    Heavy rains continue to lash Karnataka, one killed by lightning

    Bengaluru: Heavy rains continued to lash poll-bound Karnataka on Tuesday, leaving one man dead in Belagavi district.

    The rains came as the state is all set to go for polls on Wednesday (May 10) for crucial Assembly elections which are considered as semi-finals to 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

    The meteorological department has predicted heavy rains in the state for another five days.

    Yellow alert has been issued to the south and north interior region and coastal regions. Meanwhile, large scale damages have been reported from many districts of the state due to heavy rains.

    Parlesh Rathod, a resident of Obalapura village in Ramadurg taluk of Belagavi , died on the spot on Tuesday following a lighting strike as heavy rains and thunderstorms were reported in most parts of the district.

    Capital city Bengaluru has been turned into a “hill station” following drizzle and cloudy atmosphere. Heavy rains on Monday evening causing severe inconvenience to commuters.

    A huge tree in the premises of the government school converted into polling station at Kotanuru in Kalaburgi district has been uprooted, disrupting the preparations for the polling. The authorities were clearing the debris from the premises.

    Heavy rains have lashed many parts of the Gadag district and authorities are worried over the situation on polling day if the heavy rains continue.

    The rains have uprooted trees in Keshwapura road in Hubballi. The forceful winds have brought down the pandal installed to distribute voting machines in the premises of a school there.

    Srinagar, May 8: District administration Ramban has ordered for closure of all schools, upto Class 8, for the day, amid ongoing heavy rains across the district.

    Deputy Commissioner Ramban Mussarat Islam, as per GNS, ordered for the closure of the schools albeit asking for scheduled conduct of exams, if any, in the district.

    “All Schools (Government & Private) up to middle level (Class 8) in Ramban District shall remain closed today in view of heavy rains. However, exams if any, shall be held as per schedule”, Deputy Commissioner Ramban said.

    In the meantime, the administration has also urged people to ensure their children do not go anywhere near rivers and nallahs due to risen water levels.

    “People are advised to ensure their children do not go anywhere near rivers and nallahs as water level has risen due to incessant rains”, the DC office wrote on its Twitter handle. (GNS)

    Hyderabad: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that rains in Andhra Pradesh will continue for the next three days in view of cyclone Mocha. The IMD previously stated that Mocha is anticipated to strike the eastern coast between May 7 and May 9.

    Therefore, for the next three days, the isolated areas of the eastern coast will experience moderate to heavy rain.

    IMD stated in its bulletin, “Thunderstorm accompanied by lighting is expected at isolated places over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and South Coastal Andhra Prades and Thunderstorm coupled with lighting and gusty winds with 30-4kmph speed is expected at isolated places over Rayalaseema.”

    Meanwhile, other weather sources have forecasted that afternoon rain will occur in several districts like Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram, ASR, Anakapalli, Eluru, Ubhaya Godavari, NTR, Guntur, Krishna, Palnadu, Prakasam, Nellore, Tirupati, Nandyala, Chittoor, and portions of Kadapa and Annamayya districts.

    The rains are a result of instability of the wind in the Bay of Bengal which has started reaching to Andhra Pradesh.

    Hyderabad: After the heavy rains coupled with thunderstorms lashed the city, on and off for several days, the summer weather is expected to settle back as the rains will be shifting to Andhra Pradesh during the next three days.

    The cloudiness and thunderstorm over the state on most days during the week have bought down the maximum temperatures, 3 to 5 degrees Celcius below normal over most of the districts.

    According to the most recent forecast from the India Meteorological Department-Hyderabad (IMD-H), the city will receive light to moderate rainfall for the next two days while there are chances of thundershowers to occur on Thursday and Friday.

    The forecast predicts scattered rainfall later in the week ruling out the chances of heavy rains.

    However, on Monday, isolated places in the state are most likely to receive heavy rainfall. An IMD report has predicted that the districts of Adilabad, KomaramBheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagityal, Karimnagar, Peddapally, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthi, Narayanpet and Jogulamba Gadwal will be affected.

    “Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (40-50 KMPH) very likely to occur at isolated places in the many districts of Telangana,” stated their weather report.

    The daily report by the Telangana State Development Planning Society states that maximum temperatures are expected to be in the range of 35 degrees to 38 degrees Celcius, while the minimum temperatures are in the range of 22 degrees to 25 degrees Celcius.

    Talking about the highest rainfall hit areas in Telangana, Jangaon recorded 123.5 mm, the highest portion of rainfall, while Bhongir in Yadadri recorded the lowest with 119.5 mm.

    Coming to zones under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Shaikpet recorded the highest rainfall (106 mm), followed by Khajaguda (96.8 mm), Ramanthapur (82 mm), Anandbagh (81.3 mm) and Srinagar colony (80 mm).

    TSDPS’s report revealed that the maximum temperatures in the GHMC zones are expected to be in the range of 33 degrees to 35 degrees Celcius, while the minimum temperatures are to be in the range of 22 degrees to 24 degrees Celcius.

    Damage caused by massive rains in Hyderabad on Sunday

    After a massive storm hit the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Disaster Response Force (DRF) retrieved 19 bikes from city nalas.

    The DRF team attended to 59 complaints in the city after heavy rainfall. 15 complaints were regarding water stagnation, 25 were about uprooted trees and tree branches that were obstructing traffic and 19 were regarding vehicles that were washed away into nala.

    DRF cleared catch-pits, and garbage choking the nalas, drained out water from low-lying areas, removed tangled wires and pumped out water from apartment cellars.

    The team responded to complaints from Kalasiguda, Lalapet, Lingampally, Hakimpet (Karwan), Tolichowki, Nallakunta, Padma Rao Nagar, Sudarshan Nagar Colony in Serilingampally and others. 

    Heavy rains trigger inflows into Musi Project

    The inflow to the Nalgonda Musi project increased to 1860 cusecs from Monday morning due to heavy rains in the upper areas.

    The water level in the project reached 632.7 feet as against the full reservoir level of 645 feet.

    The current water storage in the project was 1.7 tmcs as against the full storage capacity of 645 tmcs.

    Suryapet, Mellacheruvu, Mattampally, Chivvemla, Huzurnagar and Palakeerdu mandals witnessed moderate rain on Monday morning.

    However, no crop damage was reported.

    The south and west parts of Hyderabad are receiving heavy rains which are expected to continue for the next one to two hours.

    Various netizens on Twitter are sharing rain updates, warning others to stay indoors.

    Muscat: The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) of the Sultanate of Oman, announced that two deaths had been recorded after three vehicles were swept away in floodwaters in Wadi Al Batha, Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, local media reported.

    The Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) sent rescue teams to the area after receiving a report about the incident on Wednesday evening.

    The CDAA said in a statement, “In cooperation with the Police Command of the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, the bodies of two citizens, one man and one woman were found in the stream of Wadi Al-Batha in the Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali.”

    As per Times of Oman, the Omani citizens were among nine people who were missing after three cars were caught in the floods.

    Six people were rescued. A search is continuing for the other one.

    The Civil Aviation Authority called on everyone to take precautions and caution during thunderstorms, not to cross valleys, avoid low places, and not go to the sea during the warning period.

    According to Royal Decree No. (38/2016) of the Traffic Act, whoever intentionally crosses valleys and endangers his life or the lives of others can be punished with three months imprisonment and a fine of 500 Omani Riyals, or one of these two penalties.

    Many parts of Oman are witnessing heavy rain and the Omani Meteorological Office has warned that the rain will continue until Saturday, April 29.

    The highest rainfall is expected in the North and South Al Sharqiyah and Al Dakhiliyah governorates.

    Several roads in Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan have already been cut off due to overflowing wadis, and authorities have advised people to take extra precautions while travelling.

    Hyderabad: Parts of Telangana are likely to witness severe hailstorms over the next 1 to 2 hrs, covering different districts. Videos of hailstorms showering Kamareddy were also posted by users on social media.

    A few weeks earlier Hyderabad and parts of Telangana also witnessed similar weather which brought down the temperature to a considerable extent in the peak summer heat.

    Severe rainfall is expected in Kamareddy, Nizamabad, Sircilla, Medak, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Karimnagar, and Sangareddy district while Hyderabad is expected to receive thunderstorms in the evening.

    The current temperature in Hyderabad as of 6 PM is 32 degree celsius while the highest temperature of 38.5 degree celsius was recorded in Shaikpet on Monday.

    A highest temperature of 41.9 degree celsius was recorded in Julurpad, Bhadradri Kothagudem district, as per the Telangana State Planning Development Society (TSPDS).

    TSPDS forecasted that light to moderate thundershowers in few places across the state and the city for the next three days.
