Amid layoffs, techies now hit by soaring rents in Bengaluru

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Soaring rents in Bengaluru have emerged as a major challenge for the software professionals who are already affected by salary cuts and fear of layoffs.

As companies are slowly coming out of hybrid working mode and making reporting to office compulsory, techies from across the country are coming back to Bengaluru and settling down.

The rents for flats, independent houses and residential facilities in Bengaluru, especially those which are close to IT parks, have almost doubled.

    MS Education Academy

The techies, especially those in early phase of their career, are finding it difficult to afford exorbitant rents and they are considering to migrate to distant localities that have afforable rents as well as good connectivity with their workplaces. Bachelors are coming together to share the living space while married ones are finding it hard, explain industry sources.

Magicbricks Property Index Report for January to March revealed that residential demand (searches) in Bengaluru increased 10.3 per cent QoQ, making it amongst the top 3 preferred metros in India.

During the same time, residential supply (active listings) observed a marginal decline of 1.1 per cent QoQ and the demand-supply mismatch led to an increase of 2.5 per cent in the average property rates.

The average rates of ready-to-move and under-construction properties increased 2.5 per cent and 2 per cent QoQ, respectively.

The report also stated that Bengaluru records the second highest increase in residential demand (10.3 per cent QoQ).

Sarjapur Road emerged as the most preferred residential area in Bengaluru, the report said.

The report also revealed that 3BHK configurations gained the highest traction commanding a share of 48 per cent in the total residential demand during this (January-March) quarter and 43 per cent share in the total supply (listing).

This was followed by 2BHK configurations which held 38 per cent share of the demand and 43 per cent of the supply in the city.

Elaborating on the trends, Sudhir Pai, CEO, Magicbricks commented: “Several multilateral agencies have projected that the Indian economy will grow by 6-7 per cent in FY23, despite the global slowdown. The recent Union Budget has also introduced several encouraging initiatives, including substantial allocations to PMAY and UIDF, which have set the wheels in motion for facilitating employment opportunities and infrastructure development.

“Given the under-served demand for home-ownership in the affordable and mid-range segment, we are optimistic about the growth trajectory for residential demand in the coming quarters as well. We anticipate that the market will stabilise, supplemented by new projects and expedited delivery of under-construction properties, which will open up new avenues for investment and innovation.”

Patna: The Muslim holy month of Ramzan is noted for being politically significant in Bihar. It was in the Ramzan last year when the screenplay of the second Mahagathbandhan government was scripted when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar went to RJD leader Rabri Devi’s residence for the Iftar party and the government was finally changed in the months of August.

Now, JD-U MLC Khalid Anwar invited Nitish Kumar as a chief guest in the Iftar party in his official residence in Phulwarisharif in Patna and in the background of the stage was the Red Fort, while the caption read: “People of Bihar are along with you. The country is waiting for you, Ramzan Mubarak.”

With this, the JD-U has given a message that Nitish Kumar is eyeing hoisting the national flag next year from the Red Fort.

Earlier in the day, Anwar had placed the posters of Nitish Kumar with the background of the Red Fort in the streets of Patna.

Nitish Kumar himself has denied several times in the past that he had no wish of becoming the Prime Minister. Even Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav claimed in the Assembly that neither does he have a wish to become Chief Minister of Bihar nor does Nitish Kumar have a wish to become the Prime Minister.

However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during the Nawada rally on Sunday, claimed that Nitish Kumar’s wish to become Prime Minister would not be fulfilled as there is no vacancy for the post. The Red Fort poster could the JD-U’s riposte to the BJP and Amit Shah.

26 killed after deadly tornadoes, storms hit multiple US states

    [ad_1]

Washington: At least 26 people have been killed after a series of tornadoes and deadly storms struck through towns and cities in several US states, authorities said on Sunday.

Homes were destroyed and thousands left without power after huge storms caused devastation across several states, the BBC reported.

According to the National Weather Service of the US, there have been more than 80 reported tornadoes since Friday.

    MS Education Academy

States including Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Alabama and Mississippi have all had fatalities.

One storm shredded through the Arkansas town of Wynne — a community, around 170 km from the state capital, Little Rock.

A school was badly damaged, with some buildings torn to pieces. One of its teachers, Lisa Worden, said a decision to send pupils home early was critical.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared a state of emergency in the state of Arkansas on Friday, with the national guard activated to help with recovery efforts.

She said she had spoken to US President Joe Biden about the situation, who promised federal aid.

Friday’s storms also led to the collapse of a theatre roof at a packed heavy metal gig in Belvidere, Illinois state, leading to one death and 28 injuries.

As storms continue to work their way east, hundreds of thousands of people are without power across several states.

Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania are the worst affected, according to the US PowerOutage website.

In a bulletin, the Storm Prediction Center warned some of the projected tornadoes could track across the ground for long distances.

The deadly tornadoes come a week after a rare, long-track twister killed 26 people in Mississippi.

The Mississippi tornado last week travelled 94 km and lasted about an hour and 10 minutes — an unusually long period of time for a storm to sustain itself. It damaged about 2,000 homes, officials said.

President Biden visited the state on Friday to pay his condolences.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb on Saturday declared disaster emergencies for Sullivan and Johnson counties.

Fatalities were also reported in Alabama and Mississippi, and tornadoes also caused damage in eastern Iowa.

From northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, including Chicago and Milwaukee, tornado watches extend nearly 1,000 miles all the way to Mississippi and Texas, affecting tens of thousands of people on Friday, according to AccuWeather.

It could take days to determine the exact number of tornadoes, said Bill Bunting, chief of forecast operations at the Storm Prediction Center.

There were also hundreds of reports of large hail and damaging winds, said Bunting, adding that “that’s a quite active day… but that’s not unprecedented.”

Just one week ago, a massive tornado levelled a town in the southern US state of Mississippi, claiming 25 lives. The 26th death was reported in Alabama during the same round of turbulent weather.

The latest “intense supercell thunderstorms” are only expected to become more common in middle and southern US states, as temperatures rise around the world, experts say.

Washington: At least 21 people have been killed and more than 130 others injured after strong tornadoes and deadly storms struck multiple midwestern and southern US states Friday into early Saturday, authorities said on Sunday.

According to CNN, more than 50 preliminary tornado reports were recorded on Friday in at least seven US states.

Four people died and dozens more were hurt when a confirmed strong tornado tore through Wynne, the county seat and largest city of Cross County, Arkansas, according to local media outlet Region 8 News.

There was “total destruction throughout the town” and dozens of residents were trapped following the tornado, Xinhua News Agnecy reported quoting Wynne Police Chief Richard Dennis.

One person died and at least 50 people were sent to hospitals in Little Rock, Arkansas, after a violent tornado caused severe damage on Friday afternoon, according to Pulaski County officials.

“Close to 2,600 structures have been impacted,” Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. told CNN on Saturday.

At least seven people were killed in McNairy County, which is located in southwest Tennessee, State Governor Bill Lee said in a statement.

A 50-year-old man was killed on the scene when the roof of the Apollo Theatre in Belvidere, northern Illinois collapsed on Friday night. Up to 40 others were taken to hospitals, with at least two of them in critical condition, officials said.

Three others were killed following the collapse of a residential structure in Crawford County, southern Illinois, according to Illinois Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Kevin Sur.

Also on Friday night, three people died while multiple residences and the volunteer fire department were damaged in Sullivan County, Indiana, State Police Sgt. Matt Ames said.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb on Saturday declared disaster emergencies for Sullivan and Johnson counties.

Fatalities were also reported in Alabama and Mississippi, and tornadoes also caused damage in eastern Iowa.

  • Kashmiri Handicraft Exports Set To Hit Rs 1000 Cr In 2023

Kashmiri Handicraft Exports Set To Hit Rs 1000 Cr In 2023

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Following the unexpected decline in the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370 and the subsequent COVID-19 pandemic, it is expected that the export of Kashmiri handicrafts will amount to Rs 1000 crore during the fiscal year of 2022-2023.

In the wake of the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic which has had a devastating impact on the global economy, the region of Kashmir remained closed for several weeks. Despite these challenges, it is encouraging to note that the export of handicrafts from Kashmir has increased during the fiscal year of 2022-2023.

According to official figures obtained by the news agency KINS, exports amounting to Rs 728.99 crore were recorded during the first three quarters of the fiscal year 2022-2023. Among these exports, Kashmiri carpets alone accounted for over Rs. 300 crore to various countries. Other notable handicraft items that were exported include shawls, paper machie, wood carving, and crewel/chain stitch products.

Mahmood Ahmad Shah, the Director of Handicrafts and Handlooms J&K, has reported that the figures for the export of Kashmiri handicrafts have been finalized for only the first three quarters of the current fiscal year. However, he expressed optimism that the export of these handicrafts is likely to reach Rs. 1000 crore by the end of the fiscal year 2022-2023. While it may take some time to confirm these final figures, Shah is confident in the positive trajectory of the industry.

During the 2021-22 fiscal year, Kashmir’s world-renowned handicraft products, which are known for their high quality and handcrafted nature, were exported to various markets for a total worth of Rs. 563.13 crore. Among these exports, carpets were the top-selling item with exports reaching Rs. 251.06 crore.

The Gulf and European countries represent a major customer base for Kashmiri carpets and Pashmina shawls. The iconic Kashmiri carpets are widely recognized for their intricate designs and impeccable craftsmanship, with some of the finest examples created during the Mughal-Afghan and Sikh-Dogra periods being showcased in prestigious museums across the globe. Recently, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reported an unprecedented growth in the handicraft and handloom sector of the Union Territory during the fiscal year 2022-2023. He attributed this success to several important measures taken by the administration to support and promote the industry.

“We are committed to provide training, design, technology, financial and other infrastructure support that will significantly contribute to the growth of this sector and earnings of artisans,” stated the Lieutenant Governor. “More than three lakh artisans are registered with the department. A number of steps like enhanced financial assistance, 7 per cent interest subvention, training, assistance to 3,000 Self Help Groups and cooperative societies have been taken to accelerate the development of this sector,” the LG said. • Medical services hit in Rajasthan as doctors protest Right to Health Bill

Medical services hit in Rajasthan as doctors protest Right to Health Bill

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Medical services were affected in parts of Rajasthan on Wednesday after government doctors and faculty members in medical colleges went on a one-day strike in solidarity with private doctors agitating against the Right to Health Bill.

However, several government doctors attended to patients in OPDs at places like Bharatpur, Alwar and Udaipur.

Emergency services and ICUs were exempted from the strike.

A health department official said in the evening that there was no significant impact of the boycott because the OPDs were handled through alternative arrangements.

There was not much impact of the boycott in Sawai Mansingh (SMS) hospitals, the largest state-run hospitals in Rajasthan. Services remained unaffected in Dausa, the hometown of state Health Minister Parsadi Lal Meena.

In Rajasthan, private doctors are demanding withdrawal of the Bill passed in the state assembly last Tuesday. According to the Bill, every resident of the state will have the right to emergency treatment and care “without prepayment” at any “public health institution, health care establishment and designated health care centres”.

Iqbal Khan, joint secretary, health department, had on Tuesday issued an order to medical college principals directing them to ensure that medical services in OPD, IPD, ICU, emergency and maternity wards were not affected and to take disciplinary action against the doctors going on leave without approval.

Meena said the strike was “unfair” and “unjustified” and that the doors of the government were always open for any negotiation.

Taking a tough stand, the state government warned of disciplinary action against the government doctors for going on leave without approval. As a result, some of the doctors returned to work after boycotting work for two hours in Alwar, Bharatpur, Udaipur and Dungarpur.

Amid the protest, Bundi collector Ravindra Goswami, who is also an MBBS doctor, attended to a few patients at the district hospital.

The management of OPD in SMS hospital was handled by additional principal, additional superintendent and other doctors engaged in administrative work.

  • Biden’s nominees hit the Senate skids

Biden’s nominees hit the Senate skids

    [ad_1]

That’s in addition to the Pentagon promotions being stalled by a Republican senator and the judicial appointments delayed due to a senior Democratic senator’s extended absence.

Underlining the tension between the narrowly divided Senate and the administration was the Saturday evening withdrawal of Phil Washington, tapped to lead the Federal Aviation Administration. Democrats blamed a GOP campaign against him, led by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), but the reality is that Biden’s own party could have saved Washington had they kept their own side united and put up a simple majority.

In Washington’s case, Commerce Committee member Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) had communicated her concerns to the Biden administration. And Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) stayed undecided ahead of the committee vote, right up until Washington bowed out.

“That’s a better question for the president,” Tester, who faces a reelection campaign this cycle, said of the FAA imbroglio. Asked if he supported the nominee, he responded: “Never had to make that vote.”

Washington’s implosion comes at a crucial inflection point for the Biden White House’s confirmation operation. On Monday night, some Democrats were still digesting the news that he had withdrawn over the weekend.

“He had the vast majority of supportive people in our caucus, whether from the left to the moderate wings of our caucus, so I’m very sorry that the misrepresentations of his record … resulted in his having to withdraw,” said Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.).

At Washington’s nomination hearing, Sinema said it was important to confirm a permanent FAA chief. But while noting Washington’s military experience as well as his job as CEO of the Denver International Airport, she said that the agency needed someone with aviation experience at the top — a strong hint that she was not convinced that Washington was right for the role, since that was the main line of attack against Biden’s pick.

Sinema said in a statement on Monday that “the administration should quickly nominate a permanent FAA administrator with the necessary, substantial aviation safety experience and expertise.”

Commerce Committee Democrats and Biden administration “knew from the beginning she was concerned” about Washington’s level of experience and little effort was made to assuage Sinema, said a person familiar with Sinema’s interactions who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A Biden administration official, who would also only address the flap on condition of anonymity, said they “fought hard for Phil” and denied that they had dropped the ball.

“If someone at the end of the day decides not to vote a certain way, that’s the senator’s decision, but there’s no doubt in my mind that we did everything we could to fight for him,” the official said.

The Commerce Committee in particular has given Biden’s nominees a rough ride. FCC nominee Gigi Sohn withdrew earlier this month after being twice nominated by Biden for a position on the commission. That’s on top of several other tough confirmation fights consuming the early days of this Congress.

Julie Su’s nomination to head the Labor Department is expected to draw most of the GOP’s attention in the coming weeks; she had no Republican support in the vote to confirm her as deputy Labor Secretary in 2021, and moderate Democrats will face pressure to oppose her even though she won Democratic support back then.

When asked about Su’s chances of making it to the Cabinet, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), chair of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said only: “I’m looking forward to the hearing and looking forward to her confirmation.”

Tester said he’d made no decision on Su, while Sinema has a policy against previewing her votes in public. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said he’d supported Su in her current role because of his confidence in former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh.

“My vote for her last time was all predicated on Marty,” Manchin said. When asked if there was a pattern to the White House’s vetting with nominees, he replied that it was “not my job” to identify. “My job is to review who they send.”

The administration official said the White House was confident that she will get confirmed and that “organized labor is showing up in a big way for her and advocating for her confirmation.”

Manchin made waves earlier this month when he opposed Sohn, but according to two Democratic aides the FCC hopeful already had several other Democratic senators opposed to her — leaving her nowhere close to winning confirmation. In his capacity as Energy Committee chair, Manchin also will not move on Laura Daniel-Davis’ bid to serve as an assistant Interior secretary.

In addition, judicial nominee Michael Delaney, is in limbo on the Judiciary Committee due to absences, but his nomination also may not have the votes to proceed anyway on Biden’s pick for the First Circuit Court of Appeal. Broadly speaking, Judiciary Chair Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said that given Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-Calif.) absence, “I can’t consider nominees … A tie vote is a losing vote on the committee.”

On top of that, Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) has instituted a blockade of quick confirmation and promotion of Pentagon nominees after the Defense Department moved ahead with policies that would ease access to abortion and other reproductive care for troops.

Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), the top Republican on the Armed Services Committee, said he agreed with Tuberville’s opposition to the policy but that “we’re trying to work out a mutually satisfactory solution.”

“Well, if this was about enlisted personnel, people who actually do the fighting, it might be different. But this is about three- and four-star generals. We got too many as it is,” Tuberville said.

The administration’s nominee problems pale in comparison to those that plagued former President Donald Trump, who was unsuccessful on several Federal Reserve nominees and multiple Cabinet picks. Republicans also sank or criticized some of his judicial nominees.

“Sometimes administrations don’t do a good job of vetting their nominees. And when they don’t, then things like this happen,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), the whip during two years of Trump’s presidency, referring to Washington’s withdrawal.

Biden’s first two years as president also saw some intraparty opposition: Senate Democrats opposed Saule Omarova’s nomination to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and sank David Weil’s bid to head the Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division. Manchin also singlehandedly spiked Neera Tanden’s nomination to be Biden’s budget chief.

“We have successfully confirmed over 800 nominees, including many in a 50-50 Senate last session. An onslaught of unfounded Republican attacks on Mr. Washington’s service and experience irresponsibly delayed this process,” said a White House official.

The official added: “As of last week, we have nominated agency leaders on pace with Obama and confirmed 100 more than Trump had at this time in his administration.”

  • GitHub lays off entire India engineering team, at least 100 employees hit

GitHub lays off entire India engineering team, at least 100 employees hit

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Open source developer platform GitHub has laid off its entire engineering team in India, its second largest developer community after the US, which affected at least 100 employees as part of the “reorganisation plan”.

Tech writer Gergely Orosz, who tracks global tech layoffs especially among the engineering/developer teams, the Github team in India has been let go at once.

“We’re talking of 100 engineers. This was done as the team was smaller than other locations, owning fewer and lower priority stuff,” he said in a tweet.

Orosz said he confirmed the layoffs after “talking with (now former) GitHub India engineers”.

A GitHub spokesperson told IANS that as part of the reorganisation plan shared in February, “workforce reductions were made today”.

It was “part of difficult but necessary decisions and realignments to both protect the health of our business in the short term and grant us the capacity to invest in our long-term strategy moving forward,” said the company spokesperson.

Microsoft-owned open source developer platform in February announced it was laying off 10 per cent of its workforce through the end of the company’s fiscal year.

GitHub had about 3,000 employees before the layoffs were announced.

In an email to employees, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke had said that sustained growth is important for every business.

“Today, we are the home of 100 million developers, and we must become the developer-first engineering system for the world of tomorrow. We must continue to help our customers grow and thrive with GitHub, expedite and simplify their cloud adoption journey, while supporting them every day,” the CEO wrote.

“Unfortunately, this will include changes that will result in a reduction of GitHub’s workforce by up to 10 per cent through the end of FY23. The hiring pause that I announced on January 18 remains in effect,” he added.

The open source developer platform has reached 100 million members globally, and is growing fast in India too where it has crossed 10 million developers on the platform.

This makes India the second largest developer community on GitHub, behind the US.

“Youths, worst hit during YSRCP rule…” TDP national general secy Nara Lokesh

    [ad_1]

Annamayya: Launching a scathing attack on the ruling party, the national general secretary of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Nara Lokesh on Thursday said that it is the youths, who suffered a lot after YSRCP came to power.

During his ongoing pada yatra, Yuva Galam, Lokesh interacted with the youths at the Vijaya Ganapathy Function Hall at Maddaiah Garipalli of Thamballapalle Assembly segment.

“During the regime of Chandrababu Naidu, Andhra Pradesh was known to be the capital of jobs in India but now it is known as Ganja capital of India,” Lokesh said.

The TDP leader also assured the youths that jobs will be announced every year once his party is voted to power in the State.

Lokesh asked the youths to strive to bring the TDP back into government again.

Earlier the youths of the State complained to Lokesh that there is no government degree college nearby for them and the unemployment allowance that was paid during the TDP regime is discontinued now.

They also complained to Lokesh that there are no self-employment opportunities in the State now.

The youths asked the TDP leader to brief them on what steps his party will take if it comes back to power to rid the State of drugs.

Earlier in the day, at the Indiramma Colony campsite, Lokesh paid rich tributes to Potti Sriramulu on the occasion of his birth anniversary. The leaders of the Buduga Janga Welfare Association met Lokesh at the same campsite and apprised him of the problems, they have been facing for the past four years.

Promising all possible measures for their welfare, Lokesh called upon the Buduga Janga leaders to work hard to bring his father and former State’s CM, Chandrababu back as the chief minister.
