  • ‘Khelo India Winter Games’: Heavy Winds Force Organisers’ To Partly Call Off Day 2 Activities

    Srinagar, Feb 11 (GNS): Heavy winds played a spoilsport on Day 2 at third edition of ‘Khelo India Games’, being held at famous ski-resort Gulmarg, as the organizers’ had to partly call off multiple sports activities as a precautionary measure.

    As learnt by GNS, the strong winds blew far and wide at the sports venue, especially on Kongdori heights. The organisers’ (Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council) as a sort of precautionary measure called off sports activities at Alpine G Slalom, Kongdori, while the main/lower Gulmarg saw the activities being conducted normally.

    An official told GNS that the winds though a routine occurrence at Gulmarg, the suspension of activities was decided for the overall safety of participants.

    The games scheduled for day 2 at Golf Club included; Cross Country 15 Km Sprint Senior Men, Cross Country 10 Km Sprint Senior women, Cross Country 2 Km Sprint Junior Boys, Cross Country 1.5 Km Sprint Junior Girls, Bobsleighing & Skeleton and Snow Shoe long distance event of men and women category.

    The Ice hockey and Ice-skating competitions were held at Rink Gulmarg.

    Notably, the four day edition kicked off with much anticipation and fanfare at the famous ski-resort on February 10 – and will culminate on February 14, 2023. (GNS)

    Jammu: A house was damaged amid heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, prompting the police to reach out to the family with essential items on Tuesday, officials said.

    Due to the heavy snowfall on Monday, the house of Lal Din in Singpora area was damaged, they said, adding that a police team provided necessary items likes blankets, ration and other household items to the family.

    Senior Superintendent of Police Kishtwar Khalil Poswal assured all possible help in future to them.

    A police team along with members of a NGO also visited Singpora, Passerkote and Vohal areas and took stock of the losses due to the recent snowfall.

    Srinagar, Jan 29 : As a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) affected J&K and adjoining areas this afternoon, weather department on Sunday said that widespread light to moderate snow in plains and rain (in Jammu) was expected tonight and on January 30.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that moderate to heavy snowfall over middle and higher reaches was likely under the influence of the weather system.

    “Under the influence of (the weather) system, widespread light to moderate snow in plains/rain( in jmu) & moderate to heavy snowfall over middle reaches and higher reaches with heavy to very heavy over higher reaches of Pirpanjal, South Kashmir, Doda-Kistawar etc. most likely during tonight to tomorrow afternoon and gradual decrease thereafter (>75% chance),” he said.

    On January 31, he said that cloudy weather with light snow/rain at isolated to scattered places was expected on January 31. “From 1st-4th February, partly cloudy weather is expected”.

    He said that the weather system was likely to cause snow avalanche in the areas prone to them for few days and was also likely to affect Surface and Air transportation on Monday.

    Regarding temperature, he said that Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.4°C against 1.7°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was below normal by 1.4°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of minus 2.8°C against 0.2°C on the previous night and it was 0.2°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 5.6°C against minus 6.9°C on the previous night and it was 0.5°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of minus 2.7°C against minus 0.7°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

    Banihal recorded a low of 2.0°C (above normal by 2.2°C), Batote 4.0°C (above normal by 2.3°C), Katra 7.6°C (0.7°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 1.4°C (2.2°C below normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 13.0°C and minus 10.6°C respectively, the official said.

    Srinagar, Jan 28 (GNS): As the 40-day harsh winter period, Chilla-i-Kalan, nears to an end, the weather department on Saturday issued a yellow warning for heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir on January 30.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS widespread moderate snow and rain ( in Jammu) with “heavy” snowfall in Pirpanjal, South Kashmir, Doda-Kistawar etc.( more than 75% chances) was likely on Monday. 

    On January 31, the MeT official said, light to moderate snow and rain was expected at scattered places.

    There are four types of colour codes signifying the level of caution: green which means no action, yellow—situation to be watched, orange–government agencies need to be prepared for severe weather and red –action needed by the agencies.

    He said the weather system may cause snow avalanches in the areas prone to them. It may likely to affect surface and air transportation on Monday, he said. Power supply may also get affected. 

     “People are advised not to venture out in avalanche prone areas, unless emergency,” he said, adding, “Passengers are advised to travel after confirmation of road status from concerned traffic police”.

    Regarding temperature, he said that Srinagar recorded a low of 1.7°C against 1.2°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 2.7°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 0.2°C against minus 0.6°C on the previous night and it was 2.8°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.
