CAG Pulls Up JK Bank For Hiring Broadway Hotel For Its Operations

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Comptroller and Auditor General of India has pulled up the Jammu & Kashmir Bank for incurring a wasteful expenditure of Rs 5.28 crore by hiring hotel Broadway in Srinagar, which was not used at all for its operations.

In its report tabled in the Parliament on Tuesday, the CAG said that the Bank entered into a lease agreement with the M/s Broad Way Enterprises Private Limited (firm) in December 2017 and March 2019 for hiring of space in Hotel Broadway for the opening of High Net worth Individual (HNI) Branch and housing its International Banking Division (IBD), respectively, at a monthly rent of Rs 150 per square feet.

It hired the space for housing its International Banking Division (IBD) citing space constraints at the existing premises at Air Cargo Complex, Srinagar. The Bank also placed a work order at a cost of Rs two crore for development of the hired premises in February 2019.

According to the CAG report, the Bank, however, in January 2020 decided to de-hire the premises due to a host of reasons. “The Bank, however, decided (January 2020) to de-hire the premises on the ground that shifting of IBD would not translate into phenomenal growth of foreign exchange business as the forex business in Srinagar was limited. Further, the yearly rental outflow was considered very high vis-à-vis the business opportunities in the opening of HNI branch due to prevailing situation in Kashmir region,” the report states.

“By the time the Bank de-hired (June 2020) premises, it had incurred expenditure of Rs 3.78 crore towards rent and Rs 2.43 crore on the development of the premises. Out of Rs 2.43 crore, an amount of Rs 1.47 crore was spent on civil interior, furniture items that either could not be dismantled or were dismantled with substantial/ major damages. The dismantlement work was carried out (August 2020) at a cost of Rs 2.99 lakh,” it further states.

The CAG has questioned why the Bank hired space in the hotel despite the fact that it had hired already premises for the opening of it at Barzulla, Srinagar and was operating IBD at Air Cargo Complex, Srinagar having sufficient space at the monthly rate of ₹ 75 per sq. ft. and ₹ 85 per sq. ft., respectively.

“Moreover, the decision to open HNI branch and shift IBD at Hotel Broadway may be viewed in light of the fact that the Bank sanctioned (September 2016) a term loan of Rs 48.98 crore in favour of the lesson for renovation of existing hotel building and construction of new building and the term loan was eventually classified (January 2020) as Non-Performing Asset as the lessor could not service the account,” the report further states.

In its reply, the management of the Jammu & Kashmir Bank stated in March 2022, owing to sluggish market patterns and slow growth in overall banking sector, it decided to implement various measures to bring down the cost to income ratio and one of the measure was to vacate the premises in order to cut the costs on account of rental.

“However, the fact remains that the Bank hired the premises without taking cognizance of the fact that the decision to open HNI branch at Barzulla, Srinagar was already taken by the Management. Further, the limited business opportunity with regard to forex business in Srinagar was in the knowledge of the Bank as most of the customers were already dealing with it,” the CAG pointed out. Delhi businessman, friend assaulted by bouncers at hotel; case lodged

    [ad_1]

Delhi: A 29-year-old businessman and his friend were allegedly assaulted by bouncers at a five-star hotel in the Janpath area, police said.

In a purported video of the incident, the bouncers are seen approaching a group of men and the two parties getting into a fistfight. The bouncers are also seen thrashing, punching and kicking the victims.

The police said on Sunday that the victim and his friend got into an argument with the bouncers outside a club at the hotel over entering the establishment.

The alleged incident took place on March 8 when the businessman, his wife and their friends had gone to the hotel for a Holi party, the police said.

The victim was outside with his friend while his wife was inside the club. Around 7-8 pm, he was stopped by the bouncers when he tried to enter the establishment.

He alleged that the bouncers did not allow them inside on the grounds that “stag” entry was not allowed and hurled abuses at them, the police added.

The victim claimed that they were beaten up with sticks and rods.

He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, a police official said, adding a case had been registered.

  • Gujarat Conman Manages Z+ Security Cover, Luxury Hotel and Access to Jammu Kashmir’s High Offices

Gujarat Conman Manages Z+ Security Cover, Luxury Hotel and Access to Jammu Kashmir’s High Offices

    [ad_1]

    by Raashid Andrabi

SRINAGAR: Kiran Bhai Patel, a resident of Gujarat, who falsely claimed to hold a high position in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and had meetings with influential individuals in Jammu and Kashmir, has been formally arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police on March 3.

The arrest followed a day after the police registered a case of cheating and forgery at police station Nishat against the conman.

Patel had been posing as an additional director (strategy and campaign) in the PMO and was caught during his third visit to Kashmir, where he was staying at a luxurious Srinagar five-star hotel. He received a Z-plus security cover, an armoured SUV, and luxurious lodging, which raised suspicions when he arrived in Srinagar for the second time in two weeks without any prior VIP movement information available to security agencies.

The FIR, registered by Srinagar Police at Nishat Police Station, revealed that Patel had been using criminal means and forgery to carry out his activities within the jurisdiction of the police station and other parts of Kashmir. He had allegedly been involved in cheating gullible individuals and pursuing a well-conceived scheme to gain monetary and material benefits.

Patel had been booked under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, and 471 of the IPC at Nishat police station, and the police are currently conducting a thorough investigation. Pradipsinh Vaghela, the ruling BJP’s Gujarat General Secretary, is among 5000 people who follow Patel’s verified Twitter account.

His social media posts and pictures suggest that he had been leading a lavish lifestyle, staying at luxurious hotels and traveling in bulletproof cars.

In photos shared on various social media platforms, Patel can be seen at picturesque sites in Jammu and Kashmir, often in the company of armed personnel. One picture depicts him standing in front of Srinagar’s iconic clock tower, Lal Chowk.

In his maiden February visit, Patel visited health resorts. He interacted with officials at Doodpathri and discussed way and means of improved tourist footfalls from Gujarat. He was at Shankaracharya Tempe on February 22, Doodhpathri on February 27, Gulmarg on February 26, Ahrabal on February 23, according to the photographs and videos he posted on Twitter.

Patel’s Twitter bio states that he holds a doctorate from Commonwealth University, Virginia, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management in Tiruchirappalli, a Master of Technology in computer science, and a Bachelor of Engineering in computer engineering. The police attempted to detain him at the airport, but he had already left in his bulletproof car for the hotel.

This incident has raised serious concerns about the security protocols in place and the ease with which an individual can impersonate a high-ranking government official and gain access to sensitive information and influential individuals. After being taken for a ride, now the authorities say they will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and take appropriate action to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.

So far, the investigation has reportedly revealed that Patel had been operating a well-conceived scheme to defraud unsuspecting individuals and companies, promising them government contracts and other benefits in exchange for monetary and material gain. He had reportedly created fake letters and documents, which he used to dupe his victims.

The police have also discovered that Patel had been in touch with several influential individuals, including politicians, businessmen, and bureaucrats, during his visits to Jammu and Kashmir. He had even managed to secure appointments with some of them, claiming to be representing the Prime Minister’s Office.

According to sources, Patel’s activities had come to the attention of the security agencies after he arrived in Jammu and Kashmir for the second time in two weeks without any prior VIP movement information available to them. The police attempted to detain him at the airport, but he had already left in his bulletproof car for the hotel.

The police seized several electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones, during the search of Patel’s hotel room. They are currently analysing the data to gather more information about his activities and the individuals he had been in touch with.

Report said two cops may face action for extending the hospitality without verifying the details. A media report said they had got information from some IAS officer.
