Highway construction firm to pay Rs 55 cr for environmental damage

Mumbai: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered a highway construction company to pay Rs 55.47 crore for causing environmental damage by illegally excavating stone, sand and murram for its projects in the Nashik and Hingoli districts of Maharashtra.

In two separate orders on February 22, NGT’s western zone bench in Pune directed Rajendrasinh Bhamboo Infra Private Limited to pay Rs 36.35 crore and Rs 19.12 crore to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board within a month. The detailed orders were made available recently.

“We find that since the activity of mining has been conducted by the project proponent (Rajendrasinh Bhamboo Infra) without taking prior environmental clearance, the same is treated to be a violation which impacts the environment adversely,” said the green tribunal in one of its orders.

One Dattatraya Phalke had filed pleas with the tribunal saying that the company be blacklisted for having repeatedly “violated environmental norms for its commercial benefits”.

The tribunal had earlier punished the company by imposing “environmental compensation” but it continues to violate the environmental norms, said petitioner Phalke.

As per the pleas, the firm deliberately did not obtain “prior environmental clearance for its project at Kalamnuri in Hingoli and has illegally excavated more than 4,50,000 brass of stones, murom and sand”.

For its project at Nandgaon in Nashik district, the company has carried out illegal mining of 25,000 brass of similar construction materials, the plea added.

Ramban, Mar 06: The commuters are all set to have a safe journey along Srinagar-Jammu highway by the end of March month as the authorities here have said that the two important tunnels and a bridge in Ramban district of Jammu region will be made functional this month.

Jammu-Srinagar national highway is the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country.

Official sources told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that work on several projects in Ramban district is in progress.

“800-metre-long T5 tunnel on Panthyal stretch of the highway is set to be thrown open by March 15 while Jaiswal bridge on Udhampur-Ramban section to be made operational by March 20 and Kunfer tunnel is also expected to be completed by March 31, besides double lane of Ramban flyover and Banihal bypass to be completed by April 15 this year,” they said.

Two tunnels, having a total length of 1,680 meters, would put an end to the ‘phantom of shooting stones’ and traffic disruptions along the stretch, officials said.

Speaking to KNO, Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, Mussarat Islam said all the projects on Jammu Srinagar national highway will be completed by stipulated time frame. “Work on the 800-meter T-5 Tunnel to bypass Panthyal stretch, which is vulnerable to shooting stones on highway, has been accelerated so that it becomes operational by March 15, 2023”, he said.

  • Two buses of APSRTC gutted in fire on Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway

Two buses of APSRTC gutted in fire on Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Two sleeper luxury buses of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) were gutted in a fire on Hyderabad-Vijayawada national highway on Sunday.

There were no passengers in the buses which averted a major tragedy.

The accident occurred in Telangana’s Suryapet district around 3 a.m. when APSRTC employees were trying to solve some battery issue in one of the buses by connecting them with a wire. One of the buses caught fire with a loud explosion and it soon engulfed the entire vehicle and spread to another bus.

Police said fire tenders rushed to the scene and tried to douse the fire but both the buses were completely burnt.

The accident occurred near Gumpula village in Chivvemla mandal of Suryapet district. ‘Vennela’ sleeper bus of APSRTC, which was heading to Vijayawada from Hyderabad, broke down near Gumpula village due to battery problem. The state-owned bus operator arranged another bus for the passengers. Later, APSRTC staff called another bus from Suryapet depot and were trying to rectify the battery problem in the first bus by connecting the two with a wire.

Officials suspect the fire was triggered by a battery explosion in the bus which was rushed from Suryapet depot.
