Conman Kiran Patel Arrested In Fifth Case Filed In Gujarat

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Kiran Patel, a fraudster who was apprehended by the Jammu & Kashmir police in March of this year for purportedly presenting himself as an employee of the Prime Minister’s Office, has now been taken into custody by the Ahmedabad City Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) for an additional incident of impersonation, deception, and violation of trust. This marks Kiran’s fifth criminal case in Gujarat.

Following a complaint by Hardik Chandarana (37), the proprietor of RX Events, an event management company located in Ahmedabad’s Ambawadi area, DCB personnel apprehended Kiran after registering an FIR on Saturday, Reported The Indian Express.

The Indian Express reported that Kiran Patel is accused of deceiving Hardik Chandarana, the proprietor of RX Events, by requesting him to arrange a “G20 event” at a luxurious hotel in Ahmedabad city in January and making off with Rs 3.51 lakh. Chandarana claimed in the FIR that Patel contacted him in January 2023 and requested him to arrange an event. Patel then came to Chandarana’s office in Ambawadi on January 10, discussed the event, shared the guest list via WhatsApp while sitting there, and settled on the Hyatt Hotel on Ashram Road as the location.

Patel claimed to work at the Prime Minister’s Office and was assigned to the “Kashmir development project.” Chandarana claims that Patel also promised to provide him with work on a large medical conference in Kashmir.

“Patel sent me his visiting card to gain my confidence,” said Chandarana, who claimed that the card identified Patel as “additional director (strategy and campaigns)” in the PMO and listed his address as “34, Meena Baug Flats, opposite Vigyan Bhavan, off Janpath road, New Delhi, 110001.” Chandarana stated in the complaint that he made arrangements for the “G20 Summit – Scope and Priorities for Various Industries” event, and received event banners and a guest list with photographs from Patel. Patel also added Chandarana to a WhatsApp group called “29th Event @ Hyatt.”

The event reportedly took place on January 29, and Chandarana claims to have paid Rs 1.91 lakh for it. The FIR alleges that Patel informed Chandarana that they would need to go to Srinagar from February 8 to 10 to prepare for a medical conference. “So, I booked air tickets and made a booking at the Lalit hotel in Srinagar, and stayed there, the cost of which was around Rs 1.60 lakh. He also showed me the venue for the conference, on February 10, which was to be held in the near future,” Chandarana said in the FIR. Patel is accused of cheating Chandarana out of Rs 3.51 lakh in total.

Following his extradition from Jammu & Kashmir, Patel was brought to Gujarat by state police on April 8 and arrested in connection with a case of cheating and breach of trust filed by Jagdish Chavda, the brother of former BJP minister Jawahar Chavda. Patel’s wife, Malini, is also a co-accused in the case, which alleges that the couple swindled Chavda of Rs 15 crore under the guise of renovating his residential property in the Shilaj area of Ahmedabad in 2022. Malini was taken into custody on March 29, and after a six-day remand by a local court in Ahmedabad, she was sent to judicial custody.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCB, Chaitanya Mandalik, Patel remained in police custody until Saturday in connection with the Chavda case. He was then arrested in the latest case registered by Chandarana, and a magisterial court has granted four days of police remand for him, Mandalik added.

Gujarat: Couple behead themselves using guillotine-like device as sacrificial ritual

    [ad_1]

Rajkot: A man and his wife allegedly committed suicide by decapitating themselves using a guillotine-like device, which they created at home, so that they could offer their heads for a sacrificial ritual in Gujarat’s Rajkot district, police said on Sunday.

Hemubhai Makwana (38) and his wife Hansaben (35) killed themselves by getting their heads severed by the blade of the device in a hut at their farm in Vinchhiya village, sub-inspector Indrajeetsinh Jadeja of Vinchhiya police station said.

The husband-wife duo executed the plan in such a manner that their heads rolled into the fire altar after getting severed, he said, adding that a suicide note was found at the spot.

“The couple first prepared a fire altar before putting their heads under a guillotine-like mechanism held by a rope. As soon as they released the rope, an iron blade fell on them, severing their heads, which rolled into the fire,” Jadeja said.

The ritual was performed between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon when the police were informed, he said, adding that a suicide note was recovered from the spot.

The family members of the couple said the duo had been offering prayers in the hut every day since the last one year, he said.

The couple has two children, parents and other relatives living nearby, who learnt about the incident on Sunday morning and informed the police, the official said.

A suicide note was also recovered from the couple’s possession, in which they urged their relatives to take care of their parents and children, he said.

A case of accidental death was registered and the bodies were sent for post-mortem, the official added.

Gujarat HC rejects pleas to reopen sealed meat shops

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday rejected applications filed by the owners of meat shops and slaughter houses closed by authorities, stating that the freedom to do business can not override the public health norms.

A division bench of Justices N V Anjaria and Niral Mehta rejected a batch of civil applications filed by the owners of meat and poultry shop and slaughter houses who had requested that they be permitted to operate, especially during the month of Ramadan.

“The freedom to trade or right to do business have to yield to the public health norms and restrictive compulsions needed to be enforced in larger public good. The right to free trade in food items like meat, or any such food has to be subserving to public health and food safety requirements,” the high court said.

    MS Education Academy

State authorities closed a large number of shops after the court directed compliance of licensing and regulatory norms, food and safety standards and pollution control requirements among other things.

The affected owners submitted before the court that the closure was illegal and violated their right of free trade under Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution.

Rejecting the applications, the court observed that they could hardly be permitted to be reopened unless they become fully compliant with norms and regulations.

“Intervention is not called for by the court when it comes to abiding by the food safety etc. norms. It would be an overriding principle that the public concerns of hygiene and food safety will have to prevail,” it said.

On the request of owners of poultry shops to be given relief because poultry birds should not be treated as ‘animals,’ the court said that the term ‘animal’ under section 2(a) of the Food Safety Act includes any living creature.

“Learned senior advocates for the applicants submitted that an exception may be made for them, as they are small livelihood earners. The submission could not be countenanced since it is not for the court to rewrite the legislative definition and give effect to it accordingly,” the court said.

Authorities had taken action following the court’s direction on a Public Interest Litigation seeking implementation of the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court regarding illegal slaughterhouses.

  • Godhra train burning case: SC to hear pleas of Gujarat govt, convicts on Monday

Godhra train burning case: SC to hear pleas of Gujarat govt, convicts on Monday

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday bail pleas of several convicts serving life imprisonment in the 2002 Godhra train burning case.

A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala is scheduled to hear along with the bail applications a batch of pleas of the convicts challenging their convictions.

On March 24, the top court had said it will dispose of the bail applications of the convicts on the next date of hearing of the matter.

    MS Education Academy

It had taken note of the submissions of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Gujarat government, that he has to verify certain factual details with regard to some convicts.

The top court had, however, extended the bail granted to one of the convicts on the ground that his wife was suffering from cancer. Mehta had supported the extension of bail on medical grounds.

Earlier on March 17, the top court had said it will hear on March 24 the appeal of the Gujarat government and the bail pleas of several accused in the case.

On February 20, the state government had told the top court that it will be seeking death penalty to 11 convicts whose sentences in the 2002 Godhra train burning case were commuted to life imprisonment by the Gujarat High Court.

“We will be seriously pressing for award of death penalty to the convicts whose death penalties were commuted into life imprisonment (by the Gujarat High Court). This is the rarest of rare cases where 59 people, including women and children, were burnt alive,” the solicitor general had said.

“It is consistent everywhere that the bogie (coach) was locked from outside. Fifty-nine died, including ladies and children,” he had added.

Giving details on the court case, the law officer had said 11 convicts were sentenced to death by a trial court and 20 others granted life term in the case.

The high court upheld total 31 convictions in the case and commuted the death penalties of the 11 convicts to life term, Mehta had said.

On February 27, 2002, 59 people were killed when the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express was burnt at Gujarat’s Godhra, triggering riots in the state.

The state government has come in appeal against the commutation of death penalty into life term for 11 convicts, Mehta had said. Several accused, he added, have filed pleas against the high court upholding their convictions in the case.

The top court has granted bail to two convicts in the case so far. Seven other bail pleas are pending adjudication in the matter.

The bench noted that a large number of bail applications have been filed before it in the case and said, “It has been agreed that the AORs (advocates-on-record) on behalf of applicants along with advocate Swati Ghildiyal, standing counsel for Gujarat, shall prepare a comprehensive chart with all relevant details. List after three weeks.”

The Supreme Court had on January 30 sought the Gujarat government’s response on the bail pleas of some of the convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in the case.

The court issued notice to the state government on the bail pleas of Abdul Raheman Dhantia alias Kankatto and Abdul Sattar Ibrahim Gaddi Asla, among others.

The state government, on the other hand, said it was not “merely a stone pelting” case as the convicts had bolted a coach of the Sabarmati Express, leading to the death of several passengers on the train.

On December 15, last year, the top court granted bail to one Faruk, who was serving life sentence in the case and noted that he had been in jail for 17 years.

Faruk, along with several others, was convicted for pelting stones at a coach of the train.

  • Post Gujarat HC’s ruling, AAP begins ‘show your degree’ campaign

Post Gujarat HC’s ruling, AAP begins ‘show your degree’ campaign

    [ad_1]

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has begun a ‘show your degree’ campaign and urged BJP politicians to do the same.

Delhi education minister Atishi, began the campaign a week after the Gujarat High Court fined Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal Rs 25,000 for requesting details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degrees when the information was already available.

“We’re launching a campaign today. Every day, your leaders will demonstrate their degree to you. I have a BA from Delhi University as well as two Master’s degrees from Oxford. They’re all original,” Atishi told reporters in Delhi on Sunday.

    MS Education Academy

“I want to ask all leaders, especially BJP leaders, to show their degrees,” she added, adding that AAP representatives will do so as part of the campaign.

The latest high court judgement heightened the debate surrounding the AAP’s aggressive campaign emphasising details on PM Modi’s degrees. The party has put up posters in numerous cities criticising Prime Minister Modi.

In response to Mr Kejriwal’s Right to Information (RTI) request in 2016, the then-Central Information Commission M Sridhar Acharyulu directed the Prime Minister’s Office, Gujarat University, and Delhi University to provide information on PM Modi’s graduation and postgraduate degrees.

The Gujarat University swiftly posted PM Modi’s degree on its website, but it also disputed the Information Commission’s ruling on principle.

The ruling BJP distributed copies of PM Modi’s degrees, which it said were a BA from Delhi University and an MA in Political Science from Gujarat University. Kejriwal claimed the materials included ‘glaring discrepancies.’

Tushar Mehta, the government’s lawyer before the Gujarat High Court, argued that the two institutions should not be forced to reveal the information. “In a democracy, it makes no difference whether the individual holding the post has a degree or is illiterate. Furthermore, there is no public interest in this matter. “Even his privacy is jeopardized,” the senior government lawyer stated, stressing that PM Modi’s degrees had no influence on his work.

Kejriwal’s counsel said that educational criteria were included on election candidature papers and that the question was legal. “We are requesting a degree certificate, not his mark sheet,” said AAP lawyer Percy Kavina at the Gujarat High Court.

Fake PMO official arrested in J&K to be brought to Gujarat

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: Conman Kiran Patel, who was arrested in Jammu and Kashmir last month for posing as a top official in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), is likely to be brought to Ahmedabad on Friday night, an official said.

A team of Ahmedabad Police has reached Jammu and Kashmir to take custody of Patel, according to a senior official.

Four FIRs related to cheating have been registered against Patel in different police stations in Gujarat.

    MS Education Academy

“Our team is in Jammu and Kashmir to take Kiran Patel’s custody in a cheating case registered with us. He will be brought here on Friday night,” a senior police officer said.

Kiran Patel and his wife, Malini Patel, were accused of attempting to usurp a senior citizen’s bungalow.

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch registered a case of cheating against them on March 22, six days after Malini Patel was arrested.

The complainant, Jagdish Chavda, had wanted to sell his bungalow in the Shilaj area. Patel approached Chavda claiming to be a real estate agent and persuaded him to renovate the property, claiming that it would fetch a good price.

To gain Chavda’s trust, Patel allegedly claimed to be a “Class-1 officer in the PMO” and a partner in a cafe chain.

Chavda agreed to the renovation, and Kiran along with his wife Malini, and an interior designer took Rs 35 lakh in instalments from him for the work.

When the renovation was underway, Chavda shifted to his friend’s residence.

A few days later, he learned that Patel and his wife had put up their own name-plate outside the bungalow and had conducted a house-warming ritual as if they were the owners.

When confronted, the couple left the bungalow without finishing the renovation, and Chavda moved back into the house.

In August 2022, Chavda received a court notice informing him that Kiran Patel had filed a civil suit claiming ownership of the property using photographs of his nameplate and invitation card for the house-warming ceremony, said the FIR.
