MP: Man declared ‘dead’ due to COVID-19 returns home after 2 years

Dhar: A man whose last rites were performed by his family members after he was declared “dead” due to COVID-19 at a hospital has returned home after two years in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district.
The family members of Kamlesh Patidar, 35, were taken by surprise on Saturday when he knocked the door of his maternal aunt’s house in Karodkala village at around 6 am, almost two years after they performed his last rites, a family member said.
Kamlesh Patidar had fallen ill during the second COVID-19 wave. He was admitted to a hospital and later doctors declared him dead. After the hospital handed over the “body” to them, the family members performed his last rites, his cousin Mukesh Patidar told reporters on Saturday.

“Now, he has returned home but he has not revealed anything about where he stayed during this period,” the cousin said.
Kanwan police station in-charge Ram Singh Rathore said according to the family members, Kamlesh Patidar suffered from the coronavirus infection in 2021 and was admitted to a hospital in Vadodara (Gujarat).
The doctors declared him dead due to COVID-19 infection, following which the family members performed last rites of the body given by the hospital in Vadodara and then returned to their village, he said.
The family members came to know that he was alive when he returned home on Saturday, Rathore said.
The matter will be clear after recording statement of Kamlesh Patidar, the official said.

Kumaraswamy up against tough opponent in home base Channapatna

Bengaluru: Former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who is leading the JD(S) from the front and is countering the campaign blitzkrieg of the Congress and the BJP, is facing stiff competition in Channapatna constituency.
The constituency is set to witness a close fight between Kumaraswamy and BJP leader C.P. Yogeshwara. Channapatna was represented by Yogeshwara in 1999. Later, he won the seat as a Congress candidate in the 2004 and 2008 assembly elections.
After joining the BJP during ‘Operation Lotus’, he lost the by-election in 2009 against JD (S) candidate Ashwath M.C. He managed to win back the seat in the 2011 bypoll as a BJP candidate. In 2013, he contested from the Samajwadi Party (SP) and won against Kumaraswamy’s wife Anita Kumaraswamy. He got 80,099 votes while Anita polled 73,635 votes.

In the 2018 assembly elections Yogeshwara contesting as a BJP candidate, was defeated by Kumaraswamy. Yogeshwara managed to get 66,465 votes and Kumarswamy polled 87,995 votes. Sources said that Kumaraswamy chooses to contest from Channapatna to end the political career of Yogeshwara.
Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy is contesting from the neighbouring Ramnagar constituency.
Channapatna constituency comprises 31 wards of the city. The constituency has 2,17,606 voters. Muslims comprise 42.96 per cent of the voters and Hindus make up 55.66 per cent.
The fight has become a close contest with the BJP high command’s decision to focus on the old Mysuru region. Channapatna, which elected Congress candidates, has become a bastion of the JD (S). Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda’s family has taken it as a matter of prestige to win from here.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have made repeated visits to south Karnataka and appealed to the voters to root out the JD (S), branding it as a party which practices dynastic politics. The party is planning to organize mega rallies and campaigns in the constituency in the coming days.

The results will tell how deep the saffron party has managed to put down roots in south Karnataka. With polarization of votes on the basis of religion following the hijab crisis and the call to boycott Muslim traders, Muslims are standing firmly with the JD (S). Kumaraswamy will attract a major chunk of Vokkaliga votes.
The task of Yogeshwara is to polarize all Hindu votes towards the BJP and keep the Vokkaliga votes intact. Knowing well the uphill task, Yogeshwara had started intense campaigning in the constituency a long time back.
Kumaraswamy is focusing on a state tour and declared that national parties will have to come to his door after the elections. Yogeshwara has proclaimed that he will win against Kumaraswamy.

Capitol Police officer who sought to protect Jan. 6 rioter sentenced to home incarceration

Still, Jackson said Riley’s lengthy career — unblemished before Jan. 6 — his lack of criminal history and the consequences he already suffered, from his forced retirement to the loss of his department-issued dog, justified the sentence of home confinement. Prosecutors had initially sought a sentence of 27 months in prison for Riley’s conduct, saying his status as a police officer exacerbated the seriousness of his actions.
It’s the close of a complicated and wrenching chapter in the arc of Jan. 6 prosecutions. Riley was convicted last year of obstruction of justice for deleting his Facebook messages. The jury deadlocked on a second obstruction charge related to his contact with Hiles.
Riley’s arrest in October 2021 followed intense, but so far unsupported, concerns among members of Congress that some Capitol Police officers may have sympathized with and even assisted the Jan. 6 mob at the Capitol.
Riley is the only officer who has faced charges stemming from his actions following the Jan. 6 attack. There’s no evidence he assisted the mob on Jan. 6 — and in fact the evidence suggests he acted “honorably” in responding to the riot, Jackson emphasized.
Jackson said it was not entirely clear why Riley chose to aid Hiles — and not any other rioter — but said he seemed enamored of Hiles, whom he didn’t know personally before Jan. 6 but who shared a passion for fishing. Riley and Hiles were active in the same social media groups for fishing enthusiasts, and Riley noticed Jan. 7 that Hiles had posted about being inside the Capitol.
He soon struck up a Facebook conversation with Hiles and urged him to delete parts of his posts that mentioned he went inside the building. Investigators, Riley noted, would be searching for and arresting anyone who went inside. Riley maintained contact with Hiles for nearly two weeks, even after he was arrested Jan. 19, 2021. After Hiles told Riley that the FBI seemed interested in their contact, Riley deleted his own communications with Hiles and sent Hiles a concocted excuse to cut off contact.
“Talk about a complete lie,” Jackson said.
The case drew sharply polarized reactions from Riley’s family, friends and colleagues. He retired from the Capitol Police within months of the charges and indicated in court Thursday that many of his former colleagues had cut off contact with him. Aquilino Gonell, a Capitol Police officer who was assaulted by members of the mob Jan. 6 and has become an outspoken advocate for prosecuting members of the mob, called him a “turncoat.”

But Jackson also acknowledged that Riley had a history of heroism on the Capitol Police force, on multiple occasions saving the lives of fellow officers or providing aid amid crisis. He saved the life of a fellow officer who was knocked unconscious during a 2011 blizzard and had stopped breezing. He was also one of the first to respond to a vehicle attack against officers in April 2021 — three months after the Jan. 6 attack — and provided aid to a downed officer, Billy Evans, who later died of his injuries.
Complicating the matter further, Riley is suffering from an undisclosed autoimmune illness that requires complicated treatments, details of which were disclosed to Jackson under seal. She acknowledged the illness in her sentencing and emphasized that he was permitted to leave his home for medical reasons.
