As terror outfits run amok, funding squeeze hits Pakistan counter-terrorism plan

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistan’s dismal economic condition and its struggle to meet the demands of the International Monetary Fund (OMF), imposing taxes, increasing rate of inflation and snowballing petroleum prices have not only forced the Shehbaz Sharif-led government to introduce an austerity drive, but have also affected the capability and capacity of the military establishment to launch a counter-terrorism offensive.

The country’s military establishment has been asked by the government to provide a plan on how they can cut their non-combat expenditure, given the nature of the severe economic crisis.

Experts say that while terrorism and groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and others continue to carry out coordinated attacks in different parts of the country, the military establishment is not in a position to launch a counter-terrorism offensive, which can be allocated with enough financial assistance to sustain it.

It would also not be wrong to maintain that terror groups, who are re-organising in different parts of the country, are also aware that they have the leverage, time and space as the military establishment may keep itself limited to IBOs (Intelligence Based Operations) or small scaled offensives, due to its bad financial conditions.

In view of the current situation of the country, experts believe that launching a military offensive may just not be possible for the military establishment.

“Pakistan’s armed forces and its intelligence agencies are well aware of the country’s financial situation. And they would not find themselves in a position to launch operations like ‘Zarb-e-Azb’ and ‘Raddul Fasad’ to root out terrorists from its soil,” said senior analyst Javed Siddique.

“And the fact that Pakistan’s financial problems hinder the way of an all-out counter-terrorism operation by the armed forces, our neighboring Afghanistan and the Taliban regime there, along with the Pakistani Taliban can continue to enjoy each other’s support and try to make full use of this vulnerable financial condition of the country,” he added.

However, other military experts say that the resurgence of terrorism in the country does not need an all-out offensive and can be tackled through small scale operations as the militant groups have not yet been able to establishment themselves inside Pakistan and are using various sleeper cells for coordination and implementation of their terror plans.

“Pakistan armed forces have foiled tons of terror attack attempts, nabbed hundreds of TTP militants through ongoing IBOs (Intelligence Based Operations) and would continue to do so in the coming days as well,” said an official with knowledge of the ongoing military operations.

“We are well aware of our limitations and are also aware that Pakistan’s financial condition is not normal. But we should not forget that these financial gaps should not allow terrorism to prosper, and the armed forces are doing everything to ensure that terrorists do not get a single easy breath on Pakistani soil.”

MP: 14 dead as cement truck hits 3 parked buses; sixty injured

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: The death toll in the accident in which a cement-laden truck hit three buses parked on the side of a road on the Rewa-Satna border in Madhya Pradesh has gone up to 14, which also left at least 60 persons injured, officials said on Saturday.

The accident occurred around 9 pm on Friday outside a tunnel near Barkhada village and people in the buses were returning from the ‘Kol Mahakumbh’ in Satna city, they said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had addressed the event in Satna earlier on Friday on the occasion of Shabri Mata Jayanti.

“Fourteen persons were killed and 60 others were injured. Of the injured persons, the condition of three is very serious,” Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Dr Rajesh Rajora told PTI.

Talking to reporters after meeting the injured persons at the Rewa Medical College Hospital late Friday night, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the cement-laden truck hit three buses parked on the roadside as it veered off following a tyre burst.

Because of the impact of the collision a bus fell on one side, while another one overturned on the other side causing injuries to the passengers, he said.

Terming the incident as “very unfortunate”, Chouhan said that if necessary, patients will be airlifted outside Rewa for better treatment.

The chief minister announced a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of those killed in the accident, and also said that government jobs will also be offered to the kin of the deceased persons.

Those who suffered serious injuries will be given Rs 2 lakh, while other injured will be offered Rs one lakh compensation.

Benefits of several welfare schemes will also be given to the kin of the deceased, he said.

Eyewitnesses said that the truck hit the buses from behind and one of the buses overturned and fell into a ditch.
The accident took place near Mohania tunnel around 9 pm when the buses had stopped for distribution of food packets to the passengers returning after attending the Mahakumbh, they said.

Rajora said top officials, including collectors and superintendents of police of Sidhi and Rewa districts reached the spot.

Chouhan has directed officials to supervise the treatment of the injured persons and asked them to keep the Rewa Medical College and Sidhi District Hospital on alert, he said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed grief over the accident in a tweet.

Mohua Moitra hits back at Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Trinamool-BJP’ comment

    [ad_1]

Shillong: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Thursday hit back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for calling her party the BJP’s “B team”.

Talking to reporters her, she said: “The monopoly of national parties in the country’s politics has ended.”

She asserted that there would be no chance for democracy in India if Trinamool was forced to rely on a two-party system.

“The Trinamool has fought the CPI-M for the previous 34 years, and we won West Bengal for the third time in a row,” she said.

Moitra also took a pot-shot on the recent war of words between the state’s ruling National People’s Party and its former ally, the BJP.

“Today (Chief Minister) Conrad Sangma might say something negative about (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah, and the Union Minister may respond to this. But once the election is over, they will be brothers again,” she said, urging voters not to fall in the trap of NPP and BJP.

“Despite the NPP-BJP combine in the state, Meghalaya did not witness development in the last five years.”

According to Moitra, her Trinamool is there to provide a good alternative to the people of Meghalaya.

  • 3 dead, over 600 injured after new quake hits Turkey

3 dead, over 600 injured after new quake hits Turkey

    [ad_1]

Ankara: Three people are now confirmed to have died after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey on Monday, weeks after a deadly quake devastated the region.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu also said 213 people had been injured.

Turkey’s disaster and emergency agency Afad said the tremor occurred at 20:04 local time (17:04 GMT), the BBC reported.

A 7.8-magnitude quake struck the same area on February 6, killing more than 44,000 people in Turkey and Syria.

Those killed by Monday’s tremor were found in Antakya, Defne, and Samandagi, Soylu said, urging people not to enter potentially dangerous buildings.

Turkish authorities have recorded more than 6,000 aftershocks since the February 6 earthquake hit, but the BBC’s team in the region said the latest tremor felt much stronger than previous ones.

Monday’s earthquake hit near the Turkey-Syria border, and the White Helmets civil defence group said more than 100 people were injured in Syria, with buildings collapsing and widespread panic, the BBC reported.

The Syrian American Medical Society Foundation said that five of its hospitals received at least 30 people with injuries from the latest earthquake, but added that damage to its medical facilities “appears to be minimal”.

The earthquake was also reportedly felt in Egypt and Lebanon.

There is fear and panic in Turkey as small aftershocks keep coming. Lines of ambulances and rescue crews are trying to get to some of the worst affected areas where the walls of badly damaged buildings have collapsed.

A number of structures that were left standing after the tremor on February 6 have now crumbled, including a bridge. Many cracks in roads have become deep scars making it more difficult for the emergency services to get where they may be needed.

An AFP journalist reported on scenes of panic in Antakya, the capital of Hatay province which was already devastated by the previous earthquake — with the latest tremors raising clouds of dust in the city.

The walls of badly damaged buildings also crumbled, AFP reports, with several apparently injured people calling for help.

In a tweet, Afad initially urged people to stay away from coastlines as a precaution against the risk of rising sea levels, although the warning was later removed.
