Torres: Biden’s age isn’t ideal but ‘best hope’ to win

NEW YORK — Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday faulted Democrats for not doing more to cultivate the “next generation of leadership,” adding it wasn’t ideal that President Joe Biden was mounting a reelection bid at age 80.

“He has a powerful record on which to run for reelection,” Torres said at a Manhattan event hosted by the Association for a Better New York, a pro-business civic group. “But is it ideal that we have an 80-year-old running for president? No. But he’s the best hope we have for beating Donald Trump or Ron DeSantis.”

Torres has backed Biden’s reelection bid.

Biden, who is already the oldest person to be elected president, has had to confront difficult questions about whether he’s mentally fit for four more years of grueling schedules. If elected, Biden would turn 86 at the end of his second term.

Torres, 35, made the remarks as part of a wide-ranging conversation on his first term in Congress alongside colleagues who have gotten significantly older than they were decades prior.

“I’m like an embryo in Congress,” the Bronx Democrat joked.

He faulted Democrats for not setting term limits for committee chairs like their Republican counterparts, a setup he said emboldens lawmakers to “feel they have a right to die with their gavel.”

“That stifles, I believe, the development of the next generation of leadership,” Torres said. “We have to be much more effective at building a bench rather than benching our young talent.”

War-torn FC Mariupol reborn in Brazil: ‘The least we could do to help give hope’

    [ad_1]

A Ukrainian community in southern Brazil has decided to turn its local football team into FC Mariupol, a top-flight club disbanded after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in a show of solidarity with the war-torn country.

AA Batel, a team from the Prudentópolis region in Paraná, said on Monday they will take on Mariupol’s kit, crest and logo a year after the Ukrainian club’s facilities and stadium were destroyed in the invasion which Moscow calls a special military operation.

“The club represents the identity of our community and our community is more than 70% Ukrainian and Ukrainian descendants,” said the AA Batel president, Alex Lopes. “Ukraine has always been incredibly supportive of great Brazilian football talent and became an important gateway for players to enter the European market. This is the least we could do to help keep their club alive and give hope to Ukrainians all across the world.”

Hope to see legal stamp on rainbow marriages: Parents of LGBTQ+ children

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A group of over 400 parents has written to Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud, heading a bench hearing the pleas seeking legal sanction for same-sex marriage, urging that their LGBTQIA++ wards be granted the right to “marriage equality”.

The letter by Sweekar-The Rainbow Parents’ assumes significance it comes when a five-judge constitution bench headed by the CJI is hearing a batch of petitions seeking legal validation for same-sex marriage for the fourth day.

“We desire to see our children and children-in-law find final legal acceptance for their relationship under the Special Marriage Act in our country. We are certain that a nation as big as ours which respects its diversity and stands for the value of exclusion, will open its legal gate of marriage equality to our children too.

“We are growing old. Some of us will touch 80 soon, we hope that we will get to see the legal stamp on the rainbow marriage of our children in our lifetime,” the group said in its letter.

Sweekar-The Rainbow Parents’ is a group formed by the parents of Indian LGBTQIA++ ((lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, pansexual, two-spirit, asexual, and ally) wards with the aim of supporting each other to accept one’s child fully and be happy as a family.

“We are appealing to you to consider marriage equality,” the letter said.

It said from knowing about gender and sexuality, to understanding the lives of our children, to finally accepting their sexuality and their loved ones- the parents have gone through the whole “gamut of emotions”.

“We empathise with those who are opposing marriage equality, because some of us were there too. It took us education, debate and patience with our LIGTQIA++ children to realise that their lives, their feelings and their desires are valid. Similarly, we hope that those who oppose marriage equality will come around too. We have faith in the people of India, the Constitution and the democracy of our nation,” it said.

It referred to the apex court judgement of 2018 by which it decriminalised consensual gay sex.

The judgement ensured LGBTQIA++ people are treated with dignity and acceptance.

“Society is a changing and evolving phenomenon. Just as a rising tide lifts all boats, the judgement by the Supreme Court created a ripple effect on society and has helped,” it said.

Hope Rahul will be convicted in my petition too: Sushil Modi

    [ad_1]

Patna: Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Thursday expressed hope that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will get “adequate punishment” by a court here which has “summoned” the latter next month in connection with a case lodged by the former.

In a video statement, Modi, now a Rajya Sabha member, disclosed that the MP/MLA court in Patna has asked Gandhi to appear in person on April 12 in connection with the petition lodged by the BJP leader following the then Congress president’s controversial speech at Karnataka in 2019.

“Gandhi has been summoned for recording of statement under Section 317 CrPC. I am confident that like the court in Surat, the court here will hold him guilty and award adequate punishment (adequate punishment)”, said Modi, who had filed his petition on April 18, 2019, five days after Gandhi made the impugned remarks at a rally in the thick of Lok Sabha polls.

Modi added “Gandhi and his party believe in dynasty politics and cannot bear the sight of an OBC, Narendra Modi, in the Prime Minister’s chair. They, therefore, routinely engage in slander. Only the judiciary can effectively check this tendency”.

Ramallah: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his Israeli counterpart,Isaac Herzog expressed the hope that peace and stability would prevail in the Palestinian territories and the entire Middle East.

Abbas received a telephone call from Herzog to congratulate him on the occasion of the Muslim holy month of Ramzan, which falls on March 23 this year, reports Xinhua news agency.

The phone call came amid growing tensions between Israel and the Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem that have been going on since the beginning of this year.

At least 89 Palestinians, including women and children, have been killed since January, while 15 Israelis were killed in a series of attacks in the same period of time, according to official figures.

The telephone conversation also came two days after a five-party meeting was held in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, gathering representatives from the Palestinian Authority, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and the US.

According to a communique released after the meeting, the five parties recognized the necessity to de-escalate tensions on the ground, prevent further violence, as well as pursue confidence-building measures, and address outstanding issues through direct dialogue.

The meeting was the second of its kind to end the flaring tensions.

The first one was held in the Jordanian city of Aqaba on February 26.

Hope it’s taken to logical conclusion: Mehbooba on J-K’s Amshipora case

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti Wednesday expressed hope that the Army court’s decision to recommend life imprisonment for a captain in connection with a “staged” encounter in Shopian district’s Amshipora is taken to a logical conclusion.

She also demanded government jobs for the victim’s families.

Completing general court-martial proceedings in less than a year, an Army court has recommended life imprisonment for a captain in connection with the killing of three men in the “staged” encounter in Amshipora in south Kashmir in July 2020.

According to officials, the life sentence is subject to confirmation by higher army authorities.

“I hope the case is taken to a logical conclusion because we have seen, be it Pathribal or Machhil, it is said there will be action, but ultimately, nothing happens.

“I hope the three innocent labourers who were brutally murdered get justice,” Mehbooba told reporters in the Shopian district in south Kashmir.

She said Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had promised government jobs to the victims’ families and should keep the pledge.

“Whatever little money they were given, that was spent in fighting the case. Now they have nothing left. So, I appeal to the LG to provide jobs to them,” Mehbooba added.

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister also demanded government job and compensation to the family of Rashid Dar of Kunan village in Kupwara, whose body was recently found in a forest “after he went missing in army custody two months earlier”.

“He was also an innocent labourer. He was in Army custody and disappeared. Then his body was found. We have no hope of justice, but, I will still say that a thorough probe be conducted.

“His family is very poor, they should be given a job and a huge compensation from the Army,” Mehbooba said.
