Russian casualties highest since first week of Ukraine war

    [ad_1]

London: Russian soldiers are dying in “greater numbers in Ukraine this month than at any time” since the first week of the invasion, according to Ukrainian data.

The Ukrainian data shows 824 Russian soldiers dying per day in February.

The figures were highlighted by the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD). The figures cannot be verified – but the UK says the trends are “likely accurate”, BBC reported.

The increase comes amid talk of a spring offensive by Russian forces in the east of the country.

Last week, Ukraine’s outgoing defence minister, Oleksiy Reznikov, said they were anticipating a new Russian offensive around 24 February – the anniversary of the full-scale invasion.

But some local politicians, including the governors of Luhansk and Donetsk, claimed the offensive had already begun, the media outlet reported.

Some of the fiercest fighting has been around Bakhmut in the east of the country.

On Sunday, the head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary force said the group had seized a settlement near the devastated city.

Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Telegram: “Today, the settlement of Krasna Hora was taken by assault detachments of the Wagner PMC.”

Prigozhin also gave his group credit for the offensive on Bakhmut, downplaying the Russian army’s role: “Within a radius of 50 km, plus or minus, there are only Wagner PMC fighters,” he wrote.

According to the Ukrainian data, highlighted by the UK, 824 Russian losses a day is more than four times the rate reported in June and July, when around 172 Russian soldiers died each day.

The Ukrainian military claims 137, 780 Russian military deaths since the full-scale invasion began.

The UK’s MoD pointed out the recent increase could be due to “a range of factors, including lack of trained personnel, coordination, and resources across the front”.

Ukraine “also continues to suffer a high attrition rate”, the UK’s MoD was quoted as saying by the media outlet.

  • Telangana logged highest inflation in FY23: Economic Survey

Telangana logged highest inflation in FY23: Economic Survey

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana has the highest inflation rate in the country, revealed the Economic Survey 2022-23 tabled in the Parliament on Tuesday by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

According to the report, Telangana has an inflation rate of 8.7 percent between April and December 2022 against the national average of 6.8 percent for the same period.

The report also shows that the inflation in rural Telangana was 9.2 percent while it was 8.3 percent in the urban areas.

Telangana, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh saw especially high rates of inflation in 2022-23.

Fuel and clothing were the major contributors for the surge in inflation. Another contributing factor was food inflation due to high prices of tomatoes as a result of crop damage and supply disruption due to unseasonal heavy rains in states like Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh between April-December 2022.

Reacting to the Economic Survey report, Telangana BJP President Bandi Sanjay Kumar blamed the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government for the high inflation.

Sanjay said that fuel is a major contributor to rise in inflation. “BRS government won’t reduce VAT on petrol/diesel prices even though the Centre and majority of states reduced it. KCR continued to push the burden on common man,” he said.

The BJP leader also slammed the BRS for boycotting President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint session of both houses of the Parliament. “It is a shame that the BRS boycotted the speech when an adivasi woman was addressing both houses of Parliament for the first time after being elected President,” tweeted Sanjay, who is also a Member of Parliament.

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy has also attacked BRS for boycotting the President’s speech. “Skipping 1st joint address of Hon’ble President shows total lack of respect for a tribal daughter of India Time to respect India’s highest office and institutions,” tweeted the minister.

He alleged that BRS and Chief Minister KCR’s only focus is his own family. He said they have no respect for the Constitution, conventions, and common courtesies.

  • SRK’s ‘Pathaan’ sets cash register ringing with Rs 55 crore opening, highest for any Hindi movie

SRK’s ‘Pathaan’ sets cash register ringing with Rs 55 crore opening, highest for any Hindi movie

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan made a grand comeback to the big screen with his new Hindi film “Pathaan” raising a whopping Rs 55 crore nett and its dubbed versions bringing in additional Rs 2 crores on the opening day, the makers announced on Thursday.

According to production house Yash Raj Films (YRF), the movie’s nett day one collection stood at Rs 55 crore, the “highest grossing first day for a Hindi film”. “Pathaan” was also released in Tamil and Telugu on Wednesday.

The Siddharth Anand directorial, which faced boycott calls over the song “Besharam Rang”, marks Shah Rukh’s return to movies after a gap of over four years. His previous film was 2018’s “Zero”.

YRF said “Pathaan” had set multiple new records, including the “widest Hindi release of all time in India” and “highest grossing first day for a non-holiday release”.

The first day gross collection of the stylish spy thriller is also the “highest ever” in Shah Rukh’s career as well as for co-stars John Abraham and Deepika Padukone, director Anand and YRF, the studio stated in a press release.

“It is a historic day for Indian cinema and we are humbled to see the love and appreciation that is flowing for ‘Pathaan’ globally.

“For ‘Pathaan’ to shatter records in this fashion on a non holiday, just proves that the theatrical business is here to stay, provided we make films that entice people to come to the cinemas to witness a never seen before experience that entertains them thoroughly,” Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, said in a statement.

With its record day one haul, “Pathaan” has exceeded the expectations of the industry experts who were banking on the action spectacle to pull out Bollywood from the trenches of the pandemic and a string of box-office duds.

The film opened on Wednesday in over 5,000 screens across the country, including big cities like Delhi and Mumbai. The movie has a five-day extended opening weekend as it released just the day before Republic Day.

Till Tuesday, “Pathaan” sold with 4.19 lakh tickets sold in advance booking reflecting 80 per cent occupancy on day one, even for early morning shows beginning at 6 am or 7 am, said industry insiders.

Buoyed by the phenomenal response to the star-studded entertainer, production banner YRF on Wednesday said it had added a post midnight 12.30 am show across the country.

Besides, 300 more screens were added due to high demand, according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, taking the film’s total screen count to 8,500 worldwide.

“Pathaan” is the fourth film in producer Aditya Chopra’s ambitious spy universe, following Salman Khan’s “Ek Tha Tiger” (2012) and “Tiger Zinda Hai” (2017), and “War”, featuring Hrithik Roshan (2019).

The movie follows the titular spy Pathaan (Shah Rukh) who comes out of exile to stop terrorist group Outfit X, led by Jim (John), from launching a debilitating attack on India.

“Pathaan” also has a guest appearance by Salman as fellow spy Tiger.
