PM holds massive road-show in Bengaluru as BJP raises poll pitch

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: With just four days left for Assembly polls in Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a massive road show in the city, waving at a large number of enthusiastic crowd, who had lined up on both sides of the route.

The 26 km roadshow from Someshwar Bhavan RBI Ground in Bengaluru South to Malleshwaram’s Sankey Tank, was covered in about three hours.

Modi’s roadshow traversed through parts of south and central Bengaluru, touching about a dozen Assembly segments.

    MS Education Academy

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Bengaluru South MP, Tejasvi Surya and Bengaluru Central MP, P C Mohan.

Standing on the specially designed vehicle, Modi greeted the crowd gathered on the sides of the roads and on nearby buildings, many of whom were seen chanting ‘Modi, Modi’, ‘Jai Bajarangbali’, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ slogans and shouting loud cheers in what appeared to be a “festive atmosphere” in several places.

At many places, people showered flower petals as his cavalcade passed through the stretch slowly, amid sounds of drum beats. The Prime Minister too responded by showering the flower petals gathered on the vehicle, back at the crowd.

Massive arrangements had been made along the stretch, including erecting barricades, to ensure that the roadshow goes on smoothly. Tight security was put in place.

    modi bengaluru

According to state BJP sources, tens of thousands of people had gathered along the roadside.

The entire distance was decked up with saffron hues as BJP flags were seen on either side of the road, and thousands of party workers and supporters too were wearing saffron shawls and caps. Saffron flag, which looked like the ‘Bhagwa flag’ with lord Hanuman’s face on it, was spotted at several places.

Cultural teams were also stationed at different places along the stretch to welcome Modi. A group of women ‘Pourakarmikas’ (civic workers) were seen gathered at a spot to greet Modi.

The much shorter roadshow, about 10 km, between Kempegowda statue at Thippasandra to Trinity circle, will be held on Sunday.
Keeping National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in mind, the BJP on Friday modified Modi’s two-day roadshow in Bengaluru, by scheduling the extensive event today and shorter one on May 7.

The roadshow, earlier scheduled to be held for eight hours on Saturday alone, was split into two parts on Saturday and Sunday to avoid inconvenience to the public.

IYC holds candle-light march in support of protesting wrestlers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) on Friday held a candle-light march here in support of the protesting wrestlers at the Jantar Mantar, criticising the BJP-led government at the Centre.

“Beti Bachao slogan is just hypocrisy. The behaviour with the women players of the country at Jantar Mantar is very shameful. In fact, the BJP has never shied away from torturing the daughters of India,” IYC president Srinivas B.V. said.

Hundreds of IYC activists took out a candle march to demand justice for the pride of the country’s women wrestlers. However, Delhi Police stopped them near their office.

    MS Education Academy

IYC national in-charge and AICC joint secretary Krishna Allavaru also slammed the government over the alleged manhandling of the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar.

“What has happened to women sportspersons at Jantar Mantar is sad. The country is deeply saddened to see the tears of women sportspersons who have brought medals for the country and their families with their hard work and dedication. BJP has a history of protecting perpetrators and questioning victims,” he said.

Allavaru also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi clicks photographs when these wrestlers win medals “but now he is forcing them to cry”.

“For the last 14 days, the daughters of the country have been crying and suffering, but the government is silent.”

He further said that the Congress stands firmly with the daughters of the country and will stand with them till the last breath.

He also demanded BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is also the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), be arrested by the Delhi Police so that a fair investigation could be conducted.

  • UN envoy to Yemen holds constructive talks with Houthi militia

UN envoy to Yemen holds constructive talks with Houthi militia

    [ad_1]

Sanaa: UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg announced that he had “positive engagements” with the Houthi militia in capital Sanaa, calling on concerning parties to take bold steps to end the years-long war in the country.

Speaking to reporters after concluding his two-day talks, Grundberg said the discussions were “frank, detailed and constructive”, reports Xinhua news agency.

He said he was encouraged by the “positive and constructive atmosphere” and looked forward to holding further talks with the rebel group, Yemen’s internationally recognised government, as well as Saudi Arabia and Oman.

    MS Education Academy

“Moving forward, any agreement needs to deliver tangible benefits for all Yemenis. It should durably stop the violence through a cease-fire that ensures the safety of the Yemeni people,” Grundberg said, adding that any agreement should pave the way for an “inclusive, Yemeni-owned political process under the UN auspices”.

The UN envoy called for increasing aid access through the Sanaa airport and Hodeidah ports, resuming oil exports, and opening key roads.

After a year of relative calm in Yemen, Grundberg urged all sides to take “bold steps” to end the conflict that has ravaged the country for over eight years.

Grundberg arrived in Sanaa on Monday to meet with high-ranking leaders of the Houthi group.

The envoy’s visit comes after two diplomatic delegations from Oman and Saudi Arabia visited the city in early April and held direct talks with Houthi representatives, which the militia described as “serious and positive” and made progress on some issues.

Yemen has been embroiled in a years-long military conflict after the Houthi militia took control of several northern cities and ousted the government from Sanaa in 2014.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in a staggering number of casualties and has plunged the Arab world’s poorest country into humanitarian crises, including widespread famine.
