The Israeli occupation authorities demolished 290 Palestinian homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the first quarter of 2023.

This came in a report issued by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the occupied Palestinian territory.

As a result, 413 people—including 194 children—have been forced to flee their homes, while more than 11,000 others have had difficulties with their access to services or their ability to support themselves.

The number of structures targeted in the first quarter of 2023 increased by 46 per cent compared to the same period in 2022, which already saw the highest number of demolitions recorded in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since 2016.

The incident that led to the demolition of most of the buildings took place on February 27 in the town of Livjem in Nablus, when 15 buildings were demolished under the pretext of not having the necessary permits.

It is reported that, the incident that affected the largest number of people occurred on January 23, when the Israeli authorities shut down a water well under construction in Habla (Qalqilya) in Area B, without prior notification.

As a result, a total of 8,000 Palestinians from 1,300 families in three nearby villages were affected.

China banned most Uyghurs praying in mosques, homes during Eid

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Chinese authorities banned most Uyghurs praying in mosques — and even in their homes — during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, in many parts of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, residents and police said, the media reported.

People aged 60 and older were allowed to pray in a local mosque under heavy police surveillance during Eid, Radio Free Asia reported.

Since 2017, China has restricted or banned ethnic customs and religious rituals among the mostly Muslim Uyghurs in an effort to stamp out “religious extremism”, RFA reported.

    MS Education Academy

During this year’s Eid, the most important Muslim holiday, authorities in Xinjiang patrolled city streets and searched houses to prevent people from secretly praying inside their homes, sources said, RFA reported.

An administrative staffer from Yarkowruk town in Akesu Prefecture said one mosque there was open for Eid prayers.

“Our police officers went to the mosque to watch the people,” the employee said. “I don’t know if people needed permission to go to the mosque because I did not go there.”

Likewise, only one mosque was open for Eid prayers in Bulung town, Bay county, an officer at the local police station said, though only residents over 60 years old were allowed to pray if they wanted.

The government issued a notice that people younger than 60 could not pray on the Eid holiday, he added, RFA reported.

Only a dozen Uyghur elders in Bulung attended Eid prayers in a mosque as three police officers and several auxiliary police staffers observed and wrote down the Uyghurs’ names, said the officer from the town’s police station.

“The mosque was open yesterday, and we went there to surveil people,” the police officer said, adding that he told residents under 60 not to go to the mosque.

Homes For Aged Coming Up In All Districts Of Kashmir

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: With many aged parents being abandoned by their children in Kashmir, the government has decided to come up with old age homes in all districts so as to provide shelter to those in need.

Many such homes for the destitute and abandoned senior citizens have already been established in around seven districts of Kashmir.

Mohammad Ashraf Akhoon, deputy director, Social Welfare department Kashmir said that among 10 districts in Kashmir, old age homes have been already started in seven and will be established in the remaining few also very soon.

He further added that there are two types of homes for elderly, daycare and residential. Daycare homes have been set up in some districts and residential in few, he said.

“As of now,  we have good response in day care old age homes with hundreds of senior citizens coming every day; however, the response in residential homes is meager as just few have come in residential old age homes yet,” he said, adding that  residential old age homes have just one or two admissions.”

Maintaining that  daycare homes allow them to express themselves,  Akhoon Ashraf said that elderly people here enjoy each other’s company ,   talk to each other and they get a platform to share ideas with each other.

“The day cares are a good source of recreation for the elderly people of our society who either are abandoned by their children or want to spend some good time at these centers,” Akhoon Ashraf said, adding they are using library, read newspapers, sip tea together and take part in other recreational facilities.

“Anybody who needs shelter in these homes must contact concerned district social welfare officer. They will be admitted in these old age homes immediately,” he said.

Officials told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that given the plight of those ageing parents who have been abandoned by their children in their own homes, old age homes are necessary in Kashmir as well.

  • Israel passes law allowing police to search Palestinian homes without court orders

Israel passes law allowing police to search Palestinian homes without court orders

    [ad_1]

Israeli parliament (Knesset) on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, passed a bill that would allow police officers to storm and search Palestinian homes for illegal weapons without the need for court orders.

The law’s goal is to fight crime in the Arab community, and it will allow police to search Arab buildings without a court order.

According to Haaretz, the provisional rule will be in effect for one year. The law was proposed by lawmakers from the coalition and opposition parties, including the six members from the opposition Yisrael Beiteinu.

The law allows Israeli police to enter and search premises without a court order, although permission from an officer of the rank of superintendent or higher must be obtained.

This operation will be documented according to standard police procedures.

The law also provides for prison terms of up to 10 years as well as fines for those caught with illegal weapons or key parts of weapons.

The penalty is for anyone found guilty of “manufacturing, importing or exporting illegal weapons”. The weapon will also be confiscated.

In this context, lawyer and jurist Moaz Abu Arshaid stresses that “racism lies in the way this law is implemented.”

Abu Arshaid explained, in an interview with Al-Araby from occupied Jerusalem, that “in the past, Israeli soldiers were allowed  to search homes by a judge’s decision, and in rare cases, it was allowed to enter the house, provided that there was a fleeing person inside.”

According to lawyer Abu Arsheed, the new law will apply to everyone under the title “Combating Crime in Arab Society.”

The lawyer also explains that what is dangerous in this law is that it enables the police to enter a person’s home without him being accused or connected to any file.

The move follows a similar law proposed in 2021 by former Israeli Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar that only passed the first Knesset vote.

  • 953 Palestinian homes demolished by Israel in 2022

953 Palestinian homes demolished by Israel in 2022

    [ad_1]

Ramallah: Israeli authorities demolished 953 Palestinian homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 2022, the highest number in seven years, said a European Union (EU) report.

“More than 80 per cent of the demolished buildings are located in Area C, and 28,446 people have been displaced and affected as a result of the demolitions,” said the report issued on Tuesday by the EU mission in the Palestinian territories.

“The demolitions were carried out under the pretext of building without a permit, which is almost impossible for Palestinians to obtain in Area C and East Jerusalem,” the report explained.

It added that the demolitions also included buildings in areas classified as “A” and “B” on “punitive” grounds.

The Oslo accords signed between Israel and Palestine in the 1990s classify the West Bank into three areas: Areas A, B, and C.

Area A is under the full control of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Area B is jointly controlled by the PA and Israel, while Area C is under full Israeli security control.

The EU report said that “101 of the demolished buildings were funded by the EU or its member states at a value of 337,000 euros”.

There was an increase in the number of buildings demolished by their owners in East Jerusalem, upon an Israeli request, from 34 per cent in 2021 to 51 per cent in 2022, it added.

Israeli authorities did not comment on the EU report.

  • JK To Enact Law For Land and Homes For The Poor: LG Sinha

JK To Enact Law For Land and Homes For The Poor: LG Sinha

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Stating that he doesn’t have to contest any election in J&K nor does he indulge in politics, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Sunday said a law will soon be enacted to provide land and homes to a poor lot of the UT.

“I am surprised to see that in J&K there has been no law for providing laws and homes to the poor. J&K administration is working on it and very soon there will be a law enacted in this regard,” the LG said while speaking on the 450th Prakash Utsav of Goswami Shri Guru Nabha Dass Ji Maharaj in Jammu. He said that the poor lot will have better land and housing facilities soon.

He said that the poor will get land and homes too. “Everything will be done for them by the J&K administration,” the LG said. He said the way the administration led by him provided housing facilities to migrant Kashmiri Pandits, similar facilities will be provided to government employees who are non-J&K residents.

“We will ensure that safe and secure accommodation is provided to the employees who belong to other parts of the country and are presently posted in J&K. We know working in Kashmir is a bit challenging,” the LG said.

He said that the administration is committed to converting the dreams of Prime Minister Narendra Modi about J&K into action on the ground.

“I was surprised to see 270 trucks ferrying files of darbar move from Srinagar to Jammu. Today, we are the number one UT in the country to have E-services. We have 450 E-Services, and 102 services under PGSA. Some gaps are being filled by May this year,” he said.

The LG said that there was a time when only 7 km of road was laid in J&K and today the figure is 20 km and 15 km of road is being macadamized daily.

“A lot has changed in the past three years. Under the self-employment scheme and women’s self-help groups, hundreds of youth including young girls were trained to become good entrepreneurs. In every Panchayat, youth are being selected for entrepreneurship training and 20 youth are being trained under skill development program,” he said—(KNO)
