  • Amid record tourist arrivals; Shikara in high demand

    [ad_1]

    Jahangeer Ganaie

Srinagar, Apr 10: With highest numbers of tourists visiting Kashmir, the builders of shikaras in Kashmir say that demand is on rise as unemployed youth are earning their livelihood by signing up as a boatman in Dal Lake.

A third generation shikara maker, Ghulam Nabi of Baba Mohalla Dal Lake told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that since last 35 years, he has been making Shikara but demand has picked up since last year.

“As last year there was a good tourism season, the demand for Shikara has increased as more and more unemployed youth are starting Shikara so as to at least earn some money for themselves,” he said as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

According to him, they too have to face many challenges as timber is not easily available and rates are high.

“It usually takes a person around 15-20 days to make one Shikara and mostly deodar strongest timber is used in making it,” he said.

A Shikara costs around 2.5-3 lakhs and around 35 ft of timber is required to make a boat.

His Shikaras are in use in Mansar and Tawi in Jammu, Hyderabad, Bengal, Rajasthan and other places as well.

But he complained that the government has never supported them while requesting the authorities to give them timber for continuing their craft—(KNO)

  • High BP in men in their 30s linked with dementia risk in their 70s

High BP in men in their 30s linked with dementia risk in their 70s

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Having high blood pressure in your 30s is associated with worse brain health around age 75 like high dementia risk, especially for men, a new study has revealed.

The research, published in JAMA Network Open, found that the high blood pressure group had significantly lower regional brain volumes and worse white matter integrity. Both factors are associated with dementia.

The researchers from University of California-Davis Health compared magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans of older adults who had high blood pressure between the ages of 30 to 40 with older adults who had normal blood pressure.

    MS Education Academy

The research also showed that the negative brain changes in some regions — such as decreased grey matter volume and frontal cortex volume — were stronger in men.

The differences may be related to the protective benefits of estrogen before menopause.

“Treatment for dementia is extremely limited, so identifying modifiable risk and protective factors over the life course is key to reducing disease burden,” said Kristen M. George, an assistant professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences.

High blood pressure is an incredibly common and treatable risk factor associated with dementia.

“This study indicates hypertension status in early adulthood is important for brain health decades later,” George added.

Compared to participants with normal blood pressure, the brain scans of those transitioning to high blood pressure or with high blood pressure showed lower cerebral gray matter volume, frontal cortex volume and fractional anisotropy (a measure of brain connectivity).

The scores for men with high blood pressure were lower than those for women.

The study joins a growing body of evidence that cardiovascular risk factors in young adulthood are detrimental to late-life brain health.

“This study truly demonstrates the importance of early life risk factors, and that to age well, you need to take care of yourself throughout life — heart health is brain health,” said Rachel Whitmer, senior author of the study.

  • Widows Entitled To Family Pension: High Court

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: A woman who had ongoing divorce litigation with her late husband has been granted the right to receive family pension by the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. The court’s bench, led by Justice Rahul Bharti, stated that “earning family pension is a law given right” and can only be denied if the law allows it, which was not applicable in this case.

In 2017, the woman submitted a writ petition after her request for the release of family pension and other benefits was denied. Her husband, who had retired from the Border Security Force (BSF) as a Constable in 2015, passed away a year later. The woman subsequently applied to the Commanding Officer of the relevant Battalion in BSF for the release of the family pension to be granted to her. However, the Commanding officer stated that since the woman’s name was not found in the deceased’s pension records and due to the ongoing divorce proceedings, the case for the release of family pension to the widow could not be pursued.

The woman’s representative contended that she was entitled to the family pension because she had not remarried. However, the respondent authorities opposed the petition, claiming that the woman was receiving monthly maintenance from maintenance proceedings against her deceased husband during his lifetime. They also emphasized that her name was not listed in the pension papers of the deceased.

The High Court noted that “there was not even a single provision of law quoted in the reply/objections by the respondents as to on what basis they were denying her claim.” The court further interpreted that the respondents were implying that it was the deceased’s wish not to grant family pension to the petitioner after his death. However, the court ruled that such a situation could not be used by the respondents to deny the woman’s claim.

The High Court determined that the stance taken by the respondent authorities lacked legal merit and was merely frivolous. As a result, the court granted the woman’s petition and ordered the respondent authorities to approve and award the family pension in her favor, along with all applicable retrospective benefits in accordance with the regulations.

  • Gold rates surpass all-time high records in Hyderabad, other Indian cities

Gold rates surpass all-time high records in Hyderabad, other Indian cities

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Gold rates in Hyderabad and other Indian cities today broke all-time high records once again due to various reasons including economic uncertainties.

In Hyderabad, the rates of 10 grams of 24-carat and 22-carat yellow metal reached Rs 61360 and Rs 56250 respectively. Similarly, the rates of yellow metals in the international market hit a 13-month high, while silver rates reached a 12-month high.

The rates in other cities are as follows:

    MS Education Academy
    Cities22K (in rupees)24K (in rupees)
    Hyderabad5625061360
    New Delhi5640061510
    Mumbai5625061360
    Chennai5690062070
    Kolkata5625061360

Reasons for rise in gold rates in Hyderabad, other cities

According to market experts, the gold rates in Hyderabad and other Indian cities have climbed due to various reasons, including weakness in the US dollar rate, poor US data, peaking out US interest rates, economic uncertainties, and a rise in oil prices.

Interestingly, gold has outperformed the stock markets in 2023 so far, with its overall return surpassing that of the Sensex and Nifty 50. While the 24-carat gold rate has increased from Rs 55,200 to Rs 60,000 from January 1, 2023, to March 31, 2023, the Sensex and Nifty 50 have dipped from Rs 60,840.74 to Rs 58,991.52 and from Rs 18,105.30 to Rs 17,359.75, respectively, during the same period.

This means that gold has given an overall return of more than 8 percent, while the profits of the Sensex and Nifty 50 have turned negative in the current year so far.

Gold likely to touch Rs 68 thousand

Many experts predict that the demand for the safe haven has increased due to the banking-industry turmoil and concerns that the US economy may tip into a recession. As a result, the gold rates are likely to touch Rs 68,000 in Hyderabad and other cities in the current financial year, giving a return on investment (ROI) of 10-15 percent in FY24.

With the current uncertainty in the stock markets, investors are looking for a reliable and safe investment, and gold seems to be the right choice.
