Karnataka: PUC topper Tabassum Shaik calls Hijab ban ‘unfair’

    [ad_1]

A year after Karnataka was hit by the hijab controversy disallowing several hijab-clad PU Muslim girls to discontinue or look for other options for education, a hijab-clad Muslim student topped this year’s PUC examination in the Arts stream.

Eighteen-year-old Tabassum Shaik and her family are ecstatic about the results that were declared on April 21. Tabassum was one of the many Muslim girls who faced the dilemma and uncertainty of choosing education or her religious belief.

In an interview with The Telegraph, she said she was traumatized when the hijab was banned in December 2021. The decision to attend classes without it put her under extreme guilt.

    MS Education Academy

“But my parents told me that dropping out would affect our community and push us deeper into backwardness. So, they encouraged me to continue my studies,” Tabassum said who scored 593 out of 600 marks with a perfect score of 100 in Hindi, Psychology, and Sociology.

Tabassum is the second child of Abdul Khaum Shaik, an electronics engineer, and Parveen Shaik, a homemaker. Her elder sibling Abdul Kalam Shaik is doing an MTech in machine planning at a Bangalore design school.

“Many of my classmates stopped attending school and opted for distant education,” Tabassum said. She further stated that to enter her class without the hijab was not easy for her who has been wearing the headscarf since the age of five.

“Once the hijab ban started, I skipped college for two weeks. But my parents saw a bigger picture and how this would influence our local area. This encouraged me to continue my studies,” Tabassum said trying to motivate herself to navigate through her difficult choice.

Tabassum studied for 6-8 hours every day for the exams and prioritized my religious responsibilities equally.

But fear has not ended for Tabassum. Her greatest concern is if the ban would extend to colleges. “I am very concerned about whether I would be permitted to wear the hijab in the future at the university,”  she was quoted by The Telegraph.

Tabassum expressed strong views about the hijab ban in Karnataka describing it as ‘undemocratic’ and ‘unsecular’.

“It was extremely unfair and illogical that in a secular country, I had to give up my hijab in order to pursue my education when I should ideally be able to do both,” The Telegraph quoted her.

    Karnataka’s hijab controversy

The hijab controversy erupted in December 2020, after six Muslim students of a pre-university college in Udupi were prohibited from wearing the hijab as part of their religious obligation in the college premises. The issue hit the roof after many protested followed by clashes with their Hindu classmates who turned up wearing saffron scarves, leaving the state government to shut down colleges in the district.

Petitions were filed opposing the government’s order to ban hijab in the Karnataka High Court. However, the three-judge bench upheld the government’s decision.

The HC’s decision was challenged in the Supreme Court of India where a two-judge bench gave a split deciison. The appeal is set to be heard by a larger bench, which is yet to be formed.

In January this year, a special data report by The Indian Express, it is revealed that there is almost a 50% drop in the admission of Muslim students in government pre-university colleges (PUCs) in Udupi district.

While there is not much change in Muslim students entering pre-university colleges (Class 11) in the district, there is a massive dip in admission to government PUCs.

In 2022-23 there have been 186 Muslim student enrollments in Udupi’s government PUCs (91 girls and 95 boys), which is almost half compared to 2021-22 number, 388 (178 girls and 210 boys).

In 2022-23, private PUCs saw a hike in Muslim admissions with 927 (487 girls and 440 boys) as compared to 2021-22 number, 662 (328 girls and 334 boys).

“The enrollment of Muslim girls in our PU college has almost doubled for the first time. This is a testament to how the hijab issue has actually impacted them personally and academically,” Indian Express quoted administrator of Saliath Group of Education, Aslam Haikady.

  • Women not wearing hijab will be refused entry to Tehran Metro

Women not wearing hijab will be refused entry to Tehran Metro

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Hijab enforcement groups will be set up on the Tehran Metro and those not wearing hijab will be refused entry, in effect banning some women from work, as per Iranian state TV, a media report said.

The move appears to be part of a pattern of government efforts to force Iranian public bodies to take greater responsibility for enforcing the hijab, The Guardian reported.

Many Iranian women, especially in urban centres, have refused to comply with the hijab rule, in a sign that the “women, life, freedom” protests that began in September last year continue in a more individualised form, the report said.

    MS Education Academy

The latest threatening clampdown comes as girls in secondary schools in Tehran, Karaj and other cities continue to report poison attacks. At least nine schools were reported to have been attacked on Sunday. According to Iranian MP Mohammad Hassan Asefari, a government fact-finding committee said the security agencies had been unable to identify the perpetrators, while the Ministry of Health is yet to determine the nature of the poison being used.

The contrast between the urgency of the efforts to enforce the hijab and the inability of the investigators to use CCTV to identify those behind the poison attacks has infuriated opponents of the government.

The Tehran Metro Company had already announced that “in line with the demands of the noble people of Iran on the issue of hijab”, it was launching a verbal reminder project in Tehran and suburban Metro stations. But the latest pictures on Iran state TV show Metro staff barring women trying to pass through the ticket barrier without a hijab, The Guardian reported.

Masoud Darshti, the Chief Executive of Tehran and Suburbs Metro Operation Company, had announced the establishment of a chastity and hijab headquarters to issue reminders. He said his staff would be required to implement any police order, but added that he had not yet personally received the instruction formally.

Women without hijab to be prosecuted ‘without mercy’: Iran’s chief justice

    [ad_1]

As more women defy Iran’s mandatory dress code, the country’s chief justice has warned to arrest women who appear in public without hijab ‘without mercy,’ news agency Reuters reported citing Iranian media.

“Unveiling is tantamount to enmity with (our) values,” Ejei was quoted as saying. “Those who commit such anomalous acts will be punished and will be prosecuted without mercy,” he said, without elaborating on what the punishment entails.

Ejei, Iran’s said that law enforcement officers were “obliged to refer obvious crimes and any kind of abnormality that is against the religious law and occurs in public to judicial authorities.”

    MS Education Academy

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei’s warning comes after the Interior Ministry issued a statement on Thursday reinforcing the government’s mandatory hijab law.

The upswell of discontent and outrage with the restrictions is still a powerful force in Iranian society, as seen by videos and photographs uploaded online.

A video uploaded this week shows a guy hurling a tub of yoghurt at an unclothed woman. Male and female passersby were outraged by his actions.

Following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman in September 2022, imprisoned by morality police in Tehran for reportedly wearing her hijab ‘improperly,’ protests surged across the Islamic Republic. Since December, thousands of people have been detained, and four demonstrators have been executed. Yet the authorities show no signs of backing down.

  • Iran’s proposed new Hijab plan includes a $6,000 fine

Iran’s proposed new Hijab plan includes a $6,000 fine

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iranian authorities have proposed a new hijab plan that includes fines of up to 30 billion Iranian Rials ($6,000) for women who violate the country’s mandatory hijab law, local media reported.

In an interview in Yazd province, Hojjat-ul-Islam Hossein Jalali said, according to the law, the punishment for wearing a hijab includes a fine of 5 million to 30 billion Iranian Rials.

Other penalties may include revoking driver’s licenses and passports, or internet bans for celebrities and social media influencers and bloggers.

These penalties will apply to passengers who do not abide by the hijab rules while riding in vehicles, in restaurants, government institutions, schools, universities, airports, public transport stations, in cyberspace, celebrities, and in streets and other public squares.

According to a report by Asharq Al-Awsat, Jalali said, a bill for a new hijab law will be prepared within the next two weeks, and parliament will then approve it.

The hijab plan comes in response to the mass protests that have rocked the country since the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody on September 16, 2022.

Her death has since ignited anger over several issues, including the restrictions imposed on personal freedoms and strict rules regarding women’s clothing, as well as the living and economic crisis that Iranians suffer from, not to mention the strict laws imposed by the regime and its political and religious composition in general.

Hijab not allowed during exams: Karnataka Education Minister

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Karnataka Education Minister B.C. Nagesh on Friday asserted that students wearing hijab will not be allowed inside the examination centres.

The II PUC (class 12) examinations are set to begin from March 9 in the state.

Speaking to reporters he maintained that it has been clarified that all students should attend exams wearing uniforms. Hijab is not part of it. Those who want to write exams wearing hijab won’t be allowed into the examination hall, he added.

Minister Nagesh further claimed that there is an increase in the number of Muslim students who appeared for the examinations after the hijab ban. “After hijab ban, more number of Muslim sisters appeared for examinations and the enrolment of Muslim girl students has increased,” he added.

The hijab case, which is in the Supreme Court, is likely to be taken up after Holi vacation. Many students abstained from attending the examination as they were not allowed to wear hijab and write exams.

The Hijab crisis in Karnataka became international news as it turned into a law and order problem and communal issue. Hindu activists and minority groups came to a confrontational position. The crisis also had a deep impact on the psyche of the students and divided them on the basis of religion in campuses.

The Karnataka High Court has rejected the applications in this regard by students and upheld the government order on uniforms. It also said hijab is not an essential part of Islam.

  • UP: Moradabad college clarifies hijab students can enter but burkhas not allowed

UP: Moradabad college clarifies hijab students can enter but burkhas not allowed

    [ad_1]

Moradabad: Reports of Hindu College in Moradabad Uttar Pradesh reportedly denying entry to students wearing burkha and hijab emerged on Thursday. However, the college authorities clarified that the ban is on burkha alone, and hijabs are allowed.

On January 1, the college sanctioned a new dress code – a uniform of grey and white. As such, burkha-clad students were stopped at the entrance following which a protest ensued.

The Quint, in its recent article, spoke to the chief proctor of the Hindu college who made it clear that the college is not discriminating against anyone on the basis of religion. The officer said burkha-clad students can change into their uniforms in the changing room provided inside the gate.

“It provides the students with the safety and privacy to take off their burqa and go to their classes. They can keep their hijab on in class. There is no restriction on the hijab in the classrooms,” as quoted by The Quint.

According to the Moradabad district leader of the Samajwadi Chatra Sabha Aslam Chaudhry the students are reportedly fine with the college’s changing room decision.

“Students were being stopped at the gate just because of their clothing. We had a problem with that and so took it up with the college authorities. They agreed to allow students with hijab to enter the classes, and said that they have to take off their burqa in the changing room inside the college. The students seem to be fine with that so we have no issues either,” he was quoted by The Quint.

For some students, the process is cumbersome and disrespectful.

“I came to fill my forms a few days ago but was asked to take off my burqa outside the gate. It was very humiliating to take off my burqa at the gate like this, even with the uniform underneath,” one of the students said.

The Hindu college was established in 1911 as a middle school and was subsequently converted into an intermediate college and then a post-graduate college in 1950. A high percentage of Muslim students study here.
