Lulu group chairman Yusuffali dismisses reports of ED summons, calls them fake

    [ad_1]

Dubai: Lulu Group Chairman Yusuffali M A on Tuesday dismissed reports of being summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the LIFE Mission case and termed them as fake.

He stated that the group would not give in to any “misinformation campaign” and may take legal action against those who spread such rumors against the group and himself.

His name came to the fore after the chat messages between Swapna Suresh and M.Sivasankar, the now jailed former principal secretary to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, got out.

Lulu Group Chairman Yusuffali says his firm is a structural company

On Wednesday, he said that his firm is a structural company having thousands of employees.

In a press meeting held in Dubai, Yusuffali said, “Just ask the people who report that I got the summons and clear it. Mine is a structural company employing 65000 people. 310 crore rupees are paid as monthly salary outside India, and 25 crore rupees inside India. We have no problem with anyone saying anything. I have been in the Gulf for 50 years.”

“We have to live under the rule of law. Will proceed accordingly. Yusuff Ali is not one to run away in fear when there are problems. I will not be afraid even if some social media people accuse me day and night. I will not back down from the cause of the poor and from my business. Lulu’s legal department will look into it if legal action is required,” Yusuffali said while speaking to the media in Dubai.

    Life Mission

The bribery case pertains to Vijayan’s pet project — Life Mission flat project for the weaker sections of the society.

The Wadakkanchery project in Trissur district is mired in controversy, and the work has come to a standstill after the bribery case surfaced.

The funds for the project came from a UAE-based charity organisation — Red Crescent — and Swapna had alleged that a huge commission money had changed hands in the project. She made the allegations after the builder of the project — Santhosh Eapen — was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate.

Lulu Group Chairman Yusuffali’s name figured after it surfaced that he was also a part of the discussion about the project.

  • Recruitment scam: WBSSC publishes list of 3,478 Group C staff with manipulated marks

Recruitment scam: WBSSC publishes list of 3,478 Group C staff with manipulated marks

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) on Monday published on its website a list of 3,478 candidates who reportedly have qualified for appointment as non-teaching staff in different state-run schools through manipulation of marks.

The list, uploaded on the commission’s website as per the order of Calcutta High Court’s Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, has clearly shown how marks as low as “0” to “1” in the optical mark recognition (OMR) sheets have increased to as high as “54” to 57″ in the server.

The discrepancies in the marks in the OMR sheets and those in the commission’s server was brought to limelight by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigating the multi-crore teachers and non-teaching staff recruitment scam. Now, by officially uploading that disparity on this website late Monday afternoon, the WBSSC authorities too have endorsed the CBI’s findings in the matter.

The list published on the website of the commission on Monday has three columns. The first and second columns carry the names and roll numbers of the candidates concerned. The third column mentioned the published marks as shown in the commission’s website and the fourth column showed the actual marks scored in the OMR sheet.

Similar discrepancies in marks in the OMR sheets and on the commission’s server was also noted by the Calcutta High Court last year in case of recruitment of secondary teachers.

Till the time the report was filed, not a single Trinamool Congress leader was willing to come forward with any comment on the matter. However, the opposition leaders in the state lambasted the state government and the ruling party in the matter.

“Previously it was thought that 80 per cent of the recruitments were illegal and at least in the case of 20 per cent the eligible candidates secured jobs. But now it seems that 100 per cent of the recruitment is illegal,” said CPI-M Central Committee member Sujan Chakraborty.

Senior state BJP leader Rahul Sinha said that this is an organised crime and it is not possible that it was conducted without the knowledge of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Supplementary charge sheet filed against Oreva Group MD in Morbi bridge collapse case

    [ad_1]

Morbi: A supplementary charge sheet has been filed in a court here against Oreva Group MD Jaysukh Patel in the case related to the last year’s Morbi suspension bridge collapse which claimed 135 lives.

Police filed the supplementary charge sheet in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate M J Khan on Thursday, Patel’s lawyer Haresh Mehta said.

Following which, Patel’s case was committed (transferred) to the sessions court on Friday for trial against him and nine other accused, he added.

“The matter will be now heard in the court of principal district and sessions judge P C Joshi from March 17,” advocate Mehta said.

A special investigation team had on January 27 filed a charge sheet against the nine accused arrested earlier in the case. Patel was then shown as a fugitive. He later surrendered before a court and was arrested by the police on January 31.

He and others were booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 336 (act which endangers human life), 337 (causing hurt to any person by doing any rash or negligent act) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by doing rash or negligent act).

Patel’s plea for interim bail was recently rejected by a court.

The British-era suspension bridge on the Machchhu river in Morbi town collapsed on October 30, 2022, killing 135 persons and injuring 56 others.

Oreva group had taken up the responsibility of operating and maintaining the bridge.

WBSSC scam: Calcutta HC orders termination of 842 Group C staff

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered termination of services of 842 non-teaching staff in the Group C category who were allegedly provided appointments illegally against the monetary considerations in different state-run schools in West Bengal.

The single-judge bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of Calcutta High Court also directed the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) and the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) to issue separate notifications on the cancellation of recommendation letter and termination of services on this count by 12 p.m. on Saturday.

Justice Gangopadhyay also directed the commission and the board to ensure that no salaries are credited to Group C staff henceforth.

Justice Gangopadhyay’s order on Friday comes following a submission by the WBSSC in court that of these 842 Group C staff, 785 secured appointments through tampering with the optical mark recognition sheets, while the remaining 57 got appointments without valid recommendations from the commission.

While passing the order, Justice Gangopadhyay observed that neither the commission nor the state education department could avoid taking the responsibility for such massive recruitment corruption.

“The fruits of this corruption have gone in favour of some influential people in the commission and the state education department,” he observed.

He also directed the commission to start the process of filling up the vacant posts resulting from the termination from the waiting list within the next 10 days.

Farmers’ protest foiled handover of India’s foodgrain logistics to Adani Group: Cong

    [ad_1]

New Delhi; Congress on Thursday alleged that farm laws, which were withdrawn by the Centre in 2021, were brought in to give benefits to the Adani group.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary, who has started a series of questions, said “It’s related to the hard work the government has put into handing over India’s foodgrain logistics to the Adani Group, a conspiracy that it seems was only temporarily foiled by the farmer agitation of 2020-21 that forced you to withdraw the black farm laws.”

He said, “one of the biggest beneficiaries of the farm laws would have been Adani Agri Logistics which has become the major beneficiary of the Food Corporation of India’s silo contracts, the most recent award being one to set up 3.5 lakh metric tonnes of storage in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.”

He alleged that Adani Farm-Pik was allowed to build a near-monopoly on apple procurement in Himachal Pradesh.

“Is India’s public sector, painstakingly built over the past 70 years, now reduced to being a vehicle for the enrichment of your corporate friends,” he asked.

He said the Supreme Court observed that the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution had supported the Central warehousing corporation stand while the Ministry of Commerce and Industry had aided Adani’s bid to take control of two major CWC warehouses near Mundra port by not supporting the denotification of the warehouses as part of the Adani SEZ.

“The entire country knows that the motivation behind your ill-conceived farm laws was to hand over India’s agricultural logistics to a few of your close corporate cronies,” Ramesh added.

  • Morbi bridge collapse: Oreva Group MD denied interim bail

Morbi bridge collapse: Oreva Group MD denied interim bail

    [ad_1]

Morbi: A court on Tuesday rejected jailed Oreva Group managing director Jaysukh Patel’s plea for interim bail, which he had sought to complete the formalities to pay compensation to the victims of last year’s collapse of a suspension bridge in Gujarat’s Morbi town, in which 135 people were killed.

The court of principal district and sessions judge P C Joshi here dismissed Patel’s interim bail plea, which was opposed by both the state government and family members of the victims.

The Ahmedabad-headquartered Oreva Group was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the ill-fated British-era bridge on the Machchhu river, which collapsed on October 30 last year, killing 135 persons and injuring 56 others.

Patel, one of the 10 accused arrested in the case, had filed a plea seeking temporary release from jail for 15 to 20 days to complete the formalities required to pay compensation to the families of the deceased and those injured in the crash as per the Gujarat High Court’s February 22 order.

The high court had directed the company to pay Rs 10 lakh as interim compensation to the kin of each deceased and Rs 2 lakh to each injured within four weeks.

During arguments in the sessions court last week, the state government had opposed Patel’s plea and said the company itself came forward with the offer to pay compensation to the victims, and it should be assumed it was ready with the financial arrangement required for the payment.

The government also submitted that the high court’s direction on compensation was for the Oreva Group and not its promoters, and the company has continued to operate even when Patel was jailed.

The lawyer for the families of the victims stated that if released on bail, the businessman may try to influence witnesses of the case.

The Oreva Group had made an offer before the high court to pay an ‘interim’ compensation totaling Rs 5 crore to the kin of those who lost their lives and those injured in the collapse.

The 10 accused arrested in the case are currently lodged in Morbi sub- jail under judicial custody.

Patel, who was shown as an accused in a chargesheet filed by the police, had been absconding for three months and surrendered before a court on January 31.

  • Cong alleges govt granted ‘monopolies’ to Adani Group, allowed it to ‘fleece’ consumers

Cong alleges govt granted ‘monopolies’ to Adani Group, allowed it to ‘fleece’ consumers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday alleged that the government has granted “monopolies” to the Adani Group, allowing it to “fleece” consumers who need to use essential infrastructure services such as airports and electricity.

The opposition party also said that persistent demand for a JPC on the Adani issue was not to embarrass Prime Minister Narendra Modi but to unravel its full dimensions.

Posing a set of three questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the party’s “Hum Adani ke Hain Kaun” series, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the focus of the posers was on how the “monopolies granted” to the Adani Group have allowed it to “fleece” consumers who need to use essential infrastructure services like airports and electricity.

The Congress is persisting with its attack on the government weeks after Adani Group stocks took a beating on the bourses after US-based short seller Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation.

The Gautam Adani-led group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

In his statement addressed to the prime minister, Ramesh claimed that the Adani-operated Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow, India’s 11th busiest airport, has proposed an “exorbitant increase” in the user development fee (UDF) paid by passengers.

“If approved by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA), user fees will rise from Rs 192 to Rs 1,025 for domestic passengers and Rs 561 to Rs 2,756 for international passengers by the fiscal year 2025-26,” the Congress general secretary claimed.

AERA has already approved a six-fold fee increase for domestic passengers and a 12-fold fee increase for international passengers flying out of the Adani-operated Ahmedabad airport by 2025-26, he said.

“And AERA outdid itself in the case of the Adani-operated Mangaluru airport by not only hiking user fees for departing passengers but also imposing them on arriving passengers,” Ramesh claimed.

Is this not the “inevitable outcome of the PM’s decision to grant an airports monopoly to his friend Gautam Adani by handing him six out of six airports over the objections of the NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Finance”, the Congress leader asked.

“Will customers have to pay out of their pockets for the electoral bonds that your cronies are transferring to BJP coffers?” Ramesh said.

He also claimed that in 2008, Adani Power signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Haryana’s state-owned power distribution companies to supply 1,424 megawatts (MW) of electricity for 25 years at a levelised tariff of Rs 2.94 per unit.

But it began to default on its power supply obligations from December 2020, forcing Haryana to buy spot electricity at Rs 11.55 per unit, he claimed.

“Far from recovering what it was due, the Manohar Lal Khattar government decided to approve a supplementary PPA on June 27, 2022 through which it will procure a reduced 1,200 MW from Adani at Rs 3.54 per unit and will source the remaining 224 MW at a far higher price from Adani,” he alleged.

“Did you pressure CM Khattar to bail out your cronies yet again? How many thousands of crores of rupees will be fleeced from Haryana consumers by Adani to pay for the BJP’s electoral bonds?” Ramesh said.

He also claimed that on March 1, 2023, Adani Power made a disclosure to the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange that it had signed supplementary PPAs with Haryana’s two power distribution companies.

However, no such PPA had been signed at that time, he alleged.

Was this a crude attempt to shore up flagging Adani share prices, Ramesh asked.

“Will this be yet another case of SEBI turning a blind eye to blatant violations and deceptions by your favourite business group?” he said.

Responding to a media report which quoted senior lawyer Harish Salve as saying that the demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe was aimed at only embarrassing the Centre, Ramesh tweeted, “My friend Harish Salve with whom I worked closely as environment minister is completely wrong.

“The persistent demand for a JPC on the Adani scam is not to embarrass the PM but to unravel its full dimensions, which no technocratic committee can or will be willing to do.”
