  • Conman Kiran Patel Handed Over To Gujarat Police

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR:  Jammu and Kashmir police handed over conman Kiran Bhai Patel to Gujarat police on Wednesday, following a local court’s order to transfer him to the police team of the Ahmedabad city crime branch for investigation in a fraud case, as per official sources.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar, Raja Tasleem, issued an order stating that “the accused Kiranbhai @Bansi son of Jagdishbhai Patel aged 48, residing at A-17, Prestige Bungalow, Nr Jiviba School, Ghodasar, and Ahmedabad City Gujarat was produced through video conferencing. After hearing and from the perusal of all material available on the CD file, I believe the submissions made by the Ld AAP and Inspector of Police Mr. M.M Solanki carry much weight and at the same time seem to be just proper and appealing.”

According to the order, “the custody of the accused namely Kiranbhai @Bansi son of Jagdishbhai Patel aged 48, residing at A-17, Prestige Bungalow, Nr  Jiviba School, Ghodasar, Ahmedabad City Gujarat is changing from FIR No 19/2023 of police station Nishat to FIR No 1119011230073/2023 of DCB police Station Ahmedabad city, Gujarat.”

Kiran Patel has been handed over to a five-member police team of Gujarat police after completing medico-legal formalities. “The application was presented by Inspector of Police M.M Solanki, of Crime Branch, Ahmedabad Gujarat,” said official sources. They added, “the police team has left for Ahmedabad by road and further process of investigation will start in a graft case registered by Ahmedabad Crime Branch once they will reach.”

According to official sources, Kiran Patel was being held in judicial custody in Jammu and Kashmir for allegedly impersonating an Additional Director of the Prime Minister’s Office and receiving benefits. The Gujarat police had requested a transfer warrant, which was subsequently granted by a local court in Srinagar.

Meanwhile, Kiran Patel’s wife, Malini Patel, was taken into custody by the Gujarat Police in connection with a cheating case registered against the couple by Jagdish Chavda, brother of a former Gujarat minister. Malini Patel was arrested in Jambusar town of Bharuch district, with the FIR being filed against the couple on March 22 under sections 406, 420, 170, and 120B of the Indian Penal Code, said the Ahmedabad Crime Branch.

According to police, as authorities started investigating the Patel family, Jagdish Chavda approached the police to register a case against them. Kiran Patel had allegedly claimed to work at the PMO and co-own a popular cafe in Ahmedabad, as well as being involved in building renovations.

Last year, the couple convinced Chavda to spend on renovating his bungalow in the Shilaj area that he was trying to sell. While renovation work was ongoing, the couple allegedly moved into the bungalow, even putting up their own nameplate, and organized a housewarming ceremony. When Chavda confronted the couple, they left, but promised to return the ₹35 lakhs he had paid for the renovation.

However, in August last year, Chavda received a notice from an Ahmedabad court for a civil suit filed by the Patels claiming ownership of the property. Chavda is the brother of Jawahar Chavda, who exited the Congress to join the BJP and was a minister in a previous government when Vijay Rupani was chief minister.

During questioning, Malini Patel allegedly told the police that her husband and brother-in-law, Manish Patel, previously operated a travel agency in Ahmedabad that ran into losses. The police said that she underlined that she wasn’t aware of what her husband does for a living and that they carried out some renovation work in Chavda’s bungalow and also invited some guests for ‘Vastu Puja’ when the owner was away, according to the police statement.

The statement added that Kiran Patel, his wife Malini, and their two daughters traveled to Jammu and Kashmir on holiday in October last year and February this year and stayed at a five-star hotel from where he was arrested on March 2.

Apart from the bungalow case, Malini Patel is also named as an accused, along with her husband and brother-in-law, in a fraud case in which a resident of Naroda, Rahul Parmar, alleged that they convinced him to become a part of their business of renting cars to the Vadtal Swaminarayan temple. According to the FIR registered in 2019, Parmar alleged that he and his friends gave the Patels 16 cars worth ₹1 crore in 2017 but did not get back the vehicles or his share of the profits.

Kiran Patel has been booked in four other cases of fraud, including an FIR lodged against him by a group of farmers on August 27, 2019, at Bayad police station, according to the police statement.

It was the first Srinagar-based news agency, Kashmir Dot Com, that broke this story: “Srinagar police, in a high-profile case, have arrested this conman, a resident of ‘Gujarat,’ allegedly by forged means posing as Additional Director (Strategy & Campaigns) Prime Minister’s Office, New Delhi, at Hotel Lalit in Srinagar on specific input received by CID wing of J&K Police.”

The imposter had taken the J&K administration and security structure for a ride by securing a Z-plus security cover, a bulletproof Mahindra Scorpio SUV, official accommodation at a five-star hotel, and a lot more.

A court in Srinagar has also ordered a “preliminary inquiry” into an application by Danish Hassan Dar, a resident of Rambagh Srinagar, alleging defrauding of Rs 18 lakh by three persons, including Kiran Bhai Patel.

Pertinently, on March 29, the government ordered an inquiry into the various aspects related to the visits of Kiran Patel and has asked the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to submit a detailed report within a week. (KDC)

  • NCERT textbook row: Reference to Gujarat riots dropped from class 11 Sociology book

NCERT textbook row: Reference to Gujarat riots dropped from class 11 Sociology book

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A portion referring to the Gujarat riots has been dropped from the class 11 Sociology textbook by NCERT, months after it removed the reference to the 2002 communal violence in two class 12 textbooks.

The purged paragraph from the class 11 textbook was not announced in the curriculum rationalisation booklet notified by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) last year.

NCERT Director Dinesh Saklani, however, claimed that the change was approved during the same exercise and it did not find mention in the official notification due to an “oversight”.

    MS Education Academy

In the class 11 Sociology textbook titled “Understanding Society”, the deleted paragraph talked about how class, religion and ethnicities often lead to segregation of residential areas and it then cites the communal violence in Gujarat in 2002 to illustrate how communal violence furthers ghettoisation.

“Where and how people will live in cities is a question that is also filtered through socio-cultural identities. Residential areas in cities all over the world are almost always segregated by class, and often also by race, ethnicity, religion and other such variables. Tensions between such identities both cause these segregation patterns and are also a consequence,” the purged paragraph read.

“For example, in India, communal tensions between religious communities, most commonly Hindus and Muslims, results in the conversion of mixed neighbourhoods into single-community ones. This in turn gives a specific spatial pattern to communal violence whenever it erupts, which again furthers the ‘ghettoisation’ process. This has happened in many cities in India, most recently in Gujarat following the riots of 2002,” it added.

According to Centre’s reply tabled in the Parliament earlier, 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were killed, 223 were reported missing and 2,500 injured in the Gujarat riots of 2002.

As part of its “syllabus rationalisation” exercise last year, the NCERT, citing “overlapping” and “irrelevant” as reasons, dropped certain portions from the course including lessons on Gujarat riots, Mughal courts, Emergency, Cold War, Naxalite movement, among others from its textbooks.

The council had then announced dropping the Gujarat riots reference in class 12 Political Science and Sociology textbook.

In the class 12 political science textbook, two whole pages on the riots in the chapter titled “Politics in India Since Independence” have been deleted.

The first page carried the chronology of events and refered to the National Human Rights Commission’s criticism of the Gujarat government for failing to control the violence.

“Instances, like in Gujarat, alert us to the dangers involved in using religious sentiments for political purposes. This poses a threat to democratic politics,” the deleted portion read.

The second page carried a collage of three newspaper reports on the riots along with an excerpt of NHRC’s observation from its Annual Report of 2001-2002 on the Gujarat government’s handling of the riots. Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s famous “Raj dharma” remark in this section was also removed.

In the class 12 sociology textbook, NCERT had dropped a paragraph under the section titled “Communalism, Secularism and the Nation-State” which described how communalism “drives people to kill, rape, and loot members of other communities in order to redeem their pride, to protect their home turf”.

Besides the Gujarat riots reference, “Gandhiji’s death had magical effect on communal situation in the country”, “Gandhi’s pursuit of Hindu-Muslim unity provoked Hindu extremists” and “Organisations like RSS were banned for some time” are among the portions missing from the class 12 political science textbook for the new academic session.

  • Gujarat AAP MLA demands separate state of ‘Bhil Pradesh’ for tribals

Gujarat AAP MLA demands separate state of ‘Bhil Pradesh’ for tribals

    [ad_1]

Rajpipla: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and tribal leader Chaitar Vasava on Tuesday raised anew the demand for a separate state of `Bhil Pradesh’ for the tribal populations in Gujarat and the three neighbouring states.

BJP MP and fellow tribal leader Mansukh Vasava, however, said that this will create “anarchy” and friction between the tribal communities and others.

“History tells us that there was a separate state called Bhil Pradesh. But after independence that state was divided and its parts were merged into different states such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra,” Chaitar Vasava, first-time MLA from the Scheduled Tribes-reserved Dediapada seat in Gujarat’s Narmada district, said.

    MS Education Academy

Bharatiya Tribal Party’s founder and former MLA Chhotubhai Vasava had raised this demand in the recent past.

The AAP MLA was speaking to reporters.

There are 39 tribal-dominated districts across these four states which formed the old Bhil Pradesh, he claimed.

The Fifth Schedule of the Constitution (which has provisions regarding the administration and control of Scheduled Areas) is still applicable to these districts, Chaitar Vasava said.

A delegation headed by Chhotubhai Vasava had handed over a memorandum containing this demand to then President Pratibha Patil several years ago, he noted.

“If you continue to do injustice to the tribal people, we will definitely raise the demand for a separate Bhil Pradesh,” the young leader added.

In Kevadia, where the Statue of Unity stands, thousands of hectares of land belonging to tribal communities was given away to outsiders for various projects, he said.

“As a result, tribals of the area, who were the real owners of the land, are now reduced to working as labourers for Rs 280 per day,” said Vasava.

“Since our rights on our Jal, Jungle and Jamin (water, forest and land) are being snatched away, we are again raising this demand for a seperate Bhil Pradesh,” he said.

Tribal areas are rich in water, timber and deposits of coal as well as other minerals but they remain underdeveloped and the BJP government in Gujarat diverted the budget meant for tribal communities, he claimed.

Opposing the demand, Mansukh Vasava, BJP Member of Parliament from Bharuch, said, “This demand will create anarchy in many areas. It will also create friction between tribals and non-tribals, which will eventually affect the implementation of developmental projects in tribal areas.”

Former Dahod MP Somjibhai Damor originally started a movement for a separate state for tribals but it did not find any takers, he said.

“Other tribal leaders also tried to revive this movement afterwards but they too received lukewarm response because majority of the population does not support it,” the BJP leader said.

Instead of demanding a separate state, these leaders should draw the government’s attention to what is lacking and how schemes meant for tribals can be implemented properly, he added.

Capitals are playing their first home game of the season after 2019 while the Titans are featuring in their first away match of the tournament, with the pitch described to be a flat one with a slight tinge of grass.

After winning the toss, Pandya said South Africa batter David Miller and uncapped India batter B. Sai Sudharsan come in for injured Kane Williamson, who is ruled out of the tournament, and all-rounder Vijay Shankar.

“Not sure how the wicket is going to play. Obviously losing Kane — we’re gutted. Especially for him. As a team, we can manage but are gutted for him. Not much talking in our team. Just about keeping things simple and focusing on controllable. Pitch looks fantastic. Dew might kick in later.”

Delhi skipper David Warner said young wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel will make his IPL debut, with Anrich Nortje coming in for Rovman Powell, along with Khaleel Ahmed and Chetan Sakariya relegated to impact player substitutes.

“Just bat better, bowl better and field better than the opposition. Have to come out with positive intent and post a good total. It’s awesome. What a good turnout it is tonight. Hopefully, we can make it our fortress.”

US-Canada border deaths: Four of the deceased from Gujarat

    [ad_1]

Mehsana: A family in Mehsana district in Gujarat believes the Indians who were among the eight who died while trying to cross into the United States of America from Canada recently are their kin.

Jasubhai Chaudhary, a resident of Manekpur village in Vijapur taluka here, on Sunday said his brother, sister-in-law and their two children had left for Canada two months ago on a visitors’ visa, adding reports of eight persons, including some Indians, being found in a marsh there had vexed kin here.

Canadian police have said the deceased, who were found on the banks of St Lawrence River near Akwesasne, a community that straddles Quebec, Ontario, and New York State, is believed to be two families of Indian and Romanian descent and were crossing into USA.

    MS Education Academy

“Two months ago, my brother, his wife, and two children went to Canada on a visitors’ visa. Yesterday morning I learned about the death of members of a family from India in Canada. I tried to contact my brother but was not able to do so. This caused suspicion that they were our family members,” Chaudhary told reporters.

A Mehsana district administration official said Malekpura village residents approached the collector with a request to make arrangements for the bodies of the four deceased to be brought back to their native village.

“It is confirmed that four members of a family from Manekpur village in Vijapur taluka of Mehsana went to Canada on a visitor’s visa and tried to cross the river. The villagers approached us seeking help to bring back their bodies, which we have reported to the state government,” the official said.

Chaudhary said the family’s suspicion was confirmed after they found that the names of the victims circulating on Whatsapp groups of his relatives settled in Canada were that of his brother, wife and two children.

He identified the four who left for Canada Praveeni Chaudhary (50), his wife Diksha (45), son Meet (20), and daughter Vidhi (24).

Former state home minister Vipul Chaudhary told reporters the government should make arrangements for the bodies of the victims to be brought back here, and termed it a very sad and shocking incident.

If something untoward of this sort happens, then the government must ensure the bodies are brought back, the former minister added. On January 19 last year, four members of a family from Dingucha village in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar froze to death while trying to illegally cross into USA from Canada.

Gujarat: Kajal Hindusthani booked for hate speech, 50 detained for communal clash

    [ad_1]

Gir Somnath: Police have registered a first information report (FIR) against a right-wing leader for her alleged hate speech and detained more than 50 people on the charge of rioting following a communal clash at Una town in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath that left two persons injured, an official said on Sunday.

The communal clash erupted in a sensitive area of Una town on Saturday night with two groups hurling stones at each other amid tension caused by the speech of one Kajal Hindustani at a ‘Hindu Sammelan’ organised on the occasion of Ram Navami on Thursday, in which she allegedly targeted the Muslim community.

Una town had been on edge since the alleged hate speech. With traders keeping markets shut, the police and local leaders had on Saturday called for a peace committee meeting involving representatives of both communities who ensured normalcy. But hours after the meeting, a clash broke out in the communally sensitive area, police said.

    MS Education Academy

“We have registered two FIRs. One is against Kajal Hindustani for hate speech, and another against the mob for rioting,” Superintendent of Police Sripal Sheshma told reporters.

“We have detained 50 to 60 people and are going through the CCTV footage. We are using local intelligence and questioning the detained persons for further action. The accused will not be spared and strict action will be taken against them,” he said.

Police personnel has been deployed in sensitive areas with some of them patrolling and some posted at static points. All the officers are available on call and all distress calls are being addressed on an immediate basis, he said.

“Two State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) teams have been deployed in Una so far in this case,” he said.

The leaders participating in the peace committee meeting reached a resolution, but the message did not reach the young generation and this led to a small incident of stone pelting, police said.

Police carried out combing operations during the night in Una town and seized a number of swords, rods and other such objects from some houses.

    Nine held in Vadodara

Meanwhile, the police in Vadodara city the state on Saturday night arrested a right-wing activist Rohan Shah and some others for “hate speech” during a Ram Navami procession in the city on Thursday. The case against them was registered under sections 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, and residence) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Shah is a local leader of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP).

Vadodara police said they have also arrested one Mohammad Vora for allegedly posting an edited video on Facebook with the intention of spreading communal enmity.

Members of two communities clashed after stones were hurled at two Ram Navami processions in Vadodara on Thursday, with the police registering FIRs and arresting dozens of people.

Amul hikes milk price in Gujarat

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) on Saturday hiked the Amul milk price by Rs 2 per litre in the state.

This marks the first increase in milk prices since the state Assembly elections in December 2022.

The GCMMF, which is the apex body of milk cooperatives in the state, typically announces milk price hikes in advance but did not do so this time. Sources suggest that the rise in cost of milk production due to increasing fodder and transportation prices has led to the price hike.

    MS Education Academy

After the price revision, the cost of Amul buffalo milk is now Rs 68 per litre, while Amul Gold is priced at Rs 64 per litre, and Amul Shakti at Rs 58 per litre. Amul Cow Milk is now priced at Rs 54 per litre, Amul Tazaa at Rs 52 per litre, and Amul T-special at Rs 60 per litre.

While the prices of different brands of Amul milk were hiked twice across India by GCMMF in the last six months, Gujarat was exempted. However, ahead of the Assembly elections in the state, Amul had raised prices by Rs 2 per litre in October 2022, and then by another Rs 3 in February 2023 for all markets, except Gujarat.

  • Gujarat HC’s order on PM Modi’s degree raises more suspicion: Kejriwal

Gujarat HC’s order on PM Modi’s degree raises more suspicion: Kejriwal

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: People, who have the right to know about the academic qualification of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, are “stunned” by the Gujarat High Court’s verdict, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Saturday.

The Gujarat High Court on Friday quashed a seven-year-old order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) which had asked the Gujarat University to provide information on Modi’s degree to Kejriwal.

Allowing the Gujarat University’s appeal against the CIC order, Justice Biren Vaishnav also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Kejriwal and asked him to deposit the amount within four weeks to the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority (GSLSA).

“Entire country is stunned by the High Court’s order because there should be a freedom of seeking information and asking questions in a democracy,” Kejriwal said at a press conference here.

“The High court’s order has increased the suspicion over the prime minister’s education,” he charged.

If the prime minister had studied from Gujarat University or Delhi University, they should have been celebrating it, instead they are hiding the information, the Delhi chief minister said.

“If there is a valid degree of Modi, why Gujarat University is not showing it,” he asked.

There can only be two reasons why Gujarat university is not ready to give information on the prime minister’s academic qualification it’s either due to Modi’s arrogance, or, his degree is fake, Kejriwal said.

He, however, went on to add that being illiterate is not “a crime or sin” as there is so much poverty in the country. “Many of us are not in a position to get formal education due to financial conditions in the families.”

Such rank poverty continues to afflict the nation even after 75 years of independence, he added.

Kejriwal pressed on with his question on Modi’s education, saying the question becomes imperative since being the “top manager” of the country, Modi has to take so many important decisions every day, including those pertaining to science and economy.

“If the prime minister is not educated then the officers and various types of people will come and get his signature anywhere, get passed from him anything, like the note ban (demonetisation) due to which the country had to suffer a lot,” he charged.

“If the prime minister modi was educated he would not have implemented the note ban,” the CM added.
