UP: Pistol recovered from house of Atiq’s lawyer

Prayagraj: The Prayagraj police have recovered a pistol and some cartridges from the residence of slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed’s lawyer Khan Saulat Haneef.
The lawyer has been booked under the Arms Act for the offence.
The court had granted the police a 12-hour custody remand of Saulat Haneef in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case during which the lawyer was interrogated and his residence raided.
Heavy security arrangements were in place at Dhoomanganj police station, where the 61-year-old was interrogated. In the afternoon, he was taken to his house in the Pritam Nagar locality from where the police recovered three phones, a country-made 9 mm pistol and three cartridges.
One of the phones recovered was used to send photographs of Umesh Pal to Asad’s phone four days before Pal was killed outside his residence on February 24 this year, police said.
Asad, one of the sons of Atiq Ahmed, was killed in an exchange of fire with police last month.
The police had reportedly recovered evidence from Asad’s phone that suggested that Haneef had sent him at least 10 photographs of Pal on February 19.
Haneef was booked for Pal’s murder on the basis of this evidence.
A senior police official involved in the investigation, said, “Saulat Haneef’s interrogation provided vital clues to the police which will help the police in collecting concrete evidence against the accused involved in the Umesh Pal murder case.”
The lawyer was also reportedly asked about the various ‘benami’ properties of Atiq in Prayagraj, Lucknow, western UP and in other states. Khan was said to have disclosed the names of some of Atiq’s financiers and business partners.
On March 28, Saulat Haneef was awarded life imprisonment by a court in the Umesh Pal abduction case.
In an FIR lodged in 2007, Umesh Pal alleged that he was abducted and taken hostage at Atiq’s office in Prayagraj’s Chakia locality. Atiq and others allegedly tortured Pal and forced him to withdraw his statement given as a witness in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case.

Hyderabad: Thieves break into house at Shaheennagar, gold & cash stolen

(Representative image) Hyderabad: Burglars broke into a house at Shaheennagar and decamped with gold and cash on Tuesday night.
The house owner, Mohd Ahmed had locked the house and along with family members went to Mahabubnagar to attend a function when the burglars committed the theft.
The burglars broke the latch of the door and gained entry into the house. After breaking the lock of the cupboards they took away gold articles weighing five tolas and Rs. 40,000 cash, said B Bhaskar, SHO Balapur police station.
The police on a complaint from the house owner reached the spot. The clues team visited the house and collected the fingerprints. A case is booked and investigation is on.

Div Com Kashmir reviews progress on Special Summary Revision in Pulwama & Shopian at Circuit House Pulwama

Pulwama, May 2 (GNS): In order to review the progress achieved under ongoing Special Summary Revision-2023 of Electoral Rolls in District Pulwama and Shopian, a meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Divisional Commissioner (Div Com) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Biduri, who is also the Electoral Roll Observer at Circuit House Pulwama.
Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Basharat Qayoom, who is also District Election Officer (DEO), Pulwama and Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Faz Lul Haseeb (DEO), Shopian were also present on the occasion.
The Div Com took a detailed review of the progress achieved in the twin Districts under ongoing SSR-2023 and sought details about the number of fresh applications received, as well as the number of claims and objections.
Div Com emphasized upon the concerned Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) to conduct revisions according to guidelines of ECI as per notified schedule and expedite the process for achieving targets. He also asked them to ensure timely disposal of claims and objections.
Pertinently, the date for filing claims and objections regarding the Special Summary Revision of Photo Electoral Rolls has been extended to May 6, 2023.
The Div Com also enjoined upon the concerned EROs and AEROs to complete the revision of the special summary with 100 percent enrolment of eligible voters, including the addition of new voters and deletion of duplicate voters, within the extended date.
He stressed for organising special outreach programmes for young eligible electors particularly in educational institutions of the District, as well as door-to-door campaigns for achieving set targets.
The Div Com further asked the EROs and AEROs to remain proactive to build awareness and activate all their resources for successful conduct of all SVEEP programmes across all Assembly segments of the twin district Pulwama and district Shopian with focused attention to ensure 100% registration of all eligible and ensure no elector is left unregistered keeping in view the limited time period to conduct the exercise.
Div Com also emphasised on holding meetings with registered political parties and attaining the target of EP ratio.
During the meeting, the Div Com was informed that as many as 397614 voters are already registered in 4 Assembly segments of the district Pulwama with 197628 male and 199973 female electorates. He was further informed that a total of 469 polling stations have been designated in Pulwama.
Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers(AEROs), Deputy District Election Officers, officials from District Election Offices of twin districts and other concerned were present in the meeting.
Later, Div Com held an interactive meeting with recognized Political Parties of district Pulwama including NC, BJP, PDP and Apni Party on a broad range of issues concerning various matters pertaining to elections.
Div Com said that political parties are initiators of reforms and act as agents for mobilizing people and electors, enabling them to express their political choice and we consider political parties as the most important stakeholders in its endeavour to strengthen electoral democracy.
On this occasion, political parties also put forth some issues with regard to elections for quick redressal.
Div Com heard them patiently and assured that all their genuine issues would be looked into and directed the concerned for early redressal of their vital issues.(GNS)

NSUI stage protest at Telangana education min’s house over pvt universities

Telangana Education minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy. Hyderabad: The National Students Union of India (NSUI) Telangana unit leaders tried to lay siege to the house of Education Minister, P. Sabitha Indra Reddy here on Tuesday to protest against the government for allowing private universities without giving proper permission.
The protesters gathered outside the residence of the minister in Srinagar Colony in the Ameerpet area, demanding that the government cancel permission to unrecognised universities.
Police arrested the NSUI leaders who tried to lay siege. Fifteen leaders, including NSUI Telangana president Balmoori Venkat, were arrested. They were shifted to Goshamahal Police Station.
Balmoori Venkat alleged that private universities were cheating the students. He had earlier said that they would lodge complaints against Gurunanak and Srinidhi universities for allowing admissions illegally.
He said the government was allowing private universities without giving proper permission. In 2008, the state government gave permission for five private universities and in 2021, the government again gave permission to six universities.
“The Governor’s approval is necessary for the setting up of private universities under the proper guidelines. But, the state government has given permission to private universities which have violated rules in accepting admissions for students without proper facilities,” he said, and demanded that the education department take action against the private universities which are running illegally in the state.
Venkat alleged that with the political influence, the management has set up private universities and indulged in cheating students by collecting huge fees from parents. The management also influenced their students to stage dharna at Governor’s residence for delay in giving approvals.

Bandipora, May 01 (GNS): A residential house and a cowshed were completely gutted in a massive fire incident in Charwan area of Ajas in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district this evening.
Reports reaching GNS said that a residential house and a cowshed belonging to one Mubeen Ahmad Gojar Matravi, son of Ghulam Mohiuddin Gojar Matravi, got completely damaged in a massive fire incident.
Expressing their anguish against F&ES Department for ‘failing to reach the site’, a group of locals told GNS that despite timely intimation no one from the department turned out for help.
The locals in the meantime hailed Army’s 13 RR and expressed their gratitude towards them for their timely help which, according to them, prevented the fire from spreading to other houses in the vicinity. (GNS)

SRINAGAR: A residential house was damaged in a fire incident in Lolab area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district this afternoon.
Reports said that a fire broke out in a residential house in Cheepora village of Lolab area belonging to one Abdul Gani Khan, son of Late Gulab Khan. Soon after intimation, the Fire and Emergency Department reached the site and doused off the flames.
An F&ES Department official said that the residential house was partially damaged in the incident. (GNS)

Days after House GOP bill is approved, debt ceiling deadlock continues

House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark called on Republicans to “be the grown-ups in the room,” in addressing the debt ceiling.
“The American people are looking at us and saying, this shouldn’t be a partisan drama playing out that we are going to foot the bill for,” the Massachusetts Democrat said on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki.” “Avoid a default crisis that is manufactured by the GOP. And then we can go and talk about investments.”
But Republicans are continuing to blame President Joe Biden, who has called on Congress to pass a clean debt limit increase, saying he will not negotiate with Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on the issue, citing historical precedent.
“Happy to meet with McCarthy,” Biden said at the end of a brief press conference at the White House on Wednesday. “But not on whether or not the debt limit gets extended. That’s not negotiable.”
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise called on Biden to come to the table Sunday.
“The White House ultimately needs to get into this negotiation. The president has been in hiding for two months, Martha,” Scalise told host Martha Raddatz during an interview on ABC’s “This Week.” “That’s not acceptable to Americans. They expect the president to sit in a room with Speaker McCarthy and start negotiating.”
Biden, Scalise said, is “trying to run out the clock and create a debt crisis.”
“We passed a bill to address the problem. It’s time now for the president to get in this game, get off the sidelines and let’s start negotiating and figuring this out. Not in June when we get to the midnight hour, but today.”
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) said Biden is willing to negotiate with McCarthy — just not over the debt limit.
“What he said is that he’s not going to negotiate with people who are threatening to literally blow up our economy, right, put more people out of work, drive up costs, in order to get their way,” Van Hollen said on “Fox News Sunday.”
“He will sit down with Speaker McCarthy to talk about these issues in the framework of the budget and the appropriations process,” Van Hollen added.
If Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling the U.S. government could default on its debt in coming months, according to financial analysts, an event that could plunge the country into economic crisis, as well as harm the nation’s credibility internationally.
But Biden knows “that we can’t default,” Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
One option he sees as a way forward: a sit-down between Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
“He’s saying we can discuss that, we can negotiate but first pay your bills. And I think that — I think Senator McConnell understands this, and I think the President will sit down with Senator McConnell,” Khanna said.

“I take a little issue, Dana, with the cuts language that the media likes to use all the time,” the Minnesota Republican told host Dana Bash. “This is a transformational bill. It would limit spending.”
Speaking later on the same CNN program, former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said he didn’t see much hope that the debt crisis would be resolved quickly or easily.
“I’m really concerned about the debt limit when we approach it,” Kinzinger said.

New Delhi: Delhi BJP will hold an indefinite sit-in outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s house over his allegedly spending Rs 45 crore on renovation of his official residence, a party functionary said Sunday.
The party will stage a sit-in outside Kejriwal’s official residence 6, Flagstaff Road in Civil Lines from Monday, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said.
Earlier in the week, the BJP had alleged that Kejriwal spent Rs 45 crore on renovation of his official house during 2020-22.
“The most shameful thing in this is that this scam was done at a time when Corona was in its worst form in Delhi and hundreds of people were dying every day,” Sachdeva said.
The dharna will be led by BJP MP Harsh Vardhan with workers from Keshav Puram and Chandni Chowk districts, he said.
