  • Tejashwi leaves ED headquarters after 8 hrs questioning in ‘land for jobs’ case

Tejashwi leaves ED headquarters after 8 hrs questioning in ‘land for jobs’ case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday left the Enforcement Directorate headquarters here after being questioned for eight hours in connection with the alleged land for job case involving his father and former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and other family members.

He reached the ED headquarters at 11 a.m. and left at around 9.10 p.m.

The CBI had questioned Tejashwi Yadav in the matter on March 25, and on the same day, his sister and Rajya Sabha member Misa Bharti was questioned.

    MS Education Academy

In March, the ED claimed unaccounted cash of Rs 1 crore, $1,900, 540 gms gold and 1.5 kg of gold jewellery and other incriminating documents were recovered during the raids conducted at 24 locations in Delhi, Mumbai, Patna and in Ranchi based on specific intelligence inputs.

The ED had said that they detected around Rs 600 crore in “proceeds of crime” which were in the form of immovable properties of Rs 350 crore and transactions of Rs 250 Crore routed through various benamidaars.

It alleged that the PMLA investigation conducted so far has revealed that several pieces of land at prominent locations in Patna and other areas were illegally acquired by the family of Lalu Prasad in lieu of jobs provided in Railways. The current market value of these land parcels is more than Rs 200 crore and several benamidars, shell entities and beneficial owners for these lands have been identified.

“A property situated at D-1088, New Friends Colony, Delhi (independent 4 storied bungalow, registered in the name of A.B. Exports Private Ltd, a company owned and controlled by Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and family) was shown to have been acquired at a value of mere Rs 4 lakh, the present market value of which is approximately Rs 150 crore,” the ED claimed.

An official claimed that huge amount of cash/Proceeds of Crime were infused in purchasing this property and few Mumbai-based entities, dealing in the gems and jewellery sector, were used to channel ill-gotten proceeds of crime in this regard.

“The property has been though, on paper, declared as office of A.B. Exports Private Ltd and AK Infosystems Pvt Ltd, is being exclusively used as residential premises by Tejashwi Prasad. During the searches, Tejashwi Prasad was found to be staying at this house and was found to be using this house as his residential property,” the ED alleged.

The ED said that their investigation has found that 4 parcels of lands acquired by the family of Lalu Yadav for just Rs 7.5 lakh from poor Group-D applicants were sold to former RJD MLA Syed Abu Dojana by Rabri Devi with huge gains at Rs 3.5 crore.

It said that their investigation has further revealed that a major portion of the amount thus received, was transferred to the account of Tejashwi Prasad.

  • Amazon halts construction of 2nd headquarters in US to cut costs

Amazon halts construction of 2nd headquarters in US to cut costs

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: As it cuts costs across the verticals amid the ongoing economic meltdown, Amazon has now halted construction of its second headquarters in the US.

Called ‘HQ2’, the second headquarters of the ecommerce company is being built in the state of Virginia (its first HQ is in Seattle, Washington State).

John Schoettler, Amazon’s real estate head, said in a statement the company is pushing out the groundbreaking of PenPlace, the second phase of the sprawling northern Virginia campus, reports CNBC.

“We’re always evaluating space plans to make sure they fit our business needs and to create a great experience for employees, and since Met Park will have space to accommodate more than 14,000 employees, we’ve decided to shift the groundbreaking of PenPlace (the second phase of HQ2) out a bit,” Schoettler said.

The first phase of the campus is expected to open on time in June this year, that will house 8,000 employees.

In 2019, the ecommerce giant had announced to halt plans to build its new headquarters in New York after it faced pushback from local activists and city council leaders.

Amazon recently laid off 18,000 employees among its corporate workforce, after cutting a number of employees in November last year.

“In the short term, we face an uncertain economy, but we remain quite optimistic about the long-term opportunities for Amazon,” according to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy.

“We’re working really hard to streamline our costs and trying to do so at the same time so that we don’t give up on the long-term strategic investments that we believe can meaningfully change broad customer experiences and change Amazon over the long-term,” Jassy said on the analysts’ call last month.

  • 3 killed, 10 wounded as terrorists storm Karachi police headquarters

3 killed, 10 wounded as terrorists storm Karachi police headquarters

    [ad_1]

Karachi: At least three attackers were killed and 10 people wounded on Friday night when a group of terrorists opened fire at the headquarters of Karachi police in south Sindh province, officials said.

The attack happened at around 7:10 p.m. local time when eight to 10 terrorists opened fire and hurled hand grenades at the Karachi police chief’s office near the Saddar area of Karachi, Deputy Inspector General of south zone Karachi Irfan Baloch told media.

He said four floors of the building had been cleared in the operation jointly launched by the Pakistan Army, paramilitary rangers and police, adding that during the clearance operation, a suicide bomber blew himself up on the fourth floor, partially damaging the building, Xinhua news agency reported.

The powerful explosion also shattered the window glasses of nearby buildings, said the police.

A heavy contingent of police and rescue teams reached the scene and cordoned off the area. Police also sealed off traffic on the main artery Shahrah-e-Faisal, where the building is located.

Eyewitnesses told the news agency that the lights of the building under attack had been turned off, while gunshots and multiple explosions could be heard.

Several police personnel were inside the office when the attack took place, said the police, adding that the attackers equipped with heavy weapons managed to enter the third and fourth floor of the building.

The banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement issued Friday evening, it said the Karachi police office was the target of the attack.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif strongly condemned the terrorist attack, appreciating the police and security forces for their effective action against the terrorists.

“Terrorists once again targeted Karachi but this kind of cowardly act could not weaken the resolve of police and law enforcement agencies. The whole nation stood with police and security institutions … collective efforts needed to root out the menace of terrorism,” the Prime Minister said.

Two militants killed in gunfire amid attack on Karachi police headquarters

    [ad_1]

Karachi: At least two terrorists were killed during an ongoing exchange of fire in and outside the office of the Karachi police chief as militants stormed the building located on Sharea Faisal, media reports said citing Sindh Inspector-General Ghulam Nabi Memon.

The Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) office located on Karachi’s main artery, Shahrae Faisal, came under a gun and bomb attack on Friday evening, officials confirmed, Samaa TV reported.

At least one police officer has been martyred in the attack while an Edhi volunteer has been injured, Samaa TV reported.

Police surgeon Summaiya Syed said that one injured worker from the Edhi Foundation has been brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment, Dawn reported.

Sound of heavy and frequent exchange of fire and explosions emanating from the police complex, located near the Financial Trade Center (FTC) on main Shahrae Faisal, spread fear and panic in the area, the report said.

“The Karachi police office has come under attack,” Additional Inspector General, Javed Alam Odho, confirmed.

Sources said that there could be eight to 10 attackers, who came in a white vehicle while some officials said the terrorists gained access to the complex from the rear where the motor vehicle pool and workshop is maintained, Samaa TV reported.

Shortly after the sound of gunfire was reported, heavy contingent of police from nearby police stations was dispatched to the spot.

The lights inside the police headquarters were also turned off to prevent the terrorists from knowing where to go. Shahrae Faisal near the police station has been blocked for traffic as well, Samaa TV reported.

Around 60-70 staff work in the building, but by evening this number falls as people leave for the day.

Those inside said that they have locked themselves in their rooms to stay safe from the terrorists, Samaa TV reported

Confirming the incident, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said that Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah is personally monitoring the situation.

Terming any suspected assailants involved as terrorists, he said that heavy contingent of police and paramilitary rangers have been dispatched to the spot, Samaa TV reported.

The locality from where the firing was reported is a densely populated area and the Saddar police station and Police Lines are also located nearby.

It is located just off Shahrae Faisal, which is the main artery of the city connecting the downtown, business district with the rest of the city and is full of commuters heading home for the day resulting in a rush hour, Samaa TV reported.

The firing reportedly took place at a time when security is already on high-alert in the city following the arrival of international cricket players for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the recently concluded international naval military exercise, Aman 2023.

Earlier in the day, the Quetta Gladiators and Lahore Qalandars practiced at the National Bank Arena in Karachi.

“I want the perpetrators behind the attack on the additional IG’s office to be arrested,” Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said, adding that an attack on the KPO is “not acceptable” at any cost, Dawn reported.

The Chief Minister also sought a report from the officer concerned and said that he is personally monitoring the situation.
