    SRINAGAR: Parts of Kashmir Valley received rains and snowfall while metereological department on Tuesday forecast mainly dry weather in Jammu and Kashmir for now.

    Quoting a meteorological department official news agency GNS reported that upper reaches including Gulmarg received fresh snowfall with the world famous skiing resort recording 10 cms (4 inches) of it since overnight till 0830 hours today.

    He said that while Srinagar had traces of rain during the time, Qazigund recorded 4.3mm, Pahalgam 4.3mm, Kupwara 7.6mm, Kokernag 4.2mm, Banihal 0.6mm, Batote 0.2mm and Bhadarwah 1.4mm.

    Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 5.0°C against the previous night’s 5.3°C . Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 4.1°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 4.7°C against 3.7°C on the previous night and it was 4.8°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 0.8°C against minus 1.7°C on the previous night and it was 4.8°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 3.7°C, the same as on the previous night and it was 4.4°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minusv3.5°C against 0.2°C on the previous night and it was 3.2°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 3.1°C against 4.5°C on the previous night and it was 3.4°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 13.7°C against 15.5°C on the previous night. It was 3.1°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 6.2°C (above normal by 5.0°C), Batote 7.6°C (above normal by 4.1°C), Katra 11.7°C (3.2°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 4.7°C (4.1°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh recorded a low of minus 5.6°C, the official said.

    The MeT has forecast mainly clear weathet at most places in next 24 hours.
    From February 22-25, the official said that mainly clear to partly cloudy weather was expected at most places.

    From, February 26-27, he said generally cloudy weather with possibility of light rain/snowfall over higher reaches at scattered places.
    While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 and a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ ghat followed it have ended, Kashmir is under grip of 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which ends on March 1.

    Srinagar: A video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra enjoying a ride on a snow scooter in Gulmarg ski resort of Jammu and Kashmir is breaking the internet.

    In the footage, the Gandhi siblings can be seen taking turns in the driver’s seat of the snow scooter with several other scooters, carrying security personnel of the Congress leaders, in tow.

    The 101-second video has been widely shared on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

    While most viewers have commented favourably to the Gandhi siblings’ joy ride, some ridiculed them for not being ‘serious’.

    “Would any voter take a Leader seriously, if these types of videos are put out?” a Twitter user (@Vijay_NT2) commented on the video posted by a Youth Congress leader from Rajasthan.

    Rahul arrived here last week on a private visit and has been camping in Gulmarg. He was joined by his sister over the weekend.

    The brother-sister duo were in Kashmir during the last two days of the party’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in January.

    Srinagar, Feb 14: All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader and party’s former president, Rahul Gandhi would likely arrive in Gulmarg tomorrow (Wednesday) on a personal visit.

    His arrival will come just two weeks after he concluded his Bharat Jodo Yatra in Srinagar on January 30 in which the leaders from different political parties participated at SK Stadium here.

    Rahul walked over 4000 kilometres to conclude his Bharat Jodo Yatra last month in Srinagar with his concluding speech, wherein he mentioned that Kashmir is another home for him.

    Sources privy to the development told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that Gandhi will arrive at Gulmarg tomorrow where he is going to spend some days.

    A senior leader from Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) said that Rahul Gandhi usually visits foreign countries on the eve of New Year but due to his busy schedule this year in view of Bharat Jodo Yatra, he couldn’t visit anywhere.

    He said that although there is no official confirmation but it is being said that the AICC leader has now decided to visit Gulmarg for some days tomorrow—(KNO)

    Gulmarg, Feb 14: Five days National Event of 3rd edition of Khelo India concluded today at Gulmarg with a grand function attended by over two thousand participants including players, tourists and officials of different departments.

    Union Minister of State for Home Affairs and Youth Affairs & Sports, Nisith Pramanik, was the chief guest on the occasion of the concluding ceremony.

    Joint Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Prem Kumar Jha; Secretary Youth Services & Sports and Tourism, Sarmad Hafeez; Secretary J&K Sports Council Nuzhat Gul; CEO, Gulmarg Development Authority besides Major General RK Sing and President Winter Games Rouf Trumboo, Officers of line departments, players and tourists were present on the occasion 

    Speaking on the occasion, the Nisith Pramanik remarked that the 3rd Khelo India Winter Games held at Gulmarg was a major event compared to the previous events. He said that the next event would be even bigger event which would be compared with other international events.

    He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Anurag Thakur and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for the developing sports infrastructure in J&K which helps youth to excel in different sports.

    Union Minister said that players such as Sarfaraz Ahmad and Arif Khan who played in the winter Olympics made our nation proud.

    “In the last two years the government developed Indoor Stadium in every district of Jammu and Kashmir besides play grounds in every panchayat’, he said and underlined that J&K has transitioned into a new era of prosperity.

    While distributing medals among the winners of Junior Girls Snow Shoe sport and Sprint boys, Nisith Pramanik expressed pleasure over the exemplary performance of J&K players who bagged gold in these competitions.

    He thanked officials of various departments associated with Khelo India winter games including J&K Sports Council, Tourism department, Gulmarg Development Authority, Gulmarg Cable Car Corporation, hoteliers and Winter Games Association for smooth and successful organisation of the entire event.

    Sarmad Hafeez while speaking on the occasion thanked GoI for awarding the 3rd Khelo India winter games and termed the five days programme as a snow festival in wonder land of Gulmarg and said that Gulmarg is a capital of winter sports of the country.

    While presenting vote of thanks, Nuzhat Gul expressed gratitude to Union Minister Anurag Thakur and Lieutenant Governor for their support in organising the huge event and also thanked Chief Guest of the function besides officers of line departments for their cooperation in organising the national event and concluding it successfully.

    J&K topped the medal tally, bagging 26 Gold medals, 25 silver medals, 25 Bronze medals followed by Maharashtra with 13 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals. The third position was achieved by Himachal Pradesh 10 Gold, 14 Silver and 7 Bronze while Army scored 10 gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals.

    Gulmarg, Feb 10 (GNS): The 3rd edition of Khelo India National Winter Games began at Gulmarg with the message by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the participating players.

    The mega sports event was declared open in the presence of Lieutenant Governor of J&K,  Manoj Sinha and Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and I&B,  Anurag Thakur.

    During the biggest winter sports tournament, more than 1500 Athletes from all over the country will compete in 11 different winter-sports disciplines.

    Union Sports Minister, Anurag Thakur lauded the J&K Government for developing sports facilities at grassroot level and achieving unprecedented progress in the sports sector in a short span of time.

    What Jammu and Kashmir has done in the world of sports in just three years is a matter of great pride. Indoor stadiums have been built in every district and every village has a playground. Where once there used to be incidents of stone pelting, today football, wushu and various sports are played there. This is the picture of new Jammu Kashmir, he added.

    The Union Minister assured full support and cooperation in developing Center of Excellence for Winter Games in the UT.

    It is the “vision” of PM Nareandra Modi ji to create sporting infrastructure across India. The setting up of a National Centre of Excellence in the valley will support the athletes of J&K, he said.

    In his address, Lt Governor  Manoj Sinha said, PM Narendra Modi Ji’s message and blessings to the players participating in 3rd Khelo India National Winter Games will encourage & inspire them.

    Khelo India Winter Games will celebrate & honour sporting excellence and witness the contests of skill and endurance of athletes. It is a great occasion to strive for the greatest victory, to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship, peace, equality, friendship & respect for the competitors. The spirit of oneness, Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat will make us stronger, the Lt Governor said.

     “The entire country at the moment is united by the 3rd Winter Games dream. Each player participating will become the best ambassador of J&K. With the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, this sporting spectacle will strengthen the bond of goodwill & unite all the players as one family,” the Lt Governor said.

    behalf of the people of J&K, the Lt Governor welcomed the players, officials and sports enthusiasts and invited all the guests, who have come from every corner of the country to enjoy J&K’s hospitality, to enjoy the games and to enjoy the incredible sights and sounds of Jammu Kashmir.

    The Lt Governor also highlighted the transformation in J&K’s sporting culture under the leadership of Prime Minister.

    In the past few years, J&K has given many sporting heroes to the country. Continuous efforts of the UT Government in developing world-class sports infrastructure and facilities in every nook & corner of UT, vibrant sports culture & sports budget at par with bigger states have added a new dimension to J&K’s Sports sector, said the Lt Governor.

    Welfare of sportspersons is our priority. Special efforts are being made to ensure dignified life for our sportspersons and to encourage youth to choose sports as a career. The participation of more than 50 lakh youth in various sporting events last year is a testimony to this commitment, he added.

    With the help of Union Sports Ministry we will work for establishing Center of Excellence for Winter Games. The location has already been identified. All efforts are being made to provide opportunities to sportspersons to excel in their career, the Lt Governor noted.

    On the occasion, Lt Governor and Union Sports Minister e-launched 40 Khelo India Centres across Jammu Kashmir. The Centres have been dedicated to all the budding sportspersons of J&K UT.

    Sh Sarmad Hafeez, Secretary, Youth Affairs & Sports J&K and Ms Nuzhat Gul, Secretary, J&K Sports Council shared the achievements of the J&K UT in national & international sports arena.

    While congratulating the organizers for making efforts in conducting the mega event, the LG said that it is a proud movement for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. “I convey my greetings to each member including the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, High Altitude Warfare School Jawahar Institute of mountaineering, J&K Sports council and those associated with the event,” he said.

    He said Gulmarg will celebrate the sporting excellence on snow covered slopes and will witness the contests of skill, courage and character of the athletes in as many as 11 disciplines. “We transform the sports tournament into reallly spectacular event at Gulmarg.”

    He said that the second Khelo India was a huge success and today on the 3rd National winter Games event, the whole country is united, and the next five days are going to be great occasion to strive for the greatest victory to uphold the sportsmanship, equality, friendship and respect for the competitors.

    “Sports is such a medium which can change everything and it will not change the athletes behavior but can change whole scenario of the world. Just after three months we are going to hold the G20 meeting in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

    He also said Jammu and Kashmir tops the sports infrastructure in the whole country as “we have stadiums and play fields in every village.” “Our country was deprived of the soft power of sports from last 60 years but fortunately, the efforts of PM Modi paved the way and we are now at the stage of holding the mega sports events. PM Modi gave youth a Naya Asmaan and Naya Pankh,” he said.

    The LG said that for the last 8-9 years the country has produced a number of sports heroes and its all because of PM Modi. “Sports can give a new birth to the sustainable development and Sports ministry left no stone unturned to make Jammu and Kashmir a Sports centre of country.”

    The LG said J&K Sports Council is doing it’s best to promote the sports and have covered almost every district and every village.

    “The budget for the Jammu and Kashmir’s sports sector is higher as compared to other states of the country. Maharashtra is known for the highest budget for education and youth sports and if we combine both we are just 48 crores away from that highest budgeting state,” the LG said.

    SRINAGAR: Parts of Kashmir Valley including Gulmarg received fresh snowfall while rains lashed plains in the last 24 hours. The weather has improved and is likely to stay mainly dry for next 24 hours even though there are chances of scattered rains and snow at isolated places.

    Quoting a meteorological department official news agency GNS reported that Srinagar received 0.8mm of rain during the 24 hours till 0830 hours today, Qazigund 27.6mm, Kokernag 22.2mm while Pahalgam had 7.4cms of snow, Kupwara 32cm( over 1-ft) and Gulmarg 33 cms(over 1.1-ft). Rains also lashed Jammu region with Jammu city receiving 1.1mm, Banihal 49.1mm, Batote 27.3mm, Katra 3.1mm, Bhaderwah 31.4mm during the time, he said.

    Meanwhile, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 0.7°C against 0.4°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 0.5°C for the summer capital.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 2.0°C (above normal by 0.8°C), Batote 2.2°C (below normal by 0.4°C), Katra 10.6°C (2.5°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 2.1°C (1.9°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 8.0°C and minus 9.2°C respectively, the official said.

    Other events that lit the ambience of Snow Capped Gulmarg were Mashaal show by skiers besides LED dance group and Fire Cracker shows.

    Addressing on the occasion, Union Minister said Khelo India is one of the major sports events initiated by the government which has received overwhelming response and participation from across the country. He informed that 1500 players from across India are taking part in this 3rd edition of Khelo India to compete for different sports.

    “This will be a historical event which will give a unique and memorable experience to the participants,” Union Minister maintained.

    While sharing his first time experience of playing Snow Cricket at Tangmarg, Union Minister said, “I have played multiple games and Cricket but it was really great to play this pleasant sport which has given me a unique feeling”.

    He lauded the UT administration for launching this innovative game in J&K saying that efforts would be initiated to introduce this sport in other states having the similar climate.

    He complimented Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, led government for transforming sports profile of the UT and taking the fit India movement to every nook and corner of J&K.

    Srinagar, Feb 7: Barring Srinagar and Qazigund, the minimum temperature recorded a fall in Jammu and Kashmir with Gulmarg being the coldest place in the J&K at 7.0°C on Tuesday.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 2.7°C against 1.8°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 3.1°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 0.4°C against minus 1.6°C °C on the previous night and it was 1.9°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 5.9°C against minus 0.2°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.7°C against 1.1°C on the previous night and it was 1.3°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 7.0°C against minus 3.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury recorded a drop and settled at minus 1.0°C against minus 0.3°C on the previous night and it was 1.0°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 8.4°C against 11.9°C on the previous night. It was 1.1°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a drop by 4.0°C, recording a low of 0.2°C than previous night (overall below normal by 0.8°C). Batote, he said, recorded a low of 2.0°C (below normal by 0.2°C), Katra 8.8°C (1.4°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 0.2°C (0.5°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 11.4°C and minus 10.0°C respectively, the official said. While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 has ended, Kashmir is under the grip of a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’. It will be followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.

    Regarding the forecast, the MeT official said that the weather will be mainly dry during the next 24 hours.

    For subsequent two days, he said, there is a possibility of “isolated to widespread light to moderate rain, snow and thunders. (GNS)
