AIADMK opposes Tamil Nadu CM’s remark on ‘honour killing’ accused

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The main opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, AIADMK, on Thursday strongly objected to a point made by Chief Minister M K Stalin while explaining the police action following the murder of a young man, in a case of alleged honour killing.

After Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami raised the issue of the murder that took place in Krishnagiri District and sought action, Stalin, quoting the police report, told the Assembly that Sankar, a person accused in the murder, was a local AIADMK functionary (branch secretary).

AIADMK MLAs objected to the remark and said the man was not a party office-bearer. It led to an uproar.

Speaker Appavu wondered if the Chief Minister did not have the right to mention what was reported by the police. Leader of the House Duraimurugan stated that the CM only referred to the police report and if fresh police inputs emerged later, that point — indicating to the AIADMK reference — may be changed.

Stalin said both the police and district administration had been taking all steps, including commencing initiatives to spread awareness, to prevent such crimes.

On March 21, 2023, a 28-year old man, Jagan, a construction worker, was hacked to death on a highway in Krishnagiri district allegedly by three men including Sankar, who is the father of Jagan’s wife.

Sankar is now lodged in Salem Central Prison.

Jagan had recently married Sankar’s daughter, a second-year college student, against the wishes of her family, police said. Enraged by this, Sankar and two others allegedly committed the murder.

Hyderabad honour killing: Dalit man killed by lover’s brother; 10 held

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Ten persons have been arrested for allegedly hacking a Dalit man to death in Petbasheerabad on March 1. The deceased had eloped with a woman of another caste.

The couple – 28-year-old Devarakonda Harish, a DJ sound system operator, and 25-year-old Manisha – had eloped to get married.

Manisha’s brother Deendayal, 30, was arrested along with his friends – Naresh, Venkatesh Goud, Rohit Singh, Band Venkat, Gaddam Akshay Kumar, Parwary Aniketh, Koyalkar Manish, Bure Sainath, and Mathangi Rajendra Kumar.

While Harish was a resident of Sooraram, Manisha lived in Ziyaguda area of the city. They would constantly talk on the phone. Harish was repeatedly warned by Manisha’s family members to stay away from her but the couple did not pay heed.

On February 22, the couple eloped and rented an apartment in Petbasheerabad. They were soon planning to get married.

However, on the night March 1, Harish and Manisha were attacked by her brother and his friends near Anjaneya Swamy temple in Dulapally, the police said. Harish was stabbed to death and Manisha was taken away.

    Correction

Siasat.com had earlier reported about the same incident and mentioned the woman belonging to a Muslim community. However, according to the Petbasheerabad police, the woman belongs to a backward community. It is not an inter-faith honour killing.

Honour killing: Hyderabad man killed by wife’s relatives

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In a suspected case of honour killing, a youth has been murdered allegedly over an inter-faith marriage on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Harish, who works as a DJ, was stabbed to death by unidentified persons in the Dullapally area under the limits of Pet Basheerabad police station of Cyberabad police commissionerate on Thursday. The body was identified later.

The youth was staying in the area for the last six months. He was earlier residing in Yellareddyguda in Hyderabad, where he fell in with a girl of another community.

As the girl’s family rejected the marriage proposal, Harish shifted to Dullapally. He, however, continued meeting the girl, and they married secretly.

Harish’s parents have blamed the girl’s family for the murder. They alleged that the girl’s relatives killed Harish in front of the girl, and after the murder took her away.

Following a complaint by the victim’s family, police picked up a few suspects and were questioning them.

Police shifted the body to Gandhi Hospital for autopsy.

NATO flags fly at half-staff to honour Turkey-Syria quake victims

    [ad_1]

Brussels: Flags of the 30 NATO member states at the military alliance’s headquarters in Brussels flew at half-staff to honour the nearly 8,000 people who lost their lives in the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria earlier this week.

In a Twitter post on Tuesday, the 30-member alliance, of which Turkey is a member, said: “All flags at NATO Headquarters are at half-mast today in solidarity with our ally Turkey.”

NATO also outlined its contributions to relief efforts.

“Over 1,400 emergency response personnel from more than twenty NATO allies and partners, including invitees Finland and Sweden, are deploying to Turkey, helping to respond to the devastating earthquakes which struck the country,” the post read.

On Monday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had said that he was in contact with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, adding that “NATO allies are mobilising support now”.

NATO and its partners are providing assistance to Turkey through seismic experts, search and rescue teams with dogs, freighters, structural engineers, and medical personnel and supplies, according to an official statement.

As of Wednesday morning, Turkey has reported a total of 5,894 deaths with 34,810 injured, while Syria’s toll has increased to 2,032, with nearly 3,000 injured persons.

The devastating 7.8 tremor struck Turkey’s southern province of Kahramanmaras at 4.17 a.m. on Monday morning, which was followed by a 6.4-magnitude temblor a few minutes later in Gaziantep province.

At around 1.30 p.m, a third 7.5-magnitude tremor hit Kahramanmaras.

  • Attempts made to forget Netaji, our effort to honour him: Amit Shah

Attempts made to forget Netaji, our effort to honour him: Amit Shah

    [ad_1]

Port Blair: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday lamented that attempts were made to ensure Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gets forgotten, but the Narendra Modi government has taken several initiatives such as the setting up of a memorial in Andamans to honour his legacy.

Shah is on a visit here to commemorate the 126th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Addressing a gathering at Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology auditorium here, Shah said, “We cannot forget the contribution of Subhash babu in India’s freedom struggle but the irony is attempts were made to forget him.

“We will not let this happen (on attempts made to forget Netaji) and these initiatives by PM Modi ji are a symbol of India’s indebtedness towards him”, he said.

Those who are brave are not dependent on anyone for their memory, he said.

“We installed a statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on Kartavya Path in New Delhi and this will remind our generation about their Kartavya in future for our country. I would like to commend the vision of PM Modi for naming 21 Islands after the Param Veer Chakra awardees.

” Not the least, Netaji Memorial Center at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island will make you curious to know more about this place, especially the young generation,” Shah said.

Mentioning that to his knowledge, no other country had honoured its soldiers by naming islands after them, Shah said the Prime Minister’s initiative in this regard was “highly commendable”.

“His decision for a memorial at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island (Ross Island) is also commendable. I believe that all the decisions taken by PM Modi will help this place to flourish further,” the Union Home minister said.

Pointing out that there is “something” in this soil (Andaman), Shah said despite facing brutal torture by the British, the freedom fighters lodged at the Cellular Jail did not bow down to the colonial rulers.

“This is not just Cellular Jail but this is a tirtha sthan’ (pilgrimage). Netaji liberated Andaman first and then PM Modi ji renamed Islands after Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. In history, this chapter will be written in golden words,” he said.
