Being single has a lot going for it, but £10k a year seems too high a price for the privilege | Emma John

    [ad_1]

Some claim that the first day in the third week of January is the most depressing one in the calendar. This year, Blue Monday arrived with added cruelty – for those of us who happen to be single, at least. A financial services firm chose just that miserable moment to reveal how much more expensive it is to live on your own than in a couple.

If you’re currently alone, and the post-holiday slump already has you feeling down about it, you may want to look away now. According to the brokers Hargreaves Lansdown, the cost of living premium for being single comes in at an average £860 a month, factoring in typical expenses from rent and energy bills to groceries, wifi and TV subscriptions.

That’s a whopping figure in isolation – an additional £10,000 a year in outgoings – and it wounds even deeper when you compare it with what your partnered friends are paying. The average couple spend £991 per person, so if you’re living alone you’re spending nearly twice the amount they are on the exact same goods and services. For those who didn’t choose their solo state, it’s adding impecuniousness to injury.

As a long-term single, I’ve become inured to the injustice of the single supplement – the one that demands I pay extra for eating less breakfast and soiling fewer towels. I scoff at the misleadingly titled “discount” I receive from the council, which taxes me 75% of the married rate for using only 50% of the services (and arguably less, because I’m childless).

Still, I’ve rarely wasted much time wondering how life without a partner affects my finances. That’s not because I’m comfortably cushioned by personal wealth (which would be nice) but because I have always assumed these things even out overall. Since I don’t share my worldly goods with another person, I have never watched my bank account being depleted by someone making purchases I neither want nor need. Nor have I copped the eye-watering expense of raising children or had to stump up the galling legal fees and potentially lifelong financial commitments of a divorce.

There is another reason I’ve resisted contemplating the economic disadvantages of living alone. Women are already conditioned to perceive the unpartnered life as one of lack or absence, if not downright misery. Challenging that Bridget Jones default can be hard work and a poor-me mindset doesn’t help. As someone who always pictured herself married, I have learned the hard way not to fixate on the negatives of singlehood.

Today’s climate of uncertainty, inequality and inflation is making the issue impossible to ignore. Much as I’ve loved Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters, I can’t watch Sharon Horgan’s Eva living alone in an enormous family home without wondering how she affords to heat it. Seeing last week’s figures in stone cold print has finally shaken me out of my state of denial. An extra 10 grand a year? The comparative financial benefits of singledom and coupledom aren’t swings and roundabouts at all, they’re snakes and ladders.

More noteworthy than the vast disparity itself, one that the majority of single people have long intuited, is how we respond to it. Whatever sympathy the news may elicit for ourselves or our single friends is soon followed by a sense of impotence or even outright ambivalence. This isn’t the kind of inequality we feel compelled to challenge or change. Maybe it’s because we see singleness as a temporary status. Or maybe because we can’t shift the suspicion that a solo life is a self-indulgent one.

In the 18th century, social commentators in Britain argued for a tax on bachelors and spinsters, who were considered to contribute nothing concrete to the productivity of the nation. Frances Brooke, writing a series of articles as “Mary Singleton”, proposed that unmarried men over the age of 30 pay a shilling in the pound and unmarried women sixpence. “The very circumstance of having no burden upon their fortunes, but what merely concerns themselves, makes them of all others, the fittest to be assessed extraordinarily,” she wrote, adding that she would herself pay such a due “with the greatest pleasure”.

Living alone is a privilege, but it can also be a burden. In her brilliant book about spinsterhood, She I Dare Not Name, Donna Ward argues that “the crucial conversation to have is about the reality of this life – the social, psychological and financial implications of it and the way legislators, friends, family and neighbours can support those living it”. Most single people are living on one income in a dual-income economy – and one whose lawmakers make the fallacious assumption that they have more disposable income than their coupled counterparts.

The American social psychologist Bella DePaulo has long campaigned for more awareness of the way that society invisibly discriminates against those without partners – expecting more of them in the workplace, for instance, then robbing them through a tax system that prioritises married and family units. Maybe it is time to make a fuss about that single supplement.

J&K’s security grid on high alert ahead of R-Day, BJY

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Jan 21: Jammu and Kashmir’s security grid has been put on a high alert in the wake of upcoming Republic Day and the ensuing Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY) while as frisking has been intensified in Srinagar, Jammu, highways, and sensitive areas of the Union Territory (UT).

A senior police official told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that for the R-Day, security grid has been tightened and forces including police and CRPF have been deployed across the UT and all sorts of arrangements are in place to ensure smooth passage of all official functions of January 26.

“This time around, we have a double challenge—one of R-Day and another of BJY. Extra deployments have been made wherever necessary and all security agencies have been directed to maintain a highest level of alertness to foil the evil designs,” the official said, wishing not to be named.

BJY led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has already entered Jammu and is scheduled to reach Srinagar on January 30

He said that all vigil is being maintained on the highways, sensitive areas and in all major cities and towns. “In Jammu city, deployment has been made for both R-day and the BJY while similar arrangements have been put in place in Srinagar district,” the officer said.

Eye-witnesses told KNO that in Jammu city, police and paramilitary CRPF men have launched massive frisking operations while a close watch is being maintained on the suspects. In Srinagar, police including the women police and CRPF have started intense frisking operations with commuters travelling on four-wheelers and two-wheelers being frisked thoroughly. “I was travelling from Pantha Chowk to Sonwar and was stopped by CRPF men. I was asked to show the I-D card. The CRPF men also took my photograph and when I asked why he took the snap, he replied that he had to show it to his superior,” said Showkat Ahmed, a resident of Pantha Chowk.

Police sources said that as part of the heightened security grid for peaceful conduct of R-Day and BJY, all the CCTVs have been made functional in Srinagar and in all districts of Kashmir and movement of vehicles, pedestrians is being closely watched from the respective control rooms of police. A police source said that it was likely to go for aerial surveillance through drones in Srinagar and Jammu on January 26 to maintain aerial vigil. “We may use drones a day ahead of R-Day,” he said. “Night patrolling is also being conducted in several areas of Kashmir and Jammu.”

Many other commuters and auto-drivers said that they were stopped at multiple points from Dalgate to Lal Chowk and thoroughly frisked. The main R-Day function will be held at Jammu where LG Manoj Sinha will unfurl the tri-colour. In Srinagar, LG’s advisor, Rajiv Rai Bhatnagar will take the salute of the parade and also hoist the national flag. Pertinently, LG Sinha told reporters at Zewan, Srinagar on January 20, that elaborate security arrangements have been made to facilitate BJY. Earlier, DGP Dilbagh Singh had stated that all security measures were in place for the smooth conduct of all official functions on R-Day eve across the UT—(KNO)

  • The Eagles are flying high entering the playoffs. Why is Philly so tense?

The Eagles are flying high entering the playoffs. Why is Philly so tense?

    [ad_1]

Not long after the Philadelphia Eagles were installed as seven-and-a-half-point favorites over the New York Giants for their NFC divisional playoff game on Saturday night, skepticism began seeping through this passionate-yet-gloomy sports town – as it always does.

Seven-and-a-half points, great. But, wait. Can we beat the Giants three times this year?

The fans had to know. Proper statistics needed to be Googled, stories needed to be chased. The findings looked conclusive: Since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970, a team that had won two regular-season games over another team has won 15 of 24 playoff games if they met again in the playoffs. San Francisco beat Seattle last Saturday for the third time this season.

All that would seem to be good news for the Eagles (14-3), who manhandled the Giants (10-7-1) on 11 December, 48-22, then held off the Giants three weeks later, 22-16, to break their first losing streak of the season, and earn valuable home-field advantage through the NFC playoffs.

Jalen Hurts, the versatile and imperturbable Eagles’ quarterback, returned from a shoulder injury in the rematch and looked fine, even though Philadelphia thinned the playbook to limit Hurts’s exposure. It helped that New York, who were locked into a playoff berth, rested several starters, including quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley.

However, more Philadelphia fans than you’d think looked at the 15-of-24 stat another way: But those series-winning teams compiled a 1.000 winning percentage in the regular season – but were only .625 in the playoffs! See? Their chances actually decrease! MAYDAY!

Marcus Hayes wrote a column, anyway, that was published on the front page Tuesday of the Philadelphia Inquirer. THE PLAYOFFS ARE LINING UP FOR EAGLES, read the all-uppercase headline. His first paragraph: “The Eagles got lucky on wild-card weekend. They watched an overrated Giants team beat a mirage in Minnesota.”

“The Eagles demolished them early in the season,” Hayes later told the Guardian. “The Giants finished 2-5-1. The Eagles have an advantage at every position. And fans love to fabricate worry. Teams sweep about 70% of the time. Also: Eagles had a bye in the first round of the playoffs.”

The Minnesota Vikings, the Giants’ victims in the first round of the playoffs, were indeed Nordic, Lite: The Vikings won 13 of 17 regular-season games despite being outscored by their opponents by an aggregate 427-424. (The Eagles beat the Vikings during the season.)

And yet, Philadelphia fans are diehard worry-fabricators. They have material. The Eagles won 13 of their first 14 games but have not played well since the first Giants game. Hurts, it turned out, was hurting in the last game against the Giants. Nick Sirianni, the Eagles’ head coach, has never won a playoff game – although, in mitigation, this is only his second year in the role.

“Well, there is that fatalism. It is part of the fabric in the city since 1964,” the longtime Philadelphia sports-talk host Glen Macnow, referring to the Phillies’ epic late-season collapse in that year’s National League pennant race, told the Guardian. “I would have hoped that the World Series win in 2008 and the Super Bowl in 2017 would have washed that away. But it’s back.

“It’s funny. I think Philadelphia fans were much more comfortable being the underdog in 2017 than they are being the favorite this year.”

    Philadelphia Eagles fans
Eagles fans largely took over MetLife Stadium for Philadelphia’s 48-22 over the Giants in their first meeting last month in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Photograph: Al Bello/Getty Images

In 2017, the Eagles (13-3) won home-field advantage for the NFC playoffs but were made the underdogs in games against Atlanta and Minnesota because quarterback Carson Wentz had torn up his knee in the 13th game of the regular season. The Eagles, behind backup Nick Foles, won both games, then toppled the favored New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.

The Eagles got a big kick out of that slight themselves, pulling on Halloween dog masks after the victory over Atlanta. Philadelphia fans scooped up “Philadelphia Underdog” T-shirts after Halloween dog masks disappeared off the shelves of novelty stores in Philadelphia.

The 2022 Philadelphia Phillies, too, became beloved underdogs, claiming the final playoff spot in the 160th of 162 regular-season games, then eliminating three favorites – St Louis, Atlanta and San Diego – before losing in the World Series to the Houston Astros.

Howard Eskin, another longtime sports-talk radio host in Philadelphia, tried to calm down the populace by pointing out on Twitter that playoff teams playing their third straight game on the road, which the Giants will do this weekend, have a 10-37 record since 1990.

Eskin is an accomplished pot-stirrer, though, and he’d earlier mentioned the playoff record of teams that had swept a regular-season opponent. So the first comment on his 10-37 tweet came from someone with a Phillies logo as an avatar: “All the pressure is on the Eagles. No one expects the Giants to win. They have nothing to lose, but to come out and play hard.”

But the Eagles are 2-2 since the first Giants’ game, outscored by six total points. Lane Johnson, the impenetrable Philadelphia right tackle, plans to play Saturday, but he has missed two games with a torn abdominal muscle that will require off-season surgery.

There was just too much to worry about. Then Fox Sports announced that Joe Davis will be providing the play-by-play for Saturday’s game. Davis, the Philadelphia media quickly pointed out, called many of the Phillies’ games in their World Series march.

And then the NFL announced Wednesday that the officiating crew led by Clete Blakeman will call the Eagles-Giants game. The Eagles, it was noted, are 13-1 in games that have been called by crews led by Blakeman – including the 11 December Philadelphia victory.

The horizon was brightening for Philadelphia fans, indeed. But they still need to play the actual football game. The fact that the game starts at 8.15pm gives Eagles fans all day to get lubricated for the game, true. But they also have all day to fret over a cruel downfall, too.

The Inquirer primed the pump by running another front-page story Friday with this teaser: With the Eagles a playoff favorite, Philly finds itself in a weird and wonderful place. Can we handle it?

“By Sunday morning, the answer to CAN NICK SIRIANNI WIN A PLAYOFF GAME??!! needs to be yes, or the entire region will lose its mind,” the veteran Philadelphia sports reporter Les Bowen posted on his Facebook page.

  • Indonesia claim historic first victory to end U19 Women’s T20 WC on high

Indonesia claim historic first victory to end U19 Women’s T20 WC on high

    [ad_1]

Benoni: Indonesia on Friday scripted history as they claimed their first-ever victory in ICC global tournament after beating Zimbabwe by three wickets in a play-off match to finish the Under19 Women’s T20 World Cup on a high, here.

Indonesia got off to a flier after being asked to bowl first, as captain Ni Luh Dewi bowled both of the Zimbabwe openers for golden ducks in the first three balls of the innings. And the skipper picked up a third wicket in her second over to leave the score at 8/3 and with Indonesia well on top.

Zimbabwe hunkered down to try and set some sort of a platform, and it somewhat reaped rewards later in the innings despite none of the top six scorings more than 13.

Tawana Marumani and Danielle Meikle were the players to build on the platform down the order, with both scoring 20 from 19 balls to lift their side to 86/8 from the 20 overs and something to work with.

That total could have been slightly higher were it not for the outstanding Dewi, who came back to remove both of the set batters and complete the tournament’s first five-wicket-haul.

Early wickets were also a feature of the chase, with three back in the hutch with just 23 runs on the board in the opening four overs as Kelis Ndhlovu (who finished with 3/8 from four overs) produced some magic with the ball.

Dewi’s 14 from 13 did provide some early impetus, and a 31-run partnership between Thersiana We and Gusti Ulansari moved Indonesia close to a famous win. But Zimbabwe threatened to come back in the see-saw encounter when Chipo Moyo (3/12) took two wickets in an over to give her side hope.

However, Indonesia’s numbers eight and nine got them over the line, with Ni Indriyani unbeaten on 9 not out from 11 and Ni Suarniasih scoring the winning run in her run-a-ball 12 not out.
Indonesia might not have won the inaugural ICC Under19 Women’s T20 World Cup, but they definitely won many hearts during their stay in South Africa.

Brief scores: Zimbabwe 86 for 8 in 20 overs (Danielle Meikle 20, Tawana Marumani 20, Adel Zimunu 13, Ni Luh Ketut Wesika Ratna Dewi five for 18, Ni Kadek Ariani two for 7) lost to Indonesia 87 for 7 in 18 overs (Ni Luh Ketut Wesika Ratna Dewi 14, Thersiana Penu We 14, Ni Made Suarniasih 12 not out, Kelis Ndhlovu three for 8, Chipo Moyo three for 12) by three wickets.

High Court upset over appointment of departmental advisers in AP

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh High Court has expressed its displeasure over the appointment of advisers for various departments by the government. The High Court expressed surprise that a special adviser has been appointed for the welfare of government employees.

The court questions the need to appoint a consultant for payment of TA and DA of employees. The court said that an alternative government can be formed in case of appointment of advisor for each department.

Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court Prashant Mishra heard the petition challenging GO 630. The Public Interest Litigation was filed by social activist Rajshekhar Rao against the appointment of N. Chandrasekhar Reddy as the advisor for the welfare of government employees which was challenged in the High Court.

In the preliminary hearing, the court strongly objected to the appointment of advisers. Senior advocate Mahindranath Reddy, on behalf of government advisor Chandrasekhar Reddy, argued in favor of the appointment of advisors in the court. He said that the notice issued by the court has not been received. The court asked the lawyer that instead of coming to the court based on media reports, it is better to observe the list of cases. The court has fixed the next hearing on February 2 while directing the parties to file affidavits.
