  • The time George Santos tried to raise crazy money to host a simple rally for Trump

The time George Santos tried to raise crazy money to host a simple rally for Trump

    [ad_1]

    202301 santos magazine francis 23

Santos was defensive about the unusually high price tag for a local event.

“Understand that I’m not here for personal gains or for any kind of financial gains,” he said in a spring 2019 video message to the group posted on its Facebook page. “All monies raised are solely for structuring this movement slash organization.”

Santos was only able to pull in $645 out of a $20,000 goal. It’s unclear what happened to the funds.

While Santos was ultimately unsuccessful in raising $20,000 for the Trump group, his extravagant asks drew questions about whether he was out for personal, financial gain. The episode has echoes of other fundraising efforts that have made Santos the target of state and federal prosecutors. The Federal Election Commission is probing questionable campaign expenses including nearly $11,000 spent on rent for his Long Island home and the FBI is investigating claims that he absconded with $3,000 in donations meant for a disabled U.S. Navy veteran’s dying service dog.

Santos was a fringe player in 2019. He’s now a national political figure — but not for anything he’s accomplished. Instead, the Republican congressman who was elected in November in a swing district on Long Island, is best known for largely inventing his campaign biography. He has resisted calls for his resignation, saying his resume was only embellished, although he did step away from committee assignments citing the “ongoing attention surrounding both my personal and campaign financial investigations.”

Naysa Woomer, Santos’ communications director, said she could not comment on any campaign or personal matters, and calls to Santos’ personal attorney were not returned.

In spring 2019, a year before his first, unsuccessful run for Congress, Santos became a founding member of United for Trump, a grassroots group supporting President Donald Trump’s reelection. At a March 23 rally at Trump Tower in Manhattan, Santos was filmed holding a “Gays for Trump” sign.

By March 25, Santos set up a GoFundMe account that other United for Trump members pushed to the group to raise money for a future “Northeast tour” of Trump rallies.

He posted a video in the United for Trump Facebook group to introduce himself to other members that month.

Santos had a few specific asks: He said he wanted to establish an LLC with an accountant, at a cost of $500 to $750. United for Trump also needed a lawyer — “to keep in our back pocket and just to retain” — for $2,500.

In the March video, Santos alluded to “a lot of confusion as to what we are raising money for,” acknowledging it can cost less than $100 to get permits for rallies. But, he explained, United for Trump would be different than what members were used to, calling it “an organization to actually give power.”

In May 2019, Santos was listed in a Facebook post as the group’s “president” using part of his full legal name, George Anthony Devolder. Other United for Trump committee members included Joseph, who organized central New York rallies for a group called ACT for America, described as a “national anti-Muslim hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Joseph said she met Santos when he introduced himself to her at the March Trump Tower rally and that he “seemed like a sweet kid.”

“In grassroots, we accept everyone who wants to join and do a little work,” she said, adding that after the New York City rally, most of United for Trump’s other events envisioned for that year “didn’t get off the ground.”

Joseph said she was preoccupied with other things and began fading away from the group around the time Santos became its president, and said she didn’t remember the group getting very far with organizing events while she was involved.

In July 2019, Santos did help organize a counterprotest to an Impeach Trump rally in Buffalo — an event that turned violent.

Rus Thompson, a longtime conservative activist from Buffalo, was the lead organizer of the counter-rally. He had no recollection of Santos attending the event. The New York congressman should “never have been elected,” Thompson said in a recent telephone interview.

United for Trump planned to hold another Erie County rally at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center on August 3, 2019, according to administrator posts in the group’s Facebook page.

Santos had asked United for Trump members to help raise six-figures for the August event.

“Need your help. The est. cost to bring the pro-Trump rally to Buffalo with credible speakers is $20,000,” according to a call for donations that went out in the Facebook group.

Thompson questioned the $20,000 price tag for Buffalo speakers.

“I never paid speakers,” he said.

Planning for the August Buffalo rally was the last time Santos seemed to be involved with United for Trump. In October 2019, he announced his 2020 candidacy for Congress at a Queens Village Republican Club dinner. His biography for the event doesn’t mention United for Trump.

Thompson said he didn’t remember an event happening in Buffalo around that time. The location Santos proposed, he said, didn’t make sense.

“That’s really expensive and not set up for a rally,” Thompson said. “Car or boat show, yes, but political rally? No.”

India’s G20 Presidency: KU Set To Host C-20 Working Group Meeting On ‘Gender Equality And Disability’

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The University of Kashmir is set to host a two-day C20 Working Group Meeting on ‘Gender Equality and Disability’, a mega event that draws national and international experts to formulate Policy White Papers for discussions on the G20 platform.

Civil-20 or C20 is the Official Engagement Group of G20 providing a platform for civil society organisations, NGOs and policy-planners to engage important stakeholders and address the root causes of “gender inequality and disability”.

The event being held at KU’s Gandhi Bhawan on February 13-14 comes amid the University’s selection from amongst 15 premier institutions in the country to host Youth20 events as part of India’s G20 Presidency, a significant milestone in the varsity’s imprint and visibility on the national academic landscape.

The C20 GED WG Meeting focuses on policy dialogues concerning two sub-themes including “Women’s Safety” and “Engaging Men and Boys”, besides highlighting ‘Udharaan’ as a successful intervention to address gender inequality. It also envisions evolving a grassroots approach to create pathways for improving women’s access to legal aid and other social support systems. A special focus of deliberations will also be on gender concerns related to specially-abled women.

National and international Coordinators and Co-Coordinators of C20 GED Working Group are among 50 delegates expected to join deliberations in both online and offline modes. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is coordinating the event.

Vice-Chancellor KU Prof Nilofer Khan, who is personally monitoring the arrangements, said it is a historic occassion for the University to be associated with events related to the country’s G20 Presidency.

“It is recognition of the University’s commitment to not only promote our national policies and programmes but also to advance the country’s G20 goals and objectives,” she said.

The Vice-Chancellor has already constituted a task force of academics and officers to oversee arrangements for the February 13-14 event.

Notably, the University of Kashmir has been chosen amongst 15 premier institutions in the country to host a Youth20 event, marking a significant moment in its history and transition to come up as an institution of excellence in the country. Youth delegates from G20 countries are scheduled to attend the Youth20 event in the second week of May 2023 at the University’s main campus.

  • Saudi Arabia to host Santosh Trophy semifinals and final

Saudi Arabia to host Santosh Trophy semifinals and final

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: The semi-finals and final of the 76th National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy, to be held abroad for the first time ever, are set to take place between March 1 to 4, 2023, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, it was announced here on Thursday.

The AIFF Secretary General Dr Shaji Prabhakaran, along with Mr Avijit Paul, Executive Committee Member, AIFF, and Joint Secretary, Football Association of Odisha, made the announcement here on the eve of the launch of the Santosh Trophy.

Dr Prabhakaran informed the media that it was decided in a meeting between the AIFF and the Saudi Arabia Football Federation (SAFF) earlier in the day that the iconic King Fahd International Stadium will play host to semi-finals and finals of the Hero Santosh Trophy.

The timings of the aforementioned matches will be announced at a later date.

“This is a great moment for Indian football, as the four states that make it to the semifinals will get to fight for the Santosh Trophy title in Saudi Arabia. I would like to convey my sincere thanks to the SAFF for all their help and cooperation in helping us achieve this vision of taking the Hero Santosh Trophy to a next level,” said Dr Prabhakaran.

“I would also like to profusely thank the Government of Odisha for extending their massive and continuing support in hosting the 12 teams in the final rounds of the Santosh Trophy,” he added.

The AIFF Secretary General pointed out that this would make the final round, beginning on Friday, here in Bhubaneswar, an even more interesting and competitive event.

“The battle for the last four is likely to be an intense one, and we all hope that the fight will go down to the wire to book a spot on the international stage, which will be the first time since 1941, when the Santosh Trophy was launched as a six-venue tournament with the final being played in Kolkata,” he said.

“The Santosh Trophy is central to our plans in development of football across the country, as we look to improve the conditions for all our State FAs to make bigger contributions in taking Indian Football forward. Helping out Member Associations is central to our plans for long term growth, as we have charted out last month in Vision 2047, and these are just baby steps towards a much larger goal,” he added.

The Secretary General also spoke at length about the development of football across the country, something that has been presented by the Federation in Vision 2047, earlier this year.

“If you go through the Strategic Roadmap, we aim to improve both our men’s and women’s teams in the coming years, but that improvement does not happen with the click of a button. There are carefully charted out steps that we must follow in order to achieve our goals. We are also getting a lot of support from the Central and various State Governments, and we are extremely thankful for it,” said Dr Prabhakaran.

Meanwhile, AIFF Executive Committee Member and FAO Joint Secretary Mr Avijit Paul lauded the Federation for the changes it has brought about in Indian football, and the way it is working towards an overall improvement in a strategic manner.

“The AIFF has hugely changed in the way it has been working in recent times. Previously, we, the state teams used to play only a couple of matches and then just go back, if we did not qualify for the Santosh Trophy Final Rounds. Now, however, everyone is getting a substantial number of games, and that is the way forward,” said Paul.

“The President Mr Kalyan Chaubey and the Secretary General Dr Prabhakaran have also been closely looking into the development of football across various parts of the country, something that was not seen before,” he added.

The Federation Secretary General further expressed interest in increasing Indian football’s collaboration with Odisha.

“We are very serious about a collaboration with Odisha as a key partner in our projects. Football is among the top 2 sports in Odisha, and we need to further grow it here,” he said.

The final rounds of the Santosh Trophy are set to get underway in Bhubaneswar, Odisha from February 10-20.

Twelve teams have been divided into two groups of six each in the Final Rounds, and will play each other in a round robin format; the top two teams from each group will have the honour of being the first teams in the Santosh Trophy to play on foreign soil, once they move to Riyadh for the semifinals and final.
