KTR raises objection to proposed Data Embassies in Gujarat

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana’s Minister for Information Technology K.T. Rama Rao on Thursday wrote a letter to the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, raising serious objections against the Budget proposal for establishing the Data Embassies in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT city).

The minister detailed the “huge risks” involved in establishing International Data Embassies at one location, that too in a state highly prone to earthquakes.

The letter also highlights the advantages that Hyderabad holds as an ideal location for data centres.

Moreover, this move might pose a security threat as the proposed location is in a state sharing a border with another country.

The Minister suggested that the interests of the client countries should also be considered while choosing the location of the Data Embassies.

KTR said that Hyderabad is in Seismic Zone-II, one of the least active seismic zones in India, which makes the city an ideal location for setting up data centres.

“In contrast, GIFT city is located in Seismic Zone-III and is very close to Seismic Zone-IV, indicating that the region is at a high risk for earthquakes. Developing international data embassies in such an area presents potential risks and could have significant consequences for international relations if critical infrastructure is impacted,” KTR added.

The minister said that after due diligence, global data centre majors chose Telangana to invest in setting up their large data centres.

From Amazon Web Services to Microsoft Azure, the state is now home to several hyperscale and edge data centres.

The minister said that the state government launched its Data Centre Policy in 2016, and offered several important incentives and approval provisions to facilitate the setting up of data centres.

Access to dual power grids, low-cost power supply and a high-speed fibre network are a few such provisions.

“The overall experience of the companies which have invested in Telangana has been extremely positive. The State will be happy to provide similar support to International Data Embassies,” the Minister remarked.

Further, KTR urged the Union Finance Minister to modify the Budget proposal to provide them with multiple locations that would suit their data security requirements.

KTR said that it would provide a level playing field for data infrastructure among the states.

Gujarat: Two arrested for assaulting Bank of India employee

    [ad_1]

Nadiad: The police have arrested two persons for assaulting an employee at Bank of India’s (BOI) Nadiad branch.

Manish Dhangar is serving as an officer with the Bank of India’s Nadiad-Kapadwanj branch, handling the loan desk.

In his complaint, Dhangar said, “On Friday afternoon, a customer named Samarth Brahmbhatt reached the branch and started beating me. He slapped me three to four times and even kicked me. When the other staff tried to intervene, Samarth’s friend Parth, who was accompanying him, kicked me.”

According to Dhangar, Samarth was angry with him and the bank because repeated calls were made to him to submit a copy of his house insurance policy.

Samarth had threatened over the phone that he will not submit the insurance policy.

Samarth had taken a home loan from the bank. During the audit, it was found that the customer had not submitted his house insurance policy, which was required since the house was not mortgaged with the bank.

The police have arrested both accused persons.

  • SC to hear plea against ban on BBC documentary on Gujarat riots on Friday

SC to hear plea against ban on BBC documentary on Gujarat riots on Friday

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court would hear a plea challenging the Centre’s decision to ban a BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots on Friday.

According to the cause list uploaded on the apex court website, a bench comprising justices Sanjiv Khanna and M.M. Sundresh will take up a petition filed by senior journalist N. Ram, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, and advocate Prashant Bhushan, and also another petition moved by advocate M.L. Sharma.

The documentary series, titled ‘India: The Modi Question’, has been dismissed as a biased “propaganda piece” by the government.

The plea filed by Sharma contended that the BBC documentary on Gujarat riots was released for public view. However, due to “fear of truth”, the documentary has been banned from viewership in India by any means under rule 16 of the IT Act 2021.

Sharma’s plea sought a direction for quashing of the January 21 order under the IT Act being illegal, malafide and arbitrary, unconstitutional and void ab-initio and ultra vires to the Constitution of India.

The documentary has been banned on social media and online channels, but some students have screened it on campuses of various universities across the country.

Sharma’s plea contended that the BBC documentary has reflected the true facts with original recordings of the victims of the 2002 riots as well as other concerned persons involved in the scenario of the riots, and it can be used for judicial justice.

A separate petition has been filed by journalist N. Ram, Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra, and advocate Prashant Bhushan against taking down their tweets with links to the documentary.

“The content of the BBC documentary and the tweets by Petitioner No. 2 (Bhushan) and 3 (Moitra) are protected under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution of India. The content of the documentary series do not fall under any of the restrictions specified under Article 19(2) or restrictions imposed under Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000,” said the plea filed by Ram and others.

The government has blocked sharing of any clips from the documentary on social media, prompting students’ organisations and opposition parties to organise its public screenings.

The plea by Ram and others argued that the apex court has categorically laid down that criticism of the government or its policies or even the judgment of the Supreme Court does not tantamount to violating the sovereignty and integrity of India.

“Censoring freedom of speech and expression of the petitioners by the executive through opaque orders and proceedings is manifestly arbitrary as it frustrates the fundamental right of the petitioners to effectively seek judicial review of administrative actions under Articles 226 and 32 of the Constitution of India in violation of the basic structure of the Constitution of India,” added the plea.

Gujarat Police arrests fake currency notes kingpin from Telangana

    [ad_1]

Rajkot: A police team from Gujarat’s Rajkot has arrested fake currency notes case prime accused Ramesh Babu Kasturi from Hyderabad, an official said on Wednesday.

Kasturi was arrested by the Telangana Police from Hyderabad in September 2022, but later released on bail and was back to printing fake currency notes.

The A Division Police Sub Inspector B.H. Parmar and his team had brought Ramesh Babu Kasutri on transit remand from Telangana and he was produced before a Rajkot court on Wednesday and it granted police 10 days remand, said police sources.

On January 20, Rajkot police had unearthed fake currency rackets, when two persons attempted to deposit fake currency with face value of Rs 2.50 lakh with an ‘Angadia Pedhi’ (traditional courier service) for money transfer. In this connection, police had arrested five persons, including one from Pune.

Kasturi and his sister K Rameshwari entered into fake currency notes printing, post pandemic, as they were in a financial crisis. Then, Telangana Police believed that the duo must have infused fake currency with a face value of at least Rs 60 to 70 lakh in the market, said sources.
