Hyderabad: NEERI holds seminar on hazardous waste management

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) in partnership with Re Sustainability Limited, on Friday hosted a seminar on ‘Invest in Our Planet’ to commemorate World Earth Day, which falls on 22nd April at the Engineering Staff College of India.

Experts and stakeholders from across the country discussed the pressing issue of hazardous waste management and shared their insights and experiences on the latest advancements in waste management practices, including hazardous waste management, resource recovery, circular economy initiatives, and more.

The event comprised three technical and information-intensive sessions on current practices in hazardous waste management, circular economy opportunities in hazardous waste management, and new developments in hazardous waste management- towards sustainable growth, said a press release.

    MS Education Academy

One of the major needs identified was the facilitation of resource waste recovery and transformation of the market by promoting substantial utilization and supplementary use of fuels.

The challenges discussed during the seminar included funding deficiency, lack of focus on waste minimization, and the need for corrective actions to measure performance. The importance of waste minimization was emphasized, and industries were urged to start taking it seriously.

Another significant issue addressed was the prevention of groundwater contamination through sustainable treatment and aquifer remediation. The role of technology in remediation, such as soil retorting and mercury-contaminated site treatment, was also highlighted.

Proper enforcement of waste management regulations was stressed as a critical need to ensure effective and sustainable waste management practices.

Re Sustainability managing director Goutham Reddy said, “India recognized hazardous waste management early on, but progress was slow due to the lack of infrastructure and regulation. The definition of hazardous waste has always been a matter of debate worldwide, starting from the very definition of waste itself. We must work together to find innovative solutions that are sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible.”

Viveka murder case: Andhra CM holds meeting with YSRCP leaders

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday held an emergency meeting with some key leaders of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) to discuss the situation arising out of developments in his uncle Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy’s murder case.

With the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arresting Y.S. Bhaskar Reddy in the four-year-old murder case and summoning his son and Kadapa MP, Y.S. Avinash Reddy, for questioning on Monday, Jagan Mohan Reddy called a meeting to discuss the situation and its likely fallout on the family and the party.

Jagan’s maternal uncle and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) chairman Y. V. Subba Reddy, YSRCP general secretary and government advisor on political affairs Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy, MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy and others attended the meeting held at Jagan’s official residence./

    MS Education Academy

The chief minister on Monday cancelled his visit to Anantapur district in view of Sunday’s developments in the murder case.

MLA Bhaskar Reddy, who was with Avinash Reddy when the latter left for Hyderabad from Pulivendula for appearing before CBI, is believed to have briefed Jagan on the talks he had with the Kadapa MP.

Avinash Reddy anticipates arrest in the case and he has approached Telangana High Court for the anticipatory bail.

The MP, who is a cousin of Jagan Mohan Reddy, had on Sunday found fault with the way the CBI was investigating the case. He alleged that the central agency was ignoring key facts in the case and treating them as accused.

Vivekananda Reddy, paternal uncle of Jagan Mohan Reddy, was murdered at his residence in Pulivendula of Kadapa district on March 15, 2019, a few days before Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

The former minister and MP was the younger brother of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, father of Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The CBI has alleged that Y.S. Bhaskar Reddy and his son Avinash Reddy had hatched a conspiracy to kill Vivekananda Reddy as the latter was not in favour of YSRCP fielding Avinash Reddy as the party candidate for Kadapa Lok Sabha seat.

Bhaskar Reddy is a cousin of Vivekananda Reddy. He is also the maternal uncle of Y.S. Bharati, wife of Jagan Mohan Reddy.

  • Naga political impasse: Centre’s envoy holds separate meetings in Dimapur

Naga political impasse: Centre’s envoy holds separate meetings in Dimapur

    [ad_1]

Kohima: Days after four influential Naga organisations urged the Central government to “honour its word” in the Ceasefire Agreement (1997) and Framework Agreement (2015) and “resolve the Naga political impasse accordingly”, Central government envoy on the Naga political issue A.K. Mishra has held separate meetings with the NSCN-IM and other Naga bodies.

Sources in the know of things said on Friday that Mishra, a retired Intelligence Bureau officer, held separate meetings with a high-level 20-member delegation of the NSCN-IM led by its Secretary General Thuingaleng Muivah and the Naga National Political Groups (NNPG) on Thursday at the Chumoukedima police complex in Dimapur.

NSCN-IM leader Rh Raising Thangkul said that they have reiterated to solve the Naga political issue on the basis of the Framework Agreement, signed in August 2015.

    MS Education Academy

Like previous occasions, Mishra and other leaders of the NSCN-IM and the NNPG did not disclose any details of the closed-door meeting.

In the meetings, Mishra was accompanied by Intelligence Bureau joint director Mandeep Singh Tulli and Nagaland’s intelligence officer Don Jose.

However, an NNPG leader on the condition of anonymity said that they expressed their displeasure on the delay of the decades-old unresolved Naga political issue.

The Centre has been in talks with the NNPGs since 2017.

Four influential Naga organisations, including the powerful Naga Hoho, last week urged the Central government to honour its word in the Ceasefire Agreement (1997) and Framework Agreement (2015) and “resolve the Naga political impasse accordingly”.

The four Naga bodies — the Naga Hoho, the Naga Mothers’ Association, the Naga Students’ Federation, and the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights, in a joint statement had said that the government must “stop its militarisation and military operations”.

“The Naga political conflict cannot be solved militarily and must be solved politically, as admitted by no less than three Indian Army Generals and others,” the statement noted.

The Centre has been holding separate negotiations with the dominant Naga outfit NSCN-IM since 1997 and the NNPG, comprising at least seven groups, since 2017.

A Framework Agreement was signed with NSCN-IM in 2015 and Agreed Position with NNPGs in 2017.

The stalemate continued as the NSCN-IM remained firm on its demand for a separate flag and constitution for the Nagas.

Asad Ahmed’s encounter: BJP holds encounters in name of religion, says Owaisi

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi condemned Uttar Pradesh’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday after Asad Ahmad, an accused in the murder of Umesh Pal, whose father Atiq Ahmad is also mentioned in the case, died in a police encounter.

Speaking in Telangana’s Nizamabad, he questioned whether ‘the BJP (would) also shoot those who killed Junaid and Nasir’, referring to two men reportedly slain by cow vigilantes in February; their burnt remains were discovered in an SUV in Haryana.

“Will the BJP also shoot those who murdered Junaid and Nasir? Will the BJP also carry out encounter killings of individuals responsible for the deaths of Junaid and Nasir? No, because you (the BJP) conduct encounters in the name of religion,” an enraged Owaisi said.
