  • Blow hot, Blow Cold: India is suffering more heat waves; lesser cold waves

Blow hot, Blow Cold: India is suffering more heat waves; lesser cold waves

    [ad_1]

Heat waves in Summers. Cold waves in Winters. It’s quite normal and not much of a News, isn’t it?

Wait, climate experts have just found that in India the weather patterns are fast changing and we are suffering more heat waves in Summers and less cold waves in Winters in the past decade.

Now, this is not welcome news both for people and agriculture.

    MS Education Academy

With summer already sizzling with heat and temperatures shooting up all over the country, the findings of the study carried out by the University of Hyderabad (UoH), attain significance. The research paper was published in the Journal of Earth Sciences System.

The study led by Aninda Bhattacharya of the Department of Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences has analysed data of daily (max & min) temperatures from 1970-2019. The idea was to investigate the trend in the frequency of occurrence of days with anomalously high temperatures (referred to as heat waves) and days with anomalously low temperature (referred to as cold waves) over different climatic regions of India.

Their conclusion was that heat waves have become more common in summer while cold waves have less so common in winter in the recent decade in India. Heat waves and cold waves have severe adverse impacts on agriculture, human health and industrial production, they said in their publication.

Human influence on the climate system is predominant and proven. Human-caused (anthropogenic) climate change has caused roughly one degrees Celsius increase in global average surface temperature since the pre-industrial era. Climate change has worsened the frequency, intensity, and impacts of some of the weather events such as heat waves and cold waves, the researchers from the UoH say.

    The Indian scenario

India is broadly divided into four major climatic zones:

    1. Montane (climate is harsher, with lower temperatures in mountainous regions)
    2. Subtropical humid climate
    3. Arid and semi-arid climate
    4. Dry and wet tropical climate

Now, a heat wave is defined as the occurrence of anomalously higher temperatures for consecutive three days or more. The authors found that heat wave events are increasing at the rate of 0.6 events per decade.

Similarly, a cold wave is defined as the occurrence of anomalously lower temperatures for consecutive three days or more. The authors found that cold wave events are decreasing at the rate of 0.4 events per decade.

Their overall observations based on nearly 40 years of data points to days with anomalously higher temperatures increasing during summer every year while the days with anomalously lower temperatures are decreasing during winter every year.

The authors also deduced the opposite trends in heat waves and cold waves. For instance, heat waves are more common over the arid and semi-arid climatic region while cold waves are less so common over the same region.

To facilitate the complicated observational and analytical study, the researchers compared the current generation computer models used to predict future climate with India Meteorological Department (IMD) observations.

The Authors found that the models fail to capture the observed spatial features in the trend in the frequency of occurrence of heat waves and cold waves in toto over India. This underlines the need for a better process-level understanding of the factors governing these extreme events and their representations in the models over the Indian region.

This study was led by Aninda Bhattacharya, Dr. Abin Thomas, and Dr Vijay Kanawade from the Centre of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, School of Physics at the University of Hyderabad, in collaboration with Prof Chandan Sarangi from IIT Madras, Dr P. S. Roy from World Resources Institute (WRI) and Dr Vijay K. Soni from India Meteorological Department, Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi.

The weather department has already forecast a severe month of April heat across most parts of the country. Other climate studies have also shown an increasing trend of cyclones (pre monsoon) period in the Arabian Sea, which is leading to an increase in temperatures and overall climate situation over the country in the last few years. They also linked it to unusually heavy rainfall episodes.

    The IMD forecast for monsoon

Meanwhile, India is expected to get normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon season despite the evolving El Nino conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The IMD prediction is in variance with the forecast of Skymet Weather, a private forecasting agency which has predicted “below-normal” monsoon rains in the country. Skymet also does an annual monsoon forecast.

El Nino, which is the warming of the waters in the Pacific Ocean near South America, is generally associated with the weakening of monsoon winds and dry weather in India. It is one of the key parameters of the 15 plus parameter model employed by the IMD to make its annual long term mo soon forecast that is critical for the planning of agriculture and water resources management.

Four die of heat stroke in Telangana

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Four people have lost their lives in 24 hours due to rising temperature in Telangana. Officials of the Meteorological and Health Department advised the public to avoid leaving their homes unnecessarily and take measures to protect the neck and ears of those who are going out in the sun.

More than four districts of Telangana recorded temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius last day and 10 districts recorded 43 degrees Celsius. In Adilabad district, two people were confirmed to have died due to heat stroke, while one person each died due to heat stroke in Mancherial and Warangal.

In Adilabad, a 70-year-old farmer, identified as S. Lingaiah, died while working in the scorching sun in the fields, while in Nirmal, 45-year-old P Rajeshwar, who was working on the banks of a pond under the MGNREGS scheme, died of a sudden heart attack. In Mancharpal, 55-year-old fruit vendor L. Srinivas also died of heat stroke, while in Warangal, 67-year-old was also confirmed dead due to heat stroke.

    MS Education Academy

On the increase in the intensity of heat, officials say that the temperature may increase further this week. In the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the temperature crossed 40 degrees Celsius on Thursday, adding heat on the roads due to intense sunshine and dry weather.

According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature in the city was recorded at 36 degrees while the maximum temperature was recorded at 40.7 degrees. There is a possibility of a drop in temperature in the state after April 17 and people will get some relief from the heat next week. There is also the possibility of unseasonal rains which can decline the intensity of heat, but before April 17, the weather will remain completely dry and the intensity of heat will continue to increase.

After first list of candidates Karnataka BJP faces heat with many felt deserted

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Discontent seems to be brewing within the ruling BJP in Karnataka, with the party facing the heat after announcing its first list of candidates for the May 10 Assembly polls, as some ticket aspirants who missed the bus openly expressed displeasure.

With the BJP denying him the ticket from Athani, former Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi on Wednesday announced his decision to resign from the primary membership of the party.

Minister and six-time MLA S Angara from Sullia constituency in Dakshina Kannada district announced his retirement from politics today, after failing to get a ticket again.

    MS Education Academy

Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat, who was also overlooked by BJP, said he was deeply pained by the treatment meted out to him by the party.

BJP MLC R Shankar, who was an aspirant for Ranebennur Assembly seat, resigned as legislator today after the party ignored his request.

After a series of deliberations, the BJP on Tuesday announced its first list of 189 candidates out of a total 224.

Reacting to the developments, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the party will speak to all those disgruntled and will take care of their concerns.

“I have certainly made a decision. I have decided to resign from the primary membership of the party,” Savadi, a BJP MLC, said in a press conference in the district headquarters town of Belagavi.

Amid speculation that he may join the Congress, the 63-year-old three-time MLA said he will make a “strong decision” on Thursday evening and start working on it from Friday.

Sitting MLA Mahesh Kumathalli, who was backed by BJP leader and former Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi, was given a ticket in Athani in Belagavi district. Kumathalli was among the group of defectors, including Jarkiholi, who helped the BJP to bring down the Congress-JD(S) coalition and form its government under the leadership of B S Yediyurappa in 2019.

A visibly aggrieved Angara said that this was not the way an MLA who toiled for the party with dedication was to be treated. “I am not disgruntled for being denied a ticket by the party. But this is not a way to honour (me) for working for the party and society without any black spot…. There is no value for honesty”.

The 58-year-old said he was retiring from politics and he will not work for the party any more. The BJP has nominated Bhagirathi Murulya as its candidate from Sullia.

“I am not sad over the party’s decision, but I am pained by the way the party has treated me,” Raghupati Bhat said, breaking into tears while speaking to the media.

He said not even the district unit president of the party had called to inform him about the party’s decision and he came to know of it from television channels.

Describing the party’s official candidate Yashpal Suvarna as “my boy”, Bhat said he had always supported Suvarna’s growth in the party. He said he was so shocked that he could not take an immediate decision on his next course of action.

According to party sources, while deciding tickets, the BJP seems to have adopted a policy of trying to replace some seniors and those nearing “retirement” (75 years of age), while asking leaders to withdraw from the fray if they want tickets for their children. “This may be seen in the second list too,” said a BJP functionary.

Former Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa had on Tuesday told the party’s central leadership that he wishes to retire from electoral politics and requested it to not consider fielding him in the Assembly polls. Former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said the party top brass had told him to make way for youngsters but asserted he wants to contest one last time.

The party has not announced tickets yet for Shivamogga and Hubballi-Dharwad Central, the seats represented by Eshwarappa and Shettar in the first list.

Before leaving for Delhi to meet the central leadership, Shettar in Hubballi today said he wishes to make an exit from politics in a respectful manner and not the way he was asked to make way for others.

“No one has contacted me so far after Nadda ji (BJP National President J P Nadda) called me to Delhi for discussions….I’m going with a positive mindset and in the interest of the party…based on what transpires there I will decide on my future course,” he said.

Shetter who reached Delhi later in the day, conveyed his wish to contest in the May 10 assembly polls in a meeting with party president Nadda, after openly expressing his unhappiness over reports that he may be denied a ticket.

After meeting Nadda, Shettar told reporters that he cited his experience, including his six wins in assembly polls, and was told by the party president that the issue will be discussed with other senior leaders.

Meanwhile, Eshwarappa’s supporters in Shivamogga held several rounds of meetings to put pressure on the party to make him withdraw his retirement or to give the ticket to his son K E Kantesh.

Reacting to allegations by disgruntled leaders and legislators that the party did not treat them with respect, Bommai in Mangaluru said, “We are talking to all of them, the party made them legislators or leaders. The party has treated them with respect and will continue to do so. Also, the party will protect their political future.”

Noting that such reactions are natural during elections, to a question on Savadi, he said, “We share a good bonding and things will be resolved through discussions”. While calling Angara a “gentleman politician”, Bommai said he will speak to him.

At least nine legislators including Ministers Angara (Sullia) and Anand Singh (Vijayanagara), have not been given a ticket. Singh is said to have opted out in favour of his son Siddharth Singh, who has been given a ticket.

Sweltering summer heat splits large rock in AP village

    [ad_1]

Gonegandla: Sweltering summer heat split open a large rock located at an elevation amidst houses in Gonegandla village of Kurnool district.

Kurnool district Collector Srijana Gummalla said the incident occurred on Tuesday in Adoni sub-division, leading to the evacuation of 150 families from the rock’s vicinity to avert any untoward incident.

“There is a crack in the rock but the crack is not expanding thankfully from Tuesday. There was that fear of it disintegrating and going down We have deployed the state disaster response force (SDRF) teams at the site,” said Gummalla.

    MS Education Academy

She said the district administration has also roped in the nearby cement companies and renewable energy company Greenko to help reinforce and stabilize the broken rock.

For the safety of the evacuees, Gummalla said they have been accommodated in a nearby school for now as the fragments of the rock may crash into their houses if the situation aggravates.

The school is located against the slope behind the rock’s location.
Considering that no quarrying occurred at the site of the incident, the collector observed that the scorching summer heat could be the reason for the split, even as no other suspicious activity was found to have occurred at the rock site.

However, a Met official said that Kurnool district did not record abnormally high temperatures on Tuesday while the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) recorded Gonegandla’s maximum temperature as 38.2 degrees Celsius on the same day.

Meanwhile, the sub-collector, tehsildhar and police teams are monitoring the situation in the village.

For Wednesday, the disaster management authority forecast severe heat wave in the four mandalams of Kunavaram (46 C, Alluri Sitarama Raju district), Golugonda (42.6 C, Anakapalli), Nathavaram (42 C, Anakapalli) and Kotananduru (41 C, Kakinada).
Likewise, heat wave in 126 more mandalams across the state, all of them estimated to log temperatures over 40 C.

Hyderabad zoo implements measures to combat summer heat

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Amid rise in maximum temperature in Hyderabad, the Nehru Zoological park is taking proactive measures to ensure the health and well-being of its animals. With temperatures steadily rising over the past few days, the zoo has installed coolers, sprinklers, and foggers throughout the park to combat the heat.

More than 200 sprinklers have been set up across the zoo, with small rain guns installed in each enclosure to ensure that every animal has access to relief from the heat. In addition, over one thousand foggers have been arranged in key areas such as the reptile house, New Macaws, all Pheasantry, and the Aviary area.

The zoo authorities are also ensuring that the lawns and gardens are watered continuously to keep the enclosures and surrounding areas cool and green. Over one kilogram of thunga grass has been placed on the roofs of the enclosures and night houses to further insulate the animals from the heat.

    MS Education Academy

To help the animals beat the heat, the zoo authorities are providing them with seasonal fruits like watermelon. This not only helps to keep the animals hydrated but also provides a much-needed source of vitamins and nutrients.

With these measures in place, the Nehru Zoological park is well-equipped to handle the summer heat and ensure the health and well-being of its animals.

  • After unseasonal rains, Hyderabad gears up for summer heat as mercury set to rise

After unseasonal rains, Hyderabad gears up for summer heat as mercury set to rise

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Hyderabad is gearing up for the summer heat after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad issued a yellow alert as the maximum temperature in the city is likely to rise up to 40 degrees Celsius this week.

In some districts of Telangana, the maximum temperature is expected to reach up to 45 degrees Celsius. These districts include Adilabad, Jagitial, Komaram Bheem, Mancherial, Nirmal, and Rajanna Siricilla.

    Recent rains in Hyderabad

Recently, Hyderabad received heavy rains, which brought much-needed relief to the residents who were witnessing scorching summer heat.

All six zones in Hyderabad, namely Charminar, Khairatabad, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Secunderabad, and Serilingampally, received rains towards the evening or night.

Now, the IMD issued a yellow alert till March 31 as the temperature in Hyderabad may reach up to 40 degrees Celsius. The Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) also forecasted that the maximum temperatures in the state are expected to be in the range of 36 to 40 degrees Celsius. In Hyderabad, maximum temperatures are expected to be in the range of 34 degrees Celsius to 37 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature is likely to be in the range of 22 degrees Celsius to 24 degrees Celsius.

Sehri tips to stay hydrated during summer season in Hyderabad

In view of the forecast made by both IMD Hyderabad and TSDPS, residents are advised to take necessary precautions and plan accordingly.

With the summer heat on the rise during the Ramzan, it is essential to drink enough water during sehri. As per various studies, a minimum of 60 ounces or nearly 2 liters of water can help a person keep hydrated for an entire day during the fast.

Eating yogurt at the end of sehri meal is scientifically correct and beneficial as it helps to soothe the stomach and prevent acidity, eventually preventing from getting dehydration.

In order to be hydrated, keep spice, salt, and sugar low in meals and add water-rich foods like cucumber, tomato salad, and juicy fruits like watermelon, oranges, kiwi, and more in sehri meal.

Apart from it, wearing loose, light-colored cotton clothing can also help in coping with the heat.
