  • Power lies in hands of one family: BJP’s DK Aruna hits out at CM KCR

Power lies in hands of one family: BJP’s DK Aruna hits out at CM KCR

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Alleging CM K Chandrashekar Rao of misuse of power, Bharatiya Janata Party National Vice President DK Aruna on Thursday claimed that police cases are being registered against those who stand against the KCR-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi government in Telangana.

“In Telangana, entire power lies in the hands of one family & they (BRS) think that all are like them. Here, police cases are being registered against those who stand against BRS,” D K Aruna claimed.

#WATCH | In Telangana, entire power lies in hands of one family & they (BRS) think that all are like them. Here, police cases are being registered against those who stand against BRS, their livelihood being destroyed. This is the habit of BRS not BJP: D K Aruna, BJP National VP pic.twitter.com/r5BseRNhtP

    — ANI (@ANI) March 9, 2023

Aruna said that K Kavitha is staging a protest at Jantar Mantar against the women’s reservation bill on March 10 and here in Telangana, we are also staging a protest at the BJP party office against the “harassment of women” and “ragging of girls” in colleges in the state.

Earlier in the month, Telangana BJP leader N Ramchander Rao said that Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao should protect women in his state before her daughter K Kavitha demanded women’s reservation bill for the country.

“It is very surprising that Kavitha speaks of the women reservation bill in the Parliament while her own father has not given a single ministry to a woman in the first term of his tenure.

How is a woman being respected in this state? The woman governor is being humiliated and harassed by their (BRS) government and she (Kavitha) speaks of women’s reservations” he had said.

Aruna accused CM KCR of maintaining silence on the alleged cases of atrocities against women.
“The government is not taking any interest in the welfare of the women who are facing many atrocities. CM doesn’t speak a word or give assurances to them,” Aruna took a dig at the KCR government.

Telangana BJP leader had stated that the decision to protest outside Jantar Mantar on the women’s reservation bill is just an election gimmick and there is nothing more to it.

“This is all just to woo the women voters who will never believe in the BRS party because the majority of the women have suffered, law and order have deteriorated and atrocities against women have increased in the BRS regime,” he had added.

Watch: Jason Roy Hits 145 Off 63 As Quetta Gladiators Chase Down 241 Against Peshawar Zalmi In PSL

Quetta Gladiators chased down a target of 241 runs against Peshawar Zalmi in a run-fest in the Pakistan Super League on Wednesday.

It was Babar Azam’s 115 off 65 that helped Zalmi post a daunting total of 240 for 2 in 20 overs. In the first half, it seemed that the game was all but over for Gladiators, but then Jason Roy happened. The right-handed England batter tore apart the opponent’s bowling attack with his masterclass 145 not out off only 63 balls. His innings was laced with 20 fours and 5 sixes as Gladiators successfully completed the third-highest chase ever in T20 cricket history with 10 balls to spare.

Peshawar Zalmi won the toss and opted to bat first at the Pindi Club Ground in Rawalpindi. Peshawar skipper Babar Azam led from the front, smashing 115 off only 65 balls, with the aid of 15 fours and three sixes.

Jason Roy made 145 not out from just 63 balls as Quetta Gladiators chased down 241, the third-highest successful run chase of all time in T20 cricket against Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL.

  • BJP’s TN chief Annamalai hits out at ally AIADMK for admitting ex-party leaders

BJP’s TN chief Annamalai hits out at ally AIADMK for admitting ex-party leaders

    [ad_1]

Chennai: BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit President K. Annamalai, rattled by the back-to-back resignations of party functionaries who went on to join the AIADMK, on Tuesday lashed out at his ally.

Accusing the AIADMK of poaching BJP leaders, he tweeted: “If I decide to go shopping (poaching), my shopping list will be big. But the time and venue, I will decide”.

He also said that the presence of a former Chief Minister, while second-, third-, fourth-, and fifth-level BJP leaders were joining the AIADMK was a message that the BJP has grown in Tamil Nadu.

Earlier the BJP used to poach from the Dravidian parties for it to grow, but presently Dravidian parties were poaching from the BJPA for their growth, he alleged.

In a hard-hitting statement on Twitter, he said: “Before the Kurukshetra war, people were allowed to change camps. The war which will start in a few months from now, let everyone take positions.”

The former IPS officer said that his aim was to bring his party to power in Tamil Nadu, adding that he was not a BJP manager but a BJP leader.

BJP’s Tamil Nadu IT cell President C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar quit the BJP on Sunday and joined the AIADMK in the presence of its interim General Secretary K. Palaniswami. On Monday, BJP IT cell state Secretary, Dilip Kannan also resigned from the saffron party only to join the AIADMK on Tuesday along with a few other state leaders.

BJP state leader and actor Gayathri Raghuram quit in December 2022, to protest the “dictatorial attitude” of Annamalai. BJP OBC Morcha leader Tiruchi Surya who is the son of DMK leader Tiruchi Siva, also quit the party.

Sources in the BJP told IANS that several leaders were antagonised by the style of functioning of Annamalai ever since he has become the state President.

  • Chips’ inventory-to-sales ratio hits 26-yr high amid poor demand

Chips’ inventory-to-sales ratio hits 26-yr high amid poor demand

    [ad_1]

Seoul: Inventory of South Korean chipmakers has increased to a nearly 26-year high in January, data showed Sunday, reflecting the sluggish global demand amid the economic uncertainties.

The inventory-to-sales ratio of chips came to 265.7 per cent in January, the highest since 288.7 per cent posted in March 1997, according to the data compiled by Statistics Korea.

A higher ratio generally indicates that companies are facing more hurdles in selling their products, although the figure may rise when manufacturers stock up for large shipments, reports Yonhap news agency.

A rise in the ratio may also induce chipmakers to reduce production or lower prices further to maintain sales.

Exports of semiconductors, the country’s key export item, dived 42.5 per cent to $5.96 billion in February from a year earlier amid the downcycle of the semiconductor industry.

With Asia’s No. 4 economy depending highly on the chip industry, South Korea’s exports fell for the fifth consecutive month in February, sinking 7.5 per cent on-year to $50.1 billion.

The country’s overall outbound shipments, meanwhile, edged up 0.8 per cent over the period, when excluding chips, separate data from the trade ministry showed earlier.

Last week, Finance Minister Choo Kyung-ho called for the National Assembly to promptly pass a bill on providing more tax incentives to chipmakers amid the prolonged downturn in exports.

Under the proposed tax code revision, the government will apply a higher tax credit rate of 15 per cent on facility investment in the chip industry for conglomerates, which is above the revision of 8 per cent passed at Parliament in December.

  • Pakistan inflation hits all-time high

    Pakistan inflation hits all-time high

    [ad_1]

Karachi: Pakistan’s annual inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), soared to a record high of 31.55 percent in February, compared to 27.6 percent in the previous month, driven by massive increases in food and transport prices, local media reported.

According to Arif Habib Corporation, this is the highest-ever CPI increase based on data available from July 1965, Dawn reported.

In February, 2022, inflation clocked in at 12.2 percent.

According to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), inflation in urban and rural areas increased to 28.82 percent and 35.56 percent year-on-year respectively.

On a month-on-month basis, inflation rose 4.32 percent.

Consumer prices have risen sharply over the past several months, with annual inflation staying above 20 percent since June last year, Dawn reported.

In February, the increase in inflation was driven by a double-digit rise in all sub-indices except one.

The inflation figure is higher than the Ministry of Finance’s forecast of 30 percent.

The CPI-based inflation on a year-on-year basis will be 28-30pc in coming months, said the ministry in its monthly economic update & outlook for February, adding that the recent political and economic uncertainties were pushing up inflationary expectations.

The ministry expects inflation to remain high due to the uncertain political and economic environment, pass-through of currency depreciation, rise in energy prices and increase in administered prices in February, Dawn reported.

Although the State Bank of Pakistan has been enacting contractionary monetary policy, the inflationary expectation would take some time to settle. The Centre, in liaison with provincial governments, is closely monitoring the demand-supply gap of essential items and taking necessary measures to stabilise their prices, the report added.

Almost out of La La Land: Garcetti nom hits a make or break moment

    [ad_1]

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was noncommittal when asked Tuesday about Garcetti. But the coming hearing before the Foreign Relations Committee has brought a sudden uptick in confidence among Garcetti allies inside and out of the administration who have spent more than a year trying to build support for him in the chamber.

“I think we have to take a vote, I think he has the votes. I think there will be senators that use all of their rights to delay the nomination but my sense is he’s going to get confirmed,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) told POLITICO. “He’s been actively working, the White House and State Department have been working. We just had other priorities.”

Garcetti’s uncertain fate signals the beginning of a rare rough patch between Biden and the Democratic-run Senate chamber. So far, in his presidency, the White House has only seen a handful of nominees withdrawn. But other picks are sparking controversy, with some Democrats concerned over a current Biden circuit court pick due to his handling of a school sexual assault case. And the president’s pick to lead the Federal Aviation Administration is up in the air after Sen. Ted Cruz demanded that the chamber hold off on considering him.

None of those nominees, however, have been as high profile or gone on as long as Garcetti. He once seemed destined for a plum gig in the Biden administration after representing one of the 2020 campaign’s most prominent supporters. Allegations that he was aware of sexual assault and harassment accusations made by some on his staff against his former top political adviser, Rick Jacobs, have complicated that glide path.

While Garcetti has repeatedly denied knowledge of those allegations, some Republicans led by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) concluded that he was aware — or should have been aware — of them. Meanwhile, Garcetti has spent considerable sums of money on lobbyists to rally support for his cause and push back against critics of his nomination who have been in touch frequently with senators urging them to reject him.

“Any support in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for this nominee is a bitter pill to swallow for all those who believe that enabling and covering up sexual harassment and abuse should be disqualifying for public office in America,” said Libby Liu, the chief executive of Whistleblower Aid. “The evidence is clear that he is unfit to represent our country anywhere in the world, and especially to the world’s largest democracy with a deeply troubled record on gender-based violence.”

Garcetti himself has been meeting with key officials and focusing on locking up support from Republican senators. His parents have hired a lobbyist to help shepherd the nomination. And the blitz seems to be making inroads with some in that audience.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said she had “an excellent meeting” with Garcetti on Monday. “He clearly is very knowledgeable about India and we talked about the allegations that he was not sufficiently attentive to the sexual harassment allegations against one of his employees,” she said, adding that she wants to look at the Grassley report before making a final decision.

“I don’t think applying the standard of ‘should have known’ is fair,” Collins said. “If there’s evidence that he did know then that’s different. And that’s what I need to sort out. But I was impressed with him.”

Biden officials and Garcetti himself have been leaning into the argument that the U.S. has gone far too long without a top diplomat in India. But it’s unclear how far that pitch will go.

“We know it’s an important post, we need another nominee,” said Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), who had previously raised issues with the nomination. “It’s not just Republicans, there are Democrats too who are wavering on their support for Garcetti because of past actions in the office.”

Indeed, Democrats and others close to the process said they anticipate resistance and some nominal opposition to Garcetti’s nomination from within his party should it come to the floor. Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) said he’s read through Grassley’s report and remains concerned about Garcetti, adding that he has not spoken to the White House about it. Kelly, who has rebuffed Democratic powerbrokers’ attempts to influence his decision, is not expected to support the nomination.

Other Democrats declined to say where they stood should he come to the floor, with several contending they were still researching the matter.

“Some of the issues I want to go over and see how much culpability or responsibility is with him in regards to the sexual harassment,” said Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

But Garcetti’s pick has dragged on so long that some senators — including at least one who for months had made her concerns known — conceded in interviews that they simply wanted it all to be over with.

“I’m ready to move on,” said Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), who will back Garcetti. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) also indicated Tuesday that she’ll support Garcetti.

In addition to Garcetti, Republicans have also made former New Hampshire Attorney General Michael Delaney’s nomination to the First Circuit Court of Appeals a primary focus. Specifically, they have criticized Delaney’s representation of St. Paul’s School in a school sexual assault case and his decision to file a motion that would have only allowed the plaintiff, who was a minor, to remain anonymous if she agreed not to speak about the case publicly.

Delaney maintains staunch support from his home-state Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, as well as the White House. His backers cite support from trial attorneys who have represented plaintiffs of sexual and violent crimes, as well as endorsements from former President Barack Obama’s director of the office on violence against women and the former director of New Hampshire’s attorney general’s office of victim/witness assistance.

Still, Senate Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said he’s reviewing Delaney’s record. And Sen. Richard Blumenthal
(D-Conn.), a member of the committee, said he hasn’t reached a decision yet on whether he’ll support Delaney, adding that he’s waiting for the nominee’s answers to written questions.

“I have concerns about the questions that have been raised about his tactics during one of the litigations and other potential issues,” the Connecticut Democrat said.

The White House reiterated in a statement that Delaney has a strong track record of upholding the rule of law, including taking action to protect vulnerable victims.

  • VP Dhankar hits out at BBC documentary, George Soros

VP Dhankar hits out at BBC documentary, George Soros

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar hit out at the “narrative set afloat” against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hungarian-American businessman critic George Soros, on Tuesday saying those who play politics the other way around need to be combated, neutralised and must face rational questioning.

Dhankar said India has a robust legal system where things are realised for the high and mighty, including the Prime Minister.

“For two decades, the issue was deliberated in judicial quarters, thoroughly investigated at all levels. The highest court of the land, the highest court of the largest democracies pronounced on all fronts in 2022 finally, and we have a narrative being set afloat by a documentary, some people say this is expression,” the VP said in an apparent reference to the BBC documentary on Narendra Modi.

“So in the name of expression can you run down the Supreme Court, can you run down two decades of thorough investigation? This is playing politics the other way around. When people choose to play politics the other way around, the young minds here and outside are intellectually equipped to challenge them,” he said while addressing the students after inaugurating the Centre for Innovation at IIT Madras here.

The controversial BBC documentary titled “India: The Modi Question” pertains to the 2002 Gujarat riots when Modi was the chief minister of that state.

Without mentioning names, he said “there is one gentleman somewhere using some money power, he has some backers, he has some beneficiaries, he has some fiscal parasites and they talk about our country’s democracy. I have been appalled, pained, how can a sane mind compare us with a southern country without neighbours?”

He appealed to the students to be on guard and vindicate the trust of the founding fathers, if they have to take this country to 2047.

“Those who play politics the other way around needs to be combated, neutralised and they must face your rational questioning,” Dhankar said.

The Sudha and Shankar Innovation Hub is IIT Madras’ first architect-designed built space dedicated to student-led activities funded by alumni and the government.

The new facility was inaugurated in the presence Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi, IIT Madras director, V Kamakoti, and founder, CAMS Pvt. Ltd V Shankar.

It is dedicated to supporting and encouraging Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) activities of the students and researchers.
Besides CFI, the Sudha and Shankar Innovation Hub also hosts Nirmaan, a pre-incubator that supports to convert student-led technology projects into successful start-ups.
