to the two premises of the Jan. 6 riot — that, as a general proposition, the 2020 election was stolen and, more particularly, former Vice President Mike Pence could have stopped the counting of the electoral votes if he weren’t so weak. This is why, in a contradiction, Trump blames Pence for an event that he also portrays as not so bad.

Trump has talked about pardoning the rioters, who are “great patriots,” and floated the idea of the government apologizing to many of them.

Now, it is true that the insistence by Democrats and the media on referring to Jan. 6 always and exclusively as “the insurrection” is tiresome and politically motivated. (Insurrection suggests a sustained campaign, whereas this was a one-time spasm of violence more appropriately referred to as a riot.)

The Justice Department has gone out of its way to run up the number of prosecutions to make a political point about the seriousness of the event, and defendants have been denied bail in a highly unusual manner — if we grant bail to mafia hit men, and we do, we should grant it to someone who punched a cop on Jan. 6.

And there is a rank hypocrisy in the treatment of political violence. The same people on the left who were willing to look the other way during the “mostly peaceful” riots after the killing of George Floyd are outraged by Jan. 6. (Of course, hypocrisy is a two-way street: If it’s wrong to burn down a gas station in the name of Black Lives Matter, it’s not any better to storm the Capitol in the name of Stop the Steal.)

All that said, making excuses for or valorizing Jan. 6 is deeply wrong.

First, there’s the matter of principle. Riots are bad and never justified (except in the rare case when they are a precursor of a just and well-founded act of revolution — for example, the American War for Independence). They hurt people and destroy property, while achieving nothing or setting back the cause they were supposed to advance.

Disorder at the heart of the U.S. government, disrupting a long-standing ritual connected to the peaceful transfer of power, is particularly egregious.

Second, justifying or excusing political violence has a deranging influence on the republic. The more reason both sides have to physically fear each other, the easier it is to justify extreme measures in response, in a widening gyre of escalation.

Third, it’s simply terrible politics. If the other side is desperate to portray you as in bed with fanatics and rioters, it’s best not to go out of your way to prove them right. It’s perverse for Republicans that just as the Jan. 6 Committee has been put out of business and is no longer in a position to constantly remind the public of Jan. 6, here comes Donald Trump to remind people of Jan. 6.

It’d be a little like Richard Nixon running for the 1976 Republican presidential nomination, and campaigning with a barbershop quartet made up of the Watergate burglars.

Or Ulysses S. Grant deciding to run for third term while extolling the unappreciated virtues of the organizers of the Whiskey Ring scandal.

What Trump is doing flies in the face of the lessons of the midterms. Jan. 6 lent emotional power to the Democratic argument that democracy was under threat, and Stop the Steal candidates proved radioactive. Trump wants, in effect, to repeat November 2022’s failed political experiment on a larger scale in 2024.

On top of his natural inclinations, Trump may be making a calculation that in a primary race with Ron DeSantis to be the most MAGA Republican candidate, he can’t lose by staking out the most pro-Jan. 6 position. That’s not a crazy bet, but if Trump is going to be beaten it will probably be, in part, on grounds that he carries too much baggage and is an electability risk. By embracing rather than skirting one of his major vulnerabilities, he gives his adversaries more ammunition on both counts.

Jan. 6 is an outrage that shouldn’t become a cause.
