Here’s who misses checks if the U.S. hits the debt brink in June

    [ad_1]

While its far from certain how, exactly, the Treasury Department would handle a default — including whether it would prioritize certain payments or delay paying the government’s bills — the think tank noted that about $50 billion in Social Security benefits are set to go out in the first half of June, in addition to more than $20 billion in payments to Medicaid providers, $6 billion in federal salaries, $12 billion in veterans benefits and $1 billion in SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps.

And those hugely significant payments are just a few that could be affected, the Bipartisan Policy Center cautioned, and don’t represent an “exhaustive” list “of all cash flows on a particular day.”

The Biden administration has already dismissed the untested idea of paying some bills but not others, arguing that it would be unfair to average Americans, cause widespread economic disruption and prove logistically impossible. A more likely scenario, in the event of a default, is that Treasury would choose to delay all bills, waiting until there’s enough revenue to cover all payments for any given day, the Bipartisan Policy Center said.

The think tank’s new projection piles further urgency onto Tuesday’s debt limit meeting at the White House, despite slim prospects for a major breakthrough between Democrats insisting on a straightforward hike and Republicans pushing for major concessions in return for their debt votes. What remains unclear, though, is whether the Treasury Department can limp along paying the bills until June 15, when quarterly tax receipts would provide a cash infusion and likely stave off default through the end of next month.

If Treasury can hold off a default until the end of June, it would be able to tap into about $145 billion in new “extraordinary measures,” buying the government a little more borrowing power into the summer. The coming weeks will offer more clarity about whether Treasury can make it to mid-June and give Congress and the White House a longer ramp to negotiate a debt limit deal, said Shai Akabas, BPC’s director of economic policy.

“I still don’t think now is the time for panic, but it’s certainly time to start getting concerned,” Akabas said, noting that Treasury “is skating on very thin ice” next month due to low cash flows.

The Treasury cash crunch that could cripple the U.S. economy in the coming weeks stems in part from a disappointing tax season, mixed with delayed tax filing deadlines for residents of states like California that sit in designated disaster areas, Akabas said.

Other estimates that point to a potential debt catastrophe in early June also underscore that considerable variability in the X-date will remain — until perhaps just days before the U.S. would officially default — thanks to the often unpredictable nature of federal cash flows.

After Yellen issued her warning last week, the independent Congressional Budget Office also said it sees “a significantly greater risk that the Treasury will run out of funds in early June.”

Mark Zandi, the chief economist for Moody’s Analytics, told senators during a Budget Committee hearing on Thursday that the X-date could fall on June 8. He added that Yellen’s early warning of June 1 is also very possible, as is a “best case scenario” of Aug. 8.

The distress signals from government and outside forecasters have done nothing to jumpstart talks between the White House, which is insisting on a “clean” debt limit increase, and Republicans, who are demanding spending cuts in exchange for lifting the borrowing cap. The Biden administration has refused to negotiate, vowing to keep government funding on a separate track.

A number of Republicans aren’t feeling the pressure either, viewing Yellen’s early June projection as nothing more than a political ploy aimed at squeezing the GOP to swallow a clean debt hike. Akabas said Yellen’s warning is consistent with how the Bipartisan Policy Center is analyzing the situation, however, noting that “no risk is too small a risk to flag.”

“Yeah, I don’t think she’s playing games,” Zandi concurred in an interview last week.

Experts say that financial markets are starting to signal trouble ahead amid the debt standoff, particularly among yields in short-term Treasury securities, and that those cracks will only start to worsen as the country lurches closer to the limit. The U.S. is also at risk of another credit rating downgrade, a painful consequence of the debt ceiling standoff that gripped Washington more than a decade ago.

Pressure from the markets is what may ultimately force action, Zandi said.

“I don’t think lawmakers will act until they’re pushed to act by the stock market and the bond market saying, ‘If you guys don’t, this is what’s going to happen’,” Zandi said. “There’s going to be a lot of red on the screen, a lot of 401Ks are going to be diminished and there’s going to be a lot of angry people.”

  • 7 dead after SUV hits crowd at Texas bus stop near border

7 dead after SUV hits crowd at Texas bus stop near border

    [ad_1]

    deadly bus stop crash 64541

The city bus stop is across the street from the shelter and is not marked. There was no bench, and people waiting there were sitting along the curb, Maldonado said. He said most of the victims were Venezuelan men.

He said the SUV flipped after running up on the curb and continued moving for about 200 feet. Some people walking on the sidewalk about 30 feet from the main group were also hit, Maldonado said. Witnesses detained the driver as he tried to run away and held him until police arrived, he said.

Brownsville police investigator Martin Sandoval said the crash happened about 8:30 a.m. and police did not know whether the driver intentionally hit people.

“It can be three factors,” Sandoval said. “It could be intoxication; it could be an accident; or it could be intentional. In order for us to find out exactly what happened, we have to eliminate the other two.”

The driver was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained when the car rolled over, Sandoval said. There were no passengers in the car and police didn’t immediately know the drivers’ name or age, Sandoval said on Sunday afternoon.

“He’s being very uncooperative at the hospital, but he will be transported to our city jail as soon as he gets released,” Sandoval said. “Then we’ll fingerprint him and (take a) mug shot, and then we can find his true identity.”

Police also retrieved a blood sample and sent it to a Texas Department of Public Safety lab to test for intoxicants.

Brownsville has long been an epicenter for migration across the U.S.-Mexico border, and it has become a key location of interest for next week’s end to pandemic-era border restrictions known as Title 42. The Ozanam shelter is the only overnight shelter in the city and manages the release of thousands of migrants from federal custody.

Maldonado said the center had not received any threats before the crash, but they did afterward.

“I’ve had a couple of people come by the gate and tell the security guard that the reason this happened was because of us,” Maldonado said.

The shelter can hold 250, but many who arrive leave the same day. In the last several weeks, an uptick in border crossings prompted the city to declare an emergency as local, state and federal resources coordinated enforcement and humanitarian response.

“In the last two months, we’ve been getting 250 to 380 a day,” Maldonado said.

While the shelter offers migrants transportation during the week, they also use the city’s public transportation.

U.S. Rep. Vicente González said Sunday that local officials are in communication with the federal government about the crash.

“We are all extremely sad and heartbroken to have such a tragedy in our neighborhood,” he said.

  • Biden’s approval rating hits new low

Biden’s approval rating hits new low

    [ad_1]

    biden 22628

For Biden, part of the issue is the president’s age and acuity. Twenty-six percent said Biden, who is 80, is too old for another term, and an additional 43 percent said both Biden and Trump, who is 76, are too old. Only 28 percent said that neither is too old for another four years in the White House.

When asked if Biden “has the mental sharpness it takes to serve effectively as president,” only 32 percent said they believe he does, while 63 percent said they do not. Of those who said he does not, 94 percent were Republicans, 69 percent were independents and 21 percent were Democrats.

Biden has repeatedly pushed back against criticism of his age. “I feel good,” he said at a Rose Garden press conference late last month. “And I feel excited about the prospects, and I think we’re on the verge of really turning the corner in a way we haven’t in a long time.”

The poll also showed Biden lagging behind Trump, the current front-runner to be the GOP nominee, in a head-to-head match-up. If Biden and Trump were the candidates, 38 percent said they would definitely or probably vote for the president, compared to 44 percent who would definitely or probably back Trump.

And Biden fell behind Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a head-to-head matchup, nabbing 37 percent to DeSantis’ 42 percent. DeSantis has not yet entered the presidential race, though he is widely expected to.

One specific issue where voters prefer Trump to Biden: the economy. When pitted against his 2020 presidential rival on handling the economy, Trump boasted higher approval than Biden, with 54 percent saying they viewed his handling of the economy more favorably, and just 36 percent saying Biden has done the better job.

Trump came out on top when pitted against other Republican presidential hopefuls. But the poll also heralded some bad news for the former president, who is currently facing down felony charges and multiple on-going investigations.

Fifty-six percent said Trump should face criminal charges related to investigations into whether he tried to illegally overturn the results of the 2020 election, including 90 percent of Democrats, 59 percent of independents and 16 percent of Republicans.

Fifty-four percent said he should face charges over his handling of classified documents, including 86 percent of Democrats, 58 percent of independents and 17 percent of Republicans; and 54 percent said he should be charged for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection, including 91 percent of Democrats, 55 percent of independents and 16 percent of Republicans.

The poll, which was conducted by phone from April 28 to May 3, included responses from 1,006 adults across the country, and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. Of those adults, 900 were registered voters, 396 said they leaned Democratic and 438 said they leaned Republican.

  • Shortage of Textbooks Hits Uri Schools, Parents Aghast

    [ad_1]

    Zaffer Iqbal

Uri, May 6 (GNS): Most of the students enrolled across various schools in Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district are suffering for the want of text-books for over a month now, which has expectedly affected the education scenario in the frontier town.

A delegation of parents told GNS that despite the fact that the classes have started well before a month, still most of the students have not been provided with the textbooks by the respective schools.

A parent, part of delegation, told his son is reading in class 5th but EVS, Mathematics and Kashmiri books have not been provided to him as of now.

Another parent with a somewhat similar claim said his ward, reading in Class 2, is yet to receive his Urdu book.

Expressing their resentment, the delegation said the lackadaisical approach by the schools in the area have reduced free education to merely a joke.

“If this remains the situation, how well will our wards learn?”, another delegation member said.

“We appeal Director School Education Kashmir to take necessary action and provide complete books to their children as soon as possible so that the education of their wards is not affected anymore”, they said.

When contacted, a School Education Department official admitted they have lack of availability of several books. “We have taken up the matter with higher-ups and hope that all the books required are made available at an earliest”, the official told GNS. (GNS)

Deve Gowda hits back at Modi for calling JD(S) B-team of Congress

    [ad_1]

Hassan: Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda on Thursday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for calling JD(S) a B – team of Congress party.

Speaking to reporters in Arsikere town of Hassan district in Karnataka, Deve Gowda stated, it does not suit the standards of a tall leader like PM Modi to talk lightly about JD(S) party. “PM Modi has ruled the country as the Prime Minister for almost 10 years. I feel that PM Modi talking about our party was uncalled for,” he said.

“I have never thought that PM Modi would say something dubbing JD(S) as B-team of Congress. PM Modi is reiterating Rahul Gandhi’s statement in the last assembly election. There is no difference in the statements of both the leaders,” he claimed.

    MS Education Academy

Rahul Gandhi had claimed that JD(S) is the B-team of BJP.

The party should not have brought the tall leader such as PM Modi to the level of Rahul Gandhi, Deve Gowda stated. PM Modi and Amit Shah are proclaiming that voting for JD(S) is equivalent to voting for Congress party.

Former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Deve Gowda’s son, had stated that the charishma and image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has come down and his aggressive campaign won’t have any impact in the Karnataka assembly elections.

Kumaraswamy stated, after nine years, the image of PM Modi has come down. The national leaders from New Delhi are coming to to the state for election campaigns. They should have come when the people of the state were in distress. “They did not come then, now arriving,” he taunted.

Now, PM Modi is coming down in Karnataka and waving at people in roadshows. What is the contribution of BJP to Kalyana Karnataka region? Ten years have passed since the verdict of Krishna River Tribunal. What has been done by Congress and BJP? Kumaraswamy asked.

PM Modi claims that Congress and JD(S) have done injustice to farmers? He should tell what injustice has been done to farmers? They did not give instalment of Fasal Bima Scheme, now Modi claims they are giving water at doorsteps. In which village Jal Jeevan Mission is successful? Kumaraswamy questioned

‘When Babri Masjid was demolished, they…,’ Asaduddin Owaisi hits out at Congress

    [ad_1]

Hubballi: Hitting out at the Congress party on Tuesday, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that the grand old party just makes promises before the elections but non of them are fulfilled.

Referring to the Babri Masjid demolition, he said that Congress made a resolution of rebuilding the mosque but nothing was done.

“When Babri Masjid was demolished, they made a resolution of rebuilding a mosque there. What became of that? A lot of things are said before elections. You can see what happens post-elections…,” said Owaisi.

    MS Education Academy

Owaisi refuted the claims made by Congress that he was sent by the BJP to divide Muslim votes in the poll-bound Karnataka.

“…This is nonsense. We are contesting on only 2 seats across Karnataka. There is a saying in Urdu – naach na jaane aangan tedha. That is their case,” he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Congress released its manifesto for Karnataka polls making a slew of promises such as ‘Gruha Jyoti’, ‘Gruha Lakshmi’ and ‘Anna Bhagya’ even as it apparently sought to draw a parallel between Bajrang Dal and PFI and said it will take decisive action as per law including imposing a ban on any organisations which promote enmity and hatred.

The manifesto was released by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge in the presence of senior state leaders.

The party said it will increase the quota limit from 50 per cent to 75 per cent for all castes based on population.

The party also promised to release the Socio-Economic caste census and accord social justice accordingly.

The Congress said it will ensure 80 per cent of jobs in Karnataka to local people in both the public and private sectors.

The party has promised a start-up fund of Rs 10 crore to each constituency.

Karnataka will go to Assembly polls on May 10 and the counting of votes will take place on May 13.

  • BJP hits back at NC’s Abdullah, says his remarks on G20 conspiracy to divide society

BJP hits back at NC’s Abdullah, says his remarks on G20 conspiracy to divide society

    [ad_1]

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina on Monday hit out at National Conference president Farooq Abdullah over his criticism of the government for not holding a G20 meeting in Jammu, saying it was a “deliberate attempt” to divide the society.

He said Abdullah’s remarks show his frustration as the political ground of the National Conference is slipping fast.

Earlier in the day, Abdullah attacked the government, saying it is unfortunate that G20 meetings were scheduled in Ladakh and Kashmir but not in Jammu, and slammed BJP leaders for not raising the issue.

    MS Education Academy

“A G20 meeting is taking place in J-K which is a welcome decision of the government and the people are thankful to the prime minister for it. Some people do not digest peace, prosperity and development and are feeling pain in their belly as they see J-K marching ahead with people maintaining communal harmony and brotherhood,” Raina told reporters at the party headquarters here.

“Jammu and Kashmir is a single entity and it does not matter whether the meeting is taking place in Srinagar or Jammu It is a conspiracy to poison the minds of the people and divide the society which will not succeed,” he added.

Raina said the National Conference ruled J-K for most part of the past 70 years through “divisive politics” and it is not willing to allow people to live in peace and harmony. “They are frustrated as they see their political ground slipping away and such a remark is reflective of their frustration.”

On Abdullah’s remark about growing incidents of terrorism in Jammu region post the abrogation of Article 370, the BJP leader said he wants to remind the National Conference leader, who was the chief minister for several terms and a union minister as well, that the markets and educational institutions used to remain shut for 10 months every year.

“There used to be no transport service, tourist influx had stopped and Lal Chowk and other main markets used to wore a deserted look while stone-pelting has become an order of the day with even Muslims apprehensive of visiting mosques for Friday and Eid prayers That time has gone and there is peace and brotherhood, whether in Jammu or Kashmir,” he said.

Raina said J and K is on the path of development because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Abdullah should hear the voice of his conscience and he will himself see the difference. Modi had pasted balm on the wounds of those who have suffered at the hands of Pakistan and anti-national forces,” he said, adding “Modi is living in the hearts of every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir.”

He also talked about the benefits of abrogation of Article 370 on the lives of West Pakistan refugees, PoJK refugees, Gorkha community, Valmiki Samaj and women married outside J-K.

Referring to the historic 100th episode of the prime minister’s Maan Ki Baat’ radio broadcast, Raina said over six lakh residents of J-K listened to the programme together, giving the BJP the confidence that it will emerge a winner in the next assembly elections.

“Holding of assembly elections is the prerogative of the Election Commission of India but the BJP is ready for the polls and given the support of the people to Modi, we will win the polls with a majority of seats (to form the next government),” he said.

He thanked the prime minister for always encouraging J-K residents through his Maan Ki Baat’ and said Modi has always heard the “Janta’s Maan Ki Baat” and is keeping them close to his heart and resolving all their issues.

  • Russia hits Ukraine with huge barrage of Iranian-made drones

Russia hits Ukraine with huge barrage of Iranian-made drones

    [ad_1]

    g7 foreign ministers 63983

Russia hammered Ukraine with a new barrage of missiles and drones in the early hours of Monday morning, as Moscow gears up to celebrate victory over the Nazis in World War II.

In the Kyiv region, Ukrainian air defense shot down 35 Iranian-made Shahed drones, according to Ukraine’s air force. But the debris damaged several buildings and injured civilians. Russian bombers also fired at least eight cruise missiles at the Odesa region, leaving food warehouses destroyed.

Russia celebrates the Soviet triumph over Hitler on May 9 annually, and President Vladimir Putin has used the holiday to boost his strongman image during his decades in power.

But this year’s celebrations will be somewhat muted, with Putin canceling parades in Russia’s Kursk and Belgorod regions, which border Ukraine, and in Russian-occupied Crimea, citing security concerns. Moscow is now in the second year of its full-scale war on Ukraine and there’s no sign of imminent victory, while even the Kremlin is no longer completely safe after last week’s drone attack.

Ukraine said all the drones were shot down, but falling debris still caused destruction. At least five people were injured, reported Sergiy Popko, head of Kyiv region’s military administration. Several cars were destroyed, and residential buildings, a diesel reservoir and a gas pipe were damaged.

Ukraine’s southern Odesa region also came under fire. The Ukrainian army reported that Russia fired at least eight cruise missiles at the region.

“X-22 type missiles hit the warehouse of one of the food enterprises and the recreational zone on the Black Sea coast,” the Ukrainian military said. “Emergency services work at the scene. Three people, all workers of the warehouse, got minor injuries. One person is missing,” Yuriy Kruk, head of Odesa district military administration, reported.

On the eve of Russia’s V-Day, the strikes come as the Kremlin struggles to break a stalemate in Bakhmut, which it has spent months attacking. Russian mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin has veered wildly in recent days, first threatening to pull his forces out of Bakhmut over a row with the Kremlin’s top military officials — then announcing his troops would remain on the battlefield.

Ukraine’s top priority is to hold Bakhmut through May 9 — and embarrass Putin in the process.
