Congress accuses Adani Group of having links with Chinese firm

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday accused the Adani Group of having business links with a Chinese company in all its infrastructure projects in roads, railways, ports and airport sectors, saying it posed a threat to national security.

The remarks prompted Law Minister Kiren Rijiju to hit back at the opposition party.

Responding to a tweet by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, Rijiju said, “Do not comment on sensitive matters. The Congress has no moral right to speak about Arunachal Pradesh.”

    MS Education Academy

Ramesh had alleged that business tycoon Gautam Adani has business links with Chinese citizens. He wondered whether it was compromising national security.

The law minister also shared a video in which the then defence minister A K Antony is purportedly telling Lok Sabha that for long India had a policy not to develop borders as an undeveloped border was safer than a developed border.

“First respond to this reality,” Rijiju, who represents Arunachal Pradesh in the Lok Sabha, said.

Addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the company, fully owned by a Chinese national — Chang Chian Ting — was a subcontractor for the Adani Group and is a partner of Adani’s brother.

The Adani Group has not made any comments on the charges made by the Congress yet.

The firm had earlier denied indulging in wrongdoing.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also cited a media report and said on Twitter, “PMC Projects – Pradhan Mantri Chinese’ Projects?”

“Why are India’s critical ports, airstrips, railway tracks and electricity lines being built and controlled by a Chinese company?” he asked.

Shrinate said China made several transgressions along the border on the Indian side and killed 20 of our soldiers.

It changed names of places in Arunachal Pradesh thrice, but the links that a Chinese-owned company has with the Adani Group shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special relationship with China. “This is totally anti-national,” she said.

“If this is not a threat to national security, then what is?” she added.

The Congress spokesperson further alleged that Modi gave a clean chit to China because of “this relationship” and that is why, he has not broken his silence yet on either China or the Adani issue.

“The veil now stands lifted,” she said, and asked, “When will the government hold a probe into the Chinese company?”

Shrinate also asked the government to find the source of Rs 20,000 crore alleged to have been found deposited in “shell companies” of the Adani Group.

AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter, “Everyday the reason for the PM’s eloquent silence on Chinese is becoming evident. This is largely because of Adani’s intimate links to China. We had mentioned this first on March 3 in the ‘Hum Adanike Hain Kaun’ series and today there are further revelations.”

Congress leader Amitabh Dubey also said the Congress has asked several questions on China and the Adani issue, but the government is yet to break its silence.

“Now this is an issue of national security and they will have to reply,” he said.

Kerala stops religious discourse in jails, Christian group upset

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: An order by the Kerala Jails Department stopping all religious discourses in the jails for the benefit of the prisoners has drawn the ire of a Christian group.

The order, issued a few days back, said there will be no more permission granted to conduct religious discourses which saw priests from all the religions arriving in the jails to interact with the prisoners.

George Sebastian, an office bearer of the Assembly of Christian Trust Services (ACTS), a body of all Christian churches and prayer groups, deplored that such an order has come when the Passion Week (the Aweek leading to Easter Sunday is presently on.

    MS Education Academy

“The order bans all such interactions with the prisoners and no religious leaders will now be allowed entry to the jails. What has pained us is this has happened during the Passion Week, a holy time for all Christians. The leaders of ACTS will soon be meeting with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to see that this practise should not be discontinued as this interaction definitely is a way for the prisoners’ redemption,” he said.

Incidentally, this practice of leaders from various religions interacting with the prisoners for a fixed time a few days every month was there for long and now the top officials of the Kerala Police are tight-lipped on why it has been stopped. The buzz is that motivational speakers might be allowed.

Two Adani group companies face ‘contagion risks’: Fitch report

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Global ratings agency Fitch has said that two companies within the Adani Group – Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd. and Adani Transmission Ltd. – face increased “contagion risks” due to weak governance within the conglomerate.

The report, released on Tuesday in Singapore, suggests that until these concerns are addressed, the ratings for Adani Transmission and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone will remain capped at their current level of “BBB-/Stable”.

Fitch also noted that as of the end of December 2022, the debt of Adani’s rated Indian entities was largely secured and held offshore, with U.S. dollar bonds maturing from mid-2024. Therefore, there are no immediate concerns about repayment.

Adani debunks reports on repayment of loans against shares

Meanwhile, the Adani Group has strongly refuted news reports which make the baseless and deliberately mischievous claim that the Group has not completed the repayment of USD 2.15 billion in share-backed debt.

Adani has completed full prepayment of margin linked share backed financing aggregating to USD 2.15 billion and all corresponding shares pledged for those facilities have been released.

Adani said all share backed facilities availed by the promoters have been paid off.

After the statement, stocks of Adani Group companies rebounded.

Terror group SFJ threatens Uttarakhand CM ahead of G20 meet in Ramnagar

    [ad_1]

Dehradun: Ahead of the three-day G20 meeting in Ramnagar, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has received pre-recorded threat calls from Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, chief of the banned organisation Sikhs for Justice (SFJ).

The pre-recorded audio was also sent to mediapersons and government officials on Sunday.

In the message, allegedly sent by spoofed numbers, the SFJ president threatened to raise Khalistani flags during the G20 meeting claiming that Ramnagar is a part of Khalistan and not India.

Pannu also warned Dhami against taking action against people of his organisation in the state.

“If any case is filed against the people of my organisation in Uttarakhand, then the Chief Minister will be responsible for it,” the pre-recorded call said.

Earlier this month, the SFJ chief also made similar calls regarding the G20 conference held in Amritsar on March 15.

Director General of Police (DGP) Uttarakhand Ashok Kumar said that he has issued instructions to get it probed by the state Special Task Force (STF) immediately and the STF has started tracing all these numbers.

This is not the first time that such messages of Pannu have gone viral. In the past also people have been getting calls like this.

According to police officials, the SFJ has no base in Uttarakhand.

Pannu lives in America and practices law in New York. He is considered to be the face of Sikhs for Justice.

Pannu has been involved in a number of terrorist activities. He tried to organise “Referendum 2020” two years ago, in which he appealed to Sikhs around the world to vote in support of Khalistan and he has been provoking the youth to support Khalistan.

Pannu was declared a terrorist under the UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) in July 2020.

  • Discussion on G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group work plan held in Udaipur

Discussion on G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group work plan held in Udaipur

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Detailed discussion on the G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group (SFWG) work plan in 2023 was held in a three-day meeting of the group under the G20 India presidency in Udaipur.

    The meeting concluded on Thursday.

“Discussion on SFWD work plan comprising three identified priority areas of mechanisms for mobilisation of timely and adequate resources for climate finance; enabling finance for the Sustainable Development Goals; and capacity building of the ecosystem for financing toward sustainable development were held in the meeting,” according to a release.

The meeting held on March 21-23 was attended by 93 delegates from G20 member countries, 10 invitee countries and 18 international organisations, including Asian Development Bank and United Nations Development Programme, among others.

“Keeping up with a collaborative spirit and arriving at a consensus, members agreed upon the way forward for important deliverables for the year that include a set of options for mobilising financial resources for climate action, developing an analytical framework for SDG-aligned finance and the G20 Sustainable Finance Technical Assistance Action Plan (TAAP),” the release said.

During the plenary sessions, members’ discussions and interventions were held on the three priority areas of the SFWG.

On the priority of mobilising finance for climate action, the G20 members agreed that MDBs play an important role in catalysing private finance and that they must strengthen this role.

“The catalytic role of the public sector was also stressed. The importance of creating an enabling environment in scaling up finance for climate action was underscored,” the release said.

On financing the SDGs, the members deliberated upon developing an analytical framework for SDG-aligned finance with discussions on best policies and approaches for scaling up wider adoption of social impact investment instruments and necessary frameworks to incorporate nature-related risks and opportunities into investment decisions of financial institutions and companies.

SFWG is working to develop a G20 Technical Assistance Action Plan that would include the identification and analysis of existing capacity-building activities and identifying the existing sustainable finance skill gaps.

“There were discussions on how various stakeholders can work together to develop capacity-building programmes that effectively address the unique needs of different groups while fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing in sustainable finance,” the release noted.

The delegates also participated in local sightseeing, such as a visit to the City Palace to witness the magnificent light and sound show, boat rides on the banks of lake Pichola along with several cultural programmes displaying the cultural heritage of Rajasthan.

  • WhatsApp’s new update gives admins more control over who can join group

WhatsApp’s new update gives admins more control over who can join group

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced two new updates for “groups” on WhatsApp — new controls for admins, and easily see groups in common.

The new features which will start rolling out globally over the coming weeks, come just a few months after WhatsApp launched Communities, a feature that offers larger, more structured discussion groups.

“Last year, we rolled out Communities to help people get the most out of their groups on WhatsApp. Since launching, we’ve wanted to build even more tools for admins and users alike. Today we’re excited to roll out a few new changes we’ve made to make groups more manageable for admins and easier to navigate for everyone,” the company said.

It has built a tool that gives admins the ability to decide who is able to join a group, giving admins more control over their group privacy.

“When an admin chooses to share their group’s invite link or make their group joinable in a community, they now have more control over who can join,” the company said.

With the growth of Communities and their larger groups, the tech giant said it wants to make it easy to know which groups you have in common with someone.

“Whether you’re trying to remember the name of a group you know you share with someone or you want to see the groups you’re both in, you can now easily search a contact’s name to see your groups in common.”

  • Adani group says Vinod Adani is part of promoter group

Adani group says Vinod Adani is part of promoter group

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Vinod Adani, the little known elder brother of Adani group founder Gautam Adani, is part of the promoter group, the conglomerate has said after questions were raised about his status following short seller Hindenburg Research naming him prominently in its scathing report on the Adani group.

“We would like to submit that Gautam Adani and Rajesh Adani are individual promoters of various listed entities within the Adani group and Vinod Adani is an immediate relative of the individual promoters,” the group’s flagship Adani Enterprises said in a stock exchange filing on Thursday.

Accordingly, as per the applicable Indian regulations, “Vinod Adani is part of the ‘promoter group’ of various listed entities within the Adani group.”

In response to Hindenburg questioning the role of Vinod Adani, 74, in the Adani group where it alleged “brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud” and use of offshore shell companies to inflate stock prices, the apples-to-airport conglomerate had in January said that “Vinod Adani does not hold any managerial position in Adani listed entities or their subsidiaries and has no role in their day to day affairs.”

“We reiterate that any transactions by the Adani portfolio companies with any related party have been duly identified and disclosed as related party transactions in compliance with Indian laws and standard and have been carried out on arm’s length terms,” it had said.

Hindenburg Research had alleged that Vinod Adani was responsible for creating and managing a vast network of offshore shell entities meant for stock parking, market manipulation and laundering money, to help the conglomerate’s companies maintain their appearance of financial health.

The group has denied all Hindenburg allegations, calling them “malicious”, “baseless” and a “calculated attack on India”.

Vinod Adani is widely reported to be working out of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Regulatory filings show he is a Cypriot national.

When Adani group bought Swiss giant Holcim AG’s stake in Ambuja Cements and ACC, the deal was completed via a Mauritius-based entity called Endeavour Trade and Investment.

In the filing, Adani group said the fact that Vinod Adani was part of the promoter group had been submitted to Indian regulatory authorities from time to time in various disclosures.

“Further, the fact that Endeavour Trade and Investment Limited (an entity controlled by Vinod Adani), the acquirer of ACC Limited and Ambuja Cements Limited, belongs to the Adani group has been disclosed in the public offer document,” it added.
