  • Kashmir Hajj Pilgrims To Pay 50,000 More, Tarigami Says

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Kashmiris are once again facing exorbitant airfare prices ahead of the busy travel season, with some paying two to three times the usual fees to fly from Srinagar to Delhi. Typically, this flight would cost between Rs 3000 and Rs 5000, but the current prices range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000.

Even Haj pilgrims are not immune to these high prices, with those departing from the Srinagar Embarkation Point (EP) having to pay Rs 50,000 more than those leaving from the Delhi EP. The price hike has prompted criticism from some quarters, who accuse the airlines of profiting unfairly at the expense of the public.

Senior CPI (M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami took to Twitter to denounce the increase in airfare prices. “Airlines are arbitrarily raising fares, leaving travellers in distress,” he tweeted. “Even Haj pilgrims are being forced to pay more. The tentative Haj amount payable by pilgrims at the Srinagar Embarkation Point (EP) is Rs 50,000 higher than that for pilgrims embarking from Delhi EP.”

During the 2023 Hajj conference, Smriti Zubin Irani, the Minister for Minority Affairs, announced that Indian citizens travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj would pay at least Rs 1 lakh less than the previous cost.

Hyderabad: The Haj Committee of India has recently announced that they will no longer be providing 2100 riyals to the hajj pilgrims for the 2023 Hajj season. Instead, the pilgrims will have to arrange the riyals on their own for their travel expenses while in Saudi Arabia. The Chief Executive Officer of the Haj Committee of India, Mohammad Yaqoob Shaikh, has written to all state Haj committees, advising them to inform the pilgrims about the purchase of riyals on their own.

According to Shaikh, each pilgrim will be allowed to carry a maximum of 1500 Saudi riyals. If any pilgrim carries more than the allowed amount, they will be subject to the rules and regulations of the Reserve Bank of India and customs officials. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Minority Affairs has selected the State Bank of India to provide Riyal to the pilgrims. The supply and insurance of Saudi Riyal will also be done by SBI.

SBI will make arrangements for the supply of riyals to the pilgrims, which will be available at Hajj training camps and application points. The bank will also appoint a nodal officer for each state to oversee the arrangements for the supply of riyals. The state Hajj committees will guide the pilgrims regarding the purchase of riyals.

In addition to the new policies regarding riyals, sub-committees comprising members of the Hajj Committee have been formed for effective arrangements during the Hajj camp. These committees will be responsible for food, transport, maintenance, and volunteers. Two members of the Hajj Committee have been included in each committee to ensure that the pilgrims are provided with the best possible facilities and services.

The Haj Committee of India has been working to ensure that all aspects of the Hajj pilgrimage are properly taken care of, and these new policies are just one step towards that goal.

The government has decided to lay emphasis on ‘Cashless Hajj’ this year. In pursuant to this policy, the Haj pilgrims will be provided with a card by the State Bank of India (SBI) for the use of foreign currency. Highly placed sources in the Ministry of Minority Affairs gave this information on Monday.

Under the earlier system, Haj pilgrims had to deposit 2,100 Saudi Riyals (about Rs 45 thousand) with the Haj Committee of India, which used to be made available to them for spending in Mecca and Medina of Saudi Arabia.

The ministry has partnered with the SBI to make special arrangements to provide foreign exchange to the pilgrims.

Unlike previous years, when each pilgrim was given 2,100 Saudi riyals by the Haj Committee of India in lieu of Indian currency, irrespective of his actual requirements, the Haj Policy 2023 gives the option to the pilgrims to arrange their own foreign currency or take a lesser amount of foreign exchange, according to their requirements.

The government has collaborated with the SBI to ensure the supply of foreign exchange to the pilgrims at the most competitive rates, the statement said.

In case the card is lost during the pilgrimage, the pilgrim can get his money refunded from the bank.

  • Hajj 2023: 4314 Women From India, 132 From Kashmir Likely To Perform Hajj Without Mahram

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: After the Saudi government announced that a mahram is no longer needed to accompany a woman pilgrim, a first-of-its kind decision, more than 4300 women have applied for Hajj without mahram this year.

According to Ministry of Minority Affairs as quoted by ANI, applications from approximately 4314 women have been received. The Ministry also stated that this is the highest number of applications received till date from women aged 45 and above.

For Jammu and Kashmir, the officials earlier stated that around 132 women from Kashmir will be participating in Hajj without a Mahram this year.

Earlier the Ministry of Minority Affairs  stated that both single women and women in groups would be able to apply for Hajj. They also stated that the Indian consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia will oversee and ensure the housing and lodging arrangements for women who are going alone.

In October last year, the Saudi Arabian government announced that women could perform Hajj without a Mahram, ending the decades long ruling. Earlier women were required to be accompanied by a Mahram for Hajj.

The move is a part of the ‘social change’ implemented by the current Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman to change the country’s closed-off image.

Saudi Arabia under the leadership of the prince has made several ‘social reforms’ like the lifting of the ban on cinemas and allowing women to drive. Saudi women can now also live on their own without seeking any permissions from any male guardian, after an amendment was made in the previous ruling by the Saudi kingdom.

Labelled as “The Reformist” by some people and reports, Mohammad Bin Salman was crowned as Saudi’s new Prince in the year 2017 after the then Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Nayef was dismissed and has been since making several changes in the country.

For the unversed, Mahram is an Arabic word used for an official or legal guardian of a woman, who is related by blood who she cannot get married to, after marriage even the husband of a woman becomes a Mahram for her. Islamic scholars in past had collectively made it imperative for a Muslim woman to perform Hajj accompanied by a Mahram, the reason being safety and security.

The application process for the Hajj pilgrimage for this year began in February and ended on March 10. According to media reports, around 175,025 pilgrims from India will be travelling to Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage this year

Hajj is the holy pilgrimage and is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam. It has been deemed mandatory for every physically, mentally and financially sound adult muslim, and has to be performed once in a lifetime.

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Nearly 10,000 people from Jammu and Kashmir will perform the sacred pilgrimage of Hajj this year as the draw of lots were held Friday, officials said on Friday.

They said that 1320 people, above 70-years of age and 132 women who had applied without mahram, will also perform the Hajj 2023.

“For the first time, women without Mahram have been allowed to go for the pilgrimage. 132 female applicants without mahram have been selected this year. 1320 people who are above 70 years of age have also been selected under Reserved Category,” Mir said.

He said that 14,000 applications were received for Haj 2023 from the people of JK. Earlier, Saudi government had barred the intending pilgrims above 70 years age in view of the Covid pandemic in year 2020 and 2021. However, the Saudi government recently announced that pilgrims above 70 years of age will be given priority and for the first time the Saudi government also allowed female pilgrims without mahram to perform the holy pilgrimage of Hajj.

“The draw of lots through random digital selection was held on Friday after 3:00 pm,” he said.

“The list of successful Intending Haj Pilgrims shall be published next day (Saturday) besides uploading the same on the official website of J&K Hajj Committee www.jkshc.org,” said an official communique from the Haj house J&K.

This year, there will be 25 embankment points for the pilgrims across J&K. The J&K House has been helpful to many pilgrims in getting their passport verification one at the earliest. Haj house officials will facilitate the pilgrims from J&K by all means. Pertinently, in February this year, the Saudi government announced to bar children below 12 years of for performing the Haj 2023. Haj Committee of India (HCoI) in its official communique had stated that Saudi Government has decided to disallow the children below 12 years of age in a bid to ensure their safety. This year, HCoI after holding deliberations with the Saudi government, had made Haj application forms available online free of cost. The HCoI had also announced that this year Haj will be cheaper by Rs 80,000 and each pilgrim will have to pay Rs 3.70 to Rs 3.80 lakh for performing the Haj pilgrimage. (KNO)
