It immediately raised questions about Francis’ overall health, and his ability to celebrate the busy Holy Week events that are due to begin this weekend with Palm Sunday.

Bruni said Francis had been suffering breathing troubles in recent days and went to the Gemelli hospital for tests.

“The tests showed a respiratory infection (Covid-19 infection excluded) that will require some days of medical therapy,” Bruni’s statement said.

Francis appeared in relatively good form during his regularly scheduled general audience earlier Wednesday, though he grimaced strongly while getting in and out of the “popemobile.”

Francis had part of one lung removed when he was a young man due to a respiratory infection, and he often speaks in a whisper. But he got through the worst phases of the Covid-19 pandemic without at least any public word of ever testing positive.

Francis had been due to celebrate Palm Sunday this weekend, kicking off the Vatican’s Holy Week observances: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and finally Easter Sunday on April 9. He has canceled all audiences through Friday, but it wasn’t clear whether he could keep the Holy Week plans.

Francis has used a wheelchair for over a year due to strained ligaments in his right knee and a small knee fracture. He has said the injury was healing and been walking more with a cane of late.

Francis also has said he resisted having surgery for the knee problems because he didn’t respond well to general anesthesia during the 2021 intestinal surgery.

He said soon after the surgery that he had recovered fully and could eat normally. But in a Jan. 24 interview with The Associated Press, Francis said his diverticulosis, or bulges in the intestinal wall, had “returned.”

Following the lunch, Republican senators expressed relief and appeared optimistic about the minority leader’s condition.

“I understand his biggest concern right now is that he missed the halibut. he is a big fan of Sen. Murkowski’s halibut,” said Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) after the lunch. “He’s going to be OK.”

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) said he expected McConnell to be kept over the weekend but that his understanding is McConnell “feels fine.”

The fall took place at the Waldorf Astoria hotel at a private dinner. The McConnell-aligned Super PAC Senate Leadership Fund also hosted an event in the building that evening, which several senators attended, including Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

Senate Republicans earlier in the day were in the dark over the Kentucky Republican’s health status.

“I trust him and his team and his doctors to tell us what’s going on,” Graham said. “Just hope he’s doing well.”

McConnell isn’t the only senator who has been hospitalized recently. In recent weeks, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) checked himself into Walter Reed for clinical depression. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), meanwhile, was in the hospital recently for shingles.

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) said earlier in the day that he was not surprised about the initial lack of information, noting the incident had just happened and that “if anybody can hold information close he can.”

McConnell, who is 81 and had polio as a child, previously fractured his shoulder in 2019 after tripping on his patio at home.

Fetterman is receiving care on a voluntary basis and went to the hospital after evaluation from Brian Monahan, attending physician of the U.S. Congress, according to the statement.

While it’s the Pennsylvania senator’s first public admission to mental health treatment, his other health challenges became a frequent subject during his campaign. He suffered a significant stroke during his bid for the Senate, which forced him off the campaign trail for several months and affected his auditory processing.

More recently, Fetterman spent several nights in the hospital for what his office described as lightheadedness. Testing during that episode showed no evidence of any new stroke or seizure, his office said later.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the chamber’s No. 2 Democrat, commended Fetterman for seeking help and expressed confidence that, with care, he’d be able to continue serving his term.

“This is an unimaginable challenge that he’s faced in life. He deserves the very best and professional care and I’m sure he’ll get it,” Durbin said. “There isn’t a single family that isn’t touched by [mental illness] and those that are touched by it and succeed, really are very honest about it. I’m glad John has done that.”

The Democrat’s wife tweeted about his mental health struggles shortly after his office’s statement, saying, “After what he’s been through in the past year, there’s probably no one who wanted to talk about his own health less than John. I’m so proud of him for asking for help and getting the care he needs.”

Fetterman was out during a Thursday morning Senate Agriculture Committee hearing on nutrition programs, a notable absence since he’s chairing the nutrition subcommittee.

He also missed votes on Thursday. The Senate is now on a recess until Feb. 27; it’s unclear if Fetterman will return to the Capitol then.

Pennsylvania’s other Democratic senator, Bob Casey, underwent surgery for prostate cancer this week. His spokesperson Mairéad Lynn said the “procedure went well” and Casey will return to the Senate “after a period of rest and recovery.” Democrats have a 51-49 Senate majority, giving the party more breathing room on absences than last Congress’s evenly split chamber.
