U.S. adds a healthy 236,000 jobs despite Fed’s rate hikes

    [ad_1]

    screenshot 2023 04 07 085045

Despite last month’s brisk job growth, the latest economic signs increasingly suggest that an economic slowdown may be upon us. Manufacturing is weakening. America’s trade with the rest of the world is declining. And though restaurants, retailers and other services companies are still growing, they are doing so more slowly.

For Fed officials, taming inflation is Job One. They were slow to respond after consumer prices started surging in the spring of 2021, concluding that it was only a temporary consequence of supply bottlenecks caused by the economy’s surprisingly explosive rebound from the pandemic recession.

Only in March 2022 did the Fed begin raising its benchmark rate from near zero. In the past year, though, it has raised rates more aggressively than it had since the 1980s to attack the worst inflation bout since then.

And as borrowing costs have risen, inflation has steadily eased. The latest year-over-year consumer inflation rate — 6% — is well below the 9.1% rate it reached last June. But it’s still considerably above the Fed’s 2% target.

Complicating matters is turmoil in the financial system. Two big American banks failed in March, and higher rates and tighter credit conditions could further destabilize banks and depress borrowing and spending by consumers and businesses.

The Fed is aiming to achieve a so-called soft landing — slowing growth just enough to tame inflation without causing the world’s biggest economy to tumble into recession. Most economists doubt it will work; they expect a recession later this year.

So far, the economy has proved resilient in the face of ever-higher borrowing costs. America’s gross domestic product — the economy’s total output of goods and services — expanded at a healthy pace in second half of 2022. Yet recent data suggests that the economy is losing momentum.

On Monday, the Institute for Supply Management, an association of purchasing managers, reported that U.S. manufacturing activity contracted in March for a fifth straight month. Two days later, the ISM said that growth in services, which accounts for the vast majority of U.S. employment, had slowed sharply last month.

On Wednesday, the Commerce Department reported that U.S. exports and imports both fell in February in another sign that the global economy is weakening.

The Labor Department on Thursday said it had adjusted the way it calculates how many Americans are filing for unemployment benefits. The tweak added nearly 100,000 claims to its figures for the past two weeks and might explain why heavy layoffs in the tech industry this year had yet to show up on the unemployment rolls.

The Labor Department also reported this week that employers posted 9.9 million job openings in February, the fewest since May 2021 but still far higher than anything seen before 2021.

In its quest for a soft landing, the Fed has expressed hope that employers would ease wage pressures by advertising fewer vacancies rather than by cutting many existing jobs. The Fed also hopes that more Americans will start looking for work, thereby adding to the supply of labor and reducing pressure on employers to raise wages.

Good way to keep healthy is to practice yoga even at workplace: PM Modi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said hectic work schedules and sedentary lifestyles bring with them their own set of challenges, underlining that a good way to keep healthy is to practice yoga even at the workplace.

His remarks came in reaction to the Ministry of Ayush tweet about Union Minister of Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal launching a one-minute video on “Y-Break” for motivating mass participation in yoga, particularly for corporate workplaces and workaholics.

“Hectic work schedules and sedentary lifestyles bring with it their own set of challenges. A good way to keep healthy is to practice Yoga even at the workplace,” Modi said.

In another tweet, the prime minister said India is committed to self-reliance in energy and furthering sustainable growth.

His tweet was in response to Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s tweet in which he said India’s journey to be energy self-sufficient by 2047 has begun well.

“India is now the world’s 3rd largest energy consumer, 3rd largest consumer of Oil, 3rd Largest LPG Consumer, 4th largest LNG importer, 4th largest refiner & 4th largest automobile market in the world,” Puri tweeted.

  • Consumers Association: ‘Two thirds of veggie burgers are not very healthy, nutritional value can be easily improved’

Consumers Association: ‘Two thirds of veggie burgers are not very healthy, nutritional value can be easily improved’

    [ad_1]

Almost two thirds of the veggie burgers contain too much salt and/or saturated fat and are therefore not very healthy. This is shown by research by the Consumers’ Association, which looked at 75 vegetarian and vegan burgers that are sold at supermarkets. According to them, the burgers are generally still healthier than beef burgers.

The consumer organization looked at 75 burgers available at Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Lidl, Plus, Aldi, Hoogvliet, Dirk and Ekoplaza. These burgers are made from, for example, soy, nuts, pea protein or vegetables. Two thirds of the products appear to contain too much salt and/or saturated fat, is the conclusion.

The Consumers’ Association saw that both supermarkets and A-brands make unhealthy veggie burgers. This includes names such as Vivera, Valess, De Vegetarische Slager and Lidl. From Albert Heijn, 3 out of 10 veggie burgers can be called ‘healthy’ (as in: they do not contain too much salt or saturated fat), from Jumbo 4 out of 8 and from Garden Gourmet 2 out of 4.

Plus comes out best in the check: none of her 3 burgers contain too much salt or too much saturated fat. To illustrate: a healthier veggie burger contains, according to the association, a maximum of 1.13 grams of salt and 2.5 grams of saturated fat per 100 grams.

    Sufficient nutrients?

Of the 75 vegan burgers, only 27 are a healthier choice, says the Consumers’ Association. It was also assessed whether the 27 healthy vegetarian burgers contained sufficient protein, iron and vitamin B12. Then they are optimal for vegans, who do not get these nutrients from animal products. Only a handful of vegan burgers meet this requirement, the union says.

“Our panel research among more than 2000 consumers shows that vegetarians and flexitarians also find these additions important,” says Sandra Molenaar, director of the Consumers’ Association. “Manufacturers can also take significant steps in this area.”

    Quote

While many veggie burgers aren’t very healthy, they tend to be healthier than beef burgers

    Sandra Molenaar, Director Consumer Association

    Still healthier than meat burgers

Vega burgers contain on average a lot less salt and saturated fat than beef burgers, according to the Consumers’ Association. “They are generally healthier than beef burgers,” says Molenaar. “Moreover, vegetarian variants are a lot more sustainable. Not only in terms of animal welfare, but also because of the much smaller impact on the climate. With a little less salt, they are even healthier compared to meat, so it is up to manufacturers.”

The Consumers’ Association calls on manufacturers to be less generous with salt and to add more iron, protein and vitamin B12 to the burgers.

Not in the Wheel of Five

The Nutrition Center already reported that in 2022 not all meat substitutes fit into the Wheel of Five, because one part contains too much salt. They then compared six ready-made substitutes (so no burgers) from the supermarkets and saw major differences: one meat substitute had only 0.7 grams of salt per 100 grams, the other no less than 2.2 grams. The maximum amount of salt per day – for someone older than 9 years – is 6 grams.

Their check showed that Vivera’s ‘Vegetable mincemeat’ contains the least amount of salt, followed by Albert Heijn’s ‘Vegetarian minced chicken natural’ and Jumbo’s ‘Tasty veggie burger vegan’. The Unox Vegetarian Smoked Sausage performed worst in terms of salt. This is followed by the ‘Pieces of Italian style’ from Valess and the ‘Vegan hacktbal’ from the Vegetarian Butcher.

  • As Biden readies for 2024 run, his physician says he remains healthy, vigorous at 80

As Biden readies for 2024 run, his physician says he remains healthy, vigorous at 80

    [ad_1]

Washington: US President Joe Biden remains a healthy, vigorous, 80-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the presidency, his physician said Thursday.

“The President remains fit for duty, and fully executes all of his responsibilities without any exemptions or accommodations,” Dr Kevin C O’Connor, Physician to the President, said in a memorandum, days after his annual physical at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre.

Biden’s current medical considerations include a-fib with normal ventricular response, hyperlipidemia, gastroesophageal reflux, seasonal allergies, spinal arthritis and mild sensory peripheral neuropathy of the feet. For these, he takes three common prescription medications and two common over-the-counter medications, the physician said.

“President Biden remains a healthy, vigorous, 80-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency, to include those as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief,” said Dr O’Connor.

According to him, the most notable interval history for this past year was the President’s very extensively reported upper respiratory infection from SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). His initial infection ran from 21 July 2022 through 27 July 2022. He then experienced rebound COVID-19 positivity which started on 30 July 2022 and he tested negative on 6 August 2022.

“Fortunately, having been fully vaccinated and twice boosted at the time of initial infection, the President experienced only mild symptoms, consisting mostly of a deep, loose cough and hoarseness. He responded very well to standard, outpatient therapy, to include the anti-viral medication, Paxlovid,” Dr O’Conner said.

“His vital signs remained normal throughout his illness. Most importantly, his oxygenation remained excellent on room air. His pulse oximetry never fell below 97 per cent. The President experienced rebound positivity several days after testing negative, as has been well documented. Again, his course remained mild,” he said.

During his infection, the President was able to continue the business of the American people, working from the Executive Residence. He isolated in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations. He made it a very deliberate priority to protect any of the Executive Residence White House Secret Service and other staff whose duties required any (albeit socially distanced) proximity to him.

“The President has not experienced any residual symptoms which may be considered to be “Long COVID”. He has received his Bivalent COVID vaccine,” the doctor said.

    biden 50218

Since his last physical, Biden battled a case of Covid and a rebound infection but O’Connor said the president has not experienced any prolonged symptoms that would be considered long Covid.

Biden’s health has remained stable since his last medical exam was released in November 2021. In that report, the doctor noted the president had a “perceptibly stiffer and less fluid” gait and more frequent throat clearing, two addendums that could be explained by relatively minor issues.

Biden did have a small lesion removed from his chest on Thursday and sent for biopsy, the doctor’s summary said. First lady Jill Biden had cancerous tissue removed last month.

The president also underwent an “extremely detailed neurologic exam,” but resulted in no findings that would be consistent with a stroke, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease. An exam of Biden’s head, ears, eyes, nose and throat were also normal.

As was the case in 2021, Thursday’s summary noted Biden was being treated for several common age-related conditions such as a minor heart arrhythmia and an elevated cholesterol level. O’Connor said Thursday that the president’s cholesterol remains “remarkably low” on his current medication.

For the president’s “mild sensory peripheral neuropathy of the feet,” which was also noted in the 2021 report, the doctor on Thursday prescribed Biden custom orthotics.

The president weighed in at 178 pounds — down six pounds from his last physical — and stands 6 feet tall. He still works out five days a week, the doctor said, and does not drink alcohol or use tobacco products.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended Biden’s health earlier Thursday when pressed on the president’s age during the press briefing.

“If you watch him, you’ll see that he has a grueling schedule that he keeps up with — that sometimes some of us are not able to keep up with,” she said.

She noted that at last week’s State of the Union, “I believe he spent 90 minutes speaking to congressional members in front of him to the American people. After that, he spent an hour shaking hands and saying hello and greeting congressional members and their guests.

  • I miscarried, while my best friend had a healthy baby. Is it time to move on from the friendship?

I miscarried, while my best friend had a healthy baby. Is it time to move on from the friendship?

    [ad_1]

After many years of waiting for the “right time” and then trying to conceive, my best friend and I fell pregnant at almost exactly the same time. I miscarried at 11 weeks, while she went on to have a healthy baby.

I had to distance myself from my friend, as her growing bump was such a cruel reminder of my loss. I felt immensely guilty about it, because obviously she had done nothing wrong. At the time I thought she understood, but when I felt ready to reconnect after the baby was born, she made some comments that showed perhaps she didn’t get it at all. There was an accusation that I had abandoned her. It also felt like a very selfish comment, because in all that time she had never checked in with me to see if I was OK, and I also could have done with a friend.

I think too much has changed now for us to reconcile. She has her baby, and I’m moving away. And yet, the situation haunts me. I feel so sad that a 20-year friendship has been lost over life events that were no one’s fault. I fear that speaking to her could end up creating further upset and another bout of depression for me, as it did the last time. Is it time to just let it go and move on?

Eleanor says: First of all I’m so sorry for your loss. Any grief feels like it draws a curtain between you and the rest of the world, but this is especially true when a big part of the grief is for what could have been. It gets even harder to connect with people through mourning: harder to share memories of what you’re missing, harder to know the loss feels as concrete to them as it does to you. The isolation of the grief you’re experiencing makes it even more difficult to feel isolated from a friend as well.

It sounds like part of the problem is you don’t feel properly understood. An event that’s become such a big part of your life and emotional landscape doesn’t seem to take up the right amount of space in how she understands you; like the map you have of yourself and the map she has of you don’t match. That makes it really difficult to have a friendship. It’s hard to connect when you’re not even really seeing each other.

These kinds of mismatches happen in all kinds of relationships, over all kinds of loss – someone who loves us just does not clock how big something is to us, how much it still affects us, how near to the surface it always is.

The issue is, the reason we got into the mismatch is the same reason it’s unlikely to resolve on its own. The whole problem is that something just hasn’t occurred to someone in the right kind of way – it isn’t occupying their attention. So unless they get a new reason to see it, there’s not much reason to expect they suddenly will. Really there are only two options: speak to her, giving her that new reason to see what you’re feeling, or decide what to do if this never changes. It can be oddly emancipating to spend some time with the realisation that those are the only ways forward. To get to grips with the fact that she’s very unlikely to see it on her own.

I understand the fear that a conversation will just cause further upset, but on the other hand, it might be a huge relief to feel some of the connectedness and visibility you’ve been missing. You’ve described this to me in such a matter of fact, compassionate way. This is no one’s fault; she did nothing wrong; you felt guilty for needing to distance yourself; but now you feel so sad at the thought of losing her.

I have to imagine there’s a way to talk to her that comes from that place, instead of devolving into who abandoned who (you could just set aside the fact that she didn’t check in on you either). It could instead be sharing something, from a place of vulnerability, that you’d like your close friend to understand: of course you were thrilled for her journey with motherhood, but it was painful to be reminded of your own.

Often the people we love don’t realise how things are for us. If we’re lucky, though, that’s something they want to fix as much as we do.
