Land, homes for poor- Law to be enacted very soon in J&K: LG Manoj Sinha

    [ad_1]

Jammu, Mar 26: Stating that he doesn’t have to contest any election in J&K nor does he indulge in politics, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Sunday said a law will soon be enacted to provide land and homes to poor lot of the UT.

“I am surprised to see that in J&K there has been no law for providing law and homes to the poor. J&K administration is working on it and very soon there will be a law enacted in this regard,” the LG said while speaking on the 450th Prakash Utsav of Goswami Shri Guru Nabha Dass Ji Maharaj in Jammu, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). He said that the poor lot will have better land and housing facilities soon.

He said that the poor will get land and homes too. “Everything will be done for them by the J&K administration,” the LG said. He said the way the administration led by him provided housing facilities to migrant Kashmiri Pandits, similar facilities will be provided to government employees who are non-J&K residents.

“We will ensure that safe and secure accommodation is provided to the employees who belong to other parts of the country and are presently posted in J&K. We know working in Kashmir is a bit challenging,” the LG said.

He said that the administration is committed to convert dreams of Prime Minister Narendera Modi about J&K into action on ground.

“I was surprised to see 270 trucks ferrying files of darbar move from Srinagar to Jammu. Today, we are the number one UT in the country to have E-services. We have 450 E-Services, 102 services under PGSA. There are some gaps that are being filled by May this year,” he said.

The LG said that there was a time when only 7 km of road was laid in J&K and today the figure is 20 km and 15 kms of road is being macadamised on a daily basis.

“A lot has changed in the past three years. Under the self-employment scheme and women self-help groups, hundreds of youth including young girls were trained to become good entrepreneurs. In every Panchayat, youth are being selected for entrepreneurship training and 20 youth are being trained under skill development program,” he said—(KNO)

  • New York nears deal to ban gas stoves in new homes

New York nears deal to ban gas stoves in new homes

    [ad_1]

New York would be the first to take this step through legislative action; California and Washington have done so through building codes. An agreement has not been finalized to ensure passage, but the new restrictions are included in all three plans being discussed in Albany.

Supporters see the potential law as a national model that they hope can spur similar action by other states and the federal government to limit fossil fuel use in buildings, which are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions contributing to climate change.

“All eyes are on us and a lot of other states are looking to what New York does,” said Pat McClellan, policy director at the New York League of Conservation Voters. “If we prove it can be done and we have the political will to do this, it’s going to open the floodgates for other states to take action.”

Republicans across the nation have stoked anger about proposals targeting gas stoves after a federal official said the Consumer Product Safety Commission should consider a ban. In Florida, Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis urged lawmakers to approve a tax exemption for gas stoves and declared federal officials aren’t “taking our gas stoves away from us.”

In New York, Hochul hasn’t proposed a measure to ban the sale of new gas stoves for existing buildings, just new buildings. New York’s climate plan, however, backs such a step in the future.

All three proposals being considered in New York — the ones from the Assembly, Senate and governor — have some exemptions, including for emergency back-up generators, hospitals, laundromats and commercial kitchens.

The measures would continue to allow gas stoves in new restaurants, but would ultimately block them in residential and most other new buildings. Details would be worked out by the state’s building codes council.

The proposals face opposition from fossil fuel companies, business groups and homebuilders. Some upstate Democratic lawmakers have concerns about the plan and are sensitive to questions from their constituents about the perceived cost and reliability of electric heating options.

“I would prefer that we incentivize electric buildings, either through tax credits or other proposals, rather than forcing it as an issue because there’s a lot of concern and angst in particular in western New York,” said Assemblymember Monica Wallace (D-Lancaster). “We shouldn’t necessarily ban people from pursuing other options if that’s what they want.”

New York’s climate law mandates steep emissions reductions in the coming years with a goal of net-zero by 2050. A ban on burning fossil fuels in new buildings is recommended by the state’s climate plan that was developed over a multiyear process and approved last December.

New York City has already enacted a ban on fossil fuel combustion equipment including stoves, with exemptions for restaurants and other specific uses, in most new buildings under seven stories starting next year and in 2027 for taller buildings.

The proposed dates for the statewide new requirement differ, as do the height of the buildings that would be captured. The earliest date backed by the state Senate is the beginning of 2025 for residential and buildings below seven stories. Hochul and the Assembly backed banning gas in new homes starting in 2026.

  • Israeli min orders demolition of Palestinian homes during Ramzan

Israeli min orders demolition of Palestinian homes during Ramzan

    [ad_1]

Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, ordered the continuation of the demolition of Palestinian homes in Jerusalem during the holy month of Ramzan, leading to condemnation from the Palestinian Foreign Ministry.

The Israeli authorities usually refrain from carrying out demolitions in East Jerusalem during Ramzan due to religious sensitivity.

On Monday, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation said, “National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir asked the police to continue demolishing homes built without permits in East Jerusalem during the month of Ramzan.”

Commenting on this, the Israeli minister said on Israeli radio (Kan) on Monday morning, that Ramadan does not mean that we should settle down and surrender to those who break the law because of the advent of this month.

The police are also preparing to implement the instructions of the Israeli minister, despite the potential cost and the warnings issued by the heads of the Israeli security services about Ben Gvir’s movements east of Jerusalem

Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned “in the strongest terms” the Israeli minister’s statements, and considered them “an incitement to further escalation of the situation in the conflict arena.”

The ministry said in a statement, “These positions are liable to ignite more fires in the arena of conflict, especially as they fall within the context of what Jerusalem is being subjected to in terms of large-scale Judaization and Israeliization operations that lead as a result to operations and crimes of ethnic cleansing and forcible deportation.”

The ministry held “the Israeli government fully and directly responsible for the occupation’s crimes and continuous violations in Jerusalem.”

Since assuming the position of Minister of National Security in December 2022, Ben Gvir has directed the acceleration of the demolition of Palestinian-owned buildings in the city of East Jerusalem, built without a permit.

According to human rights organisations, Palestinians in Jerusalem also face great difficulties in obtaining building permits, which cost tens of thousands of dollars for each apartment.

Palestinian National Information Center says that the number of homes demolished since Israel’s occupation of Jerusalem in 1967 has reached more than 1,900.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced in a report that, from the beginning of 2023 until the end of February, the Israeli authorities demolished 67 homes in East Jerusalem, claiming “unauthorized construction.”

On the other hand, the authorities demolished 143 homes throughout 2022, and in 181 homes in 202, according to the same report.

Palestinian circles in Jerusalem estimate that there are about 20,000 homes threatened with demolition in East Jerusalem on the grounds of “unauthorized construction.”

  • Will bulldoze homes of rapists, murderers in Telangana: BJP’s Bandi Sanjay

Will bulldoze homes of rapists, murderers in Telangana: BJP’s Bandi Sanjay

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Wednesday said that anyone who rapes or murders women would have their houses bulldozed if BJP wins the upcoming elections.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Mahila Morcha state executive committee meeting at the party headquarters, Bandi Sanjay said, “If the BJP comes to power in the state, it would pull down the houses of people who resort to murders and rapes of women using bulldozers on the lines of the Uttar Pradesh government.”

“Chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had earlier warned of plucking the eyes of those who perpetrated atrocities against women. But it turned out to be just empty talk. There is no security for women and girls belonging to SCs and STs,” said Sanjay.

He claimed that under the BJP government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was instrumental in making an ST woman the President of India and alleged that under the rule of KCR, a woman is lying on the funeral pyre, referring to the suicide case of the Warangal PG medico, Dr D Preethi.

“There are 12 women ministers in Modi cabinet. Similarly, there are eight women governors and four chief ministers during the Modi regime,” he added.

“I wish more representatives of BJP Mahila Morcha would make it to the state assembly in the next elections. Those who work hard in the party would definitely get the posts and positions,” he said.

Sanjay also questioned the chief minister on his lack of response in the Warangal medico suicide case. “Right from the Jubilee Hills rape case to the death of Dr Preethi, there have been several such incidents. Unfortunately, KCR doesn’t respond or react to even a single incident,” he said.

“For KCR, only his daughter Kavitha represents the entire womenfolk and her organisation has been garnering all the funds,” said the BJP state chief.

Echoing similar sentiments about BRS leader K Kavitha, the national president of Mahila Morcha Vanathi Srinivasan said, “For the chief minister of Telangana, the empowerment of women only means the empowerment of his daughter. But for BJP, the empowerment of each woman is the true empowerment.”

Speaking about YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) leader Y S Sharmila, Bandi Sanjay said, “It is highly unfortunate that the BRS leaders are abusing women leaders like Y S Sharmila in a filthy language. This is against ancient Indian culture, which calls for respecting women like mothers and sisters. A true Indian never insults womenfolk.”

Bandi on Sunday remarked that in the case of Warangal Medico Preethi’s suicide, it is clearly visible that CM KCR is in support of ‘one community’.

Sanjay was indirectly referring to the deceased victim’s senior MA Saif, who belongs to the Muslim community and is the main accused in the case. Sanjay in the past had also referred to the case as a clear case of ‘love jihad’.
