Gujarat Congress starts #daromat trend on Twitter to take on BJP

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: The social media department of the Gujarat unit of the Congress on Tuesday started a trend with #daromat on Twitter following the disqualification of party leader Rahul Gandhi as an MP.

More than 5,000 people tweeted with the hashtag within a few hours.

“Rahul Gandhi has given the slogan `Daro Mat’ (do not be afraid). Social media department of the Gujarat Congress has started a trend of tweeting our messages against this government’s fascist attitude on Tuesday morning with #daromat,” Congress spokesperson Hiren Banker said.

“We have asked people to tweet about difficulties faced by them. Thousands of people are tweeting,” he said.

State Congress chief Jagdish Thakor in a video message on his Twitter account said people should come out in large numbers and if required fill up the jails against this autocratic government.

“Congress did not get expected results in the December assembly elections. We have analysed the results. But with the 156 seats, this autocratic (BJP) government is suppressing the voice of people,” he said.

“Rahul Gandhi has given the slogan “Daro Mat” but fight. We should come out to fight and remove this government. This government will go. Don’t be afraid, if the need be we should not hesitate to go to jails and fill them up,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi was convicted in a criminal defamation case over his `Modi surname’ remark and was sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court on Thursday.

Gujarat govt paid Rs 16,900 cr in two years to Adani, Tata firms to buy electricity

    [ad_1]

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has paid Rs 16,900 crore to Adani Power and Tata Power for purchasing electricity during the last two years, the state Assembly was informed on Monday.

As per the data tabled by Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai during Question Hour, the state government paid Rs 8,160 crore to Adani Power Mundra Ltd while Rs 8,784 was paid to Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power, in 2021 and 2022.

While responding to a set of questions raised by Congress MLAs about the purchase of electricity from these private players, Desai said the state government paid Rs 2,760 crore to Adani Power in 2021 to buy 5,589 million units while Rs 5,400 crore was paid to the firm in 2022 for nearly 6,000 million units.

In 2021, the state government paid Rs 2,751 crore to Tata Power to buy 7,315 million units, while the cost came to Rs 6,033 crore for 10,446 million units in 2022.

The data suggested per unit cost of Rs 2.83 paid to Adani in January 2021 went up to Rs 8.83 per unit in December 2022 (provisional). Similarly, Tata Power charged Rs 4.92 per unit from the government in 2022 against Rs 1.80 in January 2021.

Desai said the per unit cost of electricity went up after 2018 due to “exponential rise” in the price of imported coal, which had forced such power generators to shut their plants in Gujarat.

To ensure people of Gujarat get uninterrupted power, the state government had signed new supplementary agreements with Adani to pay as per the actual cost of fuel, said Desai.

Again in 2021, when gas and imported coal prices saw significant rise, the state government, to ensure uninterrupted power supply, bought electricity from these firms under “special temporary arrangement” as approved by the Centre and state government, Desai said in the Assembly.

  • Skeletons Roll as Investigations into Conman’s Concoctions Reach Gujarat

Skeletons Roll as Investigations into Conman’s Concoctions Reach Gujarat

    [ad_1]

    by Raashid Andrabi

SRINAGAR: Kiran Patel, the Conman from Gujarat who was arrested in Srinagar for impersonating a top-ranking bureaucrat, has been making headlines since his arrest on March 3. As investigations continue, more details have emerged about his activities and associates.

    Who Is This 420?

Kiran Patel, a man hailing from Ghodasar area of Gujarat, was recently nabbed by security officials for posing as a top-ranking bureaucrat while on his third trip to the picturesque Kashmir. The daring imposter had been impersonating an additional director in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and enjoying security cover, including a personal security officer and an escort vehicle.

The charade came to a screeching halt when a complaint was lodged by the PMO, stating that no such position existed in their office. The police promptly swung into action and arrested Kiran Patel from a luxurious five-star hotel in Srinagar, where he had been living in style while enjoying his ill-gotten gains.

Patel made two visits to Srinagar in February to explore health resorts and discuss tourism growth, holding multiple meetings. He went even further, visiting Lal Chowk in Srinagar and Uri’s Kaman Post near the Line of Control, before being detained. In Budgam, he even abused a senior civil administration officer for not getting his superior to welcome him in the district.

    ‘Just An Engineer’

Kiran Patel’s wife, Malini Patel, has since come out in defence of her husband, claiming that he is an engineer who went to Jammu and Kashmir for development work and that he cannot do anything wrong.

Patel’s family claims that the allegations against him are baseless and subject to trial, and that it’s a reflection of some political rivalry. His advocate, Rehan Gohar raised concerns about how Patel managed to visit vulnerable places with high-level protocols that are usually only accessible to government officials. The police recorded Patel’s statement before a magistrate and released another person who was accompanying him in Nishad.

The police, however, have a different story. They allege that Kiran had been faking a position and using it to gain access to government officials and businesspersons, promising those favours in exchange for money. They have seized several documents and electronic devices from Kiran’s possession, which they believe will help them uncover the extent of his illegal activities.

This incident has raised concerns over the security arrangements in the region and the ease with which people can impersonate government officials and gain access to sensitive information.

    Not an ‘Intelligence Failure’

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have come under fire after it emerged that the conman was provided with security cover and a bulletproof vehicle during his stay in Kashmir. However, the ADGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar has claimed that this was not an intelligence failure but a “mistake” that is being investigated.

The ADGP has made it clear that any officer who ordered the provision of security cover to the Conman will be dealt with.

Reports suggest that the security cover was provided to Patel after a Deputy Commissioner made the request and sought the security cover. The officer has been questioned.

    Veteran PRO Official Resigns

Hitesh Pandya, an additional public relations officer in the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office, has resigned after serving for nearly 22 years. The resignation was due to the links between his son, Amit, a businessman associated with the BJP, and “conman” Kiran Pate. Pandya had served five chief ministers, including Narendra Modi, Anandiben Patel, and Bhupendra Patel.

Pandya confirmed that his son had visited J&K with Kiran Patel “for business purposes” with his approval, but he denied any knowledge of Patel’s links to the CMO. He stated that Patel was affiliated with a private organization called Nation First Foundation (NFF), which Pandya had established in 2011, to promote Modi’s ideologies. Pandya had relieved Patel and all individuals associated with him from NFF in 2011, citing improper billing and business practices, reported The Indian Express.

When asked specifically about Amit’s connection with Kiran Patel by The Indian Express, Pandya stated that they were both employed at a publicity company in 2004. Pandya came to the realization in 2011 that Patel was not someone they should associate themselves with, and therefore he relieved him and all the individuals associated with him from NFF.

After Amit’s “rare heart condition” in September 2022, their contact increased, and Pandya admitted that he didn’t warn his son about Kiran Patel. However, Pandya mentioned that he informed the Chief Minister and other relevant authorities about the case as soon as he found out about it from Amit.

Amit and Jay Sitapara had accompanied Patel to Srinagar and were in the room when police arrested the conman. They were permitted to go home. Later, when the pressure built up from Delhi, they were summoned to Srinagar and are being investigated by the police. It was against this backdrop that Pandya Sr submitted his papers.

    Four More Warrants

As the Srinagar racket started troubling Gujarat, the police have booked Kiran Patel along with his wife for cheating and criminal conspiracy. The Ahmadabad city crime branch has lodged a case against Patel for trying to usurp a senior citizen’s bungalow in the city using the same tactic.

The latest FIR alleges that Patel tried to grab a bungalow in a posh locality in Ahmedabad by winning the trust of its owner through false claims of being a “Class 1 officer in the PMO” and having close relations with politicians. Patel and his wife, Malini Patel, have been shown as co-accused in the FIR. The couple had put their own nameplate outside the bungalow and even did a house-warming ritual as if they were the owners.

Four FIRs related to cheating have been registered against Patel in different police stations of Gujarat in the past. Since he is in judicial custody in Jammu and Kashmir, authorities will try to bring him back to Gujarat through a transfer warrant.

  • Atiq Ahmed shifted from Gujarat to UP for court appearance

Atiq Ahmed shifted from Gujarat to UP for court appearance

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: A police team from Uttar Pradesh came to the Sabarmati central jail in Ahmedabad on Sunday and took gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed to Prayagraj, where he will be produced before a court on March 28 when it passes an order in a kidnapping case in which he is an accused, officials said.

The UP police team reached the Sabarmati jail in the morning and left the premises amid tight security with Ahmed in a police van around 6 pm after completing the necessary formalities, they said.

Ahmed, a former Samajwadi Party MP, has been lodged in the Sabarmati central jail since June 2019. He was shifted there from his home state as per the Supreme Court’s order.

“A court in Prayagraj has set March 28 as the date to pass its order in a kidnapping case in which Ahmed is an accused,” Prayagraj Police Commissioner Ramit Sharma said in the Uttar Pradesh city.

He said a team of the Prayagraj police was sent to Ahmedabad to bring Ahmed for his court appearance the given date.

“As part of the procedure, all the accused are to be produced before the court on the date of the judgment and then sent back to their respective jails,” the police officer said.

The Supreme Court had in April 2019 directed that the former MP from Phulpur in UP be shifted to a high-security jail in Gujarat after he was accused of orchestrating the kidnapping and assault of a real estate businessman Mohit Jaiswal while in jail.

He is named in more than 100 criminal cases, including the recent Umesh Pal murder case, police said.

Among the most sensational murders in which Ahmed is allegedly involved was that of Raju Pal, the MLA from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) who was shot dead in 2005. Umesh Pal, a key witness in this murder case, was gunned down outside his residence in Prayagraj on February 24 this year, they said.

Earlier this month, Ahmed had moved the Supreme Court for protection, claiming that he and his family were falsely implicated in the Umesh Pal murder case in Prayagraj and he may be killed in a fake encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police.

In his plea, Ahmed said the Uttar Pradesh police were in all likelihood seeking his transit remand and police remand to take him from Ahmedabad to Prayagraj and he “genuinely apprehends that he may be eliminated during this transit period”.

  • Gujarat CMO Veteran Resigns Over Son’s Ties To JK Conman

Gujarat CMO Veteran Resigns Over Son’s Ties To JK Conman

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Hitesh Pandya, an additional public relations officer in the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office, resigned on Friday evening after serving for nearly 22 years. The resignation was due to the links between his son, a businessman associated with the BJP, and “conman” Kiran Patel, who is currently in custody in J&K for impersonating an official from the Prime Minister’s Office. Pandya had served five chief ministers, including Keshubhai Patel, Narendra Modi, Anandiben Patel, Vijay Rupani, and Bhupendra Patel.

As per Hitesh Pandya’s statement, The Indian Express reported, “I have tendered my resignation to the Chief Minister (Bhupendra Patel). Nobody asked me to resign. I felt I should resign. I will wind up my pending work by March 31 and be relieved from the office.”

Hours before resigning, Hitesh Pandya confirmed to the newspaper The Indian Express that his son, Amit, had visited J&K with Kiran Patel “for business purpose” with his approval. Amit, along with another individual, Jay Sitapara, were present when Patel was arrested earlier this month. Both Amit and Sitapara have been summoned by the J&K police for questioning.

According to Pandya, his son is innocent and a witness in the case. He also mentioned that Amit deals in home security appliances and is associated with the BJP, having served as the party’s social media cell convener in North Zone till January 2023.

While denying any knowledge of Kiran Patel’s links to the CMO, Pandya admitted that Patel was affiliated with a private organization called Nation First Foundation (NFF), which Pandya had established in 2011.

“I founded the organization in 2011 to promote Modi saheb’s ideologies. Our work was solely focused on serving the nation. We conducted a Bharat Jago Abhiyan to create awareness among people about the BJP government’s initiatives and accomplishments… Kiran Patel joined the organization through Amit’s connection with him,” said Pandya as per The Indian Express.

When asked specifically about Amit’s connection with Kiran Patel, Pandya stated, “They were both employed at a publicity company in 2004. I knew Kiran as Amit’s friend. However, I came to the realization in 2011 that he was not someone we should associate ourselves with. Therefore, I relieved him and all the individuals associated with him from NFF. I found his business practices and billing to be improper… Kiran Patel then went on to establish his own organization.”

“Why would you break the relationship? He was keeping him away without snapping the relationship,” said Pandya when asked why he didn’t warn his son about Kiran Patel. However, their contact increased after Amit’s “rare heart condition” in September last year. “After Kiran’s arrest, Amit and Jay were kept in a hotel and their statements recorded. Then, they were let go and told that they will have to come whenever called. His statement was recorded as a witness,” he explained.

Pandya also mentioned that he informed the Chief Minister and other relevant authorities about the case as soon as he found out about it from Amit.

Pandya has been associated with the Gujarat CMO for over two decades, joining in 2001 as an assistant PRO. Before that, he worked at Life Corporation of India and the Rajkot daily “Phulchhab”.

  • Godhra train case: SC to hear pleas of Gujarat govt, convicts on Apr 10

Godhra train case: SC to hear pleas of Gujarat govt, convicts on Apr 10

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday said it will dispose of the bail pleas of several convicts serving life imprisonment in the 2002 Godhra train burning case on April 10.

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud took note of the submissions of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Gujarat government, that he has to verify certain factual details with regard to some convicts.

The bench, also comprising justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala, considered the submissions of the law officer and adjourned the hearing to April 10, and said it will “dispose of” the pending bail pleas of the convicts on that day.

The bench, meanwhile, extended the bail granted to one of the convicts earlier on the ground that his wife was suffering from cancer.

“His wife is suffering from cancer. My consent may be recorded,” said the law officer while supporting the extension of bail.

Earlier on March 17, the top court had said it will hear on March 24 the appeal of the Gujarat government and the bail pleas of several accused in the case.

On February 20, the state government had told the top court that it will be seeking award of death penalty to 11 convicts whose sentences in the 2002 Godhra train burning case were commuted to life imprisonment by the Gujarat High Court.

“We will be seriously pressing for award of death penalty to the convicts whose death penalties were commuted into life imprisonment (by the Gujarat High Court). This is the rarest of rare cases where 59 people, including women and children, were burnt alive,” the solicitor general had said.

“It is consistent everywhere that the bogei (coach) was locked from outside. Fifty-nine died, including ladies and children,” he had added.

Giving details, the law officer had said 11 convicts were sentenced to death by a trial court and 20 others granted life term in the case.

The high court upheld total 31 convictions in the case and commuted the death penalties of the 11 convicts to life term, Mehta had said.

On February 27, 2002, 59 people were killed when the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express was burnt at Gujarat’s Godhra, triggering riots in the state.

The state government has come in appeal against the commutation of death penalty into life term for 11 convicts, Mehta said. Several accused, he added, have filed pleas against the high court upholding their convictions in the case.

The top court has granted bail to two convicts in the case so far. Seven other bail pleas are pending adjudication in the matter.

The bench noted that a large number of bail applications have been filed before it in the case and said, “It has been agreed that the AORs (advocates-on-record) on behalf of applicants along with advocate Swati Ghildiyal, standing counsel for Gujarat, shall prepare a comprehensive chart with all relevant details. List after three weeks.” The Supreme Court had on January 30 sought the Gujarat government’s response on the bail pleas of some of the convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in the case.

The court issued notice to the state government on the bail pleas of Abdul Raheman Dhantia alias Kankatto and Abdul Sattar Ibrahim Gaddi Asla, among others.

The state government, on the other hand, said it was not “merely a stone pelting” case as the convicts had bolted a coach of the Sabarmati Express, leading to the death of several passengers on the train.

“Some are saying their role was just stone pelting. But when you lock a bogei from outside, light it on fire and then pelt stones, it is not just stone pelting,” the solicitor general had said.

On December 15, last year, the top court granted bail to Faruk, who was serving a life sentence in the case and noted that he had been in jail for 17 years.

Faruk, along with several others, was convicted for pelting stones at a coach of the train.

Gujarat Police File Cheating Case Against Conman, Custody May Follow

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Gujarat state’s Ahmedabad Crime Branch has filed a fresh First Information Report (FIR) against Kiran Patel, a fraudster who posed as a PMO (Prime Minister’s Office) official and deceived the security establishment in Kashmir to obtain various benefits before being apprehended earlier this month.

According to an official who spoke to news agency KDC, the Ahmadabad Crime Branch has lodged a fresh FIR against Kiran Patel, dubbed a ‘conman’, after being arrested by a team of Srinagar police based on information from the CID department. Patel had posed as an additional director (strategy and campaigns) at the Prime Minister’s Office and received numerous benefits, such as a bulletproof car, security protection, and various other amenities.

The official stated that the police station of Ahmadabad’s Crime Branch in Gujarat state has registered a new FIR (number 11191011230073) against Kiran Patel under sections 406, 420, 170, and 120 B.

Sources have verified that a two-member team from the Crime Branch has been dispatched to Srinagar to assume the custody of Kiran Patel from the Srinagar police.

The initial report of the arrest of the fraudster, hailing from Gujarat, who had allegedly used fake credentials to pose as an Additional Director (Strategy & Campaigns) of the Prime Minister’s Office in New Delhi, was published by the Srinagar-based news agency, KDC. The arrest had taken place at Hotel Lalit in Srinagar, in a significant case handled by the Srinagar police.

An FIR number 19 of 2023 was registered by Srinagar police in Police Station Nishat in Srinagar, reads “On 02-03-2023 a reliable information received by Police Station Nishat has revealed that a fraudster namely Kiran Bhai Patel son of Jagdesh Bhai Patel resident of Gujarat has by virtue of criminal intention indulged in activities within the jurisdiction of this police station and other parts of Kashmir valley and by employing high degree of forged means. Kiran Bhai has impersonated himself as a senior government official of India.”

“The said individual, by resorting to cheating, forgery and impersonation has duped gullible people and also intentionally induced people to do and also to omit to do activities, under a well-knit plan for securing monetary as well as material benefits,” reads the FIR.

The imposter had taken the J&K administration and security structure for a ride by securing Z-plus security cover, a bulletproof Mahindra Scorpio SUV, official accommodation at a five-star hotel, and a lot more,” reads the FIR.

On Thursday, after hearing the arguments of the counsel representing Patel and additional public prosecutor, the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Srinagar Raja Mohammad Tasleem found the bail plea “devoid of any merit”.

“I am of the considered opinion that arguments advanced by APP are just, proper and appealing and carries much weight and on the other hand I respectfully disagree with the submission put forth by Counsel for the applicant (Patel) because in case at this stage discretion of bail is exercised in favour of the accused it shall definitely destroy the very fabric of the investigation,” the court said. “Resultantly, in my considered opinion the instant application is devoid of any merit which deserves to be rejected, hence rejected.” (KDC)

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Former chief minister of erstwhile J&K state and National Conference (NC) vice president, Omar Abdullah on Saturday said that the present government in J&K is not for the people, but to appease the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Reacting to the Conman from Gujarat arrested in Srinagar, Omar while addressing a gathering in Kulgam said that it is the worthlessness of the present government, who was busy appeasing the fake conman from Gujarat.

According to the news agency KNO, he alleged that it is the fourth such incident, adding that it has been heard that three have already left for their places.

“How worthless this government is. The conman was given security, chaired meetings of officers, and also visited the Line of Control in Uri. Without confirmation from the PMO office, the administration was busy appeasing the conman. This government is not for the people, but to appease PMO,” he said, adding that this is the difference between the present government and the elected government. (KNO)
