Why is there so much Poverty, Unemployment, Malnutrition, lack of Healthcare, etc in the World ?

    By Justice Katju
I have explained in some previous articles that before the Industrial Revolution, which began in England in the first half of the 18th century and then spread elsewhere, there were mostly feudal, agricultural societies everywhere in the world. The methods of production in feudal society were so primitive and backward ( the bullock was used for tilling the land in India, the buffalo in several south Asian countries e.g. Thailand, Vietnam, etc and the horse in Europe ) that very little wealth could be generated by them. So only a few people like kings, aristocrats, etc could be rich, while the rest of the population ( 90-95% ) had to be poor. When the cake is so small, very few people could eat it.
This situation radically changed after the Industrial Revolution. Now modern industry is so powerful and so big that enough wealth can be generated to give a decent life to everyone in the world, and now no one in the world need be poor, hungry, unemployed or lacking in healthcare or good education.

However, though almost three centuries have passed after the Industrial Revolution, why is it that the majority of the world ( particularly in the underdeveloped countries ) are still poor, and still suffering from the socio-economic problems mentioned above ? This needs an explanation.
The reason is that the countries which became industrialised after the Industrial Revolution ( North America, Europe, Japan, Australia, and now China ) have formed an exclusive club, and they do not want underdeveloped countries to join the club and become highly industrialised, since with their cheap labour the latter will undersell the goods of the former, causing their industries to close down ( as they will not be able to face the competition from the latter ), throwing millions out of employment. I have explained this in detail in these articles.

    https://writerscafeteria.com/guest-blogging/dr-faizis-fatuity/

    https://indicanews.com/2023/06/13/justice-markandey-katju-on-dr-pervez-hoodbhoys-superficial-understanding/

To prevent this, the developed countries, through their local agents, secretly spread hatred and make people of the underdeveloped countries fight each other on the basis of religion, race, caste, etc ( as has been happening in India and elsewhere ).

    https://indicanews.com/2023/02/22/the-puppeteer-and-the-puppets/

But without getting highly industrialised the underdeveloped countries like India can never abolish poverty and the other socio-economic problems which plague them, and this they can do only by launching powerful united people’s struggles led by modern minded patriotic leaders to create a political and social order, under which there is rapid industrialisation and modernisation, and everyone gets a decent life.

    https://thenewscaravan.com/lies-damned-lies-and-statistics/

Since after the Industrial Revolution a unique situation has arisen in world history that no one in the world need be poor, hungry or without decent lives, the 21st century will be characterised as the century in which the protracted and arduous struggles of poor people in the world for decent lives will be fought out to a conclusion ( after tremendous sacrifices ), and result in creating societies everywhere free from the evils of poverty, hunger, unemployment, etc and people everywhere enjoying a high standard of living.
When this happens, the progress of science and technology, which helps people get better lives, will become many times faster than it is now.

Discrepancies and Doubts Surrounding India's Poverty Statistics: A Deeper Look

An article titled ‘Over 135 Million Indians Break Free from Multidimensional Poverty in Five Years, States NITI Aayog Report ‘ has been published in the portal thenewscaravan.com

    https://thenewscaravan.com/over-135-million-indians-break-free-from-multidimensional-poverty-in-five-years-states-niti-aayog-report/

There are two problems accepting this assertion (1) The source is Niti Aaayog, a Govt of India body, which would naturally like to paint a rosy picture of the country (2) Statistics in India are highly questionable, as it is very difficult to verify them.
There is an aphorism of Mark Twain ” iies, damned lies, and statistics ”.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/kalevleetaru/2017/02/02/lies-damned-lies-and-statistics-how-bad-statistics-are-feeding-fake-news/

This aphorism squarely applies to India, as it is a pretty disorganised country. Moreover it is so vast,, with 1400 million people, that it is difficult to get accurate figures, often even by a neutral unbiased body, what to say of a Government of India agency. How many people are poor, how many unemployed, how many lack proper healthcare and good education, etc are impossible to verify accurately, or even to conjecture.

And what is the definition of poverty ? Since prices of essential commodities have steeply escalated in India in recent years, and incomes have not correspondingly increased ( assuming they have increased at all ), it is obvious that poverty has increased ( since incomes are relative to the price index ).

Global Hunger Index, which is a reputed international agency reporting on world hunger, reported that half of Indian children are malnourished, wasted and/or stunted. India (which has a population of 1400 million ) has slipped from position number 101 to 107 in just one year ( 2021-2022 ) among the 121 countries surveyed by that international agency

    https://byjus.com/free-ias-prep/global-hunger-index/#:~:text=India%20ranks%20107th%20out%20of,countries%20covered%20in%20the%20GHI.

    https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/education/news/46-of-girls-under-15-anaemic-in-india-report/articleshow/89098690.cms

Tens of millions of our young men and women are without jobs? If 100 class 4 ( peon or unskilled manual labour ) govt jobs are advertised, there are often several hundred thousand applicants, many of them having M.Sc M.A., or M.B.A. degrees ( some even Ph.D. ), engineers, etc.

    https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/over-93000-candidates-including-3700-phd-holders-apply-for-peon-job-in-up/articleshow/65604396.cms

Proper healthcare and good education is almost non-existent for the masses. Private hospitals and clinics are too expensive for the masses, and the condition of the govt ones is terrible (to say the least ). Even the All India Instititute of Medical Sciences ), New Delhi ( AIIMS ), a premier Indian medical institute, looks like a railway station, with thousands of sick people waiting outside endlessly, and usually with perfunctory care, if any. The condition of most schools in India is terrible.

It is sometimes claimed that GDP in India is growing, but no one asks who is getting the fruits of that growth, the Indian masses, or just a handful of big businessmen and international corporates ? The gap between rich and poor has widened in India, with a handful of big businessmen becoming richer ( often by illegal means ) while the poor get poorer ( because of escalating prices of food, etc ).

Oxfam India’s report directly contradicts the report of Niti Aayog

    https://www.guwahatiplus.com/oxfam-india-highlights-widening-gap-between-indias-rich-and-poor#:~:text=GUWAHATI%3A%20A%20report%20by%20Oxfam,3%25%20of%20the%20country’s%20wealth.

Other sources also contradict Niti Aayog’s claim.

India’s vision for healthcare is universal, says PM Modi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that India’s vision for health was universal even when there were no global pandemics.

While inaugurating virtually the 6th edition of Advantage Healthcare India (AHCI) 2023 (One Earth One Health) in the national capital, Modi said that India’s goal is physical, mental and social well-being for all.

“True progress is people-centric. No matter how many advances are made in medical science, access must be assured to the last person at the last mile,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

The Prime Minister underlined the significance of Yoga and meditation, saying these are ancient India’s gifts to the modern world that have now become global movements.

“India’s traditional healthcare systems hold a lot of answers to stress and lifestyle diseases,” the Prime Minister said, adding that India’s goal is to make healthcare accessible and affordable, not only for its own citizens but for the whole world.

He further elaborated that the world has witnessed the impact of Indian doctors, nurses and caregivers and they are widely respected for their competence and commitment and talent.

Modi stated that many healthcare systems across the world have benefited from the talent of Indian professionals.

The Prime Minister further said that India is proud to have been a partner to many nations in the noble mission of saving lives through vaccines and medicines giving examples of Made-In-India vaccines, the world’s largest and fastest Covid-19 vaccination drive, and shipping 300 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines to over 100 countries.

Modi reiterated that it showed a glimpse of India’s capability and commitment and the nation will continue to be a trusted friend to every nation that seeks good health for its citizens.

The Health Ministry in association with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) has co-branded the 6th edition of Advantage Healthcare India (AHCI) 2023 (One Earth One Health) with India’s G20 Presidency and the event is being held on April 26 and 27 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

Vital supplies dwindle, healthcare system threatened in Sudan amid unrest: UN

    [ad_1]

Khartoum: Amid the ongoing unrest in Sudan, people are running out of food, fuel and other vital supplies, and the healthcare system is in danger of collapse, UN humanitarians said.

“We desperately need a humanitarian pause so that wounded and sick civilians can reach hospitals,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

“People in the capital Khartoum have been unable to safely leave their homes to buy food and other essentials for days now.”

    MS Education Academy

OCHA reported on a severely hampered relief-response system and called for a halt to attacks against aid workers and looting of humanitarian facilities, reports Xinhua news agency.

It said that humanitarian actors must be able to carry out their work safely, and aid agencies must be able to move staff and replenish critical supplies safely.

“We are worried that Sudan’s health care system could completely collapse,” the UN humanitarians said. “Hospitals need additional staff, supplies, and blood.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) listed 16 hospitals across Sudan, including capital Khartoum, were forced to shut down due to attacks.

A further 16 hospitals, including in Darfur states, could close soon due to staff fatigue and lack of supplies, said the WHO.

The fighting that erupted on the morning of April 15 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in Kharotum has so far killed about 270 people and injured more than 2,600 others, with gunfire and explosions still heard across the capital city.

The violence, which is a result of a bloody tussle for power between Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF head Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, has also spread to other areas in the country, including in Darfur to the west.

As a result of the unrest, thousands of civilians have fled Khartoum and foreign nations are trying to evacuate their citizens, amid a sixth day of fierce fighting.

“We condemn all attacks on health personnel, facilities and ambulances — which are putting more lives at risk,” said OCHA.

“They are flagrant violations of international law, and they must stop now.”

  • ChatGPT has the power to change healthcare: Report

ChatGPT has the power to change healthcare: Report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which can write original prose and chat with human fluency, holds the potential to completely change healthcare, according to a report on Thursday.

The report by GlobalData, a data and analytics company, said that the revolutionary technology is coming faster than most people in the industry currently recognise.

It estimates the total Artificial Intelligence (AI) market will be worth $383.3 billion in 2030, with a robust 21 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2022 to 2030.

“ChatGPT can be used to assist doctors with bureaucratic tasks such as writing patient letters so doctors can spend more time on patient interaction. More importantly, chatbots have the potential to increase the effectiveness and accuracy of the processes for preventive care, symptom identification, and post-recovery care,” said Tina Deng, Principal Medical Devices Analyst at GlobalData, in a statement.

AI integration into chatbots and virtual assistants can motivate and interact with patients. It can review a patient’s symptoms and then recommend diagnostic advice and different options like virtual check-ins or face-to-face visits with a healthcare professional.

This can reduce the workload for hospital staff, increase the efficiency of patient flow, and save healthcare costs.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, chatbots have been developed for contactless screening of Covid-19 symptoms in healthcare institutions and to help answer questions from the public.

Chatbots can answer patient queries about medical products and share brand news with customers.

Pharmaceutical and medical device companies can benefit from using AI-enabled virtual agents to automate customer service processes and give patients round-the-clock attention.

Additionally, chatbots can be used for social purposes, increasing patient engagement. Chatbots offer advice on how to maintain health after treatment. They send automated reminders to take medications and re-visit information.

Meanwhile, a recent study in the Journal of The National Cancer Institute Cancer Spectrum, showed that when it comes to answering people’s questions about cancer, especially regarding myths and misconceptions, ChatGPT was found 97 per cent accurate in providing the correct information.

The AI was so accurate that the test subjects were unaware whether the answers came from ChatGPT or the National Cancer Institute.

However, the usage of chatbots in patient care and medical research raises several ethical concerns.

As massive patient data is fed into machine learning to improve the accuracy of chatbots, patient information is vulnerable. The information provided by chatbots might be more inaccurate and misleading, depending on the sources fed into the chatbots.

“Regardless of the risks, AI-powered chatbots will be used widely in the healthcare industry. More regulations are expected to govern the health uses of chatbots,”Deng said.
