Eastern Ladakh row: India, China hold 18th round of military talks

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India and China held a fresh round of high-level military talks on Sunday with a focus on resolving the remaining issues in eastern Ladakh as the border row enters the fourth year, people familiar with the matter said.

The 18th round of military talks took place ahead of Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu’s visit to India next week to attend a key meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation being hosted by New Delhi under its presidency of the grouping.

Sunday’s military talks came around four months after the last round of the dialogue between the senior Army commanders of the two sides.

    MS Education Academy

The talks were held at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, the people familiar with the developments said.

It is learnt that the Indian side insisted on resolving the issues at the remaining friction points of Demchok and Depsang in eastern Ladakh as soon as possible.

The Indian delegation at the dialogue was led by Lt Gen Rashim Bali, Commander of the Leh-based 14 Corps that takes care of security along the LAC in the Ladakh sector.

In line with a decision taken at the 16th round of military talks, the two sides carried out disengagement from Patrolling Point 15 in the Gogra-Hotsprings area in September last year.

The Corps Commander-level talks were instituted to resolve the eastern Ladakh row. India has been maintaining that its ties with China cannot be normal unless there is peace in the border areas.

The eastern Ladakh border standoff erupted on May 5, 2020 following a violent clash in the Pangong lake area.

The ties between the two countries nosedived significantly following the fierce clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades.

As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process on the north and south banks of the Pangong Lake and in the Gogra area.

Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz hold ‘positive’ meeting with Saudi Crown Prince

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif and PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Friday met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, according to a media report.

During the meeting, both sides discussed the current issues being faced by Pakistan and the solutions to them in detail, Geo News reported.

According to sources, the meeting between former Prime Minister Sharif and the Crown Prince was positive.

    MS Education Academy

Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz are currently in Saudi Arabia where they performed Umrah along with their other family members.

The Sharif family reached Saudi Arabia on April 11. The PML-N chief is visiting Saudi Arabia after six years, Geo News reported.

Sources told The News that Sharif had initially planned to stay in Saudi Arabia till April 26, but his son Hussain Nawaz and his family had requested him to prolong his stay in Jeddah at his residence.

According to sources, Sharif might also hold a meeting with the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz, in Jeddah.

Earlier this month, sources had claimed Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud invited Sharif who is considered closer to the royal family and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the Kingdom to perform Umrah as a gesture of goodwill, Geo News reported.

Shehbaz Sharif had told the lower house of the Parliament earlier this month that Saudi Arabia has provided another $2 billion to Pakistan in order to bolster the country’s foreign exchange reserves, The Express Tribune reported.

In January, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Syed Asim Munir, had met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries.

Shah to hold road shows, organisational meetings in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In his first political programmes in Karnataka after nomination filing ends on Thursday, Home Minister Amit Shah will hold road shows in Davanagere and Devanahalli on April 21 and 22 and attend several organisational meetings in Bengaluru as the BJP’s campaign to retain power in the state goes into a higher gear.

Party sources said Shah will be in the state between April 20-23 and will leave for Telangana on the last day to attend political programmes in Telangana’s Chevella Lok Sabha seat.

Shah’s road shows are expected to give a fillip to the party’s mass connect in Karnataka.

    MS Education Academy

His several meetings with the state party leaders tasked to spearhead the campaign are expected to fine-tune the poll strategy.

The 224-member assembly is scheduled for the polls on May 10.

The Congress is the main challenger to the BJP in the high-stakes elections in which the Janata Dal (Secular) is also an important player.

Israeli judicial reforms still on hold, Netanyahu says

    [ad_1]

    israel politics 24931

Speaking to Todd, Netanyahu said that even though he’s not resuming his efforts now, his goal remains the same, limiting judicial overreach and balancing the branches of government.

“We’re trying to bring it back into a proper balance,” he said.

Opponents of Netanyahu’s plan have said the proposed changes would undermine the nation’s basic freedoms. “It’s an attack on the very soul and nature of our democracy,“ former Prime Minister Ehud Barak said last month.

During the “Meet the Press” interview, Netanyahu criticized Todd for how he described his proposed reforms and Israel’s current political environment — and also took umbrage at Todd’s question linking the judicial plan to Netanyahu’s personal legal problems.

“Here’s another fib, another lie. It’s just not true. My own legal proceedings, which by the way are crumbling, all these charges against me have been crumbling,” Netanyahu said, adding: “My case is completely independent from this.”

The prime minister also said he still felt close to President Joe Biden (“a great friend of Israel”) despite Biden’s concerns about the proposed judicial reforms.

“Friends can have disagreements on occasion,” Netanyahu said.

TN CM Stalin welcomes Centre’s decision to hold CAPF exams in state languages

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday said he ‘wholeheartedly’ welcomed the decision by the Ministry of Home Affairs to conduct the examinations for recruitment of constables in the Central Armed Police Force in state languages.

He reiterated his demand to provide question papers in Tamil and other state languages in all union government examinations.

“As a result of my letter to (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah, the Union Government has announced that it would conduct the CAPF exams in all state languages,” Stalin said on micro-blogging site on Saturday.

    MS Education Academy

“I wholeheartedly welcome this decision and reiterate our demand to provide question papers in Tamil and other state languages in all Union government exams,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Home Ministry approved the conduct of constable (general duty) examination for CAPF in 13 regional languages, in addition to Hindi and English.

Last week, Stalin had shot off a letter to Shah stating that the Ministry’s decision to hold the examinations in English and Hindi amounts to ‘blatant discrimination’ and denies equality of opportunity to non-hindi speaking states.

The chief minister had urged the Home Minister to immediately revise the notification to include Tamil and other state languages.

After calls from south, Centre to hold CAPF exam in regional languages

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: After calls from Southern India to conduct the CAPF exams in regional languages and not just in Hindi and English, the Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the conduct of constable (general duty) examination for Central Armed Police Forces in 13 regional languages, in addition to Hindi and English.

The historic decision has been taken at the initiative of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to give impetus to the participation of local youths in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and encourage regional languages, an official statement said.

The CAPFs are the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the National Security Guard (NSG).

    MS Education Academy

“In a landmark decision under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, (the) Ministry of Home Affairs has approved conducting constable (general duty) examination for CAPFs in 13 regional languages, in addition to Hindi and English,” it said.

In addition to Hindi and English, the question paper will be set in 13 regional languages — Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Odia, Urdu, Punjabi, Manipuri and Konkani.

The announcement comes days after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin wrote to Shah, calling him to include Tamil as a language for the written exam in the recruitment for CRPF personnel. Telangana minister KT Rama Rao had urged Amit Shah regarding the same.

In his letter, Stalin said that in the notification for the CRPF recruitment written exam, it was mentioned that the test could be taken in English and Hindi.

  • Kerala: Hindu temples hold mass iftars during Ramzan

Kerala: Hindu temples hold mass iftars during Ramzan

    [ad_1]

Two temple committees in Malappuram organised a huge Iftar for Muslims during the holy month of Ramzan, serving as an example of interfaith peace.

On April 7 and March 28, respectively, committees of the Sree Puthuveppu Manaliyarkavu Bhagavathi temple in Othalur and the Chathangadu Sree Maha Vishnu temple in Vaniyannur in Tirur staged the mass Iftar on the premises of the respective temple grounds.

According to a report by the TNIE, Muslims in large numbers participated in both gatherings.

    MS Education Academy

“It was an initiative taken by a group of youngsters in the area. Our aim is to strengthen the bond between people from the Hindu and Muslim communities. Religious harmony is important and we want to celebrate every festival together in a peaceful and jovial atmosphere,” the report quoted Krishnan Pavittapuram, secretary of the Sree Puthuveppu Manaliyarkavu Bhagavathi temple.

Dijith K, one of the event’s organisers, said that a member of the Muslim community sponsored the annadanam during the temple’s annual installation celebration, which this year coincided with Ramadan. “We will continue to organise the mass Iftar in the coming years,” Dijith said.

For Chathangadu Sree Maha Vishnu Temple, this is the second iftar.

“Like the previous year, people from the Muslim community could not attend the annadanam this year as our annual installation festival fell during the Ramzan month. So, we organised the mass Iftar a day after the annual festival. We will organise it next year if the date of the annual installation festival falls during Ramzan month,” said Lakshmanan K K, temple committee secretary.

Panakkad Rasheed Ali Shihab Thangal, an IUML leader who attended the Vaniyannur Iftar, praised the temple’s decision.

“The temple has set a model for others to follow. All communities should live in harmony in the country. We should move forward while respecting and helping each other. There should be no space for hatred in our hearts,” he said.

  • HC junks PIL challenging UP govt’s move to hold religious events during Navratri

HC junks PIL challenging UP govt’s move to hold religious events during Navratri

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court has dismissed a PIL challenging the state government’s decision allocating Rs 1 lakh to each district to hold religious events during Navratri and Ram Navami festivals and pay honorarium to artistes.

Upholding the Yogi Adityanath government’s decision to pay honorarium to the performers at the programmes organised at temples, the Lucknow bench of high Court has held that this does not amount to indulgence of the state in propagation of any religion or religious denomination.

In fact it is a simple secular activity of the state while it indulges in publicising the developmental work undertaken by the state, the court said.

    MS Education Academy

A bench of Justices D K Upadhyaya and O P Shukla dismissed the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Motilal Yadav challenging the state government’s March 10, 2023 decision whereby it had allocated Rs 1 lakh to each district on the occasion of Ram Navami.

The court’s order was passed on March 22 but was uploaded on its website on Tuesday only.

In its order, the bench also observed, “If the state spends some money out of the taxes collected by it from the citizens and appropriates some amount for providing some conveniences or facilities to any religious denomination, it will not be violative of Article 27 of the Constitution of India.”

“We have to always keep in mind that there exits a clear line of distinction between a secular activity and religious activity which may be undertaken by the State, like providing conveniences and facilities and indulgence of a State in maintenance and propagation of religion or religious denomination,” added the bench.

Saying that the petitioner had misunderstood the state government’s order, the bench observed, “The Government order does not make any provision for payment of any amount to any person, be it a priest in a temple or anyone else associated with the activities of the temple; rather, the amount is to be paid to the performers or artisans who may be performing on such occasions.”
