In a first, British govt issues guidance on Eid Al-Fitr 2023 marking

For the first time in its history, the British government has issued guidance for the sighting of the moon for the marking of Eid Al-Fitr, and has concluded that it cannot be before next Saturday, April 22.
The British government in its guidance states that for those observers in the Middle East, North Africa and the United Kingdom (UK), easy sightings of the crescent moon should be possible with the naked eye on Friday, April 21, Saturday, April 22, and Sunday April 23.

The actual arrival of the new moon will take place on Thursday, April 20, but viewing with telescopes will only be possible from northeastern Canada and northern parts of South America.

Optical aids may be needed to find the crescent moon from the southern Caribbean region, north-eastern parts of North America, north western parts of South America and southern Polynesia.

Naked-eye sightings under excellent conditions are possible from the northern Caribbean region, Central America and southern and western parts of North America. Easy sightings are possible from northern Polynesia including the Hawaiian Islands and some of the Aleutian Islands.

A telescopic sighting of the crescent moon with small, conventional amateur-sized telescopes will be possible from northern New Zealand and south-easternmost parts of Australia.
Optical aids may be needed to find the crescent moon from south-eastern Australia and southernmost parts of South America.
Naked-eye sightings under excellent conditions are possible from central parts of Australia and southernmost parts of South America.

The rest of the world should be able to make easy sightings of the crescent moon. Easy sightings with the naked eye should be possible from the Middle East, North Africa and the United Kingdom in particular.

Treasury guidance on electric vehicle tax credit due next week

Treasury Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy Lily Batchelder said the department will work with the private sector to ensure a “smooth transition” on which vehicles qualify for the incentives and for what amount.
“The adoption of clean vehicles is central to reducing emissions in transportation while protecting Americans from the kinds of spikes in gas prices that we saw at the outset of Putin’s brutal invasion of Ukraine,” Batchelder said. “However, we can’t trade dependence on foreign oil for dependence on foreign batteries and our forthcoming guidance will strengthen our supply chain.”
The Treasury Department released a white paper late last year signaling the U.S. could use expanded definitions for free trade agreements for imports of critical minerals during the tax credit rulemaking process.
Manchin has repeatedly expressed outrage over the delay in guidelines for the law’s EV tax credits and has accused the administration of trying to undermine congressional intent.
On Wednesday, Batchelder said China’s control over critical minerals processing globally underscores the need to strengthen U.S. supply chains “along with like-minded partners.” She pointed to recent, initial talks between President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Treasury’s actions “will advance economic security and stability by ensuring that the United States and allies and partners are not reliant on China for critical minerals in the decades to come,” she added.
The department did not provide any specific details on the proposed rule for EVs beyond that it will be released next week.
The Inflation Reduction Act included provisions aimed at lowering the cost for electric vehicles, while also increasing domestic manufacturing across clean energy technologies and components. Since the law’s enactment, companies have announced tens of billions of dollars in EV and battery manufacturing facilities.

‘Guidance for us’: UP DyCM Maurya on RSS chief’s remark on caste system

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, a prominent OBC face of the BJP in the state, on Monday said RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s comment on the caste system in Hindu society is a “guidance for us”.
Addressing an event in Mumbai on Sunday, Bhagwat has said everyone is equal in the eyes of God and no caste or sect exists before him.
All these things were created by priests which is wrong, he had said.
“I am a Swayamsevak (volunteer) of the RSS and when our revered Sarsanghchalak (RSS chief) says something, we consider it a ‘margdarshan’ (guidance) for us,” Maurya told PTI in the Parliament House Complex when asked about Bhagwat’s remarks.
He, however, refused to make any further comment. “It will be inappropriate for me to make any comment on the remarks of the revered Sarsanghchalak.”
Opposition leaders, however, targeted the RSS and the ruling BJP, saying Bhagwat’s statement should reflect in the action and work culture of his outfit and that of BJP governments.
“Mohan Bhagwat’s statement is just a statement. One can relish it when it reflects in your actions and work culture. It’s not seen in your work culture. (Centre is) sitting on the caste census,” RJD’s Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha told PTI when asked for a reaction to the RSS chief’s comment.
He asked Bhagwat to enforce a culture that could end “caste atrocities and inequality” in the country.

“In the sea of inequality, you have made five islands of prosperity. One of the islands is Hindenburg, which is exposing the government a bit. End that,” the RJD leader said, apparently demanding that the RSS chief ensure that action is taken against allegations of financial fraud against the Adani Group.
The business giant has rejected all allegations made by the US-based short seller.
Reacting to Bhagwat’s remark, Congress MP Digvijay Singh sought to know from the RSS chief which of the Hindu scriptures are “lying” about the existence of cast system.
“He has said the scriptures are lying. We want to ask Mohan Bhagwat which of the scriptures are lying,” the Congress leader told PTI when asked for his reaction on the RSS chief’s remark.
BJP MP from Rajasthan’s Alwar Balak Nath termed Bhagwat’s remark “truth” and alleged it is the Congress which divides people on the lines of caste for political gains.
“He (Bhagwat) has talked about Sanatan. There is no mention of any caste system in Sanatan. People brought in the caste system based on their work,” he told PTI when asked for his comment.
Bhagwat’s reflections on Sanatan dharma and the caste system is “absolutely correct”, he said.
“It’s the Congress which has been pitting people against each other on the lines of castes, creating division in the society, for power politics, taking cue from the Mughals and the British. The BJP has united India,” he added.
